One of the Family

My daughter’s boyfriend feels like one of the family. I couldn’t be happier to have him living with us. But now my daughter’s disappeared…

I never wanted to have an empty nest. So when my daughter, Liv, asks if she and her new boyfriend, Jensen, can move in, I’m thrilled.

Jensen is so helpful. He tells me how he loves being part of a close-knit family. He’s felt so alone since his parents died. And for me, his presence goes a little way towards replacing the son I lost.

Still, I can’t help but notice that Liv and Jensen are starting to argue. My daughter seems unhappy. Perhaps they just need some time alone together?

But when my husband and I return from our weekend away, Liv is missing. The relationship with Jensen appears to be over but he doesn’t want to leave. And then I discover exactly what he will do to stay in our family…

An utterly gripping psychological thriller that will have you turning pages late into the night. If you love Lisa Jewell and Freida McFadden you will be hooked on One of the Family.

I loved this audiobook! Bronwen Price masterfully brought the characters to life. One mysterious character’s narration was extremely chilling, with a creepy vibe. The plot is perfectly paced with many unpredictable twists and turns. I was always trying to figure out who was telling the truth in this story of lies and deception. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.

A recent college graduate vanishes after a weekend alone with her boyfriend.

🟣 What happened to her?

🟣 Was her boyfriend responsible for her disappearance?

🟣 Who is the unreliable narrator in the missing woman's family?

Although the premise of this tense and twisty domestic psychological thriller was ultra-compelling, the book had pacing issues.

Some chapters lingered longer than necessary, which slowed the tension just when I wanted it to ramp up.

Some characters were fully developed, while others were not.

I listened to the 10-hour audiobook, which could have easily been a 7-hour audiobook.

With a faster pace and fewer unnecessary subplots, this could have been a gripping 5-star read.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Bronwen Price.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was immediately drawn into this domestic thriller, with an intriguing premise and a creepy vibe. But I felt that the story got bogged down with too many subplots going in different directions, which detracted from the suspense. Although there were a few surprising little twists, I had much of the story worked out early on. A quick and easy read that started out strong, but fizzled out for me midway through.

One of the Family is one of those twisty turn-y psychological thrillers that eventually goes off the rails and leaves a bunch of plot holes, which was disappointing. However, I had a lot of fun, and honestly that's all I can ask for from these popcorn thrillers!

When Liv and Jensen move in with Liv's parents and teenage sister after graduating university to look for jobs, Jensen becomes extremely entangled with the family in a way that is off-putting for some and welcomed by others. After Jensen and Liv's relationship collapses, Liv abruptly moves out and goes no contact with her family and Jensen, resulting in Jensen being asked to leave. From there, things begin to occur that no one could've predicted and that are difficult to believe. I thought the overall mystery was executed well, but I think Ryder pushes and pulls the reader in too many directions for it to be completely believable. Liv felt really gullible and willing to put herself in danger for no reason, and Jensen was honestly boring. The ending left me wanting; the why behind several character's actions remaining unanswered didn't feel like a polished decision, it felt like a rush to the end so the story could be over.

The narration was awesome and did a great job embodying so many characters.

Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the ALC!

Before I begin, I’m in a clear minority with my review, there are loads of other readers that rated far higher than me so give the book a go, don’t be put off as the writing certainly isn’t bad. But for me I guessed the ending very early on, I even guessed the other couple of throw the reader off the scent twists. If I hadn’t I’d have been much more impressed and would have definitely thoroughly enjoyed the story.

I did enjoy the narration.

Huge thanks to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ALC 🎧

Liv and her new boyfriend have recently graduated university and her mum, Rachel, invites them to live with her and Liv's father. She is so happy to have Liv back in her old bedroom and to also have a new person to spoil.
One day Liv disappears after an argument and the boyfriend continues to live with the family. This causes a lot of arguments between Rachel and her husband and daughter Meg.

There is a separate plot of Meg being bullied and the story concentrates on this until the bullying is resolved before heading to Liv's disappearance and non-communication.

I was completely pulled into both mysteries which kept me invested in the story eager to see if the bully would be uncovered and also if Liv would be found..... alive.

One of the Family is an entertaining read with a few unexpected twists that will have readers eagerly turning the pages to see what happens next.

Rachel is beginning to feel the stirrings of an empty nester. Her eldest daughter Liv has been away at university in Newcastle for the past three years and her youngest Meg is on the cusp of going away to uni as well. Now she is facing a quiet life with just her and husband Dom. But things haven't quite been rosy there either. Maybe now they'll have the chance to reconnect again.

But first things first. The three of them are making the trip north from London to Newcastle for Liv's graduation. And it is there that they meet their daughter's boyfriend Jensen. Of course the graduation has thrown up a new conundrum - Liv and Jensen are moving back to London and need to find a place to rent. Rachel, who doesn't want either of her children to leave the nest just yet, comes up with the idea of offering them their loft conversion which had previously been Liv's room anyway. All they had to do was shift Dom's desk out of the spare room on that floor and that would give the young couple a sitting room of sorts to themselves. Problem solved! Or so she thought.

Rachel could see no problem with the solution she had offered. But Dom did as did Meg. They didn't know Jensen. Even Liv isn't sure it was the right thing to do, having already lived under the shadow of her mother's helicopter parenting. But it would give them a chance to save up for a deposit on their own place. Unfortunately, to do so meant one had to gain some employment in order to save for said deposit and that's something Jensen is showing no signs of doing. Liv has made some applications but apart from that, the couple seem to treat their time under her parent's roof as some kind of holiday - free rent, free food, free WiFi, utilities. Why would they want to leave? Except Liv does. But Jensen has his feet firmly settled under the table, feeling completely at home and like one of the family.

And then we have Meg. She wants to have her mother's attention for once, who seems to be overly involved in Liv and Jensen, and she doesn't like it. She is the target of some bullying which makes for uncomfortable reading and makes me feel glad that I was a teenager long before the age of social media and the internet. She also doesn't like Jensen so her solution is to remain locked up in her room away from everyone.

Dom? One could almost be forgiven for forgetting that Rachel even has a husband, he features so little. He voices his opinion every so often but he spends more time leaving early and working late before heading off to Dubai for work. And he shares none of Rachel's concerns and shows barely any support. Why is he even there, I had to wonder?

Things come to a head; Rachel and Dom cannot find an even ground and even Liv and Jensen are arguing. So Rachel books a weekend away for her a Dom to "reconnect" (albeit without running it by him first), ships Meg off to her sister's giving Liv and Jensen some time alone together to "sort things out". Unable to go five minutes without checking in with both girls, Dom understandably gets annoyed. After all, they are supposed to be spending time together. They end up having a wonderfully relaxing weekend away and return home refreshed and energised.

But when Rachel and Dom return home, there is no sign of Liv. Jensen said she left after an arguement and hasn't returned since. But what really happened? When Rachel steals a look at the room the couple occupy, she finds a scene of destruction - as if their arguement had become physical. But Jensen assures her it's just a lack of tidiness on his part. Rachel isn't sure what to believe. Dom wants him gone. What's the point of him being there now that Liv has gone? Meg finds him creepy and won't stay in the house if he's there and moves in with her aunt. But Rachel wants answers and won't stop until she gets them.

There is a lot going on here that will leave you irritated and pulling your hair out as well as questioning motives and what's truth and what isn't. Someone is lying, but who? And why? Someone has secrets, but who? And what? And someone is out for revenge, but who? And why?

Rachel annoyed the hell out of me. She was blind to everyone else's needs but her own. It was all about what she wanted and that was she didn't want either of her girls to move out of home which is why she offered the loft to Liv and Jensen. I said you can be forgiven for forgetting that she was married because she seemed to go ahead and make every decision herself without first consulting her husband. Not that she needed his permission but he lived in that house too and he had every right to an opinion as well. But Rachel just stormed ahead like everything was her responsibility. Dom barely featured. Even Liv felt smothered by her helicopter parenting. Only Meg longed for her attention and yet never seemed to get it.

This is a real pageturner that might have you guessing but then again, it may not. It may seem predictable but don't believe everything. I pieced most of it together before the end but there was still a little surprise before the end that wasn't so much a surprise whilst still being one - if that makes any sense.

An enjoyable read that was twisty and compelling that I devoured in a few hours.

I would like to thank #JessRyder, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #OneOfTheFamily in exchange for an honest review.

This intriguing read was a slow burn, tension building story that continues to make you feel unsettled! The author did a great job at building suspense with each chapter leaving me wondering what in the heck is going on & constantly questioning everyone’s motives.

Rachel’s naïveté bothered me beyond measure, especially with something so sinister surrounding Liv’s disappearance. It took her far too long to connect the dots, and Jensen’s deeply disturbing behavior only made that more frustrating.

Despite my irritation with several characters, I found myself completely invested in the search for answers. I was rooting for Liv’s safe return the entire time, hoping things would turn around before it was too late.

The audiobook narration was strong, adding another layer of tension that complemented the story’s dark undertones.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers filled with creeping dread, flawed characters, and secrets simmering beneath the surface, this one is worth the listen. Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture for an eARc, and Bookouture Audio for an ALC.

Liv and Jensen are a young couple just graduating from university and getting ready to build a life together. Liv’s parents, Rachel and Dom, know of Jensen’s past: his parents died in a fire, which he barely escaped. He spent months in the hospital with severe burns, but once he was physically healed, he had to deal with his emotional wounds. Suffering badly from PTSD, he found a friend and partner in Liv, and Rachel and Dom have become like parents to him.

Shortly after the graduation, Rachel invites them to stay at their home in London. The couple can find jobs, save up some money, and eventually get their own place together. At first, it seemed like a perfect plan, but as the months went along and Jensen still wasn’t looking for a job, he and Liv started arguing. Finally, her parents offer to head out of town for the weekend, send Liv’s younger sister Meg to her aunt’s house, and let the couple work things out alone.

Jensen and Liv do continue to argue, so much that she moves in with a friend. When her parents get home and only Jensen is there, they don’t know what to do. Liv isn’t answering their calls or texts, but the police say she’s not a missing person, and Jensen says she’ll be back when she’s ready. Meg, who is dealing with bullying, doesn’t trust Jensen and thinks he’s creepy, but her parents, who are also arguing a lot, keep hoping that Liv will come home.

The rest is mostly spoiler material, so we won’t go there, but this is definitely a page turner with a lot of twists. Where is Liv? Why is Jensen lying about things, Iike getting a job? What were the young couple arguing about so much that Liv left her family home and is now not speaking to any of them? You’ll get the answers, along with a lot of surprises and a great ending. This was a really fun fall read! 4.5 stars.

What would you do if your daughter and her boyfriend were looking for a place to live? Would you take them in and welcome your “son-in-law” into the family, or would you let them fend for themselves?

When Rachel is confronted with this situation, she doesn’t have to think twice. She’s thrilled that the young couple in love, Liv and Jensen, move in with them. At first, the atmosphere is great — but afterwards, it all seems to go downhill.

Rachel always wants to do the right thing and be there for everyone, but because of that she comes across as meddling and overprotective to her children and her husband. This pushes people away, and she isn’t believed when she voices her concerns. She had all my sympathy, because I found it sad that she kept running into walls. She’s also the one who actually takes action.

The same cannot be said about her husband Dom. He prefers to focus on other matters, and supporting his wife isn’t high on his list.

Liv accepts the offer but doesn’t want to stay in this situation forever. Jensen, however, feels completely at home and like part of the family.

And then there’s Meg. She wants so badly to be grown-up, but chooses the most immature way to prove it.

I really enjoyed this book. I kept betting on the wrong horse — or maybe not entirely. That probably doesn’t sound very clear, but when you read the book, it will make sense. ;) I also completely lost sight of one character, and that was definitely not smart of me.

In any case, my jaw dropped when all the explanations finally came out. The creativity in this story is sublime, and I never expected it to end this way. A huge feather in the cap of this author.

Everything worked perfectly for me, and I can only say: read and enjoy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you.

The narration was engaging and the story ultra realistic. A family is full of secrets, sometimes being in it means you dont see them all but you feel the ripples. Here is a family who long to have their eldest back at home after univ and her new boyfriend well he feels like part of the family already so why not ask him to live in your home with your family. Does it really matter that you know nothing about him and there is enough going on already? Such a big decision screams regret later. This was full of twists as the family unraveled but the boyfriend became a bigger mystery and at times i felt a major reason for the unraveling . I enjoyed this his true identity was very skillfully revealed . I loved the pov element it felt very grounded in reality and not too far fetched. Touching on a lot of difficult issues i found this a quick interesting listen where the pacing was just right alongside the unraverlling. The characters were well narrated, the husband featured very little in the story and that sadly seems too relasitic. Every family has issues but this story makes you question when you actually really know someone well enough to invite them into your safe space your family home. Highly recommended this is a 5 star listen that twists and turns will keep you questioning everything. As secrets especially the younger sister were revealed it gripped me more. Thank you so much to netgalley, publisher, a

Four star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️thriller read for me. Enjoyed the narration of this one. A new boyfriend that doesn’t keep a job and moves in with the family. Two daughters with their own problems and an ex girlfriend that appears and makes friends with the new girlfriend. Twisty little read and a surprise at the end to leave you hanging. The plot:
Recent college grad Liv begrudgingly decides she and her boyfriend Jensen should move to her parent’s home temporarily while they get situated in post-uni life. When Liv disappears for weeks after a solo weekend with Jensen, her family grows confused—and suspicious. Their bedroom shows signs of a violent struggle, but Jensen is unruffled and seemingly content to sit and await her return to the family home. Several other odd incidents plague the family, and soon it’s clear that everyone’s hiding something. Every clue seems to point in a different direction and Jensen is acting more oddly than ever before. As the tension mounts, Liv’s family must decide how far they’re willing to go to uncover the truth—and what they’re willing to believe.

My review:
A interesting, nicely paced thriller with a constant sense of dread and unease. The story kept me guessing until close to the end, with plenty of red herrings and clever distractions. At times it bordered on unrealistic how easily Liv’s family was placated after her disappearance, and how long it took them to grow truly concerned, but it didn’t pull me out of the story. Jensen is one of those obviously suspicious yet mysterious characters that you can’t quite pin down, and that tension worked well throughout. I enjoyed the pacing overall (although it could have been a bit faster) and the atmosphere. A quick, suspenseful read that makes me eager to pick up more from this author.

This story of a dsyfunctional family was absorbing as well as disturbing. It is absorbing in its realistic depiction of a family with multiple issues among multiple people, all living in a whirlpool of circumstances and regrets. It is disturbing because it is so easy to imagine oneself caught up in similar circumstances and being swept away by them. The nuclear family consists of a workaholic father, a meddling mother and two daughters, one just finishing secondary school and one graduating from university. Rachel, the mom, works in a boutique but not so many hours that she cannot involve herself in her daughter’s lives. She is concerned about Meg who is being bullied and about Liv who needs to find a job now that she has finished school. Add to that the fact that her husband Dom is away a lot on business trips, so most of the decisions in the family fall on Rachel. When Liv graduates, she moves home and brings her boyfriend Jensen with her. Jensen is a happy-go-lucky sort, thrilled to be with the family since his parents died when he was young and he has been on his own for a while. Rachel is happy to accommodate the young couple since it means that she will have Liv around again. The dad and Meg are not too excited about having Jensen living with them, but their warnings and appeals to Rachel fall on deaf ears. When Meg decides to strike out on her own, Rachel and her husband choose to go away for a weekend so that they have some time to reconnect. It also means that Liv and Jensen are alone for the weekend and can possibly work out some of their recent disputes about Jensen not actively looking for employment. When Rachel and Dom return from their weekend getaway, Liv has disappeared, and Jensen tells them that she has decided to leave. Getting to this part of the book, which I considered the central point of the story, took a while, but the author did a good job of keeping my interest by filling in with background information about all of the characters. By the time Liv disappeared, I was invested in the lives of all of the characters and wanted a happy ending for them, even though that did not seem feasible or likely. The book’s pace picks up from moderate to rapid once Rachel sets out on her quest to find Liv and Jensen is obviously hiding some secret that the reader is not privy to until the end of the book. I really was captivated by the storyline of a young woman just leaving her family and the boyfriend remaining with her family. This engaging and enthralling story kept me guessing to the end, with many twists and a lot of clues, some of which I was able to grasp and appreciated their subtlety. This is a masterfully written thriller that had my head spinning and my heart racing, especially as the inevitable conclusion was approaching without any sign of Liv. I enjoyed the realistic characterization, noting that even the secondary characters were developed enough for me to decide to relate with them or not. I especially liked the mystery and the relationships between the characters that kept the plot moving along. There was always some drama going on in someone’s life in this book. This is a book that was hard to put down once I got immersed in it, but it did take me about a fourth of the way through the book before I was thoroughly captured by all of the action and the lives of the characters. This is thriller/suspense/family drama at its best and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy contemporary fiction with a nod to Hitchcock-like twists.

Book: One of the Family by Jess Ryder
Format Read: Audiobook (9 hours, 15 minutes)
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

Quick Take
A tension-packed domestic thriller that tightens its grip with every chapter.  Familial loyalty, grief, and trust collide inside a house that never quite feels safe.

Full Review
Some stories don’t whisper; they settle in like an uninvited guest and make themselves at home.  One of the Family is that kind of thriller—quietly invasive, deceptively warm, and impossible to evict from your thoughts.

Jess Ryder builds a slow burn domestic mystery where loyalty, grief, and misplaced love knot together until the line between safety and danger blurs.  What begins as a simple act of kindness, inviting a daughter and her boyfriend to move in, turns into a claustrophobic study of trust and control.

The tension never lets up.  It hums in the background of every conversation and every glance as suspicion drifts from one family member to another.  The emotional core hits hard: a mother’s love, sibling friction, the ache of loneliness, and the human need to be seen.

Every secret peels back another layer, and just when I thought I’d found the right thread to unravel the truth, Ryder rerouted me completely.  The reveals land with purpose, and the red herrings were clever enough to keep even my inner detective guessing.

Bronwen Price’s narration adds another dimension.  Each character has a distinct rhythm and presence, softening when empathy calls for it and sharpening when tension spikes.  It feels less like listening and more like eavesdropping on the family itself.

One friction point for me was the lack of clear perspective indicators.  Occasional uncertainty about whose viewpoint I was in briefly pulled me from the narrative.

And while I didn’t dislike Rachel (the mother), she sometimes grated on my nerves.  I suspect that was intentional, though, as her personality widened the emotional distance inside the household and turned character into plot.  It’s a subtle but effective choice that reinforces just how deeply this story operates on emotion.

One of the Family is domestic suspense at its most effective: steady in pacing, thick with emotion, and layered like bricks building a wall you can’t quite see over until the final reveal.  A binge-worthy, twist-filled listen that left me impressed and eager to read more of Ryder’s work.

Jess Ryder is one of my favourite authors and One of the Family did not disappoint. From the very first page, this book felt unique—full of suspense, clever twists, and turns that kept me hooked right up until the end. I loved everything about it.

Rachel is a devoted mother to two daughters. When her eldest, Liv, returns from university with her boyfriend Jensen, Rachel offers them the loft space in the family home to help them save money. Jensen is delighted, eager to belong, but Liv isn’t as keen—and that’s where the tension begins. What could possibly go wrong?

The character dynamics are brilliantly drawn. Rachel’s need to keep her family close, Meg’s struggles as the younger sister, Dom’s distance, and Jensen’s too-perfect presence all add to the unease. Jess Ryder keeps you second-guessing everyone’s motives, and just when you think you’ve worked it out, the plot veers in another direction.

This is a twisty, addictive, and utterly compelling read. I raced through it in a day and was left reeling by the ending. Jess Ryder has once again proven she’s a master of psychological suspense.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Jess Ryder for the opportunity to read this brilliant book in exchange for my honest review.

One of the Family by Jess Ryder

A seemingly happy family until Jensen moves in….Liv’s relatively new boyfriend.
Is Rachel an over protective mum? Or not protective enough when her daughter Liv hasn’t been in touch? Who is she with? Does Jenson know? “She’s probably fine” is she? Does it matter that she’s in her 20’s?
What about her youngest daughter Meg, she is clearly struggling, she matters too doesn’t she? The derelict stately home, whose? How does it fit into this fast paced thriller that just keeps throwing you more questions? Who’s telling the truth?

Just as I thought I’d worked it out there was another twist, another question which left me spinning.

So many times I thought I had worked it out but another twist more questions!

A brilliant book full of suspense and questions throughout. As Rachel is portrayed as an over protective mum maybe she could have been more demanding at times. Overall fantastic!

Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and of course Jess Ryder for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy - due for release 30th October 2025.

I have to say that Jess Ryder is becoming one of my favourite authors and this book demonstrates why. Rachel and her husband Don love their two daughters Meg and Liv and Rachel especially does not want her girls move from the family home. So, when Liv and her boyfriend Jensen who have both graduated from college are looking for somewhere to live together Rachel comes up with the idea of offering them their loft conversion. Don and younger sister Meg is not as keen as Rachel on the idea as he feels that they have not known Jensen for very long. Liv herself is not sure this is the right thing to do but it all proceeds.

The book draws you in and moves along at swift pace and from the beginning you have the idea that this may all go sideways. Jensen seems overly keen to please and from the beginning and there is an immediate vibe that things are leading up to an ominous outcome. Plenty of tension and suspense that builds as the book progresses, and this is another book you find yourself saying just one more chapter.

A very exciting and thrilling read that I am sure many readers will enjoy. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy, all opinions expressed are my own.

This book was a very fast paced thrilling read. I was second-guessing my views on each character the entire way through and flip-flopping on who I could trust and who I couldn’t. There were tons of shocking twist as the plot unfolds, and just when you think there are no more twists, there’s another one. Fantastic plot, loved the narration, and the mystery and suspense on every page!

If you’ve ever wanted to yell at a fictional woman while sipping tea and solving a murder, this one’s for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.

For starters, I love reading (or in this case, listening to) British thrillers on audiobook — the narration always brings everything to life, complete with those endearing British-accented vocals that make the whole experience feel immersive.

Bronwen Price was the narrator here, and she was an absolute treat to listen to. Her voice fit the FMC perfectly, and she spoke at such a natural pace that the usual 1x speed actually worked just fine — which almost never happens. I typically speed up audiobooks both because I prefer a brisker pace and because the normal speed often feels painfully slow. But this one? Crisp, clean, and perfectly balanced. The production quality was excellent too, with clear and polished sound engineering.

As for the story itself — I really enjoyed it. Did I guess the culprit early? Absolutely. But it didn’t take away from the experience one bit. The subplots were all meaningful and connected beautifully to the main storyline, shaping not just the mystery but also the FMC’s mental and emotional journey. I’ll admit, I was literally yelling at her at times — not because of the writing, but because the character herself made me so mad. That’s how well she was written. Usually, when a character misses something obvious, I end up frustrated with the author for being heavy-handed. But here, the character’s obliviousness made sense. It fit who she was and what she was going through. Just really solid writing.

If you’re in the mood for a low-stakes thriller that’s both cozy and engaging — one that keeps you invested and occasionally yelling at your speaker — this is a great pick for thriller season… or honestly, any time of year.

This one hit the spot and was exactly what I needed. Definitely worth the listen. 🎧

I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Bookouture Audio via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.

How I Rate
Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.

⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me; I never DNF ARCs.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.

In this chilling psychological thriller, a mother’s dream of having her daughter close quickly turns into a nightmare. When Liv and her charming new boyfriend Jensen move back home, her mother is relieved to fill the quiet house—and happy to see her daughter settled. Jensen seems perfect: polite, attentive, and eager to be part of their family. After losing her son, the mother even finds comfort in his presence.
But beneath Jensen’s perfect manners lies something darker. Liv and Jensen’s relationship begins to crack, the arguments grow more frequent, and Liv’s spark starts to fade. When the parents return from a weekend trip to find Liv missing, Jensen claims their relationship ended—but refuses to move out.
As the truth about Jensen’s past unravels, it becomes horrifyingly clear that he’ll do anything to hold onto the only family he has left—even if it means destroying them from within.
One of the Family is a tense, emotionally charged thriller about obsession, grief, and the terrifying lengths people will go to feel like they belong. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell and Freida McFadden, it’s the kind of story that leaves you questioning how well you really know the people living under your roof.
Wow—this book completely pulled me in from the very first page! One of the Family is everything I want in a psychological thriller: fast-paced, addictive, and packed with twists that made my jaw drop more than once. I finished it in a single sitting because I had to know how it would end.
The story is filled with tension from start to finish. What begins as a seemingly heartwarming family setup quickly spirals into something dark and sinister. The atmosphere is claustrophobic in the best way, and every chapter adds another layer of unease. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the author threw in a twist that left me completely stunned.
The characters were so well written—complex, flawed, and realistic. I especially loved how the author explored family bonds, grief, and obsession in such a sharp, unsettling way. It’s not just a thriller; it’s a story about what happens when love and control blur into something dangerous.
If you enjoy books by Lisa Jewell or Freida McFadden, you’ll absolutely love this one. It’s a gripping, twisty rollercoaster that keeps you glued to the pages and leaves you reeling long after the final reveal.

Rachel loves her family which includes her husband Dom, her sister Corina, her oldest daughter Liv, and youngest daughter Meg. The story begins with the family traveling to watch Liv and her boyfriend Jenson graduate.
Knowing how challenging it can be to find a good paying job, and a place of their own, Rachel says Liv and Jenson can save their money and move in with them!
Dom isn’t happy with his wife suggesting this and Liv is taken aback at how quickly her boyfriend agrees.

Things seem to be going well as Liv and Jensen move in but there are noticeable growing pains. Meg had hoped to have time alone with her big sister. Liv is pounding the pavement trying to find a job. Dom is exasperated that Jensen doesn’t seem motivated to find employment and Rachel is doing her best to keep the peace especially running up to Meg’s big birthday celebration which ends in disaster.

Despite her best efforts, tensions simmer and irritation grows resulting in
Rachel offering to give Liv and Jensen the house for the weekend so they can truly feel like a couple, living together. Calling her sister, Corina, she happily takes Rachel up on her offer to watch Meg while Rachel plans a weekend for her and Dom to reconnect.

But as everyone returns, Jensen has startling news - Liv took off after breaking up with him and wants to be left alone; she doesn’t want anyone to contact her.
As if that wasn’t strange enough, Jensen doesn’t seem to understand the awkward position this puts Rachel and Dom in as Jensen has no plans of moving out.
Before long, the family find themselves targeted with nasty online messages, spray painting, and a car being keyed.

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and afraid, Rachel is left to deal with all of this on her own as her husband follows through with his business trips and Meg packs up to live with her Aunt Corina. Rachel is left in the house with no one to talk to except Jensen.

Everyone in the family has secrets. And as those secrets are slowly released, like air out of a balloon, it’s only a matter of time until someone grabs a needle and puts an end to everything.

This is was a FOUR STAR read for me and one that had me gripped!

I received the audiobook through NetGalley and from Bookouture Audio; the voice actress Bronwen Pryce did a fantastic job building the suspense, making me resist pushing the pause button.

This one just released on Thursday October 30th so go grab a copy now!

When Liv asks her mum Rachel if her boyfriend Jensen can move in after they finish university, Rachel is only too happy to have her daughter home and she likes having Jenson around. But she soon notices that the couple are arguing more and that Liv seems unhappy, so she comes up with an idea to give them a weekend alone to make up. Only when she returns, Liv has gone missing and Jenson does not want to leave. Soon she will discover just what he will do to stay in the family.

I have read a couple of books by this author and really enjoyed them so was excited to read this one. I liked the premise of this and the intensity, while it explored topics such as family dynamics and obsession. I thought I knew where the story would go for a long time but then started to doubt myself, with plenty of red herrings and twists and turns.

The characters were well written, although highly frustrating! I felt real anger at times due to some of their antics and behaviours. This helped keep the story interesting and suspenseful. I did find the pacing to be up and down, however for the most part it moved well. Overall this was a great domestic thriller and I look forward to catching up with what else the author has written which I’ve yet to read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

I Love the unexpected twist
The buildup to what's next and the shock of the ending

Liv and Jensen have graduated from college. Livs mother thinks its a good idea for them to move back into the family home until they can save up some money and be able to move on their own. Liv is putting in application after application while Jensen seems to be having a great vacation
Meg is being bullied online. She doesnt trust Jensen and just wanted her sister to move back home without Jensen
Mom doesnt want them to go.
Dad spends all his hours at work.
Something isn't right with Jensen. He has no family as they died in a house fire but it also seems that his background is false as well. He doesnt want to talk about it and changes the subject quick when asked
Liv is tired of Jensen slacking around her parents house. She wants this relationship to end and for him to be on his way. Jensen doesnt want that. He's apart of the family now. Can't just break up with him and kick him out....
There just might be consequences if you try

I have quite a few thoughts on One of the Family. I enjoyed it, but not all of it. I loved the narration by Bronwen Price, she was brilliant and brought the characters to life. It could have been much shorter (maybe 7 hours instead of 10), and I really hope Dom gets what is coming to him.

Now that I have that out of the way... The characters were fairly well fleshed out, but I found the premise rather far-fetched. I don't know, maybe young adult women do behave the way Liv did, but it seems unlikely. I'm almost positive that the whole scenario is all but impossible (but as I find myself saying more and more often these days, anything is possible, so maybe).

I intensely disliked Dom, and felt that after everything that had happened to Rachel, he was just a selfish git. Though to be fair, Rachel needed a good, solid wake-up call. You can take mother-henning too far, and Rachel got the t-shirt there. It was a tad nauseating.

Now Jensen intrigued me. He is the epitome of what they call the 'unreliable narrator'. And the potential there for another Joe Goldberg is great, but he really will need to pull himself towards himself.

I give it a solid 3 and a half stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Rachel is a helicopter mother and is delighted when her daughter and her boyfriend who have recently graduated from college come back to live with them in the family home. But things quickly go awry when the daughter disappears after a fight with the boyfriend and the boyfriend refuses to leave the family home.

This was a good read that held my attention throughout. I had some ideas of what was going on but did not piece together the entire story on my own. I think my biggest issue was that Rachel and her daughter had to be pretty big idiots to let some of the things that happened to them happen. Otherwise I liked the book and look forward to this author’s next offering.

Rachel is determined to keep her daughters close. Liv and her boyfriend, Jensen, have graduated and want to live together, so she offers them the loft conversion. Jensen loves the idea, but Liv isn’t as keen. Her husband, Don, and her other daughter, Meg, aren’t happy about it either. As events unfold, Rachel finds herself unsure of what to do. It's a twisty and gripping read, and I absolutely love this author’s books.
