A Bloodveiled Descent

Rate this book
A missing brother. A forbidden magic. A choice that will rewrite her fate.

Evelyne Duskwood was born to wear silk, charm suitors, and secure her family’s legacy. But when her younger brother vanishes, leaving behind only a blood sigil seared into stone, her world shatters. In her search for answers, Evelyne uncovers a dangerous magic never died in the southern lands. It was merely hidden… and something far darker now stirs.

Her hunt leads north to Nerathar, a cursed realm ruled by a blood witch and haunted by creatures of shadow. But when Evelyne and her former betrothed fall captive to the ruthless Ironwolf pack, everything changes. Their untamed alpha is as maddening as he is magnetic, challenging her every step—and igniting something wild and undeniable within her.

Torn between the life she was raised for and the truth written in her blood, Evelyne is thrust into a world of wolves, forbidden magic, and a prophecy waiting to awaken.

As the crimson moon rises, she must cling to the woman society expects… or embrace the darkness, the magic, and the wildfire that was always hers.

I’m a proud mother of three beautiful children who are my entire world and the reason behind everything I do. I’ve been lucky enough to share my life with my high school sweetheart, my husband, who has been the love of my life since I was sixteen.
By day, I work full-time in the field of Health Information Management. By night, I’m an avid fantasy romance reader who never quite expected to become a writer. I didn’t set out to publish a book; I just wanted to put my thoughts into a story. But as the characters and world came to life, I realized there are readers out there who love this genre just as much as I do and might find joy in the journey I’ve created.
So why dive into writing? Because sometimes we all need a place to escape. And my escape includes a fictional universe full of magical creatures, fierce heroines, and romance.

“Did you hear me, Evelyne?” His voice came out rough. “You’re mine. And if another male touches you tonight, I’ll tear his throat out.”

I am always up to read a book with wolf shifters and A Bloodveiled Desecnt was a decent read.

This book has both good and evil witches, wolf shifters, humans, dark shadow beings, blood magic and more. The world and character building is well done, and I really liked Evelyne, the FMC. The plot is twisty and definitely kept me guessing; it wasn't 100% predictable so it kept me engaged and turning the page.

I really enjoyed Evelyne as a character. She is tough and spirited and she definitely speaks her mind. She does what she thinks is right and doesn't let others steer her from her course, even when being pressured to do otherwise.

I will probably read the next book after the way this one ended. I didnt see that coming and I would like to see how things play out in the next book.

What a ride. From dancing in the halls high society to journeying through woods chasing the destruction of dark magic.

The FMC shows such resilience. She goes through so much and still finds it in herself to keep moving forward and stays loyal to those she values.

The MMC is almost your typical alpha, but just almost. There's still so many layers to see.

This is mainly from Evelyn's POV, but there are more POV's throughout.

I enjoyed the world building and the relationship growths between characters. It felt organic. The ending has me feeling impatient for the next book.

Double review day: English first, Dutch next!

Between Light and Darkness

Evelyne Duskwood, the daughter of a powerful family, is about to make her debut and find a suitable husband. When her brother William falls ill just before the ball, she becomes deeply worried and has no desire to attend the festivities. As he grows weaker, he suddenly disappears. Although her parents forbid her from searching for him, Evelyne goes anyway. Her fiancé Alaric also sets out to investigate on behalf of his father. Their paths cross, and they are captured by the Ironwolf Pack. Evelyne feels an undeniable attraction to the pack’s alpha and is forced to make a choice. Will she follow the rules dictated by her title, or embrace the magic and darkness that have always been a part of her?

Opet’s writing is smooth and vivid. The setting is carefully crafted, bringing the world effortlessly to life. The characters are layered and compelling, and the alternating perspectives of Evelyne and Alaric create an engaging dynamic that shows how their thoughts and feelings intertwine.

‘A Bloodveiled Descent’ has it all. The story begins in a world of corsets, grand gowns, and daughters married off to strengthen power and wealth. Gradually, the fantasy elements emerge, with magical beings who can transform into wolves, while tension steadily builds. The addition of romance is subtle, providing balance without overshadowing the story. The result is original and forms a rich, complete narrative.

‘A Bloodveiled Descent’ is Haley M. Opet’s debut and what a debut it is. As the first part of a duology, it captivates with a strong and intriguing plot, immediately making the reader curious about how the story will unfold.

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC

Thank you to Nerd Fam for sending me this copy of A Bloodveiled Decent for the month. This book….wow. All I have to say is wow! From beginning to end, I was hooked! The world building, the dark magic and overall magic system was truly a joy to learn. The characters will have you loving, hating, questioning them all at once but make you fall in love with them allll over again. Evelyn is the embodiment of power. She shows you no matter how life can hurt you and break you down, love and strength can make you stronger. The bond she has with her family, Kaldrek and the wolf pack…it’s definitely unbreakable.

This is by far one of my favorite ARC reads of the year and Haley Opet has become one of my favorite authors so far. Her writing style id so addictive and captivating that I’m still in awe and I want more!!! I can not wait for the book two and to see where this new journey leads.

Also the cliff hanger at the end….😳

Of course, I have to start off with thanking The Nerd Fam and Haley M. Opet for allowing me to read A Bloodveiled Descent as an ARC. I’m always still floored when I’m chosen. While I enjoyed the story, and I absolutely needed to know what happened in the end, this wasn’t my absolute favorite. A Bloodveiled Descent gets a solid 3/5 from me.
The story started off very strong. I loved the setting and time period - an old England sort of high society vibe. It seemed spooky, and the buildup in the beginning lent a foreboding feeling to the story. The mysterious illness of the FMCs (Evelyn’s) brother was intriguing, as was her imminent reentry into society and the marriage market.
Evelyn was an interesting FMC, to say the least. She’s your typical - I want to wear pants instead of a ballgown - kind of FMC, but I appreciated that she had a bit more tact than some other FMCs that I’ve seen. She balanced her society life with her desire for more very well, and I loved that her dedication to her brother was so clear. What I didn’t love was her romantic relationship arc(s). She came off as if she would take whatever was given to her from the one that she loves, and that is not really my jam. I prefer a woman who challenges her love interest to improve and not take whatever scraps she’s given.
I won’t spoil anything about the MMC because there’s a lot to unpack there, but he’s pretty nice. His character arc was interesting, and I definitely didn’t see his big twist coming. Their love kept me pretty engaged throughout the story, and I like him as a character.
In terms of the plot, I felt like all of the right ingredients were there, but they just didn’t jive for some reason. One of the biggest reasons was because the plot felt a bit forced. There were several parts where I felt like I wanted a “show, not tell” moment, but I just got told what happened. I love the thrill of uncovering the meaning behind different aspects of a story, or actions that a character takes, but it felt to me like it was overexplained. It felt a little bit more NA/YA with spice instead of having the depth of story that I wanted.
Now, with all of that said, I’m probably still going to pick up the second book, because I want to know what happens. Am I going to bump it up my tbr ahead of other things? Probably not. All in all, it was a fun ride, and I don’t regret reading this, but I’ll be picky with who I recommend this to.

This one was a bit of a slow burn for me. Literally and figuratively. The first 25-30% really dragged and I kept waiting for something big to happen. It wasn’t bad, but the pacing was glacial, and it took a while before the plot truly began to unfold. Once it did, though, I was hooked.

The story feels like two different books in one, which ended up being kind of a treat! The first is all regency-inspired vibes full of courtly manners, ballrooms, and an arranged marriage. The second half dives right into darker fantasy territory: enemies to lovers, fated mates, and shifters. I loved the shift once things started unraveling. We get to see Evelyne develop between both parts into a fierce heroine and watch how her dynamic with Alaric and Kaldrek evolved throughout of the story.

Overall, it’s a beautifully written fantasy with strong characters and atmosphere, if you can make it through the early slow pacing. I’m definitely excited to see where book two takes things!

Thank you so much to the author and The Nerd Fam for this ARC! 💫

The FMC was a wonderful character— kind and gentle, yet fierce in her own way. I really loved how she refused to stay suppressed and always stood her ground. The story also has that elegant nobility feel, so if you enjoy aristocratic settings, this one might be for you! 👑✨

The characters were distinct and well-written, each with their own charm and depth. I especially liked the MMC and found the mystery surrounding the FMC’s brother’s illness really intriguing.

However, I did struggle with the pacing. The story started off quite slow, and the main plot mentioned in the blurb doesn’t really begin until after the 20% mark. The first part mostly focused on setting up the world and some mysteries, but I found myself wishing for more actual “investigating” scenes rather than just hearing about them.

Overall, the world-building and setting were beautifully done, and there were definitely moments that captured my attention. But the pacing and plot progression made it a bit hard for me to stay fully invested. Still, I think readers who love slow-burn fantasy with noble courts and a touch of mystery will really enjoy this one!

This book is incredible.
I had to take a walk after I finished it today.
It’ll be awhile before I get my jaw off the floor.
It starts slow - we get a lot of background, character and world building - which is actually very enjoyable. You meet Evelyn, who at 22 is rapidly approaching spinsterhood, much to her well-off family’s chagrin. Not because of anything wrong with Evelyn herself, but because for years her focus has been on her sickly younger brother, Cillian.
Out of desperation her parents are ready to arrange her marriage to a gross older man but luckily her best friend, Alaric, a neighboring young man, saves her in more ways than one and they become betrothed.
But secrets have a way of destroying things in Evelyn’s life and then when Cillian suddenly disappears, she gives up everything to go save him.
What follows is as far from the first part of the book as you can imagine!
Haley Opet has written what I KNOW will become the next big thing in fantasy fiction! I cannot wait for the sequel ands I’m so incredibly grateful to have been gifted the arc by The Nerd Fam!
A million stars!

A Bloodveiled Descent by Haley Opet is a true “don’t judge a book by its cover” fantasy epic.

I devoured this novel in one day, to the dismay of my 5:30 a.m. alarm clock, and I haven’t stopped thinking about Lady Evelyne Duskwood since. Her transformation from a typical lady laced in corsets to a dagger wielding demon slayer was nothing short of captivating.

Evelyne, a twenty-two-year-old second daughter of Lord Duskwood, faces the end of her independence as her parents pressure her to find a husband this season. Her elder sister the ever perfect Lady Aurelia frustrates her to no end, but her wonderful handmaiden is there to ground her. To preserve the secrets of Northern magic between two aristocratic families, she is set to marry her closest friend, Alaric. But their betrothal is shattered in one of the most heartbreaking betrayals I have read in some time. My heart ached for her pain, and when she still called him her “closest friend,” it hurt even more. Despite his later efforts to redeem himself and help her on her journey, I could not forgive him. The addition of Calista to the betrayal made it even more devastating. Credit to the author for writing a wonderful scene that made me feel the betrayal rather than simply read it.

Cillian, Evelyne’s delicate and studious brother, is afflicted by illness, and their bond is beautifully rendered. Her fierce protectiveness of him gave her character incredible depth. The introduction of Kaldrek’s shifter pack elevated this story even higher. His loyalty, strength, and devotion to his pack were perfectly portrayed, and I adored him from his very first appearance. Evelyne’s fiery defiance when he entered her tent, and his immediate respect for her because of it, made me love them both even more.

The worldbuilding is rich and dark, filled with magic, monsters, dying wonderful customs. The tone blends historical fantasy with gothic horror, and I was shocked by how truly evil Vaelora was. Some of the deaths struck unexpectedly hard, and the grief felt raw and real.

I do not give five stars easily, but A Bloodveiled Descent completely transfixed me. I could not stop reading and am already eagerly waiting for book two.

A small note for clarity: consider adding a brief marker for Cillian’s point-of-view transitions, as it was a bit confusing at first. And while the cover is stunning, I do not know who the male figure is, and I hope it is not Kaldrek. Consider removing the character images altogether.

Thank you to the Nerd Fam and Haley M. Opet for the eARC of this book!

This book was brilliant. The world-building is exquisite, starting with a solid Regency-style setting that gives major Bridgerton vibes. The first third of the story is a bit slower, but it’s essential for establishing the main characters and their motivations. We meet Evelyne, a 22-going-on-23-year-old navigating yet another courting season; Alaric, her closest friend; and Cillian, her 20-year-old brother who is suffering from an unknown illness. This opening section lays a strong foundation, providing rich backstory and introducing the hidden magic threaded through the world.

Parts two and three dive fully into the magical elements, shifting away from Regency vibes and into something even more captivating. The character development is phenomenal, new characters are introduced seamlessly, and the growth of the existing cast is handled masterfully.

The world-building continues to shine throughout the second and third parts. Witches, shifters, and all manner of terrifying creatures populate the pages, yet it never feels overwhelming. The multiple POVs are used effectively, enhancing both the story’s depth and the characters’ emotional arcs.

There’s a perfect slow-burn romance, fated-mate tension, and a villain you can’t help but despise from the very beginning.

And that ending? Absolutely wrecked me. I need book two ASAP!

I really want to give this 5 Stars but the first ⅓ of the book was just really boring me. It wasnt bad, but the plot was introduced very slowly, so there was just zero tension.
Alaric was annoying me a bit, because the chemistry between him and Evelyne just didnt feel there-after reading the entire book, it totally makes sense, tho.

Evelyne is a very fun main character, I love how sharp-tongued she is. My girl doesnt let anybody mess with her!!

When Kaldrek was introduced, the book became sooo much better for me. Him and Evelyne are giving "the beauty and the beast" vibes in the best way possible. He knew what he wanted and went for it!!!

Overall an insanely good book. After the slightly slow world-building in the beginning, it got so much tension. There were multiple mind-blowing plot twists that really kept me on the edge of my seat! Having to survive on the cliffhanger at the end is cruel tho, cant wait for book 2!!!!

The way I did not expect this to be a 5+ star read! The beginning had me a bit worried thinking this was going to just be another time era piece with fantasy elements and I've read dozens of those so I wasn't really expecting much.. but after about 50 pages, I realized that this was going to be so much more than I thought! This gave me the feeling of 'if twilight was told back when Bella was learning about the packs and this is a story of someone kind of similar to her' and what I mean by that is we start off not believing magic and fairytales being real and dealing with crazy family expectations and then discovering its all in fact real and traveling with the wolf shifters and I've got to hush before I give spoilers LOL. Basically, this was for the girlie's who like a more polished, intellectual fantasy read but still thirst for romantic connections and a dash of spice. This was a slow burn and things didnt instantly connect, an authentic relationship is established here, its not just an instalove. And the storyline itself was wicked cool! It was not an average fantasy read for me and I flew threw it in a couple hours.

This was a really engaging fantasy! The story starts out slow, but you gain a lot of character background and world building. It takes a bit before the elements of magic come into play, once that happens the story really picks up. I loved all of the plot twists, the strong sibling bonds, and the shifter parts of the story most. That ending definitely had me needing the next book.

Read this if you like:

From elegant dances in high-society halls to perilous chases through dark, magic-tainted woods, this story had me hooked. The FMC’s resilience shines! She endures so much yet continues to push forward, staying true to those she loves. The MMC might seem like your typical alpha at first, but there’s so much more to him beneath the surface. Told primarily from Evelyn’s POV, with a few others woven in, the story’s world-building and character relationships felt natural and well-developed. The ending left me eager and a little impatient for the next book!

So I just finished an ARC @thenerdfam sent me yesterday. This is book one in The Solwyn Duology. First let me start of by SCREAMING! Ahhh! The ending had me absolutely losing my crap. WHY?! I ask WHY did it have to end like that?! I definitely need the second book ASAP! This book had so many twists and turns that I never knew what was going to happen next! There was so many unpredictable moments that I literally couldn't stop reading.

The main character Evelyne though born into the life of a Lady is an absolute baddie! Her character growth is everything.

Beginning A Bloodveiled Descent, I wasn’t sure if I was going to finish it. I found it hard to get into and the many different POVs difficult.

I did end up sticking with this book and found it to be an interesting read that kept me guessing.
I was very surprised by a couple twists and thought the imagery was well done.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5

The beginning of this book gave me Bridgerton vibes and I was loving it! Then everything started picking up with the magic system, wolf shifters, and a certain alpha 🥵

The brother had the most interesting storyline at the start. We don't get as much from him in the middle third, and I really wish we had more from his POV throughout the entire book.
I was absolutely DELIGHTED with the romance. Evelyn and Kaldrek had probably the best slow burn I’ve read in a while.

You. Are. Mine. 😩🔥
That one line completely sent me — I was hooked from that moment on.
If you’re into stories that blend dark fantasy and romance, think Bridgerton meets the supernatural. This book has it all: dark magic, wolf shifters, powerful Alphas, enemies-to-lovers tension, and an arranged marriage that keeps you on edge the entire time. Add in a missing brother and a Dark Witch who wields blood magic, and you’ve got a story that’s impossible to put down.
I honestly wasn’t expecting any of it, but I ended up loving every twist and turn. The pacing, the tension, and the world-building had me completely invested. Now I’m counting down the days until book two!

A truly captivating story brimming with intrigue, suspense, and thrill, set in a world reminiscent of the Regency era yet steeped in the supernatural. Each chapter builds seamlessly upon the last, layering new depth and dimension as the mystery intensifies. The tension crescendos into a torrent of excitement, until you suddenly realize you've missed eleven calls, twenty-seven text messages, and your coffee is cold because it was brewed eighteen hours ago.

A Bloodveiled Descent gets 5 stars from me - not only for the amazing, had me on the edge of my seat, plot, but also for the plot TWISTS. I didn't even see them coming!
I loved our main Character Evelyn, because she was unapologetically herself. Even if she was different than others, she stood strong in who she was and didnt waver for the opinions of others. Her devotion to her brother made me cry more than once as an older sister.
The world building captured my attention instantly, but the adventures of the second half of the book really cemented my 5 star rating. I love a good adventure arc and this book did it perfectly!

If you love a strong opinioned FMC, witty banter and a whirlwind adventure with plot twists you never see coming, this book is for you!
Can't wait for book 2!!

Solid 4 stars!

I really liked this book! The writing was great and I enjoyed the world-building and characters.

I took off a star as the first part seemed a little bit long and could probably have been condensed while still being able to set up the relationships and world effectively.

Parts 2 and 3 are where the action happened and I flew through those sections! It did leave on a cliffhanger so I look forward to the conclusion in book 2

This was a good start to this series. There is a lot of world building and character development in this initial story. The FMC is on a journey and meets with several challenges. She is tested multiple times and even by those closest to her. Will she forgive and forget or are the betrayals too much? There is magic, and paranormal elements which made for a perfect Halloween time read. I look forward to the next book to see where the characters end up.

4.5 ⭐️
*A Bloodveiled Descent* by Haley M. Opet completely pulled me in from the first chapter. The world-building is rich and haunting, full of blood magic, ancient curses, and a slow-burn romance that had me hooked. Evelyne is a strong, determined heroine, and her dynamic with Kaldrek is both tense and addictive. The writing is lush, the atmosphere dark and immersive, and the emotional stakes stay high throughout. My only complaint is that the ending left me *desperate* for the next book — but that’s also a sign of how invested I was. A beautifully written, gripping start to the Solwyn Duology!

A blood veiled descent is a historical fantasy romance with witches, wolf shifters and long forgotten prophecies that keep you wanting to turn the page! Thank you to the nerd fam and Haley M. Opet for the gifted e-arc.

Evelyne duskwood is a 23 year noble borne into high society whose legacy is to follow in her mother's footsteps and marry a proper noble man. However when her brother's hallucinations return and he goes missing, she uncovers truths she always believed to be fairytales and myths.

She learns magic still exists in the southern lands, and on her journey to find her brother she falls prey to the ruthless ironwolf pack. Torn between the life she was raised for and the truth written in her blood, Evelyne is thrust into a world of wolves, forbidden magic, and a prophecy waiting to awaken.

I enjoyed this debut novel! I thought the concept was really interesting and I liked the way the author blended high society romance with a fantasy world. I thought that was unique and made for a really interesting setting for this book!

I really liked our female main character. She was super witty and playful. Her banter with all the characters she interacted with was always really enjoyable to read. I liked her personality and I felt we got a lot of growth from her throughout the book.

I liked the wolf shifter pack and the way it was integrated into the plot. I thought the way the romance shifted through the book was really smart.

I felt that Part 1 of the novel was not well paced. It was about 30% of the book and I felt it could have been 10%. There is a lot of events that take place that really didn't advance the plot and weren't necessary and so it could have been shorter and would have made the book more well balanced.

It took a really long time for us to get to the main part of the plot which is the shifters and the magic and the journey to save her brother. I also found the back and fourth between POVs in the same chapter could at times be confusing and I think added to the odd pacing especially in part 1. Sometimes thing felt like I was being told them instead of shown them and I personally don't like that writing style.

Because we spent so much time in part 1, I struggled with the believability of the FMC and the MMC romance. It feels so brief and very insta-love and I just wish we had more complexity to the relationship and built up tension throughout part 2.

I didn't expect a few of the twists and turns and I liked the cliffhanger the book ended on so I would read book two when it comes out and I'm curious where the journey will go!

From the very first chapter, I was completely immersed in this intricately crafted world of unforgettable characters.

There’s something wrong with Cillian. My brother has always been quiet and studious, but when he starts falling into trances, hallucinating, I’m expected to dismiss it and keep playing the part of the demure lady, smiling prettily to secure a husband. But I can’t ignore the signs. I’ve seen it, an inky mist creeping along the halls in the night. Something is happening. Something sinister. Something unnatural. And when I wake one morning to find Cillian gone, everything changes in an instant. I won’t sit idle while the darkness takes him. I will find him, I will bring him back, and nothing will stand in my way.

This was amazing! Part 1 is a slow build, filled with court-life drama, people scheming and trying to snare a suitable husband, while a subtle thread of magic weaves quietly through everything. It lays a strong foundation with likable characters and plenty of magical intrigue. Then in Parts 2 and 3, the story deepens. We encounter witchy villains, monsters, training sequences, shifters, seers, everything you could want. The world expands, the stakes rise, and the characters grow and evolve, turning the tale into a sweeping, epic adventure.

The writing completely ensnared me. There was something about it that made me read faster and faster. I couldn’t get enough. I also really appreciated the multiple POVs. They were handled seamlessly, giving such a well-rounded view of the story.

Evelyne Duskwood was phenomenal. A proper noble lady who never truly fit in with the stuffy court. She was full of heart, determination, and that perfect touch of stubbornness we love in an FMC. She truly comes into her own, transforming into a warrior, a force to be reckoned with. Alaric, her best friend and ex-fiance, is exactly the kind of too-handsome, flirty, infuriating character who, deep down, is so much more. His POV added incredible depth to his character, and I can’t wait to see more of him in book two.

Then we have Kaldrek, alpha of the Ironwolf pack who captures and later trains Evelyne and Alaric. He’s strong, brutish, and utterly captivating. Kaldrek and Evelyne’s slow burn was perfection, building into searing heat, and I loved every second of watching it consume them.

I devoured this, and that ending has me absolutely desperate for book two!

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the eARC!!

4.5/5 stars
spice: 2/5
chemistry: 3.5/5
cliffhanger: 4/5
emotional damage: 3.5/5

Tropes:
slow burn
alpha romance/shifters
found family
fated mates
enemies-to-lovers (mild)
hidden magic
regency romance

From the very first page, A Bloodveiled Descent pulled me straight into a world of noble duty, ancient magic, and forbidden attraction. Haley M. Opet delivers a dark romantasy full of courtly intrigue, shifter tension, and that perfect mix of beauty and brutality that keeps you reading “just one more chapter” until it’s 2 a.m. (not exaggerating; this actually happened).

What I loved:
Evelyne Duskwood is everything I love in a heroine: refined and composed on the surface, but fierce and unyielding when her world starts to crumble. The world-building is lush and layered; every kingdom, forest, and demon-haunted border feels alive.

And let’s talk about the chemistry. Evelyne and Kaldrek’s dynamic crackles from the start.
While I'd call this a mild enemies-to-lovers, it's the kind of electric tension that makes you question every wall the characters build around their hearts. What starts as something that feels a little like insta-love, deepens beautifully once all the truths surface.

I also loved the rotating third-person POV (it gave me Throne of Glass vibes in the best way). There are multiple subplots and perspectives, but the author keeps them balanced and easy to follow for no confusion, just richness.

Yes, the pacing takes its time to build, but like any regency-inspired slow burn, the payoff is so worth it. And that ending? Let’s just say I’m side-eyeing the calendar waiting for book two because...that cliffhanger!!!

Final thoughts:
A Bloodveiled Descent is a must-read for romantasy lovers who crave fierce heroines, dark secrets, and shifter-tinged tension. If you love when romance and danger walk hand in hand, get this on your TBR STAT.
