Two looks at this set of eight proved the volumes to be of the typical standard for this publisher – fine photographic presentation of their subjects, and clear writing. However as is too often the case, the information in that writing comes from not only the core text, but the picture captions, separate asides and factoids splayed here, there and everywhere – these have to be read beginning to end twice to get it all in without it feeling too bitty and interrupted. That said, if you need books for the primary school library regarding Mandrills (9798892507974) or Spider Monkeys (9798892507998) and no other primates, these are probably the ones for you. They teach about the life cycle, diet, habits etc as you'd expect – and both I saw start with a bit of drama involving a predator.
My preference for one book covering all the apes and monkeys in one, and for a more coherent sweep through the knowledge, mean these get three and a half stars from me.
Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 1 January 2026 - publication day!
I thought that this was a good introduction to Spider Monkeys.
The book has a few basic details and in line with the target age range, the book is basic and the language used would be great for those just starting out at school on their reading and learning journeys.
The images used were good and the layout of the book made it an easy read too. It would need to have a bit more content to give about 3 stars from me for this one
