See also: Robert Galbraith Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.
Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.
Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.
Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.
Move over, “Miss-Know-It-All” — Hermione Granger is here, and she’s proving just why “know-it-all” is a compliment, not an insult. In this third Pocket Potters companion, Hermione steps into the spotlight, and boy, does she shine.
If Ron was about loyalty and laughter, Hermione is about spells, logic, and solving the unsolvable (often before breakfast). In this mini-encyclopedia of the Potterverse, we get a compact but rich portrait of what makes Hermione tick: her love for books, her potion-brewing prowess, her uncanny ability to whip out a spell in the nick of time (or slightly before the nick), and her unshakeable commitment to logic even in a dragon’s face.
Laura Proietti’s illustrations are a treat. She breathes life into Hermione’s earnest expressions, her wand-wielding moments, and even the quiet scenes in the library. You can practically hear her muttering “Petrificus Totalus” under her breath while pushing past Ron’s theatrics.
This volume sits perfectly alongside the Harry and Ron guides — another charming, well-illustrated tribute to the magic that made us all want to study at Hogwarts. I’ll be first in line for the next ones as they come out.
PS: As with the others, formatting can be a bit wonky on some e-readers — but the EPUB works beautifully in PocketBook Reader on Android (thank Merlin for small mercies).
I love Hermione Granger. These books are great if you would like to know about one character and who they are as a person. These books are great for kids that are interested in Harry Potter but are too young to read the actual books. The illustrations in these books are beautiful the colours are vibrant and everything fits so perfectly.
I wanted there to be new information, like stuff we wouldn't have known before but even this information is good because it's short and sweet and introduces you to the character. I like these books and I think the littles will like them too.
Love the illustrations in this book about all things Hermione Granger. I do wish it had new information though, like extra info you can’t find in the series, because we do get a lot of quotes but nothing die-hard fans don’t know already.
Třetí Potterovský průvodce vypráví o té nejchytřejší malé čarodějce, jakou jsme kdy měli tu čest poznat. Nebýt totiž Hermiony, měli by Harry s Ronem život o dost těžší.
Oceňuju věrnost knižní předloze a jejím nepoddajným vlasům.
Honestly, these 1st three books give no more details than what we know if so far from the Original Series. The fun facts were the visuals in the book. This is more like a collectable book and if you don't want to be spoiled by the Original Series, do not read this until you have finished them.
Will wait to see more about the not so well known Characters like: Luna and Dumbledore. See if we get more insights than what the Series gave us.
This little book is absolute magic! The Pocket Potter: Hermione Granger is everything a Harry Potter fan could want in a character guide. It’s beautifully illustrated, packed with fun facts, and perfectly captures why Hermione is the true hero of the wizarding world. From her first day at Hogwarts to her clever spells, her loyalty, and her bravery—every page celebrates the brightest witch of her age.
People calling the Pocket Potter: Hermione Granger book a “cash grab” clearly haven’t read it. Hermione would be the first to remind them that knowledge is priceless, illustrations are delightful, and if you’re going to spend money on something, it may as well be a cute little book that celebrates the brightest witch of her age. (Besides, I’ve seen worse cash grabs… like the Marauder’s Map socks that fall apart after one wash.)
What I love most is that it’s great for all ages—whether you’re introducing a younger reader to the wizarding world or you’ve already read the series a dozen times, this pocket-sized gem will make you smile. It’s whimsical, nostalgic, and a joy to flip through. Definitely not a “cash grab,” but a sweet tribute to one of the most beloved characters ever created. Collecting these feels like a must for any true Potterhead!
Hermione Granger’s Pocket Potters is such a sweet little tribute to one of the best characters in the entire Harry Potter series. It feels like a tiny celebration of her brilliance, bravery, and heart that you can keep with you anytime you need a dose of Hermione energy.
The illustrations are absolutely adorable and capture her personality perfectly—from her love of books and rules to her fierce loyalty and quiet strength. Every page made me smile because it reminded me why Hermione has always been such an inspiring character.
I loved how this one highlights her intelligence, courage, and growth throughout the series. It’s a wonderful reminder that being smart, determined, and unapologetically yourself is powerful. It truly feels like a love letter to everything Hermione stands for.
This is a must-have for any Hermione fan and a perfect little collectible for Potterheads. Cute, magical, and full of heart—just like her.
The illustrations were good in this one, better than the other 2 books. Similar organization to the other books, with memories and quotes from the other characters at the end.
Learned some new things and emphasized what I already knew about Hermione.
Interesting that it doesn't mention the romance between her and Ron in the last book.
I didn't know that her pet, Crookshanks, was 1/2 Kneazle. Thought it was a cat.
It's good there was a section on mishaps, even perfect studious clever Hermione messes up occasionally.
Nice section on spells.
I recommend reading this after reading all the books as otherwise there's spoilers. This is best used as a refresher or fun extra.
Každá z týchto knižiek sa venuje jednej obľúbenej postave zo sveta čarodejníkov a prostredníctvom krátkych textov a nádherných ilustrácií približuje ich príbehy, vlastnosti a zaujímavosti.
Super cute. I really like the illustrations. The book is comprised of facts from the books, including quotes said by Hermione and about her. It's nothing new. I had thought we would get some new information about characters. Their pasts, futures, side quests we weren't privy to. Some leaky cauldron tea if you will. But it's nothing like that. If you've read the books, you know everything here already.
I chose this book because Hermione is my favorite HP character. I enjoyed the cute drawings. But I was disappointed with the words. All of them except two pages are taken out of context. I read the original books years ago and expected this one to be more helpful. I will not be wasting my time with any more Pocket Potters.
I read this on a kindle. I would not recommend reading this on a kindle; especially if it is one with no colour display abilities. Despite that, this book is a fun little read, bite sized with great illustrations (that likely would be better in colour) and probably a great starting point for kids.
This is a cool and clever way to introduce young readers to the wizards and witches in the original books or to refresh the memories of former readers. Hermione is the third in the series, with the 32 pages covering her entire life up to the final year at Hogwarts. The book is filled with colorful illustrations and pictures with accompanying text at grade level. Excellent series!
The front cover shows Hermione with a book, making my imagination run wild. What if Hermione was reading about me while I was reading about her? That would truly be magical.
A summary of Hermione's life at Hogwarts told in short paragraph format for middle grade readers. We see various areas of her life and how she grew and learned while there.
