I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours.
The Sea Stone Sisters is the first book in a new series by debut author Eleanor Buchanan perfect for fans of Lucinda Riley like myself.
This debut was absolutely beautiful from start to finish, whisking me away from Scotland to Ceylon, Australia and London across dual time lines that steal your breath away with how captivating they are.
The story starts with how a curse was made on anyone who takes down the four Sisters of Skara stones put in place to guide a heartbroken fathers four abducted daughters home to their island centuries ago. It then follows a family in 1931 with four daughters in Skara who's wealth is taken from them after their father takes down the stones within his renovating their home and unleashes the curse upon his family. The book then goes back and fourth between 1931 and the present day following a young woman (Roz) grieving the death of her mother with a unexpected find and a strange pull towards an old paining of four stones in an art gallery window in London.
This book is absolutely stunning and I urge everyone to pick it up and be swept away on a journey that captivated the heart and soul.

Take your time to note characters and read slowly. This is an alluring setting and an intriguing plot. There's lots for historical fiction lovers to appreciate. It’s the first of a new series for this author.

Primer libro de una serie, Las hijas de Skara”, en este caso vamos a seguir a dos mujeres en dos lineas temporales, Iris, la hija mayor de la familia durante 1931, y Roz, que en el presente se muda de Australia a Londres. Esa doble línea para mi es el punto fuerte de la historia, la autora entrelaza el pasado y el presente resulta muy natural e interesante.
Tanto Iris como Roz, son dos personajes que me han gustado, mujeres fuertes y testarudas, pero si hay que destacar algo, es la ambientación, ya que vamos a recorrer multitud de lugares que están descritos de tal forma que sientes que estas allí, y cada sitio aporta algo a la historia.
Un libro que deja claro que es el comienzo de una saga, ya que sin desvelar mucho la autora deja sutiles pistas de las vidas de las otras hermanas para despertar la curiosidad del lector.
Es verdad que al final todas las piezas ( las mas importantes) encajan pero a la vez quedan bastantes preguntas sin respuesta, y aunque está muy bien escrito, la mezcla entre romance y “fantasía” no ha llegado a convencerme.
La recomiendo si te gustan las historias familiares, con descripciones y romance.

Als iemand mij had verteld dat ik zo snel na het starten van @glutenvrij.leesplezier al een ARC zou krijgen om te recenseren, had ik hem of haar niet geloofd. Maar, niets bleek minder waar. Uitgeverij Xander gaf mij de kans om Opaal van Eleanor Buchanan te lezen voordat het uitkwam. Wauw, wat was ik daar blij mee. Toen het boek werd aangekondigd heb ik het meteen op mijn TBR geplaatst. Waarom? Heb je de voorkant al gezien? Die trok mij dus meteen. Het verhaal speelt zich af in 1931, de tijd van mijn opa's en oma's. Een tijd waarover ik graag lees en waarover ik hen ook graag hoor(de) vertellen. En dan gecombineerd met het heden. Wat een fijne combinatie vind ik dat altijd. En toen las ik Australië, het land waar ik zo graag heen wil op vakantie. Het geld dat ik bespaard heb met dit exemplaar gaat dan ook in het Australië-spaarpotje.
Wie mijn unboxing heeft gezien kon de 😍 in mijn stem horen. Want zeg nou zelf: hoe mooi is de kaft van dit boek! Het is meteen duidelijk dat de uitgever veel verwacht van dit debuut en dat er gekozen is voor een combinatie van een dikkere kaft, mooie versiering en dan ook nog subtiele gouden letters. Gouden letters kunnen soms wat 'goedkoop' overkomen vind ik, maar dat is hier totaal niet aan de orde. Het ontwerp vind ik juist erg stijlvol.
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit drie hoofdpersonen en dit vind ik vernieuwend. Daardoor duurde het wel even voor ik in het verhaal zat. Maar toen ik er eenmaal in zat, zat ik er ook goed in. De brieven zijn vrij fragmentarisch opgeschreven en worden onderbroken door gedachten. Dit is anders dan ik gewend ben, maar maakt het juist speels. Ingewikkelde familiebanden liepen als rode draad door het boek heen en daar kan ik altijd erg van genieten. Zo ook in dit boek.
Een mooie wijze les die ik uit het verhaal heb gehaald: je gaat mensen pas echt waarderen als je beseft dat ze je afgenomen kunnen worden. Dit komt op meerdere plekken terug in het boek. Een mooie zin die mij bij is gebleven na het lezen: "Ze vertelde dat ze als kind bang was geweest dat ze de pijn om dat verlies niet te boven zou komen, en dat ze doodsbang was geweest om opnieuw van iemand te houden en diegene dan weer kwijt te raken."
Ben ik dan alleen maar positief? Nou, ik heb wel een verbeterpuntje voor de volgende druk en ook voor de volgende delen. De wereldkaart en de stamboom zou ik héél graag in het Nederlands zien. Ik weet niet of het een gevalletje van vergeten is, maar ik kan me echt niet bedenken waarom in een Nederlandstalig boek deze twee in het Engels zijn afgedrukt.
Iets dat ik niet zo realistisch vind is hoe lang intercontinentale post erover deed in die tijd. In het verhaal lijkt dat allemaal vrij snel te gaan, maar van mijn oma weet ik dat dat niet zo was. Toen zij als kind in Indonesië woonde, duurde het echt heel lang voor de post over en weer ging naar Nederland. Ik hoop dan ook dat in de volgende delen dit net even wat realistischer in het boek zal staan.
Ik vond het heel interessant om over het klimaat op Sri Lanka te leren. De grote verschillen tussen het oosten en westen van het eiland had ik niet verwacht, maar werden mooi in het verhaal beschreven. Sowieso vond ik de beschrijving van het leven in de tropen goed gelukt. Het komt ook goed overeen met hoe mijn oma en tante er altijd over hebben verteld.
Het boek wordt in de markt gezet als 'voor de lezers van Lucinda Riley en Corina Bomann'. Dat zorgt voor hoge verwachtingen, maar wat mij betreft maakt Eleanor Buchanan deze allemaal waar. Ook voelde ik de 'magie' uit de serie De bloementuin van Harper House van Nora Roberts. Dus ben je fan van Nora Roberts, ook dan zou ik Opaal van Eleanor Buchanan aanraden.
Het grote nadeel aan een boek vooruit lezen is wel dat het daardoor nóg langer duurt voordat het vervolg op de markt komt. Dus Xander: ik bied me bij deze graag aan om ook de volgende delen voor jullie te recenseren. Ik vind het al lastig genoeg om zo lang te wachten op het vervolg! Ik kan echt niet wachten om te ontdekken hoe het verdergaat met Rose, Lily en Daisy. In dit boek kregen we al een stiekem vooruitkijkje over waar hun verhalen zich af zouden kunnen gaan spelen.

3.5 Stars Not Rounded Up!
When I chose to read this I had no idea that this was the first novel in a brand new series, and this being the first one it is a great place to start. I really don't remember when I decided to commit it to be read but do know I have mixed feelings about the type of writing not going to be for everyone. It is in one way that I can summarize it not what I usually read since it is not above average writing for sure. I think that it was the intriguing synopsis about the story itself that caught my attention. In other words it is not the same work when it comes to the writing of being up to feeling like it requires a lot of effort to reading this since I could recognize the writing as being from a brand new author who I don't mean to sound uncharitable but it is glaringly obvious that it is not the work that I can definitely see that it felt like it measures up to anything I would say that I have encountered much worse in terms of this being somethings that made it a novel that I found lighter, and I did think it reminded me of a legend, with great storytelling, and lovable characters that I enjoyed. I might be having read this at a different time not as picky, which I am trying to understand why with so many positive things, but it definitely could have used more editing since it was an easy read that felt heartwarming with the love of the four sisters that I found quite moving. The positive attributes are that it appeals to me with how atmospheric that relies on setting that is vibrant to me, but it is the imagery of how easy to visualize the different countries that this novel felt descriptive enough that is not likely to be enough to satisfy myself, or most readers which I tend to be more on the generous side when it comes to how I rate a novel. I might be that if not reading such well written work so early this year, except one that was much less enjoyable, that I struggled with which is not the case here. That was what is evident that is the most standout attribute that I can honestly say this offers that highlights this which captured my assessment overall that was done that I can see that I felt was almost excessive that I also felt this might be harsh, which is not my intention. This has already been published so I have mentioned that my getting what is unusual for me to submit a review after the Publication Date, is not my usual standard in fact, it is very rare or only if I am receiving the copy, after it has already published that I have been this behind. Also, in my 15 years of experience I have always read, provided my feedback months ahead in advance of the Publication Date. I give my honest opinion that is submitted well in advance of the Publication Date unless I choose to read something that I am granted the digital title of receiving it after it already published which my recollection happened five times since I have had a 100% feedback ratio that I have been conscientious about always preferring as I have never not submitted a review that I have approximately 1700 ARCS that I have estimating that each one have been given a comprehensive much longer than necessary analysis, but I take pride in submitting a review that meets my high standards that I am happy with. I have had a few like this one which this one which in all honesty this was enjoyable, but I could say is an not one that I would recommend because the writing was below average, and very repetitive that I found it engaging but I saw it as it as one that lacked the technical features that I say this with hoping that it finds the right audience with my very best wishes to the author who I hope this is taken as positive feedback meant to be helpful, as I know how much heart, and love this was by no means a bad book, and I might read the next one in the series as this shows a wonderful fertile imagination with a list of many things that I loved. The idea of the curse, the premise of this with the legend of the Stones bringing misfortune when knocked flat, the atmospheric descriptions of each Country, and that I could go so far as to say that I found how vibrant the imagery was the strongest part of the novel. I do admire how pleasant it felt to read the beauty of certain Countries. I felt this might be one that for a comfort read that I might decide to read the next one since as I already said above that I found this to be a lighter reading experience, and I am not staying this was a bad book. My review won't likely affect the outcome since I had an unplanned but emergency surgery which was the reason that I am so behind since it was a longer hospitalization that I had no symptoms other than I was so sick one day that it kept up for twenty four hours that I went to the ER, and ended up after tests that I was admitted to that same hospital that I am including as to be not required, but in hopes that I share so that my late submission was not because of my not finding the writing as one I can recommend. I do think this could have been in desperate need of Editing, and it could have been more polished with less spelling errors, and the frequent typos that I have noticed that find myself disappointed that the novel is already Published without these errors being corrected. I noticed that my opinion is an Outlier when I posted it. I don't usually read other reviews since I want mine to be only my honest thoughts.
I would urge readers to check out other reviews besides mine, since I didn't see anything below four Stars, which I did find it has potential, and I thought it was moving. It could be that I had just read two flawlessly written debuts that my expectations were too high with this novel because I liked this. I did find it by no means a bad book. I found it an easy read that I wrote above what worked, so I still felt it lacked the caliber of polish, that I am now doubting myself, but it just felt not as what I can call well written, even though it was great storytelling.

Jeśli tak jak ja pokochałyście serię „Siedem sióstr” Lucindy Riley czy „Utracone córki” Sorayi Lane, to zakochacie się również w „Siostrach mórz” Eleanor Buchanan. To porywająca saga o czterech rozdzielonych siostrach i ich potomkiniach, które, rozsiane po najdalszych zakątkach świata, próbują rozwikłać tajemnicę starożytnej klątwy szkockich głazów, by odkryć swoje korzenie i wreszcie powrócić do domu na klifie.
25 marca miał premierę pierwszy tom tej serii, „Iris”, w którym przepadłam od pierwszych stron! Ta rozgrywająca się w dwóch liniach czasowych opowieść kieruje nas ku najstarszej z sióstr Blackmore, która w latach trzydziestych ubiegłego wieku porywa się na desperacką podróż na Cejlon w poszukiwaniu wuja, oraz współcześnie ku Roz, uciekającej z Australii do Anglii przed brutalnym ojczymem.
Przyznam, że z większą fascynacją śledziłam losy Iris, również przez wzgląd na barwnie ukazane ówczesne realia i odmienność krain oraz klimatów, do których trafia. Jej przepiękna, ale i pełna napięcia historia pokazuje, jak z pragnienia zemsty i pomimo bolesnych strat może narodzić się najprawdziwsza miłość i nowy dom na końcu świata. Autorka daje nam poznać również powody rozdzielenia sióstr i wyjaśnia, dlaczego Iris nigdy nie wróciła na szkockie klify, które tak ukochała.

Estamos ante una historia que mezcla pasado y presente con una base bastante atractiva: una familia marcada por una especie de maldición; Skara 2800 a.C,unas rocas erigidas por un padre para guiar a sus hijas y marcadas por una maldición que condena a sus descendientes a la dispersión. Este mito desencadena la trama cuando Charles Blackmore desafía la tradición, provocando la ruina de su familia y la separación de sus cuatro hijas. La historia se articula en dos líneas temporales —pasado (1931) y presente—, siguiendo especialmente a Iris y, en paralelo, a Roz, una joven que descubre que su destino está ligado a ese pasado.
Que me gusta un libro donde haya una historia de hermanas, secretos y dos lineas temporales así que te podrás imaginar como lo he disfrutado. Se que este libro se compara mucho con los de las siete hermanas de Lucinda Riley, y podría decir que si,que es verdad que se parece mucho en cuanto a que son varias hermanas y cada una de ellas tendrá un libro donde irán revelando parte de la trama central que une los libros, pero no me ha importado para nada ya que lo he disfrutado y me ha parecido un gran inicio de saga.
La protagonista del pasado, Iris, es de esos personajes que tiran de la historia: decidida, con carácter y metida en situaciones complicadas. En el presente, Roz aporta esa parte de “voy a descubrir quién soy realmente”, que tanto me ha gustado.
En conclusión, para mi ha sido una gran lectura, ambas tramas tanto del pasado como del presente me han gustado y ya tengo gansa de saber que hermana será la siguiente en desvelarnos a donde fue a parar. Si te gustan las novelas de familia, misterio y amor eterno sin duda viaja a la isla de Skara para conocer a estas cuatro hermanas.

A sweeping family story spanning generations and set mainly on a beautiful Scottish island. This one was a very slow burner for me & although not a fan of the information dumps in the first half I was totally won over by the settings, relationships & generational connections. I was most invested in Iris’ story and enjoyed the suspense leading to a climatic ending. I am now looking forward to the rest of the series.

Boeken over dochters of zussen met een historische en hedendaagse verhaallijn zijn hot. Opaal is het eerste deel van de Dochters van de oceaan-serie. Je leert de Australische Roz kennen, die na een familiedrama vertrekt naar Europa. Op een dag stuit ze op een schilderij van vier oude staande stenen – een schilderij dat een onverklaarbare verbinding oproept met de ring aan haar vinger…
Opaal heeft verschillende verhaallijnen: Roz in het heden, en in het verleden leer je Iris kennen. Ze woont in Schotland met haar ouders en zusjes, tot er een groot drama voltrekt. Iris moet op zoek naar haar oom en stapt op een schip naar Ceylon. Verder leer je Finn kennen, een jonge advocaat die onderzoek doet naar de Blackmore Trust. Door de drie verhaallijnen is er veel afwisseling en vaart in het verhaal.
Het plot is intrigerend. Het is niet vernieuwend, de zoektocht naar de familieleden en het geheim van de zussen. Toch weet Buchanan een interessant plot vol mysterie neer te zetten. Ik was echt helemaal hooked tijdens het lezen en kon niet wachten om te weten hoe het verder ging. Zelf toen ik het boek uit had: ik wil zo snel mogelijk het volgende deel lezen!
Ondanks het spannende plot en de vlotte vertelstijl, is Opaal een boek waar je eigenlijk je tijd voor moet nemen. De setting is filmisch beschreven: van het Schotse Skaga tot de Australische outback: ik voelde me écht even op die plekken. Opaal weet de balans tussen het plot en de details van de setting precies goed te balanceren.
Tijdens haar verblijf in Europa leert Roz meer over haar familiegeschiedenis, en hoe haar verhaal bij dat van Iris hoort. Haar eigen verhaal biedt ook ruimte voor meer: er zijn ontluikende vriendschappen met Finn en Hugo, waarvan ik de relatie met Hugo hartverwarmend vond. En voor romantiek! Maar anders dan bij bijvoorbeeld de Verloren dochters-serie, is de focus hier minder op de romantische verhaallijn en meer op het familiemysterie.
Ik had niet verwacht dat Opaal me zo zou meeslepen: de combinatie van de fijne setting, het mysterie en de relaties tussen de karakters zorgen voor een page-turner.

This was an excellent introduction to a new series, covering a family saga, differing timelines, time slip and some light mysticism and magic thrown in.
This initial book in the series sets the scene superbly, and follows the adventures of Iris who leaves a remote Scottish setting in 1931 following the death of her mother and her father losing his money to find her uncle who she hopes can rescue the four sisters from the situation they find themselves in. She sets off on a boat to Ceylon not knowing if he is even still on the Island. She is in for a journey,
Alongside this we have Roz in the current timeline who leaves Australia following the death of her mother, and to get away from the dangers posed by her stepfather. In London she encounters a painting of four ancient standing stones which causes a mystical reaction to a ring that has been passed down through her family, without knowing it she too is about to head off on an amazing journey.
This was a truly wonderful book that had me hooked from the very beginning and just never let me go. There is great pacing and story telling in the story, and it is rather like revealing the layers of an onion in both timelines. There is a great group of characters that support the two main characters. You cannot help but fall in love with the two main characters in the story, caring for them deeply, and needing to know their story. The book almost reads itself. The author does a great job through the book, playing with your emotions and along the way there are some sad moments that leave you reeling.
I really cannot recommend this book highly enough, and was so pleased to find out it was part of a series and the second book, about another sister, is set up to be published. Now just the agonising wait until January 2027 for that book. As a great fan of Lucinda Riley’s work I cannot pay any higher compliment than say that Eleanor Buchanan reminds me of her and the wonderful Seven Sisters series. A new favourite series and author has been found!

Nagu enamik minu kätte jõudvaid raamatuid, jäi ka see maalilise kaanekujundusega teos mulle esimest korda silma just Rahva Raamatus, uute väljaannete riiulil. Kujunduse põhjal ootasin tavalist suvelugemist, tegelikult sain aga märksa mitmekihilisema loo, müsteeriumi, mil suvehooajaga otsest seost polnudki.
Kuigi esimene pool loost oli minu jaoks pisut igav, müstilised detailid segased ja raamatu järele haaramine raske, siis teine pool loost (nii minevikulugu kui ka olevikus toimuv) tekitas minus juba teatavat huvi ja nii lugu ise kui ka lugemine läksid tempokamalt. Samas, kui üldiselt lugemiskogemusele tagasi vaadata, siis olen ikkagi pigem realistlike lugude ja loogiliste seletuste fänn ehk selline needuste ja maagiliste kivide põimimine reaalsusega tekitas minus kahetisi tundeid. Lisaks tunnen, et minu hindepunkte võttis vähemaks draamarohkus - mõrv, kättemaksuhimulise mõrvari eest varjumine, kaugetel maadel võõra rikka onu otsimine, mitmed surmad ja õnnetused kõik koos tundusid lihtsalt ülepaisutatuna ning jätsid ebarealistliku mulje. Teisalt aga hoidsid sellised sündmused pinget ning kui need kahe tegevusliini peale ära jagada, siis polnudki võib-olla nii palju? Või siiski...
Ka autori stiil oli üpris keskpärane ning mis mind kohati isegi häirisid, olid lausete ja sõnade kordused, tihti lausa ühe lõigu või lehekülje jooksul.
Tegelikult oli lool ka mitmeid positiivseid külgi/õnnestumisi. Näiteks õdedevahelised suhted olid tõeliselt armsad (eriti meeldisid mulle Irise õdedele kirjutatud kirjad) ning järk-järgult lahtirulluvad perekonnasaladused hoidsid põnevust. Kuigi kord ootasin rohkem Irise, kord Rozi peatükke, siis tegelikult nautisin väga seda, kuidas kaks lugu põimusid, üksteist täiendasid ning lugejal omamoodi puslet kokku panna aitasid. Samuti saan kiita autori loodud erilisi ja kontrastseid keskkondi - metsik ja müstiline Šotimaa, troopiline Sri Lanka, Austraalia karm ääremaa -, mida oli lugejana üpris lihtne ette kujutada.
"The Sea Stone Sisters" on ideaalne sulle, kui armastad draamade- ja saladusterohkeid lugusid, kus juhtub palju ning kus müstilised esemed ja sündmused on põimitud reaalsusega. Oli detaile, mis muutsid lugemiskogemuse minu jaoks pisut vähem meeldivaks, kuid üldiselt saan teda ikkagi pigem soovitada ning olen üsna kindel, et loen ka sarja teise osa läbi, kui see jaanuaris ilmub.

Iris and her three sisters, Rose, Lily and the youngest, Daisy would go to the stones for thinking, for planning and for a feeling of belonging. It was their father who had uprooted the stones and, as local myth would have it, had cursed the land and the people by so doing.
This is an epic family saga, told on two timelines; the 1930s and present day. I found it gripping and affecting with characters who are sympathetic and very real. Buchanan writes vividly not just about the people she populates the story with and the times they live in, but as the story travels from Scotland to ‘Ceylon’ to Australia, her descriptive powers are outstanding in evoking a sense of place, from the mists and chill winds of Skara to the heavy fragrant heat of Ceylon to the choking, dusty savage heat of the Australian outback.
It’s a story of courage and resolve. When Iris’s father loses his business and the family becomes destitute, Iris promises her dying mother to find their elusive uncle Ralph so he can repay money he owes the family. Unfortunately he never replies to letters and, as far as they know, he lives in Ceylon. And so Iris embarks on a dangerous journey always with the intention of returning to Skara and her sisters. Disaster and tragedy follow and the sisters are scattered to the four winds. Will they ever be together again? Will Iris ever return to her belovéd Scotland?
In the present day we follow Roz. Following a terrible tragedy in her family, Roz flees Australia for London. Passing an antique bookstore one day, she sees an old painting of the Four Sisters standing stones which resonates with her and this is a pivotal moment in her story.
I loved this book and the characters in it. Her descriptions of Scotland, beautiful but wild and remote, resonated very much with me.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys excellent vivid writing and a gripping story with wonderful characters.

I absolutely loved the mystery woven through this book. It was so unpredictable and effortlessly moved between past and present.
The story begins in Scotland, 2800 BC, where a grieving father raises four huge stones overlooking the sea, hoping they will guide his four lost daughters home. Before setting off in search for them, he lays a curse upon anyone who dares disturb the stones.
Fast forward to 1919, where Charles Blackmore, living there with his wife and four daughters, has the stones laid flat because they spoil the view from his newly built house, dismissing the curse as nonsense. From that moment, a series of tragic events is set into motion.
This first book tells the story of the eldest daughter Iris. We follow her in 1931 alongside Roz in the present day, their stories woven together and their lives almost mirroring each others in unexpected ways. With a deep pull of home and powerful sisterly bonds at its heart, the story is layered with loss, tragedy, fear and a subtle magical eeriness.
It’s such a rich family saga with wonderful characters spanning generations. I loved piecing together the puzzle and following Iris on her journey in search of her uncle.
The writing is so beautifully done, the places described so vividly, from Scotland to Ceylon, with my favourite being the Australian outback with the heat and the dust, so easy to imagine in my mind.
With the sisters being separated and only given hints as to their whereabouts I am now so eager to discover what has happened to them in the books that follow.
If you enjoy historical fiction, with a touch of romance and mystery this is definitely for you, such an amazing start to the series.

Un gran comienzo para una serie familiar, con intriga y ficción histórica, muy bien contada, con dos líneas temporales, muy bien ambientada entre Escocia y Australia principalmente.
Me ha parecido muy entretenida su lectura y al final no se si me ha gustado más el relato de Iris, con sus viajes y aventuras por Ceilan y Australia o la actualidad de Roz con su complicada vida y toda la investigación y sensaciones que transmite con cada descubrimiento que hace.
Estan muy bien enlazadas ambas partes, saltando de una época a otra, con capitulos sin un orden establecido y en ocasiones en forma de cartas escritas principalmente por Iris a sus 3 hermanas.
Iris me ha parecido una mujer muy valiente, luchadora y de gran corazón, siempre nostálgica, echa mucho de menos su tierra y a su familia y siempre los tiene presentes.
Roz es una mujer que huye, que se esconde, con miedos e inseguridades, siente una conexión muy fuerte con Skara, a partir del hallazgo del anillo de su madre y la visión de un cuadro de ese lugar, pero también rechaza cualquier acercamiento o relación amorosa.
El final me ha encantado, ver que Iris encontró su hogar y fue feliz y la relación entre ambas, ajnque se intuye, no esta claro hasta ultima hora, en la actualidad me ha parecido la terminación un poco arrebatada, lo que sucede con Richard, algo surrealista, pero me alegro de todo lo demás con Drew.
Hay personajes como Finn, que también cuentan parte de la historia y espero que tenga más protagonismo en los siguientes libros, además estoy deseando saber que paso con las otras hermanas y sus descendientes femeninas.
Las leyendas y supersticiones están muy bien representadas, Skara esta considerado un lugar maldito.
Lo recomiendo, si que recuerda a las historias de Lucinda, pero con otro estilo y bastante imaginación, una lectura muy emocionante y llena de aventuras.

Grāmata, kurā, manuprāt, ir viss pareizās proporcijās - spriedze, kaislība, noslēpumi, nedaudz mistika, ceļojumi, kolorīti apraksti, arī smeldze un ilgošanās... Ar patiesu baudu lasīju par Īrisas ceļojumu no Skotijas krastiem uz krasi atšķirīgo Ceilonu un svelmaino Austrāliju. Laiks pirms Otrā pasaules kara, šķiet, bija daudzu laimes meklētāju laiks, kas dažiem vainagojās ar panākumiem, citiem tieši pretēji - lika saprast, ka patiesās vērtības ir ģimenē. Man gan bija sava teorija, kas bija jāpaveic, lai atrisinātu gadsimtiem ilgo neveiksmju sēriju - jānoliek atpakaļ stateniski nogāztie akmens bluķi, bet autore tomēr to pavērsa citā gultnē. Ja interesē dzimtu likteņi un tikai nojaušama kaislību spriedze starp mīlniekiem, šo grāmatu noteikti ir vērts lasīt. Gaja atzīšanās Īrisai par savām jūtām bija neparasta, bet tajā pat laikā skaista.

I haven’t been this excited for a new series in a such a long time. The Sea Stone Sisters by Eleanor Buchanan completely swept me away.
A dual timeline switching between the 1930s and modern day, the story follows four sisters determined to save their beloved family home. Their journey is filled with courage, loyalty, and the kind of sisterhood that feels both fierce and deeply moving.
Present day, on the other side of the world in Australia, a young girl faces a very different challenge — trying to change the path of her own fate without the support of siblings beside her.
What makes this story so fascinating is how it weaves genealogy, family legacy, and female relationships together so beautifully.
It’s rich, atmospheric historical fiction with adventure, heart, and just a touch of magic. The kind of book that makes you feel completely immersed in the story and deeply invested in the characters.

Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit drie hoofdpersonen en dit vind ik vernieuwend. Daardoor duurde het wel even voor ik in het verhaal zat. Maar toen ik er eenmaal in zat, zat ik er ook goed in. De brieven zijn vrij fragmentarisch opgeschreven en worden onderbroken door gedachten. Dit is anders dan ik gewend ben, maar maakt het juist speels. Ingewikkelde familiebanden liepen als rode draad door het boek heen en daar kan ik altijd erg van genieten. Zo ook in dit boek.
Een mooie wijze les die ik uit het verhaal heb gehaald: je gaat mensen pas echt waarderen als je beseft dat ze je afgenomen kunnen worden. Dit komt op meerdere plekken terug in het boek. Een mooie zin die mij bij is gebleven na het lezen: "Ze vertelde dat ze als kind bang was geweest dat ze de pijn om dat verlies niet te boven zou komen, en dat ze doodsbang was geweest om opnieuw van iemand te houden en diegene dan weer kwijt te raken."
Een mooie wijze les die ik uit het verhaal heb gehaald: je gaat mensen pas echt waarderen als je beseft dat ze je afgenomen kunnen worden. Dit komt op meerdere plekken terug in het boek. Een mooie zin die mij bij is gebleven na het lezen: "Ze vertelde dat ze als kind bang was geweest dat ze de pijn om dat verlies niet te boven zou komen, en dat ze doodsbang was geweest om opnieuw van iemand te houden en diegene dan weer kwijt te raken."

THE SEA STONE SISTERS by Eleanor Buchanan is a fantastic start to a new dual time series featuring four sisters, four ancient standing stones, and four very special – possibly magical – rings. This is the story of the first sister, Iris, as well as present-day heroine Roz, and an enchanting, edge-of-your-seat tale it is! Told against the stunning backdrops of the wild Scottish west coast, 1930s Ceylon and the Australian outback, the author’s detailed research vividly brings it all to life. The reader is caught up in a web of intrigue, danger and mystery that ultimately leads both Iris and Roz to their destiny. And while their journeys end, the reader is left eager to find out what happened to the other three sisters … I would highly recommend this to fans of dual time stories – it’s wonderful and not to be missed!

Opaal is het eerste deel van de serie Dochters van de oceaan. De ingrediënten zijn geschiedenis, sterke vrouwen en een mysterie. Tja, 1 keer raden: dat móest ik lezen. Het maakte mijn verwachtingen meer dan waar.
Het verhaal zit slim in elkaar. Er zijn veel (omgekeerde) parallellen tussen heden en verleden. Buchanan heeft een prettige schrijfstijl: onderhoudend, boeiend, fris, goede spanningsboog en een vleugje magie dat precies past. Het leest dan ook als een trein. Echt een heerlijk boek om mee weg te duiken tijdens je vakantie of op een regenachtige dag. Je zit zo in de wereld van Skara. En je wilt er niet meer weg.

A moving, mysterious, often heartwrenching story of sisterhood, loss and family spanning time periods, countries and characters. Some historical novels take far too long to get going and can sometimes bore me, but the author kept me engaged from the start in every strand of the storyline. I think Iris and her sisters were my favourite to follow - which makes me excited that this is the first in a series! - but I loved how everyone else’s stories wove together. Although some of the ending was a little predictable, there were many unexpected twists, and even a hint of the supernatural, which made it exciting still. A great debut that I’d definitely recommend - thank you to the author, Headline Books and NetGalley for the ARC!
