Hannah is starting to become suspicious about her husband Max, his personality has changed for the worse, even snapping at their daughter Poppy, and he’s constantly late home from work. As Hannah cooks a meal in anticipation of Max arriving home, a news report says a young woman has been found murdered at the River Walk Hotel, very close to their home, and when Hannah discovers a key card for that hotel in Max’s suit pocket, she can no longer ignore his strange behaviour - is Max not only cheating on her, but is he also a murderer?
This was a great read, with some characters on whom the finger of suspicion falls, as they’re not quite as straightforward as they would like us to think. This was a page turner in every sense, the writing was crisp, the storyline was gripping, and the characters (though not always likeable ) were completely believable, and there were so many twists and turns, that it’s akin to a roller coaster ride. Furthermore, the local fish market must have run out of red herrings - with Kathryn Croft having used crate loads, with great success it has to be said. Recommended!
*Thank you to Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for an honest unbiased review *
I finished this last night. After finishing, I was a little perturbed that I invested the time to read it.
Alice has been found murdered in a hotel walking distance from Hannah and her husband, Max’s home. Max looks guilty as hell after Hannah discovers a room key card in his coat pocket from that exact same hotel. Max has been coming home late and Hannah already feels things just aren’t right between the two. Did Max do it? Why was he even there?
This started out strong. I was looking for answers myself. We were traveling a little bit yesterday and I brought my IPad to get through as much as I could. When we got home, I quickly devoured the rest.
What I liked
- It started off pretty darn suspenseful
- Several characters appeared to be the culprit
- Hannah was great at telling lies and still trying to be a good mother to her daughter, Poppy
What I didn’t like
- It got terribly slow in the middle 30%-60%
- Some of these characters told unforgivable lies (IMO) and Hannah just forgives them like it’s nothing. Wth
- I’ll elaborate on a terrible execution……..
The last 20% or 15% of the book became a clusterfk! We get told, as in someone confesses to the horrible crime and then it’s just like those infomercials ‘But wait! There’s more!’ Just kidding! This person is really the killer. No wait! It’s really this person. What in tarnation? The author changed the reveal on us several times. Oh man, then the silly confession 😳. I absolutely cannot stand confession endings. Then……. Hannah just forgives several people who shouldn’t even be back in her life. What the actual hell. Just NO!
I feel the execution was done poorly. Everything I read became horribly unbelievable. Ruined it for me. I’m baffled why this has such a high average rating. If you enjoyed this one, I’m happy you did. It was unfortunately too ridiculous for me at the wrap up.
I’d like to thank Bookouture, NetGalley, and Kathryn Croft was an ARC. All opinions are my own. Publication date January 26, 2024
Secrets and lies are the name of the game in this gripping and twist filled thriller from Kathryn Croft! The Girl in Room 12 kept me on my toes and turning the pages. Who can be trusted?? That is the question. The only thing that is certain is that The Girl in Room 12 is dead!
The local news has reported that a woman named Alice was found dead in a room at the River Walk Hotel. The same hotel that makes the room key card that Hannah has found in her husband, Max's pocket. How did he get the card? Does he know this woman? He has been distant and testy lately, is he having an affair? Is he a killer? Is her mind jumping to all the wrong conclusions? Max denies knowing the woman, but Hannah knows that something isn't right and sets out to get some answers.
I enjoyed the mystery of this book and the well thought out plot. Croft created an interesting group of characters who had distinct personalities and relationships with Hannah and/or Max. I wondered throughout who could be trusted and who was telling the truth. There are several characters who had me wondering if they were responsible for Alice's death. I did my best to figure out whodunit. At times I thought it could be various people. Who amongst them would want Alice dead and why? Poor Hannah went through the ringer with feelings of doubt, grief, loss, anger, betrayal, anxiety, and acceptance.
As the book progressed, I enjoyed the mounting sense of tension and danger that came into play. Was Hannah getting herself into danger? Would she learn the truth? I had to know! I found this to be a gripping and hard to put down book.
Well written, well thought out, entertaining, gripping and tense!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Girl in Room 12 is a new suspense novel written by Kathryn Croft, an author I found via NetGalley last year. A wife worries that her husband is hiding something, then she discovers a hotel key card in his pocket... it happens to belong to a woman who was murdered a few days earlier. Soon after, the husband is attacked and put into the hospital. He's angry, arrogant, and difficult. What's a wife to do? She goes on a mission to discover the truth, involving her best friend and an employee at her bookstore. Plus, a friend of the victim's enters the wife's orbit, and things take a very confusing turn. For the most part, I enjoyed this book... trying to unravel the clues and guess what was going on. I figured most of the plot out, as it could've only gone 2 or 3 ways. But there was an extra surprise which was well placed but not super plausible. It made for good drama but ultimately felt too contrived. I'm not a fan of the killer changing multiple times in the last few chapters, as it messes a reader's ability to process clues quickly and make an educated guess. Entertaining but also frustrating. That said, I like the author's writing style and character building, so I'll continue to read more from her.
Although she is slightly shaken at it happening so close to home, Hannah Chambers doesn’t give the news about a murdered woman at The River Walk Hotel in Putney, South West London, a second thought.
That is, until she finds a key.
In the pocket of someone close to her.
Now Hannah has to decide what to do with this information; is the girl in room 12 connected to the key holder? How? Why?
Hannah and Max Chambers and their daughter Poppy have the perfect life in Roehampton. Max is a financial analyst for IBM Services, a global technology company and would admittiedly work 24h if he didn’t need sleep. Hannah owns an independent bookshop, Whispering Pages and enjoys time with her best friend, Sarah, partly because Poppy and Sarah’s daughter, Ivy, have become inseparable.
Finding the key changes everything. A little sleuthing uncovers a connection between Alice Hughes, the girl in room 12, and someone close to Hannah. It doesn’t take long for Hannah’s world to be skewed and paranoia set in … before long, Hannah’s life resembles little of the perfection it once did.
What a ride! I absolutely loved not knowing what was going on and not knowing who to believe. Every single character was unreliable.
Uncovering the murderer and the reason is central to the book, but it’s also about: ✔️what happens when we feel we are losing control ✔️the importance of listening to that ‘gut feeling’ ✔️making good choices ✔️forgiveness; of ourselves and others ✔️understanding that good people make mistakes ✔️the power of a united front ✔️second chances ✔️placing importance on our personal safety ✔️and what we’ll do for our children
Katherine Croft writes fantastic psychological thrillers and I’m now a huge fan.
I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Lies, betrayal, and countless secrets play a major role in the lives of Hannah and Max. Could Max be a murderer? Hannah is determined to uncover the connection between her husband, Max, and a dead woman, Alice. Who was this a mysterious woman and did she know Max? “ When someone dies, it's like you don't want to see any bad in them. And none of us are saints, are we?” I was completely immersed in Hannah’s struggle to unlock the mystery of the girl in room 12. As soon as I thought I knew where the story was going, an unexpected twist would occur leading the plot in a surprising direction. This thriller is unpredictable, original, and extremely addictive. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.
Always a favourite author of mine, Kathryn Croft has produced another great book.
Hannah is married to Max and they have a five year old daughter Poppy. Hannah suspects that Max may be up to no good, he is continually coming home late from work. He says it is because his job as a financial analyst is so high pressured that he has to work long hours but Hannah has doubts this is all that is going on. Hannah owns a book shop that has been passed down to her by her mother and she loves it, when she is not looking after Poppy which is a full time job on its own due to Max’s lack of involvement, this is her happy place.
While watching the news one night there is a headline about a young woman who has been found killed in a hotel room quite close to where they live. She then finds a key card in Max’s trousers from the River Walk Hotel, the same hotel the girl has been found dead in. This sets Hannah off on her own investigation, for some reason the young woman’s name seems familiar to her and Hannah now believes that Max may have some involvement with this young woman.
There is a great cast of characters who each bring something to the story creating an environment that will intrigue the reader. Lies and secrets are always present and Hannah will have to work hard to find out the truth. Even strong friendships will be questioned and tested as Hannah tries to unfold her husband’s part in this mess and she will discover that things are not as she thought they were.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions are my own.
Book Title: The Girl in Room 12 Author: Kathryn Croft Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Psychological Thriller Pub Date: January 26, 2024 My Rating: 4.4 Stars Pages: 365
This blurb got my attention ~ My husband was the last person to see the girl in room 12. But did he kill her?
Hannah Chambers and her husband live in the small village of Putney, South West London. They have a five year old little girl, Poppy. Hannah is the owner of an independent bookshop “Whispering Pages”. Max is a financial analyst for a global tech company. However-Hannah has concerns as Max is not the same – ~ He has been short with Poppy, as well as always being at work and coming home later than usual. He has worked in high-stress jobs since they met but something is different now!
One evening after dinner, Hannah is scrolling her phone and sees a news item from the local Putney community page regarding a young woman’s body found at the River Walk Hotel. She clicks for more details and sees a photo of the young woman; Alice Hughes, a personal trainer. As Hannah views the photo she finds something familiar but not sure where she may have seen Alice.
Later that evening, Max is on the phone as Hannah is getting ready for bed. She sees his suit on the bed and decides she’ll take it to the cleaners as she is clearing his pockets, she find a key card with an embossed logo of the River Walk Hotel!
Now the story gets REALLY interesting.
I always enjoy the challenge of a psychological thriller I know to expect twists and turns! I know to be suspicious of everyone! I know there will be secrets! I know that more than likely the most obvious person didn’t do it!
Okay I did all four! I sort of knew whodunit ~ after all I suspect everyone. Did I guess what was going on? Nope!!! Near the end of this story I found my mind going in circles trying to figure things out!
I was looking forward to reading the ‘Author’s Note’ as I was so curious the motivation for this story. In Kathryn Croft’s - ”A Letter from Kathryn’ She tells that she hope’s she is still managing to create suspense with shocks and twists. She loved writing this story –states it took her in directions she hadn’t foreseen and does love then that happens.
I thought Aww now I know why it seemed there were so many “What Ifs?
This truly was a wild ride - similar to a trip down San Francisco’s Lombard Street with the 8 hairpin turns!
I read Ms. Croft’s The Suspect at first I thought it was okay and then Wow! I ended up really liking it. So I went into this with somewhat the same anticipation.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for January 26, 2024
Hannah and Max have a little girl Poppy. Hannah has noticed that Max has been distant and working very late but he is a devoted dad to Poppy.
A young woman is found in Rive Walk Hotel. Her name is Alice and speculation and rumors are running rampant on why she was in a hotel when she lived close by!
Adding to the mystery Hannah finds a key to the hotel in her husband’s jacket. Could he be having an affair?
Kroft always draws me in with her novels and very detailed characters! This plot was so unique, unexpected and fun to its heart pounding and unexpected conclusion.
Thank you Bookouture. This novel is out January 26, 2024. #thegirlinroomtwelve, #kathryncroft, #bookouture, #bookstagram, #stamperlady50, #booksconnectus
I really wanted to give this more stars. This started out so good, and I was enjoying it so much, but it kept going. And going. And going.... finally I skipped ahead a couple chapters, and it still hadn't advanced that much. so I kept skipping further and further ahead. Finally just read the last couple chapters to get a synopsis of the ending. This was just my personal finding with the book, and I do give a star rating to everything I read simply for my own records. That way I can see which authors I always rate very high, which ones are a mixed bag for me, etc. So take this review with a grain of salt, please.
This is a great book! It is well written with developed characters! There are many little twists that seem to go well with the flow of this book! I felt a range of emotions from sadness, anger, disappointment and many more! That is a measure of a good book. And I was so absorbed in the characters that I didn’t want it to end! I have read other books by this author and will continue to seek her out! What a gripping, thoroughly enjoyable read!
The girl in room 12 is another addictive read from the author. I have been following her from her very first book and she never disappoints. Hannah and Max are married and have a little girl called Poppy. Hannah owns her own bookshop and Max has a well-paid job. But recently he has been coming home late when Poppy is due to go to bed and you never knows what mood he is in, which annoys Hannah. When Heather picks up Max’s suit off the floor. She finds a key card from the River Walk hotel. The same hotel that she heard recently on the news that a woman called Alice was murdered. Is Max having an affair and was he involved in killing Alice. The woman who the Police has just found the body. Is her own life in danger? The is another multi-layered tense thriller from the author. Which I enjoyed but in certain times it did drag on a bit. But I am glad I kept at it. This is a great read that I kept me guessing right up to the end. 4 stars from me.
This was a definite one session read for me - staying up late, I just wanted to know where it was going to go as there were so many plausible outcomes and every one had a story to tell and who to trust. Just loved it.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and bookouture but the review is entirely my own
The Girl in Room 12 by Kathryn Croft is a thoroughly compulsive read from a truly addicting author.
Hannah is shocked to hear on the news that a young woman has been murdered at the local River Walk hotel. Her concern increases exponentially, though, when she discovers a key from the hotel in her husband's pocket. Could Max have possibly been involved in Alice's murder and, if so, is her own life now in danger?
This one kept me frantically turning the pages as the narrative expertly weaves itself through a mystery that seems to only intensify with each new development. If you have not yet read a Kathryn Croft novel, this is a great place to start. You are in for a treat. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
My Review: Loved!!!!! I stayed up all night reading this one. I just couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what happened next and why otherwise I couldn’t go to sleep. I would’ve been up all night thinking about it. I want to start off by saying that I’ve read almost every single book by this author and she still surprises me. I did not see that ending coming not in a million years. I was so shocked. You never know what someone is capable of when they feel cornered like a rat. So I knew something was off about a few of the characters in this book the entire time. I just couldn’t put my finger on which ones though. When I found out I was left totally speechless. It’s always the nice ones you have to worry about. Along with the characters I thought the plot was great too. It kept me entertained and not knowing who or what to trust. I love that. Kathryn Croft is one of my favorite authors and this proved why. I can’t say enough good things about her books and I can’t wait for the next one to come out.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks to NetGalley and Book Outure for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Girl in Room 12 by Kathryn Croft. This book started out strong and kept me reading. It lost some of my enthusiasm in the middle for a bit and then again at the end. The end had too much swirling around and tried to add in many new details. It became a mass confessional and it just seemed to be a whole new story. It was entertaining and I would still recommend it to others. I gave it a 4 star rating.
THE GIRL IN ROOM 12 is another great book from expert thriller writer, Kathryn Croft. I was immediately drawn to the character of Hannah and rooting for her to find out the truth about her husband, Max. There are plenty of secrets to be revealed here and clearly not everyone can be trusted. This one kept me up late because I was too engrossed in the mystery to sleep! The ending was just perfect and I would recommend this book to all thriller/mystery fans.
Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.
This review will be shared to my Instagram (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
I absolutely loved the writing style of this author. While it was a bit slow at times, I was engaged until the end !! I didn't see those twists coming one after the other like that. Great read !
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
I love this Authors books never. disappoints always an addictive read. Hannah has the perfect life married to Max they have a daughter Poppy. She owns her own little bookshop. Max has a good job. but Max now is not the man she married she does not know when he is coming home or what mood he be in and then a woman is found murdered in a hotel room 12.not far from their home. Hannah goes looking in his pockets and find a key the same room that the woman was killed in.it gets where Hannah can't trust anyone a very addictive read.
This was one where it felt like someone's old & beloved clunker car that you hoped & prayed would get you from point A to B but only took a few steps before it ran out of gas and went to car heaven - aka the dumpster pit. 🤦♀️
Started out very interesting only to become boring & ridiculous. One star only for the first few pages. DNF.
I loved this book! Written from Hannah's perspective, we only know what she knows as information gets revealed. She has suspicions when she finds a hotel key card in her husband's suit pocket for a local hotel where a woman has been found murdered. Could he be involved, but if not then what is the explanation for the key card? And is her new acquaintance telling the whole truth?
Brilliantly crafted to keep you guessing all the way through. The only downside for me was Certainly not enough to rate it less than 5 stars.
I'd recommend this to anyone, especially if you have Kindle Unlimited.
This was a new author for me to listen to and one I will be following. I loved this book, it had everything and had me hooked throughout. I loved the characters and found the book an easy listen. I thought I had worked it out but clearly didn’t and the ending was a surprise. Would recommend.
