I hired a single mom to help make my small town fall in love with a baseball team. And now I’m the one falling in love…with her.

Buying a small town baseball team might seem an odd choice for a millionaire tech developer, but I welcome the challenge.

Moving back to my hometown and reviving the once-beloved Cedar Creek Thunder is an impulsive attempt to find a deeper purpose, and a life that is measured in happiness rather than dollars.

A chance encounter with the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen has my temperature rising from more than the tea she’s spilled on me. When she walks into my office for an interview later that morning, it quickly becomes clear there’s no one better suited for the job .

Isla Forrester should be off limits, but with a smile that pierces my soul, the single mom is fire wrapped up in sweet temptation.

I’ve always had thick walls around my heart, but Isla and her son are breaking them down.

Now my sole purpose is getting her to believe that loving her is no challenge at all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE GAME CHANGER — Julia Jarrett (Audiobook) 🎧⚾️

Thank you Julia Jarrett for the ALC ❤️

I hit play and suddenly my entire personality became small-town baseball romance.

This audiobook?? ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE

Single mom + billionaire baseball boss + forced proximity + slow burn tension that should be illegal = me pacing my house like I was personally involved in the outcome. The chemistry builds so naturally that by the time it hits, I was screaming into the laundry I was folding like the team just won the championship.

The narration was TOP-TIER. Like, “I forgot I was listening to an audiobook and thought I was spying on fictional people’s lives” level good. Every emotion landed, the longing, the humor, the quiet moments, the spice 👀 All of it enhanced by voices that understood the assignment.

The romance is swoony without being cheesy, spicy without overpowering the story, and emotionally satisfying in a way that makes you sit there afterward like: wow… okay… I need a moment. The found family vibes, the small-town charm, the baseball backdrop? Perfection.

This book didn’t just change the game it rewired my brain chemistry.

🎧 If you’re an audiobook lover: RUN.
⚾️ If you love sports romance: RUN FASTER.
💖 If you want heart, heat: congratulations, this is your next 5-star read.

you know when a book feels like it talks to your soul? this book was that for me.

reading this felt like meeting and getting to know these people in real life, they felt so real, tangible, and relatable—and that for me is a hallmark of a great story.

this felt like a breath of fresh air when it comes to reading a sports romance, it’s not your typical sports romance trope, BUT you will get everything you love about a sports romance and more—but what got me was the emotional depth the story holds.

i was emotionally all over the place while reading this book. one moment i was kicking my feet giddy and the next i was crying. i love the way ABS (amniotic band syndrome) was tackled and represented in this book—with so much love and care.

if there is one thing that i’m taking away from this book is that representation matters. i love the way Julia represented not only ABS, but also on how a woman can be successful in any point in her life. she represented different kinda of family dynamics but all are rooted in love.

thank you so much for the opportunity to read this as an arc. can’t wait for the rest of the world to read Luca and Isla’s story💙

This book was the only thing that got me through two days of being sick in bed.

Luca and Isla had such a refreshing relationship. I absolutely adored how much Luca doted on Charlie, and how well they bonded. Luca and Isla are relationship goals, and they had quite a few moments that had me kicking my feet or bursting out laughing.

This story was motivating and informative in the best way. I think Julia did a great job speaking about the topics she chose. It’s always great to see disability inclusivity in romance books.

Great small town romance with a boss & single mom!

Thank you to Julia for the ARC💜

Thanks to Julia Jarrett for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.

Love, Drama & High Stakes

Sometimes tension does not come from epic battles or shocking crimes but from small, pressing moments where everything is at stake. ‘The Game Changer’ is a perfect example of a story where the pressure of competition, personal expectations, and desire come together seamlessly.

Julia Jarrett builds suspense primarily through the dynamic between her characters. Every look and every word seems loaded with meaning and unspoken longing. It keeps the reader on edge, wondering what will happen next and which decision will set off a domino effect.

There is also the tension of the goal at stake. The team, the game, the chances of winning everything hangs by a thread. Jarrett shows how obstacles and unexpected twists make the game thrilling while also putting the inner lives of the characters under pressure.

Then there is the emotional investment. Winning on the field or in love feels urgent and all-defining. This combination of physical challenges and emotional uncertainty keeps the reader hooked as Jarrett unfolds her story with fluidity and attention to detail.

This is a book that shows tension often arises between the lines, in choices, and in the characters’ feelings. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys stories where you play along both on the field and in the heart.

Small-town sports team | Second-chance romance | Workplace tension | Slow-burn chemistry | High-stakes competition | Personal growth | Emotional dilemmas | Unspoken desire | Triumphs and setbacks | Heart-fluttering moments

Hit it out of the park

Such a perfect combo for a small town romance.... spice, disability rep, a swoony mmc and a strong single fmc with a kiddo (and mention of the town from a previous series 🥰).

🎧📚ARC & ALC REVIEW📚🎧

I had the opportunity to both read an ARC and listen to an ALC of The Game Changer and because it is a first in a series, I read it first, then gave myself a pause and then listened. The beginning of a series sometimes throws a lot of information at you as far as side characters and this way I was able to highlight what I might need to know for the future, etc etc etc. Okay, well, enough about my reading OCD. LOL

Let’s talk about this story! I was “in it” from the beginning. I love the way that Julia set-up everything, from the meet-cute to everything that comes after. I had a sense of joviality from the moment I started reading. I was excited to see how the story would unfold and all the circumstances would evolve. The way Julia mirrored “real-life” in this story was top-notch. Honestly, there was never a point in this story where I felt like it was fictional. These were real people with real circumstances taking life by the ba11s and soaring! She did not miss a single detail, and she also didn’t throw in dramatics. Listen, this story had enough none-typical circumstances to navigate and adding “thrown-in” conflict would have come across as forced and just dumb and I love that Julia knew that. She told a story of three people coming together “to get through this thing called life” and it was poignant and sweet, sexy and thrilling, captivating and swoony! The small-town, family and friends vibe was strong and I’m just ridiculously happy about this story!

The duet performance by Connor Crais & Heather Firth “raised the roof” on this story! I couldn’t believe how lost I became inside this story while I listened to it. It’s not a long or short listen; it’s about average but I was lost in it! GAH, I love it when that happens! Huge 👏👏round of applause👏👏 to both narrators and of course Julia for writing this beautiful story!

Let me preface this by saying I’m writing this review RIGHT after finishing the book because I’m vibrating with excitement and a bit manic.

This book was beyond what I could have imagined. Let me lay it out for you for past me reading it in live time: Started off strong! An adorable meet cute mishap. The intro to the sexy MMC. Then introduced to Islas son who has a limb difference. Wait and then the MMC has a limb difference too! Omg love the representation!!!

This book brings together many important topics: limb difference not only with the main character but also a side character, teen pregnancy, single parenthood, and people pleasing perfectionism.

All of these characters are not perfect, they make mistakes just like us. I love the way that Islas characters internal monologue is so accurate to feelings many people have felt about being enough for others, showing your more than your past, and having grit and determination to succeed on your own terms. Then Luca comes into the scene has this perfect seeming man who has done amazing things. But as the book progresses the layers start falling and those true characteristics that are so easily understood. He is a provider (he want everyone to have what they need, even the little things) my acts of service love language was absolutely giddy for this man, he is has his own internal battle when it comes to his own limb difference, and struggles with accepting praise and acknowledgment for all the things he does.

This book was relatable, had those leg kicking giddiness moments, meaningful/deep conversations, and a sexy ass MMC who knew what he was saying and doing. I CANNOT wait for the next one!!!!

What a delightful new baseball series from Julia Jarrett! With wonderful characters (especially Luca, Isla and her son, Charlie), set in the fictional small town of Westport on Vancouver Island, it’s is both heartwarming and poignant!

Luca Calloway is a millionaire tech developer who has bought his hometown’s baseball team and its dilapidated stadium in the hopes of rekindling the community’s interest and support of their team. He’s not just a “tech nerd” throwing money around though…he truly is invested in making this happen.

To that end, he hires Isla Forrester as his temporary marketing consultant (who, unbeknownst to him, he first meets in a cute mishap at a coffee shop) to generate excitement about the team and its soon-to-be completed refurbished stadium. Isla and her son, Charlie, have recently moved to Westport to be closer to her mother who lives in nearby Dogwood Cove (which is the setting of a wonderful series as well!) and friend, Juniper. Isla is pleased and relieved to be hired by the charming man she (literally) bumped into while getting her morning tea!

Sparks fly between Isla and Luca from the beginning but Isla wants to keep a professional distance…her job is only temporary and she wants to stay in Westport once her contract is up and finding another marketing job in a smaller community will be challenging enough.

Luca is beyond charming. Whether it’s his sincerity in supporting his team - providing new gear, uniforms, refurbishing their stadium - or involving the community to bring back the excitement of having a great hometown team, he’s 100% committed.

His interactions with Isla’s twelve year old son, Charlie, really shows the depth of his caring spirit. Yes, of course there’s romance between Luca and Isla, but the commonality that he and Charlie share is very touching (and I really commend Ms. Jarrett for shedding light on this…being vague to avoid spoilers!). His support and acceptance goes a long way with Charlie.

The supporting characters from Juniper, Isla’s mom, Luca’s best friend, Dom, to the baseball players we meet, all add to the story and draws the reader in!

This is a wonderful, enjoyable book and I’m really looking forward to the subsequent stories in this series!

Julia Jarrett honestly just never disappoints and this first book in her new Cedar Creek Thunder baseball series features single mom, Isla and Luca, her new boss and the owner of the team.

Set in small town, Vancouver Island, sparks fly between Luca and Isla from their very first meeting but each is determined to keep things professional. Isla doesn’t want to lose her job and Luca doesn’t want to abuse his authority over Isla.

Both are also very insecure and nervous about entering a new relationship. Isla because she doesn’t want to be judged for becoming a single mom at 16 and Luca because of his limb difference.

But when they meet at a conference for amniotic band syndrome survivors (ABS), they can’t help bonding and deepening their relationship even more. Especially after Luca befriends Isla’s son and helps him learn to use prosthetics to play baseball.

I could go on and on about how much I loved this book but I’ll just say its full of vulnerable, relatable characters you can’t help cheering for, has excellent disability rep and was amazing on audio with duet narration by Connor Crais and Heather Firth.

Highly recommended for fans of authors like Hannah Bonam-Young, Brighton Walsh, Stephanie Archer or Helena Hunting. HUGE thanks to the author for sharing an ALC with me in exchange for my honest review, all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed reading The Game Changer. The FMC knew what she wanted and went for it! She was protective of her son. This is a sweet love story which has instant attraction, small age gap, single mom, surprise medical coincidence and ohhhh the spice!

It's been Isla and Charlie for so long. Will she find a way to make room for Luca?

Favorite Quote…..

“Just for tonight, I want to feel like Isla Forrester, a woman who is more than a mom, or an employee, or a marketing expert. I want to feel like someone who is beautiful and deserving of his flirting and charm.”

This is what any mom wearing multiple hats wants to feel every now and again!

Luca, Isla and Charlie's story was good. It's about letting your walls down and trusting. It showed disabilities don't prevent you from doing things other people do. The chemistry was good and it was well written.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ .25 almost perfect!

luca returns to his hometown after buying a struggling baseball team, hoping to find purpose beyond his success as a tech developer. when he hires isla forrester, a single mom with the perfect vision to help revive the cedar creek thunder, she quickly becomes more than just an employee. drawn to her warmth and the bond she shares with her son, luca finds his carefully built walls starting to crumble. as their connection deepens, he becomes determined to prove that loving her is the one challenge he’s more than ready to take on.

this one truly hit it out of the park for me. there is nothing a love more than a julia book and the single mum fmc paired with a down bad mmc swoony mmc. julia just knows how to be thoughtful in the way that she writes and i disability rep was done very well. this was such a fresh take on a sports romance while still delivering me a story that is rooted in reality. the way luca’s relationship with charlie developed and how he just showed up for isla in all the big quiet was is what I love about romance. this whole book just made me melt and i fell in love with romance again.

the audiobook was incredible and completely elevated the story for me. the duet narration brought out every bit of longing, humour and emotion.

thank you julia for the early alc and arc!

tropes: single mum, billionaire, forced proximity, workplace, sports romance (baseball), age gap, limb difference

Another adorable baseball romance from the sports romance Queen @juliajarrettauthor

Luca and Isla have a bit of a moment only for her to be the person she’s hiring on to help his baseball team with their marketing.

Isla is a single mom and needs this job so obviously she tries to fight her attraction to her new boss but when it’s right, it’s so right 😏 I really did love the “we shouldn’t but we want to” of it it all and the slow burn tension was chefs kiss.

Her son Charlie is adorable and just loves baseball. He has a limb difference and Luca is so sweet with him and it’s something they can bond over. I for sure teared up at this little angel figuring out his love for playing baseball and this big billionaire helping him do it 🥹

Forever thank you to @juliajarrettauthor for the chance to listen to this ALC cuz it’s another bangerrr girl. The audiobook was top tier and you always know how to leave me desperately wanting the next book! Sign me the f upppp for T CB babbyyyy

There were like a handful of decent things in this book but Isla, was one of the most annoyingly irritating FMCs I’ve ever read.

Audio narration was great though.

Rose and Thorn about reading this book:(IYKYK!)
Rose - feeling all the feels for my new book boyfriend Luca
Thorne - that the book had to end!

The Game Changer is book 1 of The Cedar Creek Thunder, a new series by the lovely Julia Jarrett, and she hit it out of the park!
There was crossover/connections with characters from both the Dogwood Cove and Vancouver Tridents series, but can be read without starting either series first.

I was absolutely in love with Luca and Isla from the very beginning!
Their meet cute moment had me snickering and I felt all the feels from there!
Who doesn't drool over a MMC completely obsessed with his girl, but is a complete gentleman about it... but is a little less gentlemanly behind closed doors, or in hot tubs for that matter. IYKYK!

What I absolutely loved about this book was when there were problems or drama, it did not take half the book to solve. That's right, the FMC and MMC actually talk about their feelings!!! However, I often wanted to shake Isla for her stubborn drive for independence. I understood where she was coming from, but often wanted to yell "JUST LET THAT MAN LOVE YOU!"
Ok, Luca needed to stop 'surprising' someone who doesn't like surprises 🙄
But maybe there is no such thing as a perfect obsessed golden retriever millionaire.

Julia does an amazing job with the MMC Luca & Charlie's disability representation. Not only did she do the research to make sure it was properly presented physically, but the rollercoaster of emotions were written beautifully.

A huge shout out to Julia's inclusion of the organization Let's Play!! It a very real non profit that strives to provide inclusive accessibility in sports for children living with a mobility related physical disability. It is a wonderful organization and I absolutely loved seeing this represented in the book!!

Well done Julia, this was the perfect start to a new series!

Isla and Luca’s story begins with a chance encounter when Isla accidentally spills her tea on him. Not long after, she walks in for a job interview, only to discover that Luca is her potential boss. Already intrigued by her from their first meeting, he quickly realizes she’s the perfect fit and hires her.

Their connection is immediate, but they both try to stay professional which proves nearly impossible. Luca is guarded and sometimes closed off, yet Isla and her son slowly break through his defenses. He's the perfect fit for their little family.

Heather Firth and Connor Crais were absolutely perfect as Isla and Luca. Their narration brought the characters, their chemistry, and their emotional journey to life beautifully. If you’re looking for a sweet, heartwarming story, this is a must listen.

Thank you, Julia Jarrett for the ALC.

I was thrilled to be selected for an ARC of The Game Changer. If you love small-town romance with a swoony sports vibe, this is definitely one to pick up. This is the first book by Julia Jarrett that I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be my last.
The story begins when Isla literally bumps into Luca at a café, spilling tea all over him on her way to a job interview. Luca is instantly head over heels after that first meeting—only to discover that Isla is the marketing consultant he’s been searching for. I absolutely loved how supportive Luca is, not only toward Isla but also toward her son, Charlie. Their dynamic was heartwarming and genuine.
The characters may not be what you initially imagine—both have limb differences—but Julia Jarrett delivers their story beautifully and with so much care. You’ll still fall hard for Luca (great butt included 😏). The chemistry between Isla and Luca is completely off the charts.

You know the book you start and think, “I’ll just read or listen to a few chapters a day,” and eight-and-a-half hours later your pop your earbuds out and wonder what you missed, because the world just disappeared? The Game Changer by author Julia Jarrett and narrated by Connor Crais and Heather Firth is that book. I absolutely disappeared into the book; I was in Cedar Creek.

The Game Changer is the first book in Jarrett’s new The Cedar Creek Thunder baseball series. It perfectly sets the stage for what I hope will be many books to follow. Luca and Isla and the supporting cast are irresistible, Cedar Creek is charming, and the underlying story of congenital limb difference and amniotic band syndrome is sensitively told, informative and educational, often heart-breaking but also just as uplifting.

The first chapter is hilarious and will hook you: single mom Isla, whose last up-close-and-personal encounter was about twelve years ago when she became pregnant with her son Charlie. She’s not unaware of handsome, sexy men but she felt harshly judged as a pregnant teenager and doesn’t want to open herself up to any possible judgment ever again. Besides, Charlies needs her. We’re a bit into the story when we realize Charlie has congenital limb difference; his right arm never developed below the elbow. They’ve adapted but he has been bullied. Isla is hoping for a fresh start for both of them if she gets the job as temporary marketing director for the newly-revived Cedar Creek Thunder small town baseball team.

Remember I said although Isla is a bit (ahem) inexperienced but still notices handsome, sexy men? Enter one such man who she unfortunately spills hot tea on. And who, even more unfortunately, is the new owner of Cedar Creek Thunder and the man interviewing her for that marketing job,

Luca is a millionaire tech developer who just sold his company and has moved back home with a plan to return the Thunder to its previous glory as an integral part of the Cedar Creek community. He’s re-forming the team and refurbishing the stadium and Isla’s vision for the team aligns perfectly with his, which makes her the perfect candidate for the position. He fervently hopes an inner mantra of, “She’s not that beautiful, she’s not that beautiful, she’s not smart and creative and funny and no I do not have ‘those’ thoughts about her,” will allow him to remain professional. Cue the humor because we know how this is going to go.

Luca also has congenital limb difference; his leg never developed below the knee, but he’s not as open about it as Charlie. He’s had some bad experience and doesn’t want to be judged or receive special treatment or be identified by it so very people know. As for relationships, he’s cautious. Very cautious. Some women have been more or less okay with it; others have almost run out of the room screaming. Not exactly confidence-inspiring.

So two talented, attractive people with a lot to offer who think romance, not to mention true love, is just not in the cards. Isla is going to wait until Charlie is grown up – or maybe forever – to even think about it, and Luca wants what his parents have but doesn’t think that’s possible. That instant attraction in the coffee shop, however, is turning into something more, even though there are so many reasons they can’t be together: Isla has to put Charlie first; there is an age gap between them; she works for him. Fighting is futile, though, so sit back and enjoy.

Connor Crais and Heather Firth bring The Game Changer vividly to life through their flawless, excellent duet narration. Crais puts so much emotion – love, desire, yearning, fear, desperation, sadness hidden under his calm, mature demeaner – into his deep, warm, rumbly portrayal of Luca that you will be captivated, and he then transitions effortlessly into 12-year-old Charlie, cracking voice and surly pre-teen replies and all. Firth’s portrayal of Isla is soft and a little breathy, making her seem vulnerable, but then Firth puts enough steel in her voice to show us just how strong Isla really is, and Firth’s voices for the other female characters are remarkable varied. The audio version of this book makes an engaging, captivating story even more appealing and satisfying.

The Game Changer is a great start to this new series, introducing the characters and the town of Cedar Creek, weaving a likely mostly unknown physical condition seamlessly into the story and setting up possibilities for further books. Bonus: references to and appearances by Vancouver Tridents folks we already love. I knew I would enjoy this story because of my past reading/listening experience with Jarrett’s work, but I was very pleasantly surprised at how quickly it drew me in and enfolded me in its warmth, love and spice. I received advance reading and listening copies of The Game Changer. Definitely recommend and can’t wait for the next book. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

Isla and Luca first meet in a classic coffeeshop moment, but when it turns out that Isla is interviewing for the marketing position at the new minor league baseball team Luca just acquired, their meet cute becomes much more. After the interview, Luca instantly knows that Isla is perfect for the position, but has to try and reconcile his instant attraction to her. The chemistry between Isla and Luca is palpable as they work together to bring the team back to life and get people in the stands and the more they get to know each other, the more Luca is fighting his attraction to her and vice versa.
Isla is a single mom with a son who was born with a limb difference and navigating their lives has been a challenge in lots of ways. As Isla relocates with her son to start her new position, she is hoping that the fresh start will be good for both of them in their new town and be accepting of her son. When Luca discovers her son's condition, he is blown away because he happens to have the same condition with his leg. Tired of the need to explain and stares from strangers, Luca makes it a point to hide his condition from the public, but even when he hears about Charlie, he still keeps his condition to himself. When he eventually meets Charlie and sees that he doesn't hide his difference or wear a prosthesis, he is in awe and inspired by his outlook on life as a young boy.
As he spends time with Isla and even gets to know Charlie, Luca wants to confess about his condition so that he can be start his pursuit of a relationship with Isla with honesty. When everything comes out, it only brings Luca and Isla closer and their attraction for one another can't be avoided and they choose to date each other in secret. It also brings Luca and Charlie closer as its a shared experience that only they two can truly understand. When Charlie decides he wants to try a prosthetic in hopes of playing little league, Luca is there to support them both.
As much as Isla has apprehension about pursuing a relationship, especially with her boss, and allowing a man into Charlie's life, Luca quells those worries time and again. He is so enamored with them both and it makes their story so special the way he moves mountains to make sure they can be together no matter what. I am excited for the rest of this series!
Connor and Heather were phenomenal on this title. A true romance story, they brought all the facets of these characters to life and showcased their talents beautifully. Another fantastic performance.

“What’s your rose and thorn from tonight?” I whisper, staring up at him. He smiles, his thumb stroking my cheek softly.
“That’s easy. Rose is dancing with you. Thorn is the fact that the night is over. You?”
I don’t think about it. I just speak the truth. “My rose was also dancing. But my thorn is the fact that you haven’t kissed me yet.”

I absolutely loved Luca & Isla’s story. Their connection is so sweet and you can tell that they just truly care about each other. Their meet cute, the secret meetings, the way they just want to be together but can’t- I ate it all up. It totally made sense for all of Isla’s friends and family to push her to open herself up & for all of Luca’s friends and co-workers to question what he was doing. It’s hard to mix business & personal affairs, but when the heart knows, it knows. And I’m happy that Luca’s friends were able to see that & give him their full support in the end.

I really appreciated how Isla wasn’t upset that Luca didn’t disclose to her that he was also missing a limb like her son Charlie. Having a son who others have looked at differently gave her a different perspective on the situation & I think that put Luca at ease & gave him a little more of a push to open himself up. It made me sad that he thought that Isla would love him less because of his ABS and that people have thought less of him in the past because of it. I really appreciated his growth in & around this part of himself, because though he’s had his limb difference since birth, it’s not as easy as accepting that part of yourself right away. Sometimes it takes the right person to bring that out in you.

Also, can I just take a second to talk about the casting for the audiobook? Connor & Heather are literally perfect for this role & I loved getting to hear them transform these characters for 12 glorious hours! Thank you so much Julia for the ALC 💜

If you love books with boss x employee, disability rep, single parent, and that sometimes opening yourself up to love can be the best thing for you, you’ll love Isla & Luca’s story & can find it everywhere Feb 10th!

This is book one in The Cedar Creek Thunder series and it is Luca and Isla’s story and omg what a brilliant start to a new series and definitely a must read. Isla is on her way to Cedar Creek for a job interview and she needs to impress the new owner and if she gets the job she can then move to Cedar Creek along with her 12 year old son Charlie and hopefully make it there home because being a single mom brings it’s own busy schedule but definitely worth it so now she needs to prove that she is the best branding and marketing consultant that they ever had. Luca is the new owner of the Cedar Creek Thunder Baseball Team and he is trying to build it up and make it better than ever but he needs a branding and marketing consultant and when he meets Isla the attraction is instant and even though he offers her the job he hopes that he is not making a big mistake. The more time that Luca and Isla spend together the stronger their attraction and chemistry grows and becomes more intense and when they eventually give in to how they feel they are totally explosive and sparks fly all around them but with them working together it has it’s own problems but will they eventually get a future together or is it just a flash in the pan. I absolutely loved this book and how Isla, Luca and Charlie reacted with each other especially with everything that they have all been through and also how Luca is so patient and spend a lot of quality time with Charlie especially as they have the same issues which I will not go into because it could be a spoiler but this book was written with so much care and compassion on a very difficult subject. I read this book in one sitting until the early hours of the morning because I just couldn’t put it down as it was so addictive and kept my attention throughout and was so emotional in places. I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series and it is definitely worth reading and you will not be disappointed.

4.5 ⭐ This is my first time reading Julia Jarrett, and I am so in love with her writing, I’m planning to go through her library and add them to my TBR! If you’re not familiar, she’s a Canadian author and this story is based in British Columbia. I love that she’s not shy about using the Canadian spelling for certain words that are spelled differently in US American dictionaries. Eg favour versus favor.

Aside from that, I thought this story had grit. I love how delicately she treated Isla/Luca’s and Luca/Charlie’s relationship surrounding ABS. It’s a sensitive topic for sure, and I felt that it was done respectfully. Isla and Luca are so easy to love, I wanted to hug them throughout this story.

At the heart of the story, is a single mother who struggled through being a teenage mom, and whose sole focus for the last 12 yrs has been her son. When Isla meets Luca, sparks fly and she finds herself wondering if she’s been missing out on companionship. The problem is, she just started her dream job. And Luca is her new boss.

Both characters are still working through past traumas which include being subjected to high school bullying. Despite becoming very successful adults, the damage left from years of bullying are hard to overcome. It hurts to be looked down on for something you can’t control. I really wanted to give them hugs about this!

I also listened to the audiobook of this story and I fell even further in love with this book! Conner Crais is one of my favourite narrators and he did not disappoint me. The way he emotes pain, regret, slow burn and sexual tension, gets me every time. Heather Firth is new to me, and I thought she did a fantastic job as well. Isla’s indecisiveness and feelings really came through.

Thank you Julia Jarrett for this ARC and ALC. The above is my own and personal opinion.

What a refreshingly beautiful and deeply moving story. Julia has well and truly touched my heart and soul with this tender, emotionally rich romance between Luca and Isla. From the very beginning, this book stands out for its thoughtful and inclusive representation. Having a main MMC with a limb difference, alongside an FMC whose son shares a similar experience, added such depth and authenticity to the story. It never felt like a device—rather, it was woven seamlessly into the characters’ lives.
The bond that forms between Luca and young Charlie is absolutely gorgeous. Watching them connect through shared experiences, understanding, and quiet strength was incredibly touching and easily one of my favourite aspects of the book. Those moments were filled with warmth, sincerity, and so much heart.
The attraction between Luca and Isla is undeniable from the start, but when Isla takes a job working for Luca, they both make a genuine effort to remain professional. Of course, resisting that pull proves far harder than expected. Their slow burn tension is delicious, and when they end up attending the same conference together, all that carefully maintained distance crumbles. From there, the sparks truly fly.
Their chemistry is off the charts—intense, magnetic, and impossible to ignore. The banter is sharp, the emotional connection is strong, and the intimate moments are sizzling enough to have your toes curling. It’s passionate without losing its emotional core, which makes it even more compelling.
This is a truly fantastic start to a new series by Julia. If the remaining books are even half as good as this one, readers are in for something special. I have no doubt you’ll be completely enraptured by these characters and eager to follow their journeys throughout the rest of the series. 💕✨

"The Game Changer"
(The Cedar Creek Thunder # 1)

by Julia Jarrett

This is a beautiful story about differences, the way we see them and how we persevere through them.

Isla is a young, dedicated and loving mother of 12 yo Charlie, who has a disability: he is missing part of one arm. And when they move to another town in Canada, her new job has this older, charming, baseball team owner who happens to also have the same disability in his leg.

They fell for each other and become a family full of love, of tenderness, of abilities.

This book has this touching disability rep, who will stay in my heart.

Thank you to the author for this ARC.

-----

some of my favorite quotes:

This man is beyond gorgeous and has all the long-forgotten parts of me sitting up and taking notice.

(...) the second we make contact, it's as if my entire body comes alive from a deep sleep.

No inappropriate thoughts about the obviously older, very handsome man who is my potential future boss. Bad Isla, bad.

What's also weird is how this one woman has me feeling like a nervous teenager with his first crush.

My heart pounds. Her son has the same disability as me? My thoughts spiral even faster.

I glance up and see his stormy-grey eyes focused on me. His stare is intense. He looks away the second our gaze meets, but I flush, nonetheless.

"But I can't just stop being attracted to her. I can't turn it off like a fucking light switch. She's beautiful, and funny, and smart. And so damn off-limits."

"I listen to you. Every damn word you say, wonder woman."

My arms thread around his neck as I give in to what could be the greatest mistake of my life.
Or the greatest kiss of my life.
Or both.

"Your abilities are stronger than your disability."

She's the first rain after a draught. The first rays of sunshine bringing light to the day.

Where are all my baseball and romance lovers at? There’s a new series in town! The Game Changer is the first in Julia Jarrett’s new Cedar Creek Thunder series, which focuses on a baseball team in a small (ish) town in British Columbia. Like all of Jarrett’s novels, I was all in on this one while I was reading it and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

The book's description is all from Luca’s point of view but the book alternates between him and Isla, so you can see how both of them are feeling as their relationship progresses. I liked getting into both of their heads and it definitely helped me enjoy the book more than I would have if it had just been a single POV.

There aren’t nearly enough baseball romances out there, which is part of why I wanted to read The Game Changer. (That and Jarrett’s books always give me the warm fuzzies.) Given neither main character is a player and it took place in the lead up to the start of the season, the baseball aspect is limited. The vibes were there, though. The town is behind the team and you can tell the players were excited about the new owner and the new season. It made me want to buy tickets to a Thunder game!

There’s some good representation in this book. Both Luca and Charlie, Isla’s son, have amniotic band syndrome (ABS), which, for them, resulted in limb differences. Jarrett made sure to have sensitivity readers, which she shouts out in her acknowledgments. I had never heard of ABS, specifically, so I appreciated the insight on what it could be like to live with it. And seeing the two of them bond? Adorable.

This novel had a few tropes that aren’t always my favourite so I needed to work a little harder to overcome them, though Jarrett makes it easy because she always writes such satisfying romances. Isla is a single parent, there’s an age gap (he’s older by 13 years), and he’s her boss. Everything’s really respectful but they’re tropes to keep in mind when you’re reading.

Jarrett’s characters are never perfect but they’re perfect for romance heroes and heroines. They’re always so relatable (even when they’re stupid rich, a single parent, or an athlete) and I always root for them to have the most magical Happily Ever After. You can’t help it because you’ve fallen in love with them along the way and want all the very best for them. It makes Jarrett’s books so damn satisfying.

We don’t have any details on the second book in the Cedar Creek Thunder series but based solely on The Game Changer? I’ll definitely be reading the next in Julia Jarrett’s small town baseball series. Her romance novels always bring a smile to my face and I hope more people check this one out!

✨ Romance Comfort-Read Alert ✨

This review comes from a reader who loves:
🛑 No cheating / no OW-OM drama
💞 Low angst (together > apart)
🚫💔 No third-act breakup — I’m tired and I want them happy
👑 Strong FMC
💪 Take-charge MMC
🔥 Reformed playboy > current manwhore, but never manwhore is preferred
💬 Miscommunication allowed if resolved like adults
🏡 HEA ALWAYS

I read for joy, vibes, and emotional safety. If you’re here for chaos and pain… we might not be reading the same book 😌📚 I also tend not to rework the summary into reviews because chances are you’ve already read it to get to the book review part of the show.

Oh, Luca. The man you are. We love an emotionally intelligent king around here. His story was done really well. I have never read a book with MCs that have limb differences, let alone a MMC with one. I felt like Julia captured the internal struggles with acceptance really well. She also brought to light the vulnerability a man would feel regarding such a difference and how that impacts romantic relationships.

I love how Isla was so accepting. Now, I understand a large part of that was because of her son's limb difference, but I really appreciated the comfort she brought to Luca. She was a great mom, independent, smart, and a bad ass. She got on my nerves a little when it came to her independence and not wanting to work for Luca and date him, but I understand. I do wish she would have let him explain before she jumped into hot pissed mode.

I'm looking forward to more books in this series. It is safe, sort of fluffy, but so damn good. If Connor Crais is narrorating anymore I'll buy them all LOL.

4.5 rounded up

Isla is starting fresh in a new small town, closer to her mother and best friend. She's on a short-term contract with the local sports team, but is focused on making it permanent for her and her son. She isn't expecting sparts to fly with her new boss, nor for them to have so much in common. The only problem is that she can't work for the man she loves, and he isn't willing to give her up.

*****

I absolutely LOVED this novel. I went in without really knowing anything other than a brief skim of the blurb and I was immediately hooked. I also apparently skimmed over the cover because I completely missed that the MMC had a limb difference until it was pointed out later in the story! It make the discovery so fantastic, especially as Charlie also was born missing a limb, and they're able to bond over their shared experiences, as well as their differences.

Overall, this was a book full of heart. Isla is a dedicated mother and friend, who's willing to do what's right even if it's hard. Luca is a jaded man that comes to life in Isla's presence, and gains the love and family he had never dreamed he could have. This had me feeling warm and cozy the whole way through, especially as they tried to find their footing, learn how to communicate in healthy ways, and show up for each other above all else. I also quietly loved that this one is based in British Columbia, as I was able to read this and picture cities and places I know well.

If you're looking for a swoony millionaire MMC who is willing to do anything to support the woman he loves and her son, this one is for you!

Isla, a single mom raising a son with a disability, makes a life altering decision to move to a small town, seeking a better life for her little family, and to be closer to her own mother and friends. All she wants is stability and happiness for her son, but sometimes life takes a surprising turn, giving her more than she anticipated when she gambled on the change of scenery.

Luca, her new millionaire boss, who bought a struggling baseball team to fill up his days and find purpose, is enamoured from the beginning. But due to his own past, is hesitant to open up to her. The part he never saw coming? Isla's son and Luca have more in common than they realize.

This novel was an amazing start to another baseball series. The build up and tension had me ready to implode, and when it finally hit the precipice I had to stifle a scream. I love that both Isla and Luca had internal battles to overcome, and the dual POV allowed us to dive into their thoughts as they worked through it. I also really enjoyed that Luca was so supportive of Isla, and was such a great support and role model for her son.

I feel like Julia did a really great job touching on some topics that are not commonly talked about, such as teenage pregnancy, bullying, and disabilities.

If you love a swoony MMC who knows how to make his woman happy (😏😉), and a single mom who learns how to put her own happiness first after being solo for so long, this book is for you!

And that little cliffy at the end hinting at the next book in the series?? Sign me up, instantly shortlisted to the TBR.

I am so excited to see where the rest of this series goes. Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Game Changer - Julia Jarrett (4 Stars!)

Everything started with a cute tea spill on a very sexy Luca and I was immediately falling for this couple. Give me a mature romance where the man knows what he wants and goes for it any day of the week! Isla is all curves, and as a young single mom she’s never been ready to step into the dating pool until she’s tempted by the man she accidentally spilled her tea on ...only to find out later he’s her new boss!

This was my first ever fully inclusive read of an MMC with a disability and I thought it did so much justice and awareness of not living in shame just because you’re born different. In a world that often shames us for our differences I love seeing romance books evolve to not only acceptance but celebration. The Game Changer had me in all my emotions with Luca’s condition and how he learned to thrive and empower Isla’s son who was born with a similar limb difference, that representation meant so much.

The chemistry between Luca and Isla was fun, natural, and engaging right from the start. I loved that Luca was “all in” with Isla and never held back, even while trying to stay professional as her boss.

The small age gap wasn’t very noticeable and didn’t really impact their relationship beyond a few playful teasing moments about Luca being older. I would have loved to see that explored a little more, maybe through Isla’s son or the Cedar Creek players.

My only real struggle was toward the ending, when Isla pushed her need for independence so strongly. While I understand her desire to stand on her own, it felt frustrating when she repeatedly refused Luca’s help, especially when he offered her a full-time role she was already so incredible with, and more than capable of handling. It also felt unnecessary to me that he had to keep pushing after she made her feelings on it so clear.
Overall, you won’t be able to help falling in love with these two. Their story is heartfelt, inclusive, emotional, and incredibly swoony!!
