(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Amazon Publishing and Netgalley.)

“I would do anything for you, my princess, you know this. But I cannot let you leave,” he whispered, leaning in closer. “Your soul belongs to me.”

This was an enjoyable story, but I did get very confused and bored at points.

Khara was a strong character, and she seemed to be willing to do anything to get what she wanted, especially when it was her brothers in danger.

“What had originally been a mission to return home and acquire the knowledge of my past quickly transformed into one of saving Drew at any and all costs.”

The storyline in this was okay, but I did get very bored and confused at points. I’m not sure why, but I found this quite difficult to follow, I found the first book a bit difficult to understand as well though so I might just not be suited to this author’s writing style.

“Like angering a dark one.” He punctuated his statement by standing and snapping his wings wide.
“Is that what I have done?” I asked, uncurling from my seated position to stand against him.
“Not yet…”
I leaned in closer to him.
“Then I shall try harder next time.”

The ending to this was okay, but once again I found myself a bit confused. The story was enjoyable overall though.
6.25 out of 10

“You will not die,” he said, barely restraining the anger that clearly coursed through him as well. “But as your father has told you before, there are fates worse than death.”

I almost didn't even pick up Unseen. After Unborn I was well and ready to give up on the series, but then I thought about the boys (brothers) in the books and I felt an inkling of curiosity. So I said fuck it and went ahead and picked this one up, going against my better judgment. Unseen tries to improve on Unborn, and it really takes to heart things that were wrong with the previous title and tries to fix them, but then how come it still felt like it fell flat? Maybe this series, this story overall, just isn't for me. I still couldn't stand the "romantic" interest (actually, if it is even possible, I hated him even MORE in this title), I felt like for most of the book NOTHING was happening and we were just going round and round looking for answers no one was willing to provide, and I got to see little of the characters I loved and a lot of the characters I disliked in the previous novel. Which made for an overall bland and unexciting reading experience.

So after the mess of an ending that was Unborn Khara loses all sense and follows Oz into the Underworld to quote unquote "look for answers about her origins". But pretty much she gets to the Underworld and everybody brushes her off. Nobody wants to give her answers, they all just want to use her for their own purposes. Greed, revenge, sexual frustration, Khara seems to be in high demand as an object. Nobody wants to give her the light of day until they need something from her. Not even Oz. Specially Oz.

So Khara goes to the Underworld and she pretty much spends most of the book walking round and round in these never ending corridors that seem to be the Underworld's living quarters. Because this is how it is described. As never ending corridors. No real description is given, you take it or leave it. Make something up in your mind and hopefully it sticks.

I personally liked to imagined the Underworld as if it was Castle Oblivion from Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

description

I don't necessarily know why, but since so little was described in terms of setting I guess I just grasped at straws and came up with something that felt familiar. An endless stream of corridors, with little to no distinctions.

The story is much like the corridors, and endless quest to look for answers that keeps going and going with no answers on sight. The worst part of this is that you get to experience this with Oz right behind you.

"Same old ego-driven asshole."
"No," Oz countered. "Not the same ego-driven asshole. An even bigger one. One that can destroy you far more efficiently than before."

They keep talking about Oz and the power of the "Dark Ones" but other than some very big talk I saw nothing to back this up. But other than an attitude upgrade (or is it downgrade?) Oz just seems to be the same prick with double the confidence. He gets tiresome quick, his threats, his "you have to trust me just CAUSE I SAY SO", his machismo... I sincerely hate him as a character. Every time I think of him it makes me want to hit something, and if I have to result to violence well then all hope is lost.

description

"He stepped back from me enough to rake his eyes over my body as though he was trying to memorize it. As though he thought he might never see it again."

Hey there buddy, my eyes are up here.

Every other sentence allures to sex, which makes Unseen seem like Erotica for the NA crowd, with supernatural creatures! I want to be clear as to what I am reading (genre wise) so I don't create expectations. If I am told I am getting this (erotica) then I expect it and all the rest doesn't seem as bad.

"I have to say that I find it mildly amusing that you are now so dependent on these feelings of yours. This from the girl who formerly felt nothing? I cannot help but be skeptical of this new dependence,"

Before I criticized Khara because she seemed like an empty vessel. In fact, a lot of reviewers did this because she was utterly empty of emotions. Now in Unseen everybody (and by everybody I mean the characters) criticize her for being full of emotion. Although, I barely see it. Having the characters constantly refer to her "emotions" does not make for an emotional character, it just makes me annoyed. There is a difference between telling a reader, and showing a reader.

"I was not devoid of all emotion when we met," I countered. "There was a barely perceptible shift in me when I met my brothers, as if my being had finally found a place that it belonged to. I would not have fought to stay there is that had not been the case."

And she said this with a deadpan face and tone.

description

There was one point in the novel that Khara might have woken up completely naked next to a certain fellow (after he kind of punched her out of commission) and she didn't even throw a fit. After that I was dooone with the "romance", and lost a bit of respect for Khara. I would have had him HAVE IT. I would have KICKED HIS ASS. She didn't even argue! She was just like, "why did you do this?", explanation was given, "okay". If it was me, the situation might have gotten a little like this: "YOU DID WHAT?"

description

Overall Unseen was just not for me. In fact, the whole series might just not be for me. I gave it a second try and it just didn't work out. It is not you it's me? Although, I do think it is you so let's just agree to part ways amicably.

PS; OZ needs to die. Bring back the brothers for reals as necessary characters; Khara is doing better, keep it up girl. Please OZ, stop calling Khara "new girl", it is quite annoying.

Unseen was simply awesome, it picks up right after Unborn leaves off which helps you quickly transition right back into the story. While Unborn had set the stage, Unseen takes Khara back to the Underworld where she grew up and reunites her with her adoptive father Hades. However, her time in the Underworld isn't what she was expecting it to be, an her new status has made her even more of a walking target for not only the evil lurking in the Underworld, but also for those she considered family.

I LOVED the relationship between Khara and Oz in this book, the tension between them really helped to set the mood for the rest of the story. Like before there's still a lot of sexual tension between Khara and Oz, but now something else is hanging between the two of them, Khara just hasn't figured it out yet. Oz has "upgraded" from fallen to dark one as well, because of this he's pretty much death walking. He's also designated himself as Khara's personal protector and decision maker, even if she doesn't agree. I stated in the last book that Khara isn't TSTL, thankfully this still holds true in this story. I would actually say she's evolved into a better person perhaps, with more emotions and concern for her family.

Honestly, from where the first book was heading and the transition into this book I really didn't see the angle in this book until it was nearly finished. I was surprised and delighted when the author decided to take a more unique route with how this story was going to unfold. The evil guys I expected to play a major part in this book didn't, a whole new set of baddies is prowling, but you'll never guess who it is till it's too late.

It's pretty much obvious I've fallen in love with this new series, even though it is an urban fantasy and has remained such. I enjoyed this story, I think it's a bit different from most UF series, I feel its more unique and the characters themselves stand out more so than others in this genre. I'd recommend this story to others, you do need to read the first book, otherwise you're just not gonna get it.

For the sake of full disclose: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I would like to think that hasn’t impacted in any way on my review or my rating.

Khara returns to the Underworld the way she left it, on the wings on a Dark One. And although this particular Dark One is not an unknown, his motives are… for the most part. But the sad part is that he might just be less dangerous to Khara’s safety than other power players who seek to acquire Khara – a powerful anomaly – for the sake of their own agendas. Like Deimos and his kind or Oz’s dark brethren.

Khara is seeking answers regarding her ancestry and her missing mother, but upon her return to her adopted home, she finds an Underworld in upheaval, where power is shifting and the players normally are as treacherous as one would expect from beings who reside in this dark supernatural prison of the dead.

The thing I like about this series is how seamlessly the author blends ancient Greek mythology with modern day America. It would be easy to get lost somewhere in the process, Natusch does not. In Natusch’s world, it’s easy to understand – and accept – how Greek mythology, ancient gods and wood nymphs could co-exist with the Abrahamic God, and current ruler of the world.

The thing I like the most about this series I Khara’s relationship to the men in her life. They are all so different, but highlight just how much Khara has evolved from a being incapable of emotions to one that is able to empathize and to love. There’s Oz, who, for all intents and purposes should be distrusted, but who, despite his protestations, just might defy the norms of the Dark Ones, just as he did as a fallen angel. He’s just too self serving and rebellious to fit any mold… Or so I hope. I find his possessiveness towards Khara… strangely attractive in a dangerous sort of way;-) And then there are her brothers, so different, yet so eager to stand up for a sister they haven’t really known that long. Although that seems to be a trait that also falls naturally for Khara as well. Seeing how they are rewarded after death, doesn’t sit well with her, and ultimately leads her to make a decision that will impact not only one brother in particular, but also her relationship with her father, and their bond might not be strong enough to endure her actions. Speaking of the death god himself: I enjoyed getting to know Hades as more than the ruler of the Underworld. Seeing him as a doting father, was a treat, although his anger was heartbreaking to witness. I like where this series is headed; Unborn is a great read and I am eagerly anticipating the third installment.

4+ stars.

Khara goes back to the Underworld, with the help of Oz, to get some answers about her mother. But no one seems willing to tell her much of anything. Hades realm seems to be falling apart and Khara is finding it hard to get anyone to listen to her. When some of her brothers arrive in the Underworld looking for her, Khara knows she is running out of time to find the answers, but when tragedy befalls someone she cares for, her mission changes to righting the terrible wrong and saving his soul.

In this edition, Khara is still almost robotic but less so than the first. She shows a bot more emotion but I still found it hard ot connect to her. She is extremely reckless in Unseen and doesn't heed anyones warnings, she just keeps doing what she wants to get the answers she wants. That is until all of a sudden her mission changes, which I found quite weird to be honest. She was so focused on one thing and suddenly the book took a turn and felt like a different story. I didn't think the plot flowed at all.

Once again the plot plods along until the end. This series had so much potential but it just falls flat. The emotionless MC and the telling rather than showing make for a boring read at times. That's not to say that the whole book is boring because it's not. The bit of action we see is good but there's just not enough.

There was one section that I was really confused about and that's the part with the Dark Ones. I'm still not sure what or why they came!! If anyone has read it and wants to chime up and let me know then please do!!

Talking of Dark Ones, we still don't get a sense of what they are. There is too much unanswered things in the books for my liking.

I know this is quite a negative review but I did like this overall. It kept me reading, which is always a plus. I'm curious enough to keep reading the series but I need more from these books!! The brothers are the best thing about the books. Their different personalities and comic antics bring a refreshing aspect to the book and I hope they play a bigger part in the next book!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.

I don't know where to start...Unseen is amazing! Amber Lynn Natusch has done it again! She is one hell of a storyteller and world builder. While all of her books are unique and excellent in all ways, the Unborn series really stands out. It is different from every other book out there, in that it is everything an epic series should be! From Greek mythology to modern day ass kicking, gods and goddesses to angels and Dark Ones, unsavory paranormal creatures, and the defending hero's that belong to a brotherhood. Unseen was definitely "born" of genius!

Khara has returned to the Underworld seeking answers on who and what she is. With the help of Oz, a newly turned Dark One, she must find out why so many secrets have been kept from her. While trying to navigate the circle of lies and deception surrounding her she finds all is not well in hell. Along her journey Khara comes across the most fearsome people in the Underworld and must decide who she can and can not trust. However, even those she believes are on her side are not what they seem. As Oz spirals deeper into darkness, Hades starts to lose control of the Underworld, and Khara and her brothers suffer a devastating loss, Khara realizes her answers must go on the back burner. For she must save those she holds dearest.

Unseen is action packed and kickass. Khara has come a long way in dealing with her never before had, emotions. As she starts to gain her powers, born to all the PC, we get to see a different side of her. Oz is as frustrating as ever, but ooh so sexy as always. He to is going through his own changes throughout Unseen. But seriously...can they hook up already!?! The brothers are all in Unseen as well. As hot, protective, and entertaining as ever! I really enjoyed this book and I am so excited to see what happens next! I would recommend this book to everyone! (If you don't like it, you have issues haha)

"Whispers in the darkness, From shadows on the wall, telling of his wicked fate, new echo through the hall. The dead will soon be rising; the mighty one doth pall. The dead will soon be rising to see his kingdom fall."

And that's all you are getting out me for this review. LOL Kidding

Amber takes right back to where Unborn ended and throws us right into Khara's conudrum on trying to figure out who she is and what she is.

Dropping back into the Underworld with a Dark One definitely doesn't bring out the "Welcome Home" banners from Hades, Khara's adoptive father. However - she is his princess and loves her undoubtedly. While there, Khara gets to know a few others close to her father, especially Persephone. But as she is trying to learn more about herself, Khara stumbles across other problems that are arising.

Khara is slowly coming into her own and learning who to trust and that things were not always as she thought. However as she goes about figuring out answers to her questions, she is testing the limits of not only her father, but Oz. And we never know what Oz is up to because he only does what he feels is best for himself. Everyone else is a pawn in his game. But when it comes to Khara and Oz - everything is complete chaos.

"Things have changed. You are not what you were then."

Amber easily brings in the different plots together, as one can not be without the other. And yet, you are never once confused in the least. If anything, you find yourself getting more submerged into the story and eagerly awaiting the outcome. And just when you think you know what is going to happen - shit gets even more enthralling!!!

Unseen is just that - UNSEEN - nothing is predictable. And that is exactly why this book rocks!!

Bring on the next book - I need more!!!!

Book two
Khara returns home to see her father Hades along with Oz who took her there. When Hades sees Khara he thinks she is dead, but alas no she is not (thank god!) So Khara discovers that Hades is having trouble, or so she is told. Her father tells her some things about her mother, but I have a feeling that Oz knows the answers, although he won't tell her. Hades does not want Oz with Khara at all! (I am thinking why? also...who is this Oz?? I mean don’t get me wrong I really like this character totally into the demon/angel thing! I just can’t wait to learn more about this guy!) Oz….*sighs….he kills me with his “I CAME FOR YOU” yeah, it’s like that! And …...Oh hell yes he did come for her!!!

As Khara tries to find answers to all her questions about her mother and who she is, she is caught in a web by no other than Persephone, somehow Persephone convinces Khara that she needs to help her father (*ugh--insert NOOO!!! DON’T!!) ok let me explain that; if you read Caged you all know who/what I am talking about. If you haven’t let's just say that Persephone is an opportunist and she is ruthless. LIES LIES LIES!!! Never believe or trust that one!

Khara gets herself in some deep s**t here! She still has to deal with Deimos, that one well ok so I know he is all bad and stuff but, what if there is another angel to him? Like what if there is more to him then we are seeing here? I don’t know just wanted to throw that in the mix! Ok so Khara has new things going on with her and her abilities are still developing I think she will be a force to be reckoned with. I can NOT wait till book 3, you are killing me here….slowly…….and I think I like it!! lol…..ok peeps go!!! go get this now!!!

GAWDDAMMIT, NATUSCH! I officially trust NO ONE in this series. lol No one, I tell you!!!

UNSEEN is the second installment in the new Unborn series by Amber Lynn Natusch. I recently reviewed the first book in the series and fell in love with it. Although it’s a spin-off of the Caged series, it couldn’t possibly be more different. It’s gritty. It’s dark. It has a bad habit of pissing me off.

I dont say that as a bad thing. Quite the contrary. Natusch is rather famous for her 1 question answered/5 questions added method of laying out a series and UNSEEN is no exception.

Unborn left off with a LOT of questions unanswered and Unseen wasted no time in diving right into the thick of things to try to solve a few of the many mysteries we were left holding. Oh, and answers you will get, my friends. Lots of them. A few that will blow your frikkin mind.

As mentioned in my review of Unborn, the series, much more so than the Caged series, intermingles urban fantasy with ancient Greek mythos. The cast you will meet in UNSEEN is unlike anything she’s every written. I wont get into who you’re going to meet because spoilers and all that. I don’t want to ruin the book for you and I think the trip through Greek mythology is half the fun of this series.

In my review of Unborn, I had stressed how different this series is from Caged and UNSEEN really seemed like it set out to prove that point. UNSEEN takes us on a journey through the Underworld, and with the exception of Sean’s name thrown out a few times and the obvious involvement of the Detroit PC boys, you’ll go through UNSEEN with just the tiniest of notions that this book is somehow related to the Caged series. UNSEEN is the book that will make you forget about it’s parent series.

Where Unborn was the hot new guy at school, UNSEEN was the tattoo-covered bad boy who would drag you into the janitor’s closet, have his way with you, and slap you on the ass with a wink on his way out. We are now familiar with the cast, so rather than having to spend a lot of time getting to know the main players, the story really had room to unfold and breathe. Not only does your hangover from Unborn ease a bit, but the author has taken the story, tied it up in an unrecognizable knot, and somehow, at the end of the day, the tangles come undone and reveal a perfectly woven story.

The stunner moments in UNSEEN are…ummm….many. One in particular resulted in my emailing the author with a message along the lines of “If ________ is still ______ at the end of this book, you and I are going to have some serious words.” Lucky for her, my fears were put to rest. Well…..sort of. It’s not all unicorns pooping rainbows, but it took a step in a direction toward the sunny side of the street. You know, right before the tornado hit and fucked everything up again.

The mystery of exactly what Khara is goes straight bananas in UNSEEN. If you thought shit was weird with her in Unborn, hold on to your fedoras, my friends, because you’ve got a long bumpy ass road ahead. And, of course, by the end of the book, you’re going to have more questions. I’m sorry to tell you, but it’s true. Prepare for yet another book hangover.

I did see something in this book that was unexpected of our girl Khara. Maybe I just didn’t pick up on it in Unborn, or maybe she was still just too new to the whole emotion thing to bring it to light, but our girl isn’t afraid to use her hot ass to move toward her goals. She dabbles in wielding her sexuality as a weapon in UNSEEN and reveals that she’s no stranger to using her assets as a means to an end. As I said, it was unexpected, but also not unconvincing. The way it is written in and further explained, it works for the story in a way that it wouldn’t have in Unborn, and it shows the reader that we’ve just barely scratched the surface of this girl.

Oz. Oz is a bit of a conundrum. He takes “bad boy” to a whole new level and I spent the majority of this story saying “what in the name of all that is unholy is he up to?!?!?!” Still not entirely sure, but I have a sinking suspicion he’s one of very few actually concerned with Khara’s well-being. I have no clue what is brewing between Khara and Oz, but I can tell you that if those two ever pull the trigger and bones, it’s going to be HOT. Like, really hot. If they ever get pelvic, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be explosive. The tension with these two! Hot, hot, hot.

Deimos. He’s such a dick. I know this is not what he looks like, but I dislike this character so much, every time he has a scene, all I can picture is Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog:

description

And I kind of adore Aery. She’s a fantastic supporting character and I am really hoping to see her become more involved in the main story. She’s spunky and mischievous and she totally reminds me of Alice Cullen from the Twilight books. Not the movies. The books.

Overall, I loved UNSEEN. It’s an excellent sophomore effort and I cant wait to see where the story takes us. The writing is tight. The story is captivating. The characters are beyond fantastic. Truly a great addition to the story.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“I wish Casey were here right now,” he murmured.
“Why is that?”
“Because I do love it when he calls you batshit crazy, and that is precisely what that idea is. Bat. Shit. Crazy.”

“Be careful whose doorstep you lay your loyalty upon.”

In the first book of this series, readers got to see Khara in unfamiliar territory dealing with unfamiliar people. Able to quickly adapt to her situation, a miniscule amount of what made her uniquely Khara came through -- loyalty to those she calls family, strength, and most importantly, a fearlessness that can often be misconstrued as recklessness. In Unseen, all of those traits and more come forth, giving readers a broader scope of her personality and her roots. Khara's newfound ability to feel emotions is not only alien, but it's proving to be a hindrance she didn't foresee.

Despite finding her real family on Earth, Khara still seeks knowledge of her true parentage and what exactly it means for her fate. Having been given cryptic, fleeting information from Oz, Khara knows that the only true answers can be gleaned from the Underworld and her adoptive father, Hades. Gaining answers proves futile and leads to more questions rather than answers. Accompanied by now-Dark Oz, her sworn protector, their knowledge-seeking mission down below turns in to something far more sinister.

This series continues to delight me; as I stated in my review of the previous installment, I absolutely love the character structure Natusch created. Angels, fallen angels, Greek gods and goddesses are all interrelated and walk amongst one another. I also love Natusch's version of the Underworld/Hell, where it's certainly not as one would think. Sure, the bad souls get relegated to the Underworld, but not every bad soul is treated as doomed. There is a special place for unfairly damned souls, a place of resting and peace for the noble ones who really ought to be up top. Hades, King of the Dead, is quite noble himself and definitely not what I expected for the ruler of the Underworld. His relationship with his princess was unexpected and from their interactions, it was hard to understand why Khara was so emotionless prior to meeting her brothers. Hades isn't devoid of emotion, quite the opposite actually, and I would have thought that some of that would have rubbed off on Khara.

One of the things I loved from the first book, Unborn, was that those who have fallen have a choice: they can decide whether to remain Light or choose to become Dark. Oz, unsurprisingly, is now a Dark One. What does surprise me is that despite his roughness, his projection that he is selfish and disturbed, something tells me that's a show.

"I am all that you think I am and worse. Every assumption you've ever had about me is right. If you're searching for even an ounce of redemption in me, your effort is in vain. There is nothing left to save, new girl."

Many times, his actions betray his words and his protectiveness towards Khara belies his big talk. Aside from the fact that he chose Dark, it seems that all of the Light isn't completely gone from within dear Ozereus. That's not to say he's sweet -- far from it, actually. He's like the Fallen Oz, with a sharper, more abrasive edge, but there is still something within him that isn't complete and total darkness, specifically when it comes to Khara.

"Some beings are so suited for one another that their call will be answered, no matter what divides them -- what stands in their way. It defies all rules. All natural law."

The wait for the next book is going to be pure torture; betrayal has turned the Underworld upside down and the aftermath is pure chaos. Where that leaves Hades and his Kingdom, aside from an uproar, is anyone's guess. As with the previous book, I also recommend this installment for urban fantasy lovers looking for something a little different. A word of caution -- this is one of those series that must be read in order, very important events unfold and bleed over from one installment to the next.

(I received this book from a Goodreads Giveaway.)

*Mentally tries to prepare myself, fails.*

OKAY. I did not like this book. LET ME LIST THE WAYS!

1. It was 90% sexual tension (And not the good kind, on which I will elaborate!) and 10% crap. The plot is so dragged out, I was like JUST GET TO THE POINT ALREADY.

2. Oz (AKA Mr. STD) continued fascination with Khara is unsettling. Let's just say it guys...HE'S A STALKER! He was so deranged (as was Khara, example in a mo) and, well, scary to be honest. I didn't know if he was gonna hit or rape her OR BOTH. At one point he shoves her against a wall, which he has done on numerous occasions, and shoves his erection up against her stomach. WHAT. I didn't need to know that, but thanks anyway.

3. As Khara is being threatened both psychically and sexually, she keeps saying she is frightened and yet, aroused. DERANGED GIRL MEETS DERANGED BOY = MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN GUYS

4.

5.

6.

7.

8. And the vulgar language. Mr. STD so elegantly tells Khara that her recklessness with Deimos will result in Deimos' "dick being shoved deep inside of her.". Thank so much for that Oz. No, really. Thanks.

9. And to put the cherry on top, I HAVE TO READ THE NEXT ONE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS

I absolutely love this series! The characters and their relationship dynamics are so emotional and complicated. There is a lot happening in this second book. Some questions are answered while many more others are unearthed.

Ever mysterious and ever brooding Oz has decided to attach himself to Khara as if he were her shadow. And there are sure to be some fireworks when Hades finds out about this new "arrangement." This installment has a lot of Oz and Khara interaction and the sexual tension is building. There are times when they are mere inches from each other in the heat of a discussion and you keep waiting for someone to make a move. I'm not going to say if it ever happens as that would spoil the book for some but Amber is the queen of sexual tension/frustration with her characters.

I am not sure how I feel about Oz or Persephone and this book didn't help me to decide. I am not sure if I want Khara to be with Oz and I am very leery of Persephone. I think both Oz and Persephone are selfish and I'm not sure if Khara can change this trait. I am in love with Kierson and I wanted (needed) more Kierson in this book. I am seriously looking forward to the next book. If you haven't read the first book of this series, go get it NOW and read it.

I received a free advanced ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Unseen is book 2 in the Unborn series. Khara has returned home and seeks answers to her many questions...

I really didn't enjoy this one as the pace seemed to be too slow and the dialogue's seemed to be a bit too. But when all the action started, I almost started to get back into it but it was too late as I was at the end of the book..!

Overall, I'm not too happy with this one.

Positives: The author did an amazing job with Unseen. This installment proves intriguing & fast paced. The characters continue to show growth. The story is full of twist & the action is nonstop.
Negatives: Cliffhanger ending.
Will I continue the series? Yes

My thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing/47North for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

I got to 32% and a character death really irked me. So I read some less than positive reviews of this book and the third and only other one out there and became disheartened. It seems this isn't a trilogy, it's a series and only three books are available thus far. Also, the MC isn't given ANY information from ANYone, so she CONSTANTLY makes STUPID mistakes that had she the full information, she probably wouldn't have made those mistakes. Also, she, as well as the other characters, are all supposed to be centuries old, yet she does not act like it at ALL. Granted, she never had emotions before, so she is new to all of that, but STILL.

I probably shouldn't have read more reviews, but it did save me from reading the rest of this book and the third and becoming upset. As it is, one of the things I like to do with books that I like, but are heading down a path I don't like, I mentally write my own rest of the story, which I am going to do with this, so it ends well for me.

So, while probably not what the author would like, it works for me, so I'm happy with what I read and am also happy with not reading the rest, if that makes any sense. Does anyone else do that or just me? (Thinks about FanFic where Hermione ends up with Draco, yeah, no, it's not just me, woot!).

So, not a bad book and I would recommend it if you enjoy dark.

Trigger re: dark, there are two main male characters, one of whom is supposed to be the love interest, who physically threaten the MC. It is implied that the main baddie forced himself onto the MC many times, she is TERRIFIED of him and he says he doesn't just want her body, her wants her mind and soul too. So REALLY dark and the "love interest" is little better. Physically, her body "wants" him, but mentally and emotionally she does not. Not an issue for him, so be warned. It's really not cool.

2, I really wish it had more answers and less questions, stars.

I know, I said I wasn't going to continue this series because I was annoyed with the main character lacking any feelings. Perhaps the author read similar reviews before starting to write book 2 because there was an effort to explain WHY Khara was like that...and even an attempt for her to develop a couple of feelings (not a lot). Did it make this book better? Yeeaaaah???? Sort of.

Khara goes to the underworld to learn more about her origins, hoping to get answers from Hades. The smug dark angel, Oz, accompanies her since dark ones are the only ones that can come and go from the underworld and yet Hades has no control over them. Khara begins to find out more about her mother but is easily sidetracked when Persephone (wife of Hades) shows up.

Again, this book has the potential for a good story, but there is something missing in the character development and dialogue. The execution falls short.

Mythology lovers probably like this series, or will like it if they haven’t tried it yet. Unfortunately, I have never been a fan of mythology, and was never taught that much about it in school. Of course I have picked up some about it over the years, but I am not completely comfortable with all the different mythological characters, and who did what. Still I will try my best to review this book without totally screwing up. This is the second in this series, and this one continues the story where the last one left off.

Khara has left earth with Oz, and is now in the Underworld. As she is the adopted daughter of Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, this is her home. Even though she was only gone for about a week to Detroit, now she misses her brothers that she left there. Oz has gone from being Fallen, to now being a Dark One, and Khara is now coming into her all new powers now that her wings have manifested. Her wings are mottled black/white, so is she dark or is she light is the question here. At least that was my take on it. After her trip to Detroit, and getting her wings, she has started feeling emotions. It was just too hard to live forever in the Underworld, and have emotions too. Things are changing in the Underworld, the walls between the baddest of the bad souls, and the rest of the Underworld, are thinning. Pair that with Persephone(Hade’s wife) trying to manipulate Khara, and you have the makings of this story.

Khara’s brothers are back for this story, and since they were my favorites from the last book, that made me happy. Only this time, most of the story takes place in the Undeworld, so her brothers that join her there aren’t exactly happy with Khara not wanting to go back to their home in Detroit. She is there seeking answers to the mysteries that are her life. And then there’s Oz. Now that Oz has become a Dark One, as opposed to Fallen, he comes off as being eviler then before, and that’s because the Dark Ones are evil. But is he really? Khara’s emotions awakening causes her to feel things for Oz that she has never felt before. He pretty much won’t let her out of his sight, but he won’t tell her why. Does he care for her, or are his motives far more sinister? I wouldn’t consider this a romance-yet. Although I think most people will be rooting for one for Khara and Oz. Oz is such an enigma, and I just wish he was a lot more forthcoming with Khara about the things he does, and the why of things he does. He is the mystery of this story as far as I am concerned.

While Oz is the mystery, I don’t want to ruin the book by telling what the crux of the story ends up being. Taking place in the Underworld, of course this book has lots of villains. The author’s view of the Underworld was pretty different, and not really what I expected. So although there are many characters originating from mythology, there was plenty of other world building going on in this story.

I found this book to be a bit slower then the first, as I was wishing for a bit more action. Other than that, there were interesting characters, and I liked that Khara has more emotions, then she had in the first book. With so many villains, of course some cause Khara to get involved in some really bad situations. And I can’t leave out Oz, I still want to know more about him.

It’s not as much of a urban fantasy as the first one was, so I think I would consider it a fantasy. If you are a mythology fan, this could be your next favorite read.

Unseen the second book following up after Unborn where Khara the only surviving female child of Ares decides that the only answers she is going to get are waiting for her in Hell. Where is her mother? How did she fall? Why was she given up? How convenient The Dark One Oz is willing to transport her there for a price of course. Yet after his last deception who knows what Oz’s agenda has in store. One thing for sure is after finishing the book I am no closer to that answer….lol

Amber Lynn Natusch has this poetic rhythm ever present in these two books. This dark steady wordplay, that is a bonus as far as I am concerned. Not sure if it is just for Khara’s character (since I have only read these two books). I love the simplistic yet directness that is Khara. Her unwavering black and white world is forever shattered now that she “feels”. I personally think Unseen was the perfect title for this book. (So much is Unseen) Feelings are a tricking thing to live with if you ask me…a solution may be present and can make sense yet if you feel against it your judgment may sway. Basically Khara seemed cold (yet curious) in the first book but had this steadfast attitude, she was very confident. In Unseen there is sooo much going on that it is hard to see the enemy. All these emotions Khara has, her new self is questioning and motivated by her love and this new heart ache that has taken up in her chest since she stole away from her brothers.

Love is blindness.

It can and will change the way you see people.

Khara is a force unlike anything imaginable when it comes to protecting her family. Her actions speak of this clearly; I only hope it was worth the consequences. . This blindness was calculating and patient much like love. Also it totally bit her in the ass.

The Oz and Khara relationship is still a battle of wits an even though Oz has proven (in my eyes) where his heart and loyalty lies I can see why she is so cautious. One thing is for certain he has shown that he will be a safe harbor for her fall in. Also when he does claim her OMG it will be a thing of beauty. The chemistry and attraction that is building between these two can only lead to a crescendo of fireworks.

Sad to say there is no hanky panky in this book…sniffles. I do have a feeling it will be worth the wait! What the book lacks in actual sex it makes up for with intrigue and desire. Still a win! Nail biting anticipation for the next book. Things I have to know, like the necromancer was she in on it? WTH is up with Deimos and Hades. Will Drew get his head on straight? Damn it will Oz kiss the girl already…?!So much to come and so many days to wait.

I received this for an honest review. I can honestly say this series is more than meets the eye! Love it!

Unseen This is the follow-up to Unborn, which I read and reviewed earlier. I didn't really care for this all that much and don't really understand all rave reviews it received on Goodreads! More than half of the story was spent with Khara running around the Underworld, seeking answers to questions from those who would rather hide the truth from her. I believe she sums it up rather nicely in her own words at the beginning of chapter 21:
It seemed as though all I had done upon my return was storm through the maze of halls in the Underworld in search of others. Others with answers that I lacked. The monotony of it was beginning to gnaw at my resolve.

Sing it, sister! I hear you loud and clear!

When Khara first returns to the Underworld, she's trying to discover the reason she was hidden away, but we've already learned in book one that any daughter born to Ares would be put to death. Is that not reason enough for her to be sent from her true parents and hidden away? Why is she not satisfied with this answer?

But then, a tragedy befalls one of her brothers, and suddenly she's got different priorities, and an entirely new set of questions she's seeking answers to. Throughout the story, Khara continues to act recklessly, disregarding any and all warnings placed in front of her.

The way things unfolded in this book reminded me of a sitcom, where all manner of chaos and misunderstanding ensues simply because one person neglects to tell another the full and true story. Haven't we learned by now the trouble that can come by withholding information? Isn't Khara constantly harping on Oz over that very thing? Of course, her hypocritical actions serve to drive the plot forward, but it's weak at best. And it's only about 70% in that some action finally starts to happen.

So were there any redeeming qualities to this book for me? Well, it was more fun once the real action started. I only wish it hadn't taken 200 pages to get there!

**I received this book for free from (47North) via (NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**

*Genre* Urban Fantasy
*Rating* 3.0

*My Thoughts*

Unseen, the second novel in the Unborn series, picks up right where Unborn left off. Khara somehow managed to survive her time in Detroit with her Petronus Ceteri brothers Sean, Casey, Drew, Pierson, Kierson, as well as the fallen angel Ozereus aka Oz. But, now she wants to return home to the Underground and her adopted father Hades to uncover answers about her mother, and her abilities. While in Detroit, she faced off against the Stealers, and managed to learn that she is something that shouldn't be possible; An Adult Unborn.

Readers of Unborn know that Khara is a special case, which means that she has more enemies than allies. Her father is Ares, and the only female sibling still alive. We know that her mother is apparently an Angel. We know that makes her a warrior angel and a vessel of the dead. What we don't know is what she did to Oz when he fell to the Stealers, and turned him into a Dark One? Is her mother still alive? Does Ares know that Khara is alive? We also know that Khara's presence and word of her abilities is spreading quickly, and it is only a matter of time before someone tries to use her or kill her.

What happened...? Where to start...?
Well, If this book is not worth more than 5 stars I don't know what it is. First of all, wow! I'm seriously still trying to grasp all my thoughts running through my mind.
This book is a mega mind fuck. Oz is that character that you know you have to trust but his behavior makes it so difficult to do so, I believe that he will end up being Khara's mate (Or at least, I hope so) but knowing Amber and her fantastic ways of completely spinning stories, I'm not even sure about it. Khara is an impossibility which only makes her more amazing. Her powers becoming now clearer are the bomb! Not only Sean has to be amazing but his sister has to be too!
I was only 20% in the book when the unthinkable happened with Drew, I screamed... That's was a bitchslap in the face, and then when he was in the Victorian at the end, I knew that Persephone was a cunning bitch.
I cannot wait to see how and why... Of course Zeus reining the underworld had something to do with it but, but Hades? At the end... And then Khara coming to that conclusion... This is going to take more energy than expected. The next book has to come ASAP.

Amber has again outdone herself, I have no words to describe everything that happens in "Unseen" you have to read it to understand it. I was on a high throughout the whole entire book. Mind blowing would be more accurate. Worth every single star.

ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, this was not my favorite book from this author. I think it might have been the general lack of action (which did pick up towards the end) and what felt like everyone just talking around each other.

Khara returned to the Underworld in search of answers about who she was and how she came to be in the situation she was in. I can't be certain due to the fact that no one was capable of giving a direct answer, but I don't think she learned anything. At one point, Khara summed up my thoughts when she said something along the lines of all she had done since she'd been in the Underworld was storm through the halls looking for people that had the answers she wanted and the monotony of it was starting to bother her.

It seemed that all her trip served to do was make things bad for all those she loved. Her naivete led to her doing some really ill-advised things that affected those closest to her in a negative way, which was a tad bit frustrating.

That being said, I still want to read more. The author set the stage for a series of events that I want to see through. I know from experience with her other works that it'll be worth it.

I couldn't wait to start reading the second book Unseen. Khara and Oz are hot together. Both of them are so emotional that they are emotionally stunted with each other. The tension between the two is nicely paced. There is so much going on in this story and honestly I saw a lot of it coming ahead of time but instead of bashing my head against the wall and screaming at my e-reader I just sat back and watched it unfold. For being centuries old Khara really is just naive to the point of wanting to hit her. But I like her spunk. Hades, I just do not know what to think of him. He leave me frustrated for answers and Persephone I just do not like. The brothers remind me a lot of a pack of boys looking to one up each other. Fun to watch but stay out of their way. This was a good read and I am excited for the next installment.

I received an ARC from Amazon Publishing/47North and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

"Unseen" picks up where the first book left off which is refreshing as I had no trouble to become re-involved with the characters. Khara goes back home to get answers to her many questions. There is something going on that Khara can't quite figure out. She trusts the wrong person and ends up releasing souls and Gods that were condemned to the worst place in the Underworld. Khara, her brothers, Oz and Hades return above ground to hunt and capture/kill these souls.

Amber Lynn Natusch has created a fascinating story about the underworld, the ruler and the souls that are kept there. In this second book you discover a Khara that shows more human-like thoughts and feelings as well as the soft grey wings that Oz helped her to birth.

I wonder where Book 3 will take us....

I really liked the first book in this series, but this one fell very short for me. The whole first half was just confusing. Everyone around Khara seems to know all about her mysterious mother and origins, but will not tell her anything. It was really maddening that she seems to just accept that and goes on hunting and asking people, only to be given the run around by everyone. It got old really quickly. From that point on the story picks up a bit, but it never really recovered for me. There is nothing really redeeming about Oz's character this time around either so any love interest was disappointing as well.

DNF, got about 89% through. I was hoping from the first book it would pick up in terms of the things I wanted to see, but the characters remained very shallow and the settings were very sparse. Not to mention the weird contrast between the fact that the characters all speak very (infuriatingly) archaically because they're hundreds or thousands of years old, but they all act like teenagers with very little wisdom or life experience.

This can't be the end.......

This can't be the end, because there's no closure and you left it on a cliffhanger. I do wonder if more books will come in the series since the last book issued was in 2015. I really enjoyed this series I would like to read more of the story and have questions answered about Khara and what her powers are capable of doing. Id also love to hear the rest of the story between Khara and Oz.
