Lila Fahner’s world crumbled when her husband died, leaving her lost in a haze of grief. Just when a shimmer of hope sparks within her soul, she is ripped from the world and thrust into the veil, a bridge between the realms of light and shadow. Marked as a portal jumper, the only one of her kind, Lila is brought to the Solaris Citadel and joins the Guild of Champions. Among them, she finds not only the strength to survive but the warmth of friendship that begins to piece her devastated heart back together. Yet, it's Cyrus—the king's son, with a past as mournful as her own, that ignites something far deeper. Their connection burns with an intensity neither can deny. But in a world where different realms wage war, deception is always close. When secrets are unveiled and betrayal strikes, Lila is left shattered. Hunted by enemies unknown to her and haunted by a prophecy that claims she may be the realms' only hope, Lila must decide who to trust and whether her heart can survive the battles ahead.
Hi! I’m Lea Livingston, and I never imagined I’d become a writer. Growing up, I spent most of my time sketching, reading, and imagining stories, but I followed my love of animals into biology and became a zookeeper. It was a dream job in many ways, but I eventually realized it wasn’t where I wanted to stay.
I made a career shift into the corporate world, but my love for fantasy never left. One day, I started writing down the stories that had been living in my head, and that’s how Righteous Light was born. It’s the first book in a romantic fantasy series full of vivid worlds, fierce characters, and high-stakes adventure.
I live in the Midwest with my amazing husband and our two huskies. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me outside, traveling, or spending time with friends and family, probably still dreaming up the next story.
ARC reader here I enjoyed the idea of the story and throughly enjoyed the ending. The story felt as though it was dragging and building up entirely to the ending moment but in a way that was frustrating. This author clearly put in their time to world building which I appreciated but with where there story ends I’m just a bit confused. I believe this author has left themselves with room to grow with the story and their writing.
This is a truly a great story line, I am also upset I have to wait for the second book but I think the wait will be worth it. The fight between light and dark, the secrets, the twists and the development of characters with a little hint of mystery is mesmerizing! I found myself wanting to continuously wanting to be reading this book, if I didn’t need my job I would have quit to read this all day. It is well written, descriptive of the places and people that give you flashbacks of childhood stories/movies and the author gives you a strong, female character that made me feel like a very empowered female. While I won’t be engaging in the fight of light and dark, I will continue fighting for my life every morning after I’ve spent too long reading into the night. This was an amazing read, can’t wait for what’s next.
There's only one problem with Righteous Light... having to wait for book two!
Lila, the FMC, is a breath of fresh air. As a reader in her 30's, it was great to connect with a character. Lila is real while still having that badass fantasy aspect. I can't wait to see what else she will accomplish!
The supporting characters pull you in, completely. I was rooting for every member of the Guild of Champions throughout the entire book.
Excited to see what else Lea Livingston has in store for the readers!
This was so good I hope she is writing the next book ! You left us hanging and how it got twisted at the end was crazy ! Thank you so much for letting me read your arc ! I’m definitely will recommend
First time ARC reader AND Goodreads reviewer here! Thank you so much Lea for giving me the chance to read your work! It’s been a bit since I’ve really dug into any writing like, and Righteous Light was an utter blast.
For a first time writer, the descriptions of locations in this book were professional-level incredible. There was never a moment where I couldn’t envision where we were and what a place looked like. The language was descriptive and beautiful, but not overly flowery to the point of confusion. Honestly this is a difficult thing to capture, and to also keep consistent throughout the book. The world Lea created is both vibrant and intriguing, and I can’t wait to see more of it in book 2!
On the other hand, I feel the dialogue struggled with maintaining that same level of consistency. In the beginning, the dialogue felt a little plain and at times a bit awkwardly phrased; it wasn’t drawing me into any of the conversations in the same way that the aforementioned descriptions were drawing me into the world. I especially felt this way toward the start of the book which made the first 40% a little slow to get through. As the story continued and picked up, the dialogue got tremendously better (which is how I read the last 60% in only a few hours one morning😅).
Speaking of which, the pacing definitely followed the dialogue in terms of flow; the beginning was a little hard to get through as it felt simultaneously too slow and like there was way too much information going on at once. Once we got around that mid-section again though, it got a lot better. Things weren’t rushed, and we were able to sit with and digest the information we were being given.
While it took a bit for me to warm up to her, Lila (our FMC) is a lovely breath of fresh air. It’s SO nice to have an older protagonist that has lived a very full life of love and heartbreak before the events of the story. It gives her a unique perspective on the events unfolding around her, especially as she learns to tackle her own grief. I would love to see her lean into more of her “real life experiences” in the sequel to really give us even more of a sense of who Lila was before everything went down and just how different (and maybe similar) she is after what she’s experienced in the first book!
My only real gripe with Lila is with how beautiful of descriptions we got of the environments, the world, the other characters, she was the only thing I couldn’t really “see.” While we got a few descriptions here and there of parts of her, I never saw the full picture.
Overall, I’m a big fan of our core group of pals (for the most part). Each is unique, and play a role in Lila’s growth. My only complaint is that I wish we would have seen more of certain characters. Kymani is very interesting to me, and while I think there might be more in store for her soon, I wish we could have spent a little more time with her here to help establish more of a connection between her and Lila.
Effie completely steals the show here, particularly with her shift in character toward the end of the book. You come to love her bubbly nature and admire the fact that she overcame her own grief. However, while I LOVED the twist at the end, it felt a little quick. I wish we would have gotten even a little hint at the darkness lurking beneath that Irish accent. Just enough to make us think “hmmm” but not so much so as to keep the turn of events a shock.
One of the things that I am both very meh on but also supremely intrigued about is Cyrus. To be completely honest, I thought he was lame and I did not like his relationship with Lila😂 I felt as though their relationship came on VERY suddenly, and I didn’t understand why Lila felt she had such a strong connection with him. The only big thing I can remember is that she thought he was hot! But otherwise, he babied her, did not believe she was capable of this potential destiny that was unfolding before her, and he obviously has some weird unresolved trauma from his ex! Looooots of red flags. Even their sweeter moments (the initial saucy scene where he was respectful of her decision to NOT) almost didn’t feel believable because he was kind of giving off immature, maybe nice-guy vibes since moment one!
HOWEVER! This almost feels intentional👀 From the very start, I clocked the mysterious guy left behind as someone of grand importance. We know this to be true now, but maybe he’s even MORE important than we think?? So as much as I disliked Cyrus/the pairing, if it turns out to be the ye olde surprise man candy switcheroo, it was set up VERY well.
Overall. Righteous Light is a wonderful journey that possesses some beautiful landscapes, some unique and charming characters, and some very interesting world building (which I cannot wait to see more of). If I could do decimal points, I would probably actually give this first book a 3.75⭐️. There is an IMMENSE amount of potential in these pages; Lea has already mastered the art of description and showing us the world, rather than telling us about it which is an incredible feat for a newer writer. Now the next step is making the dialogue just as engaging, giving us even more on our side characters, and to kick Cyrus to the curb!
Totally kidding on that last one. Unless?👀
I’m rounding my rating up to 4⭐️, however, because that last chunk of the book was just a complete roller coaster that would not end. So much so that for days after finishing, I still couldn’t stop talking about it!
For Lea Livingston’s debut book, Righteous Light is a fantastic read that shows immense promise for a fantastic series to come. Maybe sure to snag a physical copy when it releases, and I can’t wait for book 2!!

Righteous Light by Lea Livingston follows our FMC, Lila, as she navigates her grief following the death of her husband. When she finally gathers her willpower to not let her grief consume her, she is pulled into a world that she had only ever seen in movies. Lila had been marked with insignias of two warring worlds- the Realm of Light and the Realm of Shadows. Since Lila had received both marks, she could “jump” back and forth using portals in the “veil” between the realms. Throughout the book Lila is trained by a Guild of Champions to fight in the inevitable clash between the realms. Lila slowly accepts her new life and starts to find her purpose when she discovers secrets and betrayals from her new “friends”. Lila flees into the Shadow Realm following these betrayals and we are left on a cliffhanger when she encounters something unexpected upon arrival.
I had the amazing opportunity to be an ARC reader for Righteous Light. Romantasy is definitely my wheelhouse in terms of most read genre. I finished this book in 2 days, and let me tell you, it is going to be a great series. Righteous Light is definitely a slow burn; the world building was extensive. All the supporting characters really pull you in as the reader. I audibly gasped at the end of the book when we are left on a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to see how this story builds! Thank you Lea Livingston for creating one of my new favorite series!

Thank you so much to the author for this truly enchanting ARC!
What a ride this book was! Righteous Light is a spellbinding journey that grips you from the very first page, plunging you into a whirlwind of heartbreak and raw emotion alongside the protagonist, Lila. The opening is so visceral that it feels like you’re grieving with her, only to be gently pulled out of the haze as she finds her footing in an enchanting new world.
The author’s prose is immersive, painting every scene so vividly that you feel as though you’re living each moment with Lila. The world-building, described with such vivid detail, it feels like a living, breathing place you could step into. The magic system is equally captivating, hinging on a delicate balance of light and dark emotions drawn from human dreams—a concept that’s both innovative and thought-provoking, with a distinct Avatar-like vibe that adds to its allure. It’s a world you can’t help but want to explore further.
Each scene is crafted with such care that you’re transported into Lila’s world, feeling every emotion and marveling at the beauty of the world. This is a book that lingers with you, the vivid world and unique magic system make it a truly enchanting read. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book!!
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to read this book early, let’s jump into my thoughts…
I loved Lila, the FMC. I am impressed at her strength after losing her husband. I loved that we got to see what grief can look like, and trying to move forward despite wanting to crawl into a hole. I love how she doesn’t want to be seen or treated as weak, and she shouldn’t be! I’m curious to see where her journey leads in book two.
I was not a fan of Cyrus, the MMC, don’t come for me. I tried to like him, but found myself disinterested. He seemed almost too overbearing, and flat. And let’s be real, he lied to her. I’m actually secretly hoping Doran might be Lila’s love interest in book two…
The side characters were interesting, Effie being my favorite… phew that ending cliffhanger though. That girl deserves peace after everything that ensued.
The concept of there being a veil, and the light and dark realms was intriguing! The descriptions were very detailed, and I could imagine everything vividly.
I am absolutely appalled I have to wait for another book to see what happens next, ha. I can’t wait though! All in all, this book is worth being added to your TBR list ;)
This was a fantastic debut novel. I feel like the writing was very intentional and all the details given were necessary for the whole storyline. Sometimes I feel like we can cut hundred of pages from books but this one everything was intentional and kept the plot moving forward. I love finally having a FMC in their 30’s and not 20’s and she has brains and a backbone along with sass. The theme of having a light and dark realm along with a veil is an intriguing topic. I appreciate that grief is a topic built into this and learning how to cope/what comes after grief. The portal jumping and how she sets up the characters is very well done. Love Effie and how it ended I did not see that plot twist coming. Also, poor Kane forever in my heart, I wasn’t ready for that. Also, can’t decide if I still like Cyrus or want to punch him so I’ll be curious to see what Lila does in the follow up. I just knew Doran was alive and there so much more to the shadows realm and Alvara’s story and can’t wait for more of that to unfold. Cato I want to punch after that whole end debacle, hoping there’s some redemption for him.

Righteous Light is a fantasy romance that absolutely swept me off my feet and dragged my heart through fire!In the best way! You’re pulled into a rich, magical world, where nothing is quite as it seems. At the center of it all is Lila who is as fierce as she is vulnerable. From heart break to a magical love story that burns slow, but hot enough to leave scorch marks on your soul. What makes Righteous Light shine (pun intended) is its emotional depth. The characters feel alive, flawed, real, and brave in ways that made me want to keep reading for them. The worldbuilding is immersive without ever slowing down the pace, and the author strikes a near-perfect balance between magic, political intrigue, and deeply personal stakes.
If you’re a fan of Throne of Glass, Fourth Wing, or ACOTAR, this book belongs on your shelf!
Righteous Light is pure magic. From the very first page, I was swept into a world that defies logic and expectation—where the impossible becomes not only real, but beautiful. It’s whimsical in the best way, full of wonder and heart, and written with such imagination that it lingers with you long after the final page.
As a beta reader, I had the privilege of experiencing this story before its release, and I can honestly say it’s unlike anything I’ve read before. Lea Livingston weaves together rich, lyrical prose and mind-bending fantasy in a way that feels both fresh and timeless. Expect to be enchanted, surprised, and utterly transported. I know I was.
If you’re looking for a story that breaks the mold and reminds you why you fell in love with reading in the first place—Righteous Light is it. Happy reading!
I couldn’t put Righteous Light down! From the very first page, I was drawn into the story and completely immersed in the world the author created. The character development is rich and layered, with each journey weaving seamlessly into the next in a way that feels natural and deeply engaging. I found myself not only invested in the main characters, but also in the smaller moments that gave the story heart and depth.
The pacing kept me hooked, balancing action, emotion, and world-building beautifully. Every chapter pulled me further in, and I often felt like I was right there experiencing it alongside the characters. It’s rare to find a book that combines vivid storytelling with such emotional resonance, but this one does it brilliantly.
I can’t wait for book two—the author clearly knows how to captivate her audience and leave them eager for more.
I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book. The only issue I have with it is waiting for book 2.
The Story starts with Lila grieving the death of her husband Finn. During her grieving period, she is attacked and chased by something dark. Only to be rescued and pulled into a "Fantasy" world of the light.
She learns she is marked with the Shadow and Light realm insignia. She is special and can jump into both realms. She is forced to join the Guild of Champions and in the process, she finds friendship and eventually love. Or so she thought.
If you love fantasy, romance, betrayal, and a story with a strong female character, you will love this book. This was a 5-star read for me even though I am forced to wait for a 2nd book.

Absolutely loved this story. There was so much world building that I had no problem visualizing everything while I read. Loved the dynamic relationships between all the characters. I connected with them and instantly felt like I was part of their team, learning right along with Lila. The plot moved along quickly, taking me on a mysterious journey as Lila tried to uncover secrets that would help them defeat the shadow creatures. The story increased in intensity at the end, ending on a cliffhanger of chaos and absolute disaster for all the characters. There are so many unanswered questions that I am anxious to discover the answers for in book 2.
I received a free advanced copy and am willingly leaving this review. Definitely recommend this book.

This book was a very fast decisive five star for me. I’ve only just jumped into romantasy and I’m absolutely enjoying my journey discovering indie authors, this author has superb talent to tell a story. The main character has a very bad trauma when she looses someone very close to her. The fantasy bit is when she’s between worlds, her human life and the realm that’s beckoning her. She finds love and I sighed, thinking that at last she’s going to be cared for and have the love she deserves However that didn’t work….the past comes to the fore and devistation strikes.
For any romantasy reader or you would like to start to delve into this genre, I highly recommend this one.
ARC reader, , I think this author has incredible potential. Her scene description and attention to detail is incredible. I gave only 2 stars because I thought overall the plot felt somehow rushed yet dragged out. I never really felt like I knew the characters nor cared what happened to them.
The plot itself has great potential and I want to know what happens next so I will be reading book 2 for sure. I just found myself waiting for the story to “get started” for lack of better words in this book.
Side note, I do love Effie she’s an incredible character and I hope she gets her revenge 😈
ARC-review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Righteous Light by Lea Livingston was an absolutely breathtaking debut! From the very first page, I was hooked by the rich worldbuilding, the heart-pounding twists, and the way the romance was woven so seamlessly into the fantasy. The characters were complex and unforgettable, each moment pulling me deeper into their journey. Livingston’s writing style is lyrical yet fast-paced, keeping me unable to put the book down. This is a story that lingers long after the final page, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!
A fun quick read complete with romance, a loyal steed, and a fun bestie.
This book was a little hard to get into from the beginning but I figured out it was just me. The story starts at the end of Lila grieving her late husband and deciding to move forward. This can feel rushed because we just met her but really, it’s been over a year since his death. Lila is a fun FMC who embraces the twists and mysteries sprinkled throughout the book.
I always read in search of the twist and definitely saw what was coming but I still couldn’t put it down. I’ll be waiting for book two.
I read this book as an early read for author Lea Livingston. Overall I liked the book quite well. It started out a bit confusing and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it but the more I read the better the story got! And the next thing you know I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what happened next! If you like magic, fantasy, secrets, betrayals and some morally grey characters this book is for you!! I highly recommend you add this book to your tbr!!! It ends on a cliffhanger so I hope there’s more to come!! Definitely a good read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall, a very good debut work. The scenes were set beautifully, the characters were described and intertwined well, and the mysteries were well placed.
I did find the beginning a bit of a struggle to get through and keep up with, but I am glad I stuck it out. I only wish I didn't have to wait for the rest of Lila's story. Had I known this was going to be a series and end with a bit of a cliffhanger, I may not have signed up for the ARC read.
I am so upset that I have to wait for book 2 to come out!! I absolutely loved this book! I was pulled into the fantasy world in the first chapter!! The FMC Lila was so bad ass from start to finish! I enjoyed the story line of light and dark. I feel like the story line was very well put together and definitely made it easy to keep you wanting to read more. I hoped it doesn’t take long for the second book to come out because I have to know what happens!!
To begin with - Long time fantasy fan, not much interest in the New Romantic/Fantasy craze. This book was a great entry for me into the category with a great character building that stayed true as the story line unfolded. No unnecessary complexity or crazy, hard to imagine aspects.. Simply a struggle main character who finds her way in a new world. Fun read and looking forward to the story continuing! Highly recommend, even to my more traditional fantasy friends.
This story is absolutely breathtaking! From the very first chapter, it pulls you into a world of danger and power. Every twist left me desperate to read just one more page. Vivid world-building and a story that blends sacrifice and resilience. The characters feel real and raw, their growth both heartbreaking and inspiring. A must read for lovers of fantasy worlds like no other with a dash of romance and the ultimate battle between light and dark.
4 1/2⭐️ I really enjoyed this from beginning to end. I thought it was well paced and entertaining. I loved the fmc Lila, she was very relatable. The world building was great, and the side characters were entertaining. I can’t wait to find out where the story goes in book 2. A huge thank you to Lea Livingston for the opportunity to be an ARC reader, all opinions are my own.
I was lucky to receive an ARC of this book. I found Lila’s story f grief and coping very relatable, it’s nice to read a book around someone on a similar age range. If you are someone who loves a lot of detail and world building, this is an excellent book for you. I am eager to see what happens on book 2.
I enjoyed the book but felt the story kind of dragged in the beginning. There is a lot of world building that also seems a little bit disconnected. Overall, it is a good story that has been set up for further exploration. The ending did leave me a little bit confused but I am guessing that is probably the point if she is writing a sequel.
I give this a 3.5! It was great palate cleanser and a quick listen. I feel this is a good start in the series and can see the growth that will come in the next book. I am honestly not attached to any of the characters from the first book. I hope that I can connect with them more in the second book.
Captivating from the very start! You will experience just about every emotion when it comes to this book and it is soooooo worth it! Absolutely cannot wait for the 2nd book to this! The cliff hanger is intense!
This was my first time being an ARC and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lea’s first romantasy novel. The vivid descriptions made me feel like I was right along side our heroine on her journey. The pace of the book is perfect and leaves readers looking forward to the next book!
Righteous Light is a fantasy adventure for any reader. It started slow setting up important background for the twists and turns near the end. It kept me as a reader on my toes the further I got into it. Lila is a strong and bold character taken into a new realm.
