I remember reading this series when I was a boy, selecting a Famous American every week or so from the Northeast (Philly) Regional Library. My wife came across this volume. It does not disappoint: solid, non-saccharine prose, beautiful illustrations.

I loved the Childhood of Famous American Series. I borrowed them from the library of St. Patrick's School in Elkhorn Wisconsin in about 1968.
