Fanged Mistakes #3

High Stakes and Soulmates

Rate this book
Ezio
One would think that being over two hundred years old would at least give me some skill at wooing the man of my dreams, though oddly, I seem to be fumbling around more than wooing.
But that’s alright, I will fumble my way right into Cyrus’s life if he lets me. After a rocky start, Cyrus is finally starting to open up to me as he realizes that vampires might not be all bad.
When Cyrus pulls me into a case, he discovers how much he needs me… and my werewolf friend disguised as a detection dog.
My past haunts my every step, but there’s nothing I want more than to leave my mistakes behind and focus on my future with the man I adore.

Cyrus
Death after death draws Ezio and me deeper into a mystery that is tearing through the city. My fear is that whoever is killing these people is toying with us, and I know I can’t figure it out alone.
Thankfully, Ezio is prepared to help me with anything I need (and then some), and he doesn’t come alone. He has Casimir (who is happy as long as Steve isn’t around), Julian (when he’s not naked), and Yorick (why is Yorick here?), who are determined to end this. But what we find is unlike anything we ever imagined.
Though it can’t possibly be worse than the delivery lady walking in on Julian naked again.
Ezio is ready to help me through it (the murder bit, not the Julian bit), if only I can leave my fears behind me long enough to accept the man I want more than anything.

✅ Banter and silly situations
✅ Some M/M smut
✅ Vampires and werewolves
✅ Pace
✅ 2 POVs
✅🆗 Twist in the end (I love twists, but this one was weird)
🆗 Plot (a few plot holes imo)
🆗 Flashbacks
❗️❗️ Trigger warnings: deaths, staking, and blood
🔥 Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ / 5

While I liked this series overall, and there is the typical humour found in Alice Winters’s books, it’s not my favorite from this author. It is not bad, but I can’t seem to get into it, or to care as much about the characters as I do her other couples.

I honestly don't have much to say about this book. It was good, but nothing amazing or memorable, and I'm not sure if I will continue with this series if the author decides to write a fourth book. The patterns for Alice Winters' books are mostly the same, and it’s okay, because we know what we are getting into. But I feel that in this series, there are more plot holes, more flashbacks, and I care less for the characters in general.

I am not a fan of flashbacks. I know this is more of a “me” issue than an actual issue with the book, but it is my second Alice Winters book in a row with long flashback chapters, and both times it made it hard for me to get invested in the plot. The murders were intriguing at first, but I wished we had gotten more details about the resolution and motives behind them. We got an explanation, but it was short and left me a little disappointed.

The plot was only okay. Some things were far-fetched, and had me wonder how it could make sense, and then everything was explained in the last 15 pages… Kind of like when the villain monologues to explain his evil plan, instead of having us discover it through the plot. We were given some information that made no sense, and then a character just arrived and explained everything, and voilà! I feel that there are still too many plot holes…

I do not care as much about Ezio and Cyrus as I thought I would. I struggled to remain engaged in their story. I didn’t feel much connection or chemistry between them, and the way Cyrus jumped into a relationship with Ezio and was suddenly all-in felt very insta-lovey. It was not a bad romance, but it definitely was not my favorite from this author. I enjoyed Atticus and Yorick's interactions more than Cyrus and Ezio's.

I enjoyed this but that twist completely threw me and I did not see it coming at all...

I always suspected there was something more to Cyrus ever since we met him, so I'm glad we now have his full story, or as much of it as we can have! It was definitely nice to see him really solidifying himself in the friend group too.

Ezio's story was so much sadder than I was expecting! I really thought this book was going to be completely different in tone to what it actually was, but I like that there's more to Ezio than we've really seen. I did get annoyed with all the flashbacks though - it's just a personal preference thing and I'm never going to be the biggest fan of a flashback scene, or mutliple flashbacks throughout a book.

The crime was interesting but I wish there'd been a little more detail and resolution. Also what the hell happened to Zach? I kinda wanted to see his reaction to Cyrus and Ezio....

I will say that I am impatiently waiting for Yorick and Atticus's story now. I love their sniping and obvious want for each other, so I can't wait for them to get their HEA!

Book: 3 stars

Not gunna lie.. I didn’t reread the first two books which is what I should have done, but I jumped into this one.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if my reading preferences have changed, but this book felt like a copy paste of the way Alice Winters always does the second couple in a series. If you’ve read her series you’ll know what I’m talking about. It was a lot of flashbacks, and why it’s affecting the present.

Overall it was funny, but nothing mind blowing.

More glorious insanity in this series

Well, Holy Twist in the tale Batman!

Never, in a bajillion years would I have ever guessed the plot twist in this book.

It left me with my jaw dropping and an incredible amount of respect for how Alice made something so absolutely unbelievable be one hundred percent actuality.

So good, and no, of course there won't be spoilers. Just a hint that you won't guess it, so don't even try, just go with the flow and be prepared for the shocker in the narrative.

I didn't even mind the flashbacks tbh, as they provided such an integral part of the narrative and an insight into Ezio's history.

Of course, it's as crazy as the previous two, Casimir, Julian, and the rest of the vampires and werewolves, still behave in utterly incomprehensible fashion, and it still has me howling with laughter.

The best part of this book was Julian and Casimir, and surprisingly Yorick.

The book was funny and entertaining, and it managed to majorly surprise me twice which doesn't usually happen with Alice Winters books lol

I adored Ezio in the previous two books but I prefer him as a side character. I still loved him in this one but I just got bored with his backstory. The same thing happened with Alexei in the VRC series who I also adore as a side character.

I also didn't much care about the romance between Cyrus and Ezio and felt like it had already dragged out enough over the two first books where they're side characters.

As always with this series, the narration was fantastic and I laughed out loud quite a few times.

*WARNING: CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS*

*2.75*

I want to preface this by saying I still adore Alice Winters and will continue picking up anything and everything she writes. She's not a bad writer, but sadly this was such a disappointment for me. I was *so* excited to get to Ezio and Cyrus' story because I loved their banter in previous books, but I honestly felt let down. In some ways the story felt so rushed and info-dumpy to the point I felt confused about what was going on, but in other ways there was no explanation to certain things and we were supposed to just go with it. Like you're telling me that Ezio can sniff out a hair tie buried in a laundry basket that had the *slightest* whiff of blood on it and determined that the blood on the wall didn't belong to any of the victims, but he couldn't figure out that it was HIS blood? And it was never explained how Louis got ahold of the blood to begin with since it was in Cassimir's house and NOBODY sensed something was off? And for someone who was determined to hunt Louis down, Ezio couldn't recognize his scent on Cyrus? Even if it had been so long he forgot his scent, he didn't pick up it was another vampire? And you're telling me Cyrus didn't smell weird to ANYBODY THIS ENTIRE TIME BEING HALF VAMPIRE? I just didn't buy it.
That, and honestly the whole Arturo/Cyrus reveal felt forced and a little weird? Don't get me wrong, I'm a weirdo who loves a good amnesia/long lost lover trope, if it's done well. And sadly I don't think this was. Ezio was drawn to Cyrus to begin with because he was Arturo's distant nephew or something, and yes, he clarified he wasn't into him just because of Arturo, but it still just felt. Weird. It felt like Cyrus was this weird emotional stand in for Arturo, and when we find out they're the same person, it just felt weirdly like, "Oh, there was a reason I loved you because you were the love of my life this whole time." Like...I needed that whole plot point to be handled a little differently, it just didn't sit right with me; to me it really diminished the dynamic Cyrus and Ezio had built up together as a separate thing from Arturo and Ezio. And there was really nothing that set it up to go down that route; Cyrus should have had some flashbacks he couldn't explain, or something like that. Felt drawn to Ezio in a way Ezio felt drawn to him. Something that would have made this twist feel more planned and thoughtful than just kind of random and thrown in.
I really do love Alice Winters and her characters, and I will still 100% continue with the series. I'm just so bummed about this one, I was really looking forward to it.

4.5/5. Is it just me or was this one… idk… it hit different. It was heavy and the story was fucking excellent. There was still the humour and the ridiculousness and the snark and the banter, but it felt heavier. It cut deeper, and I loved it so much. I’m not ruining it, so I think this is all I’m gonna say. But I love that Ezio got the coolest love story because he was always special and precious and deserved his HEA. Oh, and fuck Steve. That is all.

This is one of Alice Winters’ best stories. It just felt a bit unfinished and with such a huge twist and such a big love, I think we as readers needed a bit more time to bask in it all.

I also think I would’ve enjoyed this more if I’d read the first two right before this one. There was so much I couldn’t remember! And honestly, I do not like flashbacks. This has a lot of them.

What the hell was that.

Wait, I know: this was a great way to make a bad day even worse!

To say I was shocked by the amount of angst is an understatement. The whole story felt like a love letter to the past when the man Ezio was salivating over for the past two fucking volumes was right there?? And what was that sudden switch in Cyrus’ feelings?? And don’t even get me started on the grand finale and the abnormally rushed explanation at the very end.

The main reason I’m furious is not because this was a bad book, nonono (shed a few tears even) - it’s just.. the initial setup went poof into thin air, and the parts that actually worked didn’t redeem its plotholes or my sheer, unexpected disappointment in how quickly their story got muddy. Also, big L for treating spice as an afterthought.

Give me Yorick and Atticus’ book RIGHT NOW.

This book wasn’t fun to read—it was actually quite heavy, with a lot of traumatic flashbacks from Ezio’s early life.

It reminded me of another Alice Winters book, “A Simple Mistake”—it similarly had an uneven relationship where one guy was obsessed and fully in love with the other, while the latter used that obsession to his advantage when it suited him. It bothered me how one-sided the affection felt. I pitied Ezio—he was too precious, and I wanted someone who’d adore him for who he was.

I’ve come to the understanding that I don’t like Alice Winters’ plots. I only enjoy the ridiculousness of her characters and their interactions.

The plot made no sense. Ezio kept tabs on Cyrus’s family for generations, so wouldn’t he notice that something was off? The amnesia twist was ridiculous.

LOTS of twists and turns in this one, but I am so freaking happy Ezio finally got his man!! This cast of characters is just so much fun! From the dog show scenes to how everybody seems to have decided it's okay to pick on Yarrik, I just kept on laughing. There were a few darker parts, but the majority of the story was upbeat and fun. I'm crossing my fingers Yarrick and a certain older vamp are coming next!!

Holy plot twists. I had been hoping for an Ezio and Cyrus novel for a while, and I'm incredibly pleased with the story we got. Also quite shocked at the twists at the end. Talk about unexpected! I'm satisfied and reeling. I'm pretty sure this is one I'll reread on audio eventually, like I did with the first two books in the series.

Amazing book!

Ezio was a sweetheart and when his heart latched onto Cyrus well, suffice to say, it was all sunshine and roses. Ezio tried, in his own way, to woo Cyrus, not that it went very well.

This instalment was filled with action, romance and never ending entertainment. There was a twist too which shocked me yet, made things that much more interesting.

Brilliant!

I have waited impatiently for Ezio and Cyrus to have their story told and I absolutely loved every single moment of it. Ezio is still utterly ridiculous at times but also steadfastly loyal to his found family and Cyrus is still an overworked and overtired Detective who can be a bit standoffish - especially to vampires.
An intriguing mystery has these two wonderful characters working together doing their best to figure out what’s going on, why it’s happening and who’s responsible. It quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse that stirs up long held memories and emotions for Ezio. It’s a mystery that involves plenty of action and drama for not only Ezio and Cyrus but also the rest of the crew. Of course this is perfectly balanced with humorous banter and plenty of shenanigans which include Ezio’s wooing attempts, an hilarious dog show, a cameo from the delivery lady again and a discussion on perfect vacuum lines in carpet to name just a few. Be prepared for for some feels regarding Ezio’s earlier life, lots of laughter and a huge plot twist that not only had me gasping in amazement but also completely blind sided me!

I normally go to Alice Winters for wonderful humor mixed with sexy times. And, yes, this definitely delivered. Most of the characters in this series are, well, kind of nuts. But, this one was....more. It was so very sad, reading about Ezio and what he went through before turning, his life in the army, his relationship with his father and brother (though, his brother seemed to be trying to change and ohhhh!) And Cyrus....oh, man, I did NOT see that twist at the end coming! It was an interesting one but really weird, too. It may take me time to really process that one. But despite the heaviness of the story, despite the sadness and all the violence (seriously, that last fight scene....how many died in that slaughter??), it was still funny, Julian was still running around naked (or as a wolf....or as a wolf pretending to be a dog at a dog show....), still had Casimir threatening everyone while doting on his dog, Atticus had his butler, Johnny, trying to kill Yorick....so many good times.

Highly recommend, looking forward to more of the insanity.

I adore Ezio and Cyrus! Their dynamic was entertaining in the previous books, and I'm glad they got a story of their own.

Their story had a lot of twists and turns, some very dark moments, and an extremely well-deserved HEA. But it also had the usual Alice Winters comedy, some floofy fun, and the craziest, most loveable cast of character. I hope we get more books in this series. More Casmir and Julian, more Ezio and Cyrus, and Yorrick and Atticus definitely need a story too!

Emotional but worth it

Ezio and Cyrus's book was nothing like I expected and was all the better for it.

Going in we know Ezio is being kept at arms reach by Cyrus but not why. It takes a while, a dog show, and a mystery unfolding to get to the heart of things.

When Cyrus finally lets Ezio in, there's plenty of sweet moments plus some confusion

I absolutely cannot give anything away but the end was so romantic it hit me right in the feels.

Of course there's some silly moments, did I say there's a dog show? Plus Atticus and Yorick are there bickering and flirting for most of it.

This has to be read again to see the things I missed first time around. I'm in awe of Alice's ability to surprise me

📘4.7→5 stars | 8th Apr 2026. This book is difficult to rate & review. The rating is purely for that insane twist and how it makes you work backwards to piece everything together. i have a lot to say, this is barely half of it. 💀 But defo this is my fav of this series, which is an insane thing to say considering how mad i got at it. This review avoids the main twist (it’s spoiler marked in tags), so this is very much my pov from both pre & post twist. And trust me, these frustrations matter in the grand scheme of things. Just keep that in mind if you read this.

🔹Story- 4.8⭐, Characters- 4⭐, Sex- 3.5 (for the 1 scene only)⭐, Epilogue- n/a HFN⭐

Anyhoo, it’s similar to Karsyn’s from VRC. They share a lot of similarities like Ezio having lost a lover and flashbacks of them falling in love. MC (here Cyrus) being an overtly OTT asshole in his own book doing all kinds of push and pull. But still i found myself unable to dislike him.

But this had the added trope that i hate: Ezio loves Cyrus becuz he’s apparently a descendant of his dead lover. So i felt kinda betrayed ngl. i really don’t like when a character sees their past lover in their current one. To be fair, Ezio does say he loves Cyrus for who he is.

And yet it felt like it was Ezio and Arturo’s love story and Cyrus is just a 3rd wheel. Their relationship barely builds as it gets constantly sidetracked by Cas and Juli, so Cyrus doesn’t even feel like the MC of his own book. So, against all odds, i gave it a try. And my god it was worth it. This is essentially a book about waiting.

Firstly the good parts:

✦Narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo. Looooved his Spanish accent.

Cyrus is a black cat and he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to date Ezio… or does he? And Ezio is this totally devoted puppy. They remind me so much of Liam & Gabe from Deadly Mistakes.

✦Mike gave Ezio the same cadence as Claude so naturally i imagined the same guy. But i loved Ezio. Loved him since book 1. He shows so much patience and devotion. He’s like a mix b/w Claude from VRC and guilt-ridden Liam from DM.

✦Difficult though it was for him to differentiate, i liked how Ezio loved Cyrus for himself and not as an image of Arturo and i’m glad Ezio reminded of this often.
It’s not like I want to mold him into the image of the man who offered me the world. I know they are very different people, though I really do like Cyrus for who he is. Even if I’d never met Arturo, I would have wanted Cyrus. But honestly… I’ve asked for too much already. Now I’m just getting greedy.

✦Loved the grovelling done by both especially Cyrus and him coming clean at how he wilfully tried to keep Ezio away from him.

✦Once Ezio and Cyrus do get together (not together together but like..) they’re definitely more cute. Am glad that it's always Cy who took the lead and pulled Ezio in.

✦HOLY MUTHERFUCKING SHIT THAT TWIST oh my god. Fuck me sideways and throw me in the ocean. It should’ve been predictable but it was so left of field that it was brilliant. That… that’s the sole reason that despite all my vexations, i will rate it 5 stars.

✦A satisfying on page vengeance on the villain. And the ending was everything.

❗ i rate sex different from sex acts and all my reviews reflect that. The views are my personal and may not align with yours. Only read if you’re ok with that. Else, please skip this next part.

✦ There’s only 1 sex scene at the very end (2nd last chapter) with bj as foreplay. Wow. Genuinely done so well. i may have cried. Scratch that, i did cry. This was love making and so much deserved. Oh and ofc both responsive. This series had some of the best sex i’ve read from AW.

✦i want Yorik and Atticus’ book, please!!! They’re supremely oblividiots and i live for such dorks.

✦A leashed and collared wolfie Juli. Naked Juli too. Guess who had the leash?😂

i had issues. And despite whatever that… transpired… in the book, these issues are still a problem for me:

♦️i mean, given the trope the structure feels split in two. One half focuses on Ezio & Arturo through flashbacks. i’ll admit… they were always cute. Their story is tragic, as expected from AW. Oh how i wished there was less of them on page. i made a grave mistake & skipped the flashbacks after the 50% mark so i dunno how Arturo died and so i had to go back and re-listen. They’re actually crucial to understanding Ezio’s side of the story.

The other half is… well, bread crumbs of eventually Ezio and Cyrus trying to build something anew. Becuz till then it’s just sexual tension, jealousy, and Cyrus pushing him away at every turn. It took so long for them that it felt like we’ve been there before.

♦️Cyrus himself… was hella frustrating. And the mad part is, that’s by design. He won’t date Ezio but also won’t let him go. Just constant push & pull. He strings Ezio along, then shuts him down, even admits he’s doing it… and still says he’ll make Ezio wait. Like?? You like him, you said so yourself. Then what are we doing here?? The entire 1st half of the book he keeps Ezio at bay and as “friends.” And Ezio just lets him. But yeah… Gabe, baby, is that you??

♦️And bcuz of that i needed Cyrus to come clean and their relationship to actually develop on page. Which didn’t happen cuz b/w Arturo’s story, the murders, Cas & Juli, and Cyrus pulling his usual shit… there’s no space left. Then it flips and Ezio makes Cyrus “wait” to protect him. Their romance just never gets proper time. i mean, Ezio’s guilt is massive, and Cyrus hasn’t exactly given him reasons to trust him, right? It was so frustrating cuz looking back… AAAAGGHHH *rips hair off*

♦️And don’t even get me started on how much page time is wasted by Cas & Juli. i love them but please, for God’s sake, they have their own book!!

♦️OM info: Um.. i will say, Arturo. i don’t like that a significant portion of this book is dedicated to them also kissing (on page) & doing stuff (off page).
Also here’s this detective named Zach but he’s into Ezio so he asks Cyrus about him. And in his mind Cyrus says it’d be a good thing, but clearly his mouth doesn’t lie (er i mean it lies so that the truth can come out😏). For a brief part, Ezio thinks Cy & Zach are together and get jealous. Lmao

📘Tropes & tags: •Vampire x human, •grumpy x sunshine, •black cat x golden retriever, •forced proximity, •only one bed, •push pull, •tortured heroes, •heavy care taking, •devoted MC, •found family, •shower together, •strict roles Ez /t Cy /b, •1st person dual pov, , •HFN.

I was so excited to finally read about Ezio and Cyrus and this book was so full of twists and surprises I was definitely not ready for. Sadly I was spoiled a big twist but it didn't take much from my enjoyment of the story. Those two were just so much fun and Cyrus was surprisingly sweet even if I missed how mean he was to Ezio in the first book. It was a mean I found hilarious because you knew that it was not what he really felt.
I really loved how we saw Ezio's life as a human, how he met the first man he actually loved, and how his life was full of pain. I was so sad for him, he deserved only good things. Ezio cried and I cried.
When things weren't dangerous we got some very hilarious moments with the whole gang, plus Atticus and the most absurd and efficient butler ever! I'm crossing my fingers theirs will be the next book!!

Very enjoyable book for the first 60%-ish. Ezio and Cyrus lived up to my expectations and so much more. I loved their relationship.

However, The ending was personally not for me. I get this is a paranormal book but there were so many loop holes and the “twist” annoyed me - like seriously what a cop out.

And at the end all I wanted to know if Ezio’s eye had healed and I’m not sure I got an answer to that.

This book had me sobbing! It was so heartbreaking and beautiful and heartbreakingly beautiful.

I loved Ezio from the very beginning, I was so excited for his book. I knew there would be some twists, so of course, like an idiot I spoiled it for me beforehand. I was just so nervous about it. That maybe diminished the impact a bit, but it was still good? I'm glad? I don't know, I am really glad but also I'm confused. Let me just say, without giving anything away, I'm so happy for Ezio and Cyrus.
Not gonna lie, I wasn't a big fan of Cyrus, he was just such a huge dick to my baby boy Ezio! Artus though, be still my heart. Their love story brought me to my knees. It was seriously soo sweet and fucking heart breaking. I still feel phantom tears on my face.

The side characters were great as always.
Though after three books, I'm getting sick of the meanness. It was horrible when they treated Ezio badly and it's just as horrible how they treat Yorrick. You can be funny without putting others down?! The dog show for example, hi-la-ri-ous and you didn't even have to treat a character bad for it.

I know I will think about this series, especially this book for a while. It's is truly amazing!

I loooove the found family created in this series.
I adore all the characters and how incredibly chaotic and ridiculous they are.

As for the romance between Cyrus and Ezio… I’m not gonna lie, I really wasn’t feeling it.
The chemistry just wasn’t there for me.

Ezio and Arturo however?
Those flashbacks had me both swooning, giggling and absolutely sobbing.

I was thinking this book was gonna be a 3 stars for like, 70 % of this book, but then everything popped off and came together in a quite convoluted but nice way in the last 30 % which made me reconsider.

Oh and I’m gonna need a book about Yorick & Atticus right the f*ck now.
