The Curse Keepers series, now offered in a single collection containing the full text of all three novels and three prequel novellas, plus:
• An all-new introduction by the author, Denise Grover Swank • All six works presented in the author’s preferred reading order
The wall between our world and a world full of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than four hundred years…and it’s about to come crashing down. In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank’s epic paranormal romance series, the Curse Keepers, two reluctant yet brave heroes are all that stand between the world’s survival and its total destruction.
The Curse Keepers (Book 1)
A descendent of two legendary spirit banishers from the Lost Colony of Roanoke, Ellie Lancaster dismisses her Curse Keeper role as part of a harmless fairy tale—until she meets the handsome and infuriating Collin Dailey, a fellow Curse Keeper, and realizes they must fulfill their destinies in order to save the world from vengeful spirits.
This Place Is Death (Curse Keepers Secret Book 1)
In this intriguing prequel to the Curse Keepers series, Roanoke colonist Ananias Dare, his expectant wife, and their friend Manteo realize that their settlement faces a sinister force much more evil than the natives who threaten their lives—and their only hope for survival may leave them with hell to pay.
The Curse Breakers (Book 2)
With passion threatening to consume both her and Collin, Ellie must fight the unleashed demons tormenting her. But when she finds herself abandoned, she embarks on a terrifying journey to claim the mark of the god Ahone and finish what the Curse Keepers began in order to prevent hell on earth.
This Changes Everything (Curse Keepers Secret Book 2)
Ellie Dare Lancaster may be only eight years old, but she already knows about her future as a Curse Keeper—and once an unholy force is accidentally summoned, bringing terrible evil into her home, the young Ellie becomes part of the newest generation caught up in the war between the gods of good and evil.
The Curse Defiers (Book 3)
The gate between the human and spirit worlds is open, and only Ellie and Collin can stop the trail of death and destruction—but first, they have to break free from their tangled web of treachery, jealousy, and lies in order to choose their own destinies, even if that means defying the gods themselves.
This Is Your Destiny (Curse Keepers Secret Book 3)
Collin feels trapped by his job, his debt, and especially his destiny as a Curse Keeper. But when the fearsome god Ahone reaches out to him with a tempting offer, it may be the key to Collin’s liberation…if he can survive the ensuing confrontation with his deadly counterpart.
Once again Denise Grover Swank has written a series that sucked me right in! Now Denise gives us the entire series here in one collection! Denise does not write perfect characters, just like in real life, there is no perfection. These characters are each flawed in their own way based on the events that happened in their lives that helped to shape them. The Curse Keepers is based on the legends surrounding the lost colony of Roanoke NC. Over the centuries two families have held the secretes that made the colony disappear and has the power to destroy the world we know! When Collin and Ellie come together it is like lightning striking and through Collin's deception the gates of hell are thrown open now it is up to Ellie to fight the demons that escaped and threaten her existence and that of humanity. In order to succeed, the one person she needs is the one who deceived her! Both characters ,Ellie and Collin grow so much through this series. You learn to love both even through their flaws and cheer them on in their quest to make things right. I love the bonus novella's you get with this collection. As usual with Denise's series, she gives us extras in order for us to better understand the background of the story and characters in her novellas. They really do help in enriching the reading enjoyment!
Anyone who picks up this series as a collection is one lucky s.o.b. Why? Because you get to read the whole thing from start to finish without having to wait. Why is this a big deal? Well, when you are dealing with the subject matter of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, curses, and these seemingly real characters, you don't want to wait for new stuff to come out. I had to do that and believe me it sucks. You know how you're watching an episode of your favorite show and it's ratings time so it's really good and then it ends and you have to wait until next week and you're agonizing over it the entire week wondering what's going to happen? Yeah that's what it's like with this series. So trust me when I say that you are lucky that you get it all together at once. You'll pick up and start reading book one and then immediately start the next one. When you're done with that, you're going to finish the entire thing because you won't be able to not finish it. Just alert someone that you're going to start reading it so when you aren't heard from for awhile they won't worry about you too much. Make sure you've got some snacks handy, some tissues, and a nice comfortable spot to read. You're gonna need all three.
This was a fully engrossing read with dynamic and flawed characters, interesting mythology and a terrific story arc. Based around the Lost Colony of Roanoke (something completely new to this Brit) it embellished and elaborated on the old stories with great sucess making for a very interesting and somewhat educational (for me, anyway) read.
I read each full length book and novella in the author's preferred reading order over the course of a week and thoroughly enjoyed my time doing so. I'd say the first book was the strongest with the most Oh-my-gosh! moments. In fact, there was a cloud hovering over poor Ellie's head almost the whole time that you were just waiting to burst. And when it did? Owie! It pinched quite a lot! It was also great to watch Ellie develop in her role as Cursekeeper from non-believer status (she could only really go up from there, lol) and her interactions with bad boy fellow keeper Collin were first class.
The author then took quite a twist and risk with book two introducing a new character with a very central role. This complicates and confuses pretty much everything and everyone, leaving poor Ellie with a big decision to make
The in between novellas are dinfinitely worth working in as they provide great backstory. The one from Collin's POV at the end being only icing to the cake.
The conclusion of book three saw tremendous character growth from Ellie with some great climactic scenes in the last quarter. I still, however, found myself conflicted over certain matters as the book came to a close and so my satisfaction-o-meter has only been able to reach 4 stars for that reason.
Still, a very good read that I would definitely recommend.
4 Stars ★★★★ A copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the storyline and the characters. I loved them all. I think Ellie should end up win Collin for sure. I like David, just not for Ellie. What I didn't like was the third book re-capped everything we just read. So that was kind of frustrating.
This series of books and novellas were an action packed emotional adventure. First book of the series was a little slower for me to get in but didn’t rake long for me to be hooked and it all going by so fast. Took me a total of 12 days to complete the whole collection while still working and taking care of children. I did have many long nights with limited sleep because of how hooked I was on this series. I am curious on how the next spin-off series “Piper Lancaster” relate to this series. The author did an amazing job and encourage everyone to read.
I fell in love with this series within the first few chapters. Denise Grover Swank definitely knows how to weave a story line, I can’t wait to read more from these characters!
The Curse Keepers Collection By Denise Grover Swank
The Curse Keepers
****3.5 Stars**** Book 1 The story develops around a curse that has been handed down through the generations for the last four hundred years. Ellie is the curse keeper of the sea and she is a smart but realistic girl who doesn't believe in the curse nor does she remember everything she was taught. With her mom long gone and her dad’s Alzheimer’s, Ellie’s left to rely on Collin, the curse keeper of the land, for all her information. Against her better judgment, Ellie gives in to her desire and places all her trust in Collin. I really like Ellie and my heart breaks for her in this book. I know there’s more to Collin besides his cocky arrogant ways. I’m interested to see how the story picks up in the next book. I liked how this book is different than the usual YA paranormal out there. There’s a lot of information and Denise Grover Swank has to have one awesome imagination. As a parent who regularly suggests books to my teen, I plan on holding off on this one until she’s a little older. As for my teen and her maturity level, I would hold off until she is at least sixteen.
Novella This Place is Death This is a novella about how the curse came about four hundred years ago. It’s interesting to know exactly how the sacrifices happened.
Book 2 The Curse Breakers This story begins with Ellie heartbroken over her dad’s death. She knows what she has to do and she knows she needs Collin even though she blames him for everything that has happened. When he refuses to help her she looks for another way to find the answers she needs and this leads her to a professor named David. Throughout the book, Ellie relies more and more on David as her feelings for him build. But she is scared because she is afraid of losing another person she cares for. She still has this instant lust going on when she sees Collin but fights it. They find out the curse has more holes and hidden agendas than they could ever know and to find the truths hidden Ellie needs her hidden memories.
Novella This Changes Everything This is a short story about why Ellie told Claire the big secret and what really happened to her mom. It’s interesting to read and know more details than given in the next book but not really needed.
Book 3 The Curse Defiers In this book Ellie slowly remembers what happened the night her mom was killed. It comes as no big shock to her that the Ricardo Estate. As information gathers she knows she needs Collin to finish this thing once and for all. When David is taken by the guardians, Ellie is made to choose between Okeus and Ahone. Her choice surprises everyone.
Novella This is Your Destiny This is is a short story of how Ahone came to Collin and told him to go to the other Curse Keeper. It’s wrote in Collins POV and how he really felt about the curse. It also has the meeting at New Moon.
I enjoyed this story. I did figure out certain parts and others I wondered. The ending I wanted something a little more final. But all in all this was a good book.
Especially if you are a kindle unlimited member - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Start reading these books! A little history regarding the Lost Colony Roanoke, mystery and some unexplainable happenings, a little romance - add to that a second romantic guy who has some answers... it just doesn't get better for a smart, intriguing story. I found myself thinking the next day about many of the things I had read the night before in these books. Could that really happen? It is fun to think about - there is more to the world than we know. Most importantly it is a book that gets the reader thinking and is highly enjoyable.
I absolutely love this series! It's another complete win by DGS. The characters are vividly created, the storyline keeps you interested and the action and adventure keeps you invested and on the edge of your seat. 5.99 for this Collection is a steal and you won't regret it :)
I have previously read and reviewed each of the titles in this omnibus. What's new to me is the cover, and the introduction to it from Denise. Both of which are excellent! I feel like Denise is talking to me with the small bit of insight into how she wrote the series. I would even love an annotated edition of the books, but that's a whole lot to ask for! ;) The Curse Keepers series caught my imagination from the very beginning. It's got me hook, line, and sinker! I ADORE this series and cannot wait to see it continue!
THE CURSE KEEPERS: The Curse Keepers is a fascinating tale! At the heart of the story is Ellie Lancaster and Collin Dailey, the lost colony of Roanoke, and one nasty Native American curse that protects the world as we know it from ancient gods, monsters, and other things that go bump in the night. I instantly loved Ellie and her best friend Claire. Collin’s introduction left me wanting to know so much more than is ever revealed in this first book of the series. I initially LOVED Collin, but all of that changed very quickly at the end. I want to cause bodily harm to that man. The one question I kept asking is: why are all of these gods and creatures going after Ellie instead of Collin? It drove me bananas! And kept me reading, of course.
I love this series in a big way. It’s engaging, fast paced, intriguing, and most of all a whole lot of fun. This book ends on a BIG cliffhanger, so you’ll definitely want to read The Curse Breakers right away!
*****Five stars from this happy reader!!!!!*****
THE CURSE BREAKERS: The Curse Breakers picks up not long after the ending of The Curse Keepers. Ellie is dealing with the fallout of Collin Dailey’s perceived betrayal, and the gods and monsters that were released when the gate to Popogusso was opened. Ellie has lost her father, her only living relative, and is left with her step-mother, Myra, to handle operations at the B&B. Mayhem ensues as Ellie is picking up the pieces the ever mysterious Collin left behind. She has grown and is trying to understand her role as a Curse Keeper. She seeks out assistance from professor David Preston. He’s entirely insufferable in their first encounter, but he ends up in Manteo studying the (now recovered) Lost Colony site. He quickly becomes more involved and LIKEABLE! I’m not going to give too much away, but Collin does reappear a few times. And he swoops in to save the day at the end. And speaking of events near the end of the book… Okeus is one big creep. I mean… wow. I’m just going to tell you now that his boundaries are quite limited. Almost non-existent. This second installment of the Curse Keepers series has left me thirsty for more. It’s just as engaging and well-paced as the first novel. I cannot wait for the third! *****Five stars*****
THE CURSE DEFIERS: The Curse Defiers is quite the whirlwind read! I went in expecting the unexpected and I got more than I bargained for. Ellie’s relationship with David is kind of sweet. And he’s not at all like Collin, so that alone gets bonus points from me. Not only is Ellie being harassed in her role as Curse Keeper, she’s also pieced together memories of her mother’s death. Her very existence boils down to careful manipulation by a god. I won’t tell you which one here, you’ll have to find that out for yourself.
Claire takes a small role in aiding Ellie, and I truly hope we see more of her abilities in future installments! There’s a character death that I was hoping wasn’t true until it was revealed. Collin also redeemed himself for me. I won’t say how, but he did it. That does not mean I want to see him and Ellie together just because they were made for each other. It has to happen naturally, and the man’s got some hefty competition with David around. And this coming from a person who despises love triangles!
I have to say that I was so terribly heartbroken for Ellie for multiple reasons! I felt such a heavy sense of loss as the story closed out. I’m absolutely anxious for the novella featuring Collin. I wish I could time travel and read it now! The fourth book of the series is even farther away, but you can bet I'll be reading it!
Finally: Okeus. Go away. You creepy weirdo. And Ahone? You’re terrible, too. Love, me! ;) *****FIVE STARS*****
THIS PLACE IS DEATH: This Place is Death is SUCH a big part of this series! I'd even say it's required reading before the first Curse Keepers book! You will be witness to the actual original curse being created! It also will help you to understand the curse more.
I also appreciate Denise's take on the Lost Colony! No one truly knows what happened, so keep an open mind and enjoy this fictitious journey!
I really felt the betrayal of Dare when Manteo turned on him. It's a mirror of what happens at the end of the first Curse Keepers book. I love it.
This novella is NOT a required read, but it will give you more insight into the series.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING: I loved this short installment in the Curse Keepers series. Getting to see Ellie's parents in action together was great, even though it was short-lived. It's no secret that Ellie's mother died when she was young, but being witness to it was heart-wrenching! Even if it weren't for the curse, I would imagine that it would be an event a 7-year old would pray to forget.
I loved seeing Ellie's and Claire's friendship. They're really more like sisters!
I'll avoid the spoiler of the major twists involving Ellie's mother's murder, but I will say that while it was shocking I wasn't fully surprised. It goes to show that the curse and those who enacted it have been behind everything in a major way from the very start. I'm not sure if I should be afraid for Ellie, or afraid for Ahone/Okeus!
As this was a novella, it was a quick read! It gave great insight into a part of the series that I'm sure will play a major role as Denise continues the series. I'm greatly looking forward to The Curse Defiers and everything to follow!
Five stars
THIS IS YOUR DESTINY: **Possible spoilers ahead! Please do not read if you have not read the first three books and two novellas of the The Curse Keepers series!**
**My review is based on my NetGalley copy**
This novella answered almost everything I wanted to know about how Collin F. Dailey ended up in the restaurant with Ellie Dare Lancaster to break the curse in The Curse Keepers. After reading this one, I absolutely understand his intentions in all three books released so far. I also understand why he is always so reluctant to share his information with Ellie <--- this is something I always wanted to know! I’ve always wanted to reach through the book and slap some sense into him!
There’s a lot of manipulation and lies that comes with all of the gods and monsters of this world and it’s absolutely infuriating! Obviously they can’t all be straightforward with their intentions all of the time, so we’re left with characters who are struggling to make sense of it all. That’s where Collin seems to be stuck. Before this novella I always loved to HATE Collin, but now I don’t quite feel the same. My opinion was already changing in The Curse Defiers. He was made to believe that the Dare Keeper was essentially being trained to kill him one day, so he did his best to guard himself around Ellie. I think most of us know that isn’t at all the case, but Collin had no way of knowing the truth of the matter going in.
I think the timing of this novella is perfect, too. Reading this before The Curse Defiers would have given too much information too soon. I enjoyed the backstory of Collin’s family. We’ve always seen so much of Ellie’s and NOTHING of Collin’s. His whole family is so terribly splintered, but I wonder if his grandmother or brother will come back to play a role in future books? His grandmother’s knowledge could be useful if she can set aside what she thinks she knows about the Dare family and their role in the bigger picture. I would like to see him repair his relationship with Connor, his brother. I would also like to know what exactly happened to Collin’s father since the mystery of his disappearance remains (not that anyone misses him)!
I always thought that the two Keepers should work together, and now I’m sure of it. Everything I’ve seen thus far tells me they need each other whether or not they like it. Both Collin and Ellie have a lot of work head for them. They’ve got to somehow piece their lives back together while fighting crazy gods and monsters. I’m sure it’ll be one heck of a ride! I am absolutely excited to see where the series goes next! *****FIVE STARS*****
(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)
The Curse Keepers series, now offered in a single collection containing the full text of all three novels and three prequel novellas, plus: • An all-new introduction by the author, Denise Grover Swank • All six works presented in the author’s preferred reading order
The wall between our world and a world full of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than four hundred years . . . and it’s about to come crashing down. In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank’s epic paranormal romance series, the Curse Keepers, two reluctant yet brave heroes are all that stand between the world’s survival and its total destruction.
This review is based not just on the stories, but the collection as a whole.
I am always cautious when a book says "Author's preferred reading order." Feels like the author doesn't trust her reader to work out that Book 3 comes after Book 2...
As for the stories...I really did enjoy the novellas. To the point and told me everything I needed to know about plot of the full novels at the time. We learn about how the curses happened, the story from another character's POV, and some details about something that happens in one of the books but explored further, to give the reader a little more background on what happened and why it was important.
However, I just really didn't get into the novels themselves. Too much time was spent on either attempting to build the world...or characters lusting after each other. Didn't really hit any real heights I am afraid.
I think these stories would be best suited to being read individually, with some time between them, otherwise it all just becomes a bit of a blur...
I absolutely love this collection!! The Curse Keepers is about the lost colony of Roanoke, which is already an interesting mystery all in its own, but with a brand new twist and I absolutely love the direction that Denise Grover Swank took this. It is set in present day and almost everyone thinks they are just living in the normal world we live in, so it seems relatable, especially with some current attitudes and plenty of sarcasm, but it’s also intriguing enough that you want to find out more about the curse and this world the main characters know about and interact with. There is some romance, some mystery, a lot of action, and a lot of humor in this series. If you like any kind of paranormal books, or even if you don’t really read paranormal but want to try something new, these are the books for you!
I highly recommend box sets and collections! Denise Grover Swank has so many books and always keeps us in the loop with the novellas. Novellas always round out the series. That said, it is often times confusing which book or novella comes first or next BUT with a collection or box set, you don't have to worry about that! You can easily go from one book to the next seamlessly. Also, you get a good deal on the price as well! It's a no brainer there!!
This urban fantasy keeps you on your toes and is very suspenseful. I couldn't put it down - slight love story involved but very action packed. I felt like I was watching an action film in my head while I was reading this. You won't regret picking up this series! Go do it now!
I gave this book 4 stars even though I can honestly say I did not like either of the main characters. Ellie seemed like she was bipolar and I just couldn’t get a good read on her. Colin was just a jerk from the very beginning. And you could label him a bit bipolar as well, not liking anything about Ellie one moment and then claiming she’s the one the next.
I did like the storyline and will read the 2nd book to find out what happens. I am hoping both characters redeem themselves.
I love this series! I was hesitant to read it because it falls outside my normal book comfort zone but I had heard so many good things about it and I love the authors other books. I had to give it a try and I am so glad I did. These books are so entertaining and exciting! I love the characters and the storyline. I had to read them as fast as i could.
Could not stop reading!!!! This collection literally kept me up!
What if your entire family was cursed? And you were the "Keeper" of this curse. AND YOU DIDN'T BELIEVE! Then one normal day your whole world is turned upside down with the touch of a stranger. READ ON AND FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS
I'm not new to DGS's books, but I hadn't read urban fantasy until I got to read Of Ash and Spirits. I got hooked and I had to read the Curse Keepers before reading the second book of Pipe Lancaster's series. The b books are great, filled with action and some masterly written plots.
I love a bundle especially book related. Having a whole completed series waiting to devour is the best feeling in the world, it’s just finding the time to devout to it, is the problem. This was incredible from the flawed characters to the wonderful arcs and an interesting mythology. The novellas were a great edition that tie in back story and expand the world and story.
Love, Love, LOVE this series!! This is a great way to get all of the books at once, because once you start reading them, you will want all of them. This series follows Ellie and Collin, they are the curse keepers. Except they help to break the curse instead, so now they have to try to undo what they did. Great Urban Fantasy set. A must read!
Once you start this series, you cannot put it down. You dive into it and it completely captures you and takes you into the world of the Curse Keepers. The story is full of suspense and when you think, you got figured out, here comes an unexpected turn. Denise Grover Swank rocks!
Thoroughly entertaining and I was enthralled after the first few chapters. The tension between Collin and Ellie is palpable and when David joins the mix, woo! The characters are so well developed and intertwined with each other that you are drawn in and feel like you are visiting old friends.
Another awesome series by Denise Grover Swank. Different to her other books but such a great read. You will not be able to put it down. The things that happen between Ellie and Collin are crazy. I really love the history side of it and the native American beliefs. Very interesting and great story lines.
I absolutely loved this series. I wish I had found it a little earlier because I had just finished a trip to Roanoke. I found this story so compelling and I love the Denise actually researched a real location and history to create this story. I love stories reflected from real world places and history. One of my absolute favorites.
I started this because I love all things DGS. Again I’m totally not disappointed. I felt an instant connection to the characters and the plot. I couldn’t stop reading. Staying up until 2 or 3 am most nights. Can’t wait to continue this story with Piper Lancaster!
I've never been a big science fiction fan. However wow Denise brilliant! She has a way of making the characters seem as if you've known them forever. Amazing series the only down side is that there wasn't more to read
Honestly didn’t think I would be interested in this kind of genre but I am not afraid to admit that I was a fool !! After finally reading the curse keeper series I am hooked !! Fantastic series highly recommend!!
This series is amazing. It puts an entirely new spin on the tale of the Lost Colony, the role of the Native Americans of the Outer Banks, and brings in demons and gods. On top of all that the story hooks you, keeps you, and just won't let you go.
From the moment the story begins it sucks you in and it’s hard to put this book ( and series ) down. The characters are so defined you feel like you’re right there beside them along for the ride!
I didnt know what to expect when I started reading this series but this series was really good! It pulled me in and I couldnt put it down! I loved the character's!
