The Hidden Eye is the breathtaking fourth novel in the thrilling Merseyside crime series from Malcolm Hollingdrake, author of the best-selling Harrogate crime series.

Antisocial behaviour is on the rise on the streets of Liverpool. Swift and silent, a sinister gang is patrolling the city on electric motorbikes, scouting for opportunities to steal.

DI April Decent and her trusted team of detectives are facing a complex series of crimes including the cold case of a young woman who died almost a year earlier. The perpetrator remains in the shadows, a traumatised past leaving them hell-bent on atonement, hoping to find a way to cleanse their soul of guilt.

‘The Controller’ of the gang pulls their strings, their orders becoming ever more ambitious and demanding, until a robbery goes wrong, and a gang member is arrested.

Can DI April Decent’s trusted police team manage to piece together the fragmented trail of evidence and track down this malevolent puppet master? Can they make Liverpool’s streets feel safer once more?

The Hidden Eye is ideal for fans of Simon McCleave, J M Dalgliesh and Ian Rankin.

This is the fourth book in the Merseyside Crime Series, however, it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

In Liverpool, there has been a spike of thefts committed by men on electric bikes, who would go for people’s possessions like handbags.

This has happened to Kate Nolan, who was running an errand, a surprise for her partner Tim, when one of the gang members tried to steal her handbag. He didn’t anticipate that Kate would cling on to her possession, and as a result, an accident occurred where she tragically died.

Her case goes unresolved.

A man called ‘The Controller’ is pulling the strings, telling the gang members which crimes to commit. While they are doing their bit, he is watching, observing the scenery and the people witnessing the incidents.

Caitlin Byrne filmed one of the robberies and posted it on her social media. She’s killed by the gang.

Other people who filmed and posted the robberies online, either disappear, or die.

Can DI Decent and her team get to the bottom of this?

I absolutely adored this book. I read it in a couple of evenings as I was hooked from the very first page.

I was desperate to discover the identity of ‘The Controller’ and I was stunned by his planning and execution of the crimes. This person had a lot of time to think about what was going to happen, how, and where.

As I was reading the book, the term “bystander effect” came to my mind. In psychology (which I studied), it refers to a phenomenon where the more people witness the event, the less likely they will offer to help.

Nowadays, as this book has brilliantly portrayed, we have the added element of the mobile phones, and how quickly people whip them out to record a crime. In The Hidden Eye nobody was helping the person who was being attacked or robbed, instead, the witnesses would film it on their mobiles, and some would share on their socials. It was sad to read it, but it was so accurate!

This was the first book that I’ve read from this author, but it won’t be my last. I need to read the first three in this series.

Extremely well plotted and written, Malcolm yet again had me completely engrossed. Vivid descriptions. Characters I enjoyed meeting again from his previous book plus plenty of new characters who all felt so real. Some I felt sorry for. Some I wanted to see behind bars.

There are few storylines which come together very satisfactorily although I was taken by surprise by the sudden ending as I was expecting there was at least another chapter!

The main storyline of the thugs on electric bikes causing havoc and stealing is exactly what is happening in the real world, sadly. It is inevitable some of these thefts will end up similar to the storyline here where a woman fights back and is killed. Scary times.

I enjoyed the small side story about the dentist which popped up now and again throughout the book. It made me chuckle.

Love Malcolm’s sense of humour which came through frequently. There is a comparison to Cluedo which made me laugh out loud.

I’m hoping there will be more from the wonderfully named DS Skeeter Warlock and DI April Decent.

A seemingly innocuous beginning quickly leads to tragedy. A premium bond win for Kate Nolan presents her with the opportunity of booking a surprise holiday abroad for her partner and herself. However, she happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a gang of youths on electric motorcycles are carrying out a robbery and she gets caught up in the fallout. An incident which is caught on mobile phone footage, which provides April and her team a starting point.

A mere glance at Jane Mapp’s excellent cover brings evokes brooding malevolence before the reader opens the book and they won’t be disappointed. This is a thoroughly modern crime thriller centring upon a crime that is currently a scourge of life in many urban centres, that of organised gangs on electric bikes and scooters, bag and mobile phone snatching. Low key crimes compared to murder, but like much antisocial behaviour, but something the average reader would be far more likely to encounter, as either a victim or witness. As with many crimes it can also become a gateway into more serious crime as the story highlights.

It also scrutinises modern attitudes and societal breakdowns. Robbery and shoplifting are almost becoming a daily norm for those in business, and how breakdown of the family can lead to youths going astray. Not covered in a preachy way but as credible background to an authentic feeling story, one that goes beyond scratching the surface. A key central thread is the conundrum that mobile phone videos provide, are they good or bad. In the past when faced with an accident, emergency or attack the natural instinct of the bystander was to rush and offer help, but now no longer. Now some people would get out their mobile phones and record the incident. Whilst in some cases this can provide vital evidence for the police, often it is just uploaded to social media without consideration of the wider consequences.

The plot is cleverly constructed; the reader is given the basic facts but the identity of the gang’s ‘controller’ and his motives well-hidden. The pace is brisk enough and builds up nicely to the satisfying finale, with just the right amount of danger. This is a book I was quickly engrossed in.

April and Skeeter are the central characters but hardly hog the limelight, this story is more of an ensemble piece, where basic leg work of the investigation is carried out by junior officers and feels more realistic because of it. We still get chance to discover that tough wrestler Skeeter is afraid of dentists which many will relate to. My favourite touch is Tom the ‘unseen’ neighbour, who is never fully described and talks to Skeeter from behind a hedge, usually whilst having a crafty cigarette.

The gang members are given some depth, such that we can see some are little more than kids, who having been drawn in by easy money, are eventually out of their depth. Others are darker and dangerous though, including one with an unusual, improvised weapon. The gang start with balaclavas but progress to hoods, once they are given some read fabric and one of them sews red faces to the front and back. An intimidating disguise, but also one with an ingenious comic book reference in another excellently thought-out piece of plot building. This is a story where the pieces come together beautifully.

“The Hidden Eye” is book four in the Merseyside crime series featuring Detective Inspector April Decent and Detective Sergeant Skeeter ‘Wicca’ Warlock. I was advised that I could read this book as a stand-alone and I agree, it’s easy to follow the main characters back stories, although as always, character progression is always enjoyed when the series is followed in order.

Set in Liverpool, this thrilling story of revenge and self guilt features timely and modern crimes involving the abhorrent rise in e-bike robberies. The cat and mouse chase to solve the cases and find ‘The Controller’ behind the gang, creates an intriguing storyline which keeps the reader guessing till the end.

The author brings the story to life with his superbly descriptive setting. I’ve never been to Liverpool but I feel like I know the place like my home city now. Hollingdrake likes to feature a certain area in each of his books and this time it’s the Pier Head, which lies close to his heart.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend “The Hidden Eye” to anyone who enjoys intelligent and suspenseful crime fiction and together with strong and unique characters, you’ll find it hard to put this book down!

The team are back with a case that I am sure is common in many areas with the increase of electric bikes and scooters that seem to make a nuisance of themselves at the best of times. On the streets of Liverpool, they are being used to aid stealing from unsuspecting victims. The opening chapter especially highlights how things can change in an instant and nothing is the same again.

The short chapters alternate between the team working on the cases as well as the gang who are performing the heinous crimes. It’s certainly hard to feel any empathy with any of the members of the gang, more so the one running it. Things are definitely not straight forward which makes it harder for them to all be caught.

The Hidden Eye is a very current read. Not just with crimes committed with the use of electric bikes but also how some people feel its more important to film what is happening with their phones rather than putting a stop to it or helping. It certainly makes you stop and think. The Liverpool setting is great and the author uses his vast knowledge in bringing the areas in the book to life. He kept me on tenterhooks throughout and delivers a quick paced and thrilling read. Another winning book in the series!

My thanks to the author for an early copy.

The Hidden Eye is the fourth book in The Merseyside Crime series but I think you can read and enjoy it as a standalone, however, you will definitely want to read the earlier books once you have read it.

DI April Decent is the main character who links the series together but the crime itself is a self-contained storyline and what an absolute belter it is. It had me riveted from start to finish as April and her team scour the streets of Liverpool in search of the mastermind behind the latest crime wave.

The city of Liverpool is brought to life and feels almost like a character itself. I have been to Liverpool, although I'm not familiar with a lot of the places mentioned in The Hidden Eye, but I could easily visualise it in my mind.

Filled with intrigue and packed with suspense, The Hidden Eye is an outstanding crime novel in a magnificent series. I love Malcolm Hollingdrake's descriptive writing; he creates such vivid scenes with such carefully considered words and it's a real joy to read his books. A highly recommended read.

I received a gifted paperback to read and review for the blog tour and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Book 4 in The Merseyside Crime Series and Detective Inspector April Decent and Detective Sergeant Skeeter ‘Wicca’ Warlock are back, along with the rest of the team, with a disturbing case to solve. I’m enjoying this series a lot and having visited many of the places mentioned I can really appreciate the descriptions of the places, clearly seeing them in my minds eye. This author has such a wonderful way with words.

Briefly, a gang of youths, are responsible for a number of thefts, and potentially murder. They arrive and leave on souped up electric bikes but behind them is an unknown man known as ‘the controller‘ and each mission he gives them is more difficult than the last. Andrew he is watching, always watching…

Love this team but my favourite character is Skeeter, she is so strong and determined and whilst she hides it well I see a softer side. The plot as always is excellent and those twists are so well hidden. Whatever else I read I always go back to police procedurals and this author is one of the best in this genre. Great read.

Whenever you hear of a new book being released by this author you know that you are in for a great reading experience, and you will not be disappointed with this book. Although it is the fourth book in the series it reads great as a standalone, although you will find a better experience if you read all of the series.
The author builds up great character progression but he also develops the location into an important characteristic of his writing through great research and knowledge of the areas involved. The story is very realistic and believable and will keep you engrossed from start t finish.
I would recommend this book to any crie fiction fans but also to anyone that enjoys a good story. I hope that we get to see more books published for this series in the future.
Many thanks to Hobeck Books, and the author, for providing me with an advanced electronic copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
The book will be published in e-book format on the 9th September, with the paperback format being released the following week

There is a growing spate of well planned, coordinated robberies using electric motorbikes in Liverpool. Then one goes wrong as a shop employee is stabbed during the raid. As a consequence, the investigation is handed to DI April Decent and her team. Lots of strands to follow and as they try to contact a witness who filmed the robbery, they find a dead body. Coincidence??? As the investigation progresses there seems to be a link to a handbag snatch that went tragically wrong a year earlier, another coincidence?

Really enjoyable read, with narrative from the police investigation and the thieves, including the shadowy figure controlling them. You’ll go down several blind alleys and rabbit holes, but it will be worth it!

Thanks to Hobeck Books for an ARC for my honest review.

The Hidden Eye, the 4th book in the gripping Liverpool Crime series, is a hard hitting and currently topical. Anti social behaviour involving E-scooters are used for several robberies, but who is pulling the strings. The investigation team include some great and now familiar faces. Skeeter Warlock and Tony Price stand out for me, but rest of investigation team just as important. Once again, as usual , the writing is superb, flowing and descriptive which gave me a sense of actually being there amongst it all . A fast paced gripping read . I had my suspicions as to who was behind the crimes, but obviously I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed The Hidden Eye and highly recommend this book for fans of crime fiction. Hope to read more in this series.

The Hidden Eye is fourth novel in the Merseyside crime series with DI April Decent, DS Skeeter Warlock, and DC Michael Peet are part of a team tasked with investigating a recent spate of gang related anti social crimes involving scooters. There is one particular victim that haunts the team and it is the death of a young woman a year earlier that could be linked to current events. Can April and her team track down the suspects and the so called Controller? Will they bring them to justice? It was full of twists and turns, gripping, gritty, with a few nail biting moments! All the sub plots came together with an unexpected conclusion.

Malcolm Hollingdrake’s book, ‘The Hidden Eye’ makes for swift and interesting reading.
Gangs seem to be whizzing around town, snatching, stealing, burgling - all in broad daylight, and crowded places. But then, one day, the burglary goes wrong, and someone is stabbed. The police begin their search which takes them through the ‘Red Hood’ story. An avenging killer.

It was enjoyable, and I read it at one go.

It was so lovely to be back with Wicca and the rest of the gang. Feels like ages since we last joined them in Liverpool.
This features a gang of bikers that go around robbing innocent people until one fights back and falls under the wheels of a lorry.
Its soon revealed there is a lot more to this gang than meets the eye.
I love how Malcolm has talked about 2 very relevant and timely frustrations. Those bikes that whizz around silently, and the fact people all too often just stop to film instead of helping.
I loved the mystery of an invisible commander directing operations and a clue from an unusual source.
The Dragon's Eye sounds awesome and I hope its real because id love to see it. One of this authors strengths is his description of place. I love being immersed in the city of Liverpool and feeling like im travelling the same streets as I read. It makes me keen to visit the city.
The final third of this book was tense and I had to remind myself to breathe once or twice. I loved the way everything unfolded and the layers peeled back as I would expect from a meticulous author like Malcolm.
I couldn't put this down once I started and enjoyed every second. An author who is at the top of their game creating something special and unique time after time.

Once again it was great to be back with April and her team and this time she’s plagued with a gang of sinister electric bike riders causing havoc on the streets of Liverpool.

However, this is not just kids making pests of themselves (they are everywhere including where I live) there is someone behind the gang pulling their strings. This person is known as “The Controller” but no one knows who it is.

April and her team are given the task of finding The Controller and the gang to make the streets of Liverpool safe once again.

What follows is like a game of cat and mouse, with April and her team not knowing who it is. Will they be able to find the puppet master before all hell breaks out?

I have to say, I loved the descriptive writing of Liverpool and all the landmarks and the history behind it. Malcolm has written another excellent book and makes the reader feel at home with the area. Although ive been to Liverpool, I didn’t know half the things about the city.

This is the fourth book in the series but can be read as a stand alone.

My thanks to Malcolm and Hobeck Books for the ARC.

A gang of youths are terrorising the streets of Liverpool on electric motorbikes.

DI April Richmond, DI Skeeter Warlock, and the team must find out who these youths are, as well as revealing who “The Controller” is.

As the gang have seemingly turned to murder, the streets need to be cleared of these killers, urgently.

I must start by saying how happy I am that the team are back with us again. This is a great police procedural series, that draws me in every time.

The police characters are well-developed, the author brings all of them to life. I love their humour, which is much needed in a dark story.

As the author weaved his web of words, I was left wanting more after each chapter. The descriptive writing means that you don’t have to know the area to be able to visualise it.

Although this is book 4 in the series, it can be read as a standalone.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
