What I loved most is how faith is woven so meaningfully into the story. Inspired by John 16:33, the message of facing trials with courage and trust in God really shines through. Caleb and Alena go through so much, and their faith is not just present, it’s essential.

Caleb feels like he lives in two worlds and not fitting in either. Born Amish, he decided his calling from God was to work in the Englisch world fighting crime and seeking justice for victims through the legal system. He’s worked himself up to the sheriff position, one he feels he must prove every day he’s worthy of. Having not been baptized, he hadn’t been shunned, but that doesn’t mean his father accepts him. All his old feelings come back when he sees Alena back in town. They’d grown up together and were the closest of friends. She accepted him for who he was and challenged him to follow his dreams. Then the day he hesitated too long to defend her, things changed. While there may be a strain in their friendship, he will do anything and everything within his power to keep her safe while helping her find the answers she needs.
Why would someone want to kill her kindhearted grandfather? Will Alena’s grandfather’s last words change Alena’s perception of her whole life? Has it all been one big lie? Are those few words connect to her mother, who died when she was born? Will Alena start to see first-hand what Caleb had been going through back then, and even now, and have her understanding what happened that day that changed their friendship? Is it possible after all these years for the embers of their friendship to ignite again and start to flicker into something more? Can they keep one step ahead of the masked man that’s determined to kill them? What could they possibly think they know or have? How is he repeatedly finding them? Who do they dare trust?

Susan Furlong, the Author of "Amish Country Homicide" has written an intense, intriguing and suspenseful novel. In this well -written psychological thriller and mystery, the author vividly describes the Amish community and the dramatic characters. The characters are complex, complicated, flawed, and some are suspects. The female protagonist Alena Walsh returns home to see her grandfather shot by a disguised man. Before her grandfather dies, he tells Alena some truths and past secrets that change Alena's world forever. The Sheriff, Caleb Mast, is a former Amish friend and both are trying to find the killer/killers. Recently in this small town, there was a murder of a young woman. Alena is reminded that her mother was killed many years ago. There are several attempts to scare and hurt Alena, and Caleb is having a difficult time keeping her safe. There are old secrets, betrayals, attacks, danger, and murder. The Amish life and the more modern life make things difficult, and Alena and Caleb are attracted to each other. This is an edgy, intense, twisted psychological suspense and mystery thriller that I highly recommend that you read.
This book is my favorite so far from this author. It combines everything I love in a book, danger, mystery, and second chances. Alena has come home from being overseas and walks into her grandparents house as her grandfather is shot. Before he succumbs to his injuries, he tells Alena something that he has kept hidden since her Mama was killed years earlier. She gets attacked but she survives the first attack. The attacks keep coming from every direction. Who killed her grandfather and why? Then you have Caleb , the Sherriff who is former Amish, that was friends with Alena growing up and who is trying to provide protection for Alena. Will he be able to save her, find the killer and also help his family who has their own problems? I was completely shocked by who all was behind everything. This book will keep you guessing all the way to the end. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, but was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions expressed are what I thought of the book.
Thank you to the author for providing this free book in exchange for my honest review of Amish Country Homicide. This was a fast paced, page turning read that pulled me in right from the start. Alena returns home after years away, only to walk in on her grandfather as he’s dying. From there, the story takes off as the sheriff, her childhood friend, works to uncover the killer while trying to keep Alena safe. The suspense stays tight throughout and the author does a great job building tension without losing the emotional threads. I really enjoyed the characters, especially the way their relationships added depth to the mystery. The setting was another highlight for me, it added atmosphere and grounded the story in a vivid sense of place. The twists kept me guessing all the way to the end and the overall ride was both edgy and satisfying. I loved this one and would recommend it to any reader, especially those who enjoy suspense.
This was a total binge read for me. Once I started it, I didn’t want to put it down. Between the suspense, deep running mysteries, and a romance developing throughout, I was hooked.
Alena is back in town, but instead of a sweet reunion with her grandparents, she is drawn into a crime, and now the attacker is after her. With her former best friend now the local sheriff, Caleb has no choice but to help. The tension between them is strong, filled with years of unspoken words. When their lives are at risk, it forces them to reevaluate what matters most and maybe find some light in the darkness, if they can uncover the mystery before the killer gets their way.
The tension and suspense really pulled me in. I did not see the twists coming at all, which made it even better. I loved being surprised with every turn of the page!
I gave this 4.5 stars rounded to 5!
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
In reading Amish Country Homicide by Susan Furlong, the cover depicts the novel as "love inspired suspense". I thought it was going to be a romance-focused novel, but I was very happy as the story unfolded that there was so much more to the book than romance.
Right from the start, I was invested in wanting to know what would happen next to the heroine, Alena. Each chapter was thrilling and we also had our hero, Caleb, working alongside of Alena in solving the mystery of who killed Alena's grandfather and another unsolved murder. And not to mention the hair-raising events that sent Alena and Caleb running for their lives.
I liked how the history of Alena and Caleb unfolded as I got to know them better. I really appreciated the references made to praying to our Lord, the Amish faith, and forgiveness.
It was an action-packed story and I look forward to reading more of Susan Furlong's books.
All Alena did was return home to be with her family. She got so much more than that. Her granddad was the victim of a terrible crime, leaving her gran alone. She was reunited with Caleb who himself had some things going on his life, and she definitely got more than she was bargaining for from this relationship. They have a sweet love story, to be honest. There is a lot of family history brought forth through these pages, but also reconciliation and forgiveness for past wrongs (in some people’s eyes) and present circumstances. I also appreciated the fact that in more serious signs of trouble, the situations Alena and Caleb found themselves in, no matter what they held fast to their faith. They also never gave up on their families, most especially Caleb who had more to overcome than even he imagined. I also appreciated the fact that there was a bit of insight into the Amish culture, an interesting aspect to this tale.
Coming home is always welcoming and comforting, but for Alena Walsh, it becomes the start of something gruesome and unimaginable. She is confronted with a terrifying, heart-shattering sight the moment she arrives - her grandfather has been murdered in cold blood! This tragedy cracks open some long-buried secrets that threatens to shake the Amish community to its core!
Susan Furlong's AMISH COUNTRY HOMICIDE is a twisty, fast-paced and adrenaline-charged Love Inspired Suspense that kept me holding my breath until the very last page! It's the perfect pick for any reader who craves a gripping, edge-of-your-seat mystery.
I absolutely loved the duo of Alena and Caleb, and Sunny completely stole my heart. I am a total sucker of canine characters, and Sunny added so much charm to the story!
Furlong has penned another terrific suspense novel. Having never been to the Amish Country, the Author took me on a trip I’ve always thought about taking. The feeling Furlong writes into Alena's character illuminates on the page. When she found her grandfather shot, I was devastated alongside Alena, and my heart went out to her at that moment. This story is full of plot twists, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Alena and Caleb work through the evidence connected to Alena’s mother’s murder. The revealed family secrets only cause Alena and the Sheriff to work harder. The author matched the characters' personalities perfectly. This story is heartfelt and touching; I'm sure you’re going to enjoy it as much as I did. If you’re looking for a good homicide suspense novel, this story is for you.

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.
Whew!!! This is an action packed story! From the time Alena returns home to Indiana from Africa it is non stop. She is met with a tragedy, heartaches, loss, and has just about every bad thing imaginable happen to her. More than once my thought was girl, get back on that plane. Caleb is a member of the sheriff’s department and lost friend to Alena. He’s right there beside her through all the travails as they evade but also attempt to hunt down the bad guys. I love the Amish background of Caleb and the persistence of his responsibilities and the gutsiness of Alena in several scenes. There’s a happy ending which they definitely deserve! Thanks Susan Furlong for the advance copy!!
This book starts with Alena returning home to her grandparents who raised her and sees that her grandfather has been shot. He makes a shocking confession to her which sets her world spinning. Sheriff Caleb and Alena grew up together and he is on the case not only to see who has done this to her family but also to protect Alena. The relationship between Caleb and Alena was strained before she left, but can they work together to solve this mystery? I think is this so far my favorite of the Love Inspired Suspense series (but I think I say that each time!)
