A must-read for every patient, parent, physician, and person.

If you’re reading this, you know someone with an eating disorder. As this book cites, 8% of women and 2% of men will have an eating disorder in their lives, and untold more are undernourished enough to suffer significant medical and psychosocial consequences. So yes, you know an undernourished person.

This book is for every one of us, whether we are a person with disordered eating, a clinician who works with such patients, or simply a person who wishes to be supportive of their fellow humans.

The first edition of this book is the reason why I finally believed I was “sick enough” and sought treatment for a decades-old eating disorder, and I believe in the book’s message so much that I reached out to every clinician I currently see (from neuroopthamologist to therapist to dietitian and even periodontist) to offer to give them a copy of this latest edition. That’s how strongly I believe that every healthcare provider should have this book in their practice.

Evangelism aside, this is the book I’d recommend most regarding eating disorders because it is comprehensive and brimming with information; it is both approachable and assumes no previous knowledge, and yet it does not condescend and quickly builds utility for even experts in the field. Dr. Gaudiani takes great care to be respectful of her readers, and she delivers her message with compassion and understanding.

I wish every person with an eating disorder, or who suffers the effects from malnutrition, could be a patient at the Gaudiani Clinic. Maybe when more healthcare providers read this book, we can build a better, more weight-inclusive world where stigma based on body shape and size no longer affect how we treat our patients, our loved ones, or our selves.

If you could only pick one resource to help you understand the medical issues and nuances in the eating disorder population, Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani has delivered it in Sick Enough, Second Edition. Dr. Gaudiani’s medical expertise, combined with the necessary compassion and empathy to effectively treat these psychologically and medically complex illnesses, makes this book an imperative addition to an eating disorder clinician’s, patient’s or loved one’s library.

A must read for any clinician - therapists, dietitians, psych providers, medical providers, PCPs, social workers, and even OT/PT - to learn more about eating disorders and undernourishment. I deeply value the nuance and expertise Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani brings to our field. I appreciate her additions on chronic illnesses, neurodiversity, and severe and enduring eating disorders.
