Thank you to Tang Seng for sending me an early copy of The Understudy in exchange for a review!

The Understudy is a fast-paced psychological thriller that showcases the world of glamorous Hollywood through the eyes of an up-and-coming actress. Christine Dreyer grew up in the movie industry as her father, Martin Dreyer, was a very successful and honest filmmaker. His goal was to tell real stories, hard-hitting truths, and expose various social issues through the lens of his camera. Unfortunately, he died tragically in an accident on set for his latest film. Years later, one of the most successful actresses in the business commits suicide, shocking fans and the media as she was preparing for her next role. Christine Dreyer becomes an instant star overnight through the help of her "Guardian Angel" agent. What unfolds next is bigger than Christine can ever imagine as she helps a producer expose the corruption and deceit embedded within "Hollywood."

I really enjoyed this modern retelling/reimagining of The Phantom of the Opera, told in modern-day Hollywood. This book is fast-paced and hooks you immediately as you uncover the truth and horror of the entertainment industry. Christine works with a mysterious producer by the name of Victoria, and together they plan to expose the true reason for her father's death and all who were involved through high-stakes espionage. The story is relevant to current social media culture and influencer expectations, adding some real-world context.

I wish I had known a little more about Victoria's character due to her mysterious and compelling performance. The Understudy can be read as a stand-alone, but I know it is the second book in The Blackbird Series. Perhaps there is more background information for her character in the establishing book. I did anticipate and predict some twists the story took, but was pleasantly surprised by others. I wouldn't be surprised if this was intentional to point the reader in one direction of prediction! The pacing was slightly inconsistent for my reading preferences. Certain chapters gave more details about the events and how Christine was affected, while others skipped over weeks or months. However, I understand the need to push the story further due to it being a quick thriller. Since this book deals with current trends of social media culture, specifically within the celebrity/influencer world, there is the use of internet language/slang that one may not enjoy if that doesn't fit their interests.

If you enjoy fast-paced storytelling with some "creepy" and theatrical details mixed into a real-world plot, then you'll enjoy the "Guardian Angel" pulling the strings for Christine. If you have an interest in Hollywood and can't look away from scandals, you'll enjoy the setting and nature of this story. If you like stories with hands-on espionage from the main characters, you will appreciate Victoria's drive and determination.

Thank you again to Tang Seng for the opportunity to read your book!

Having a very known father in an industry where the most important thing is connections is not always as easy as it sounds. Sometimes having a famous father becomes the worst thing possible because its constant comparisons that make us either hate ourselves or fathers for setting the standard too high.
Acting is a job that not only requires skills but also patience to cope up with time to reach the place that is rightfully ours. Trusting comes very hard for someone who has only faced rejections and problems all their life. Especially if the rejections are not due to lack of skill but because others have better connections and recommendations. Only having a famous father is not the best thing especially if the said father is dead.
This is the story of Christine Dreyer who is a struggling actress in the city of dreams, Los Angeles where every person comes with the dream of becoming famous but not everyone gets the expected fame. She has been doing small roles and other side jobs to stay afloat and pay rent. Her agent is a mysterious figure who has been helping and guiding her from the shadows but has never met her.
Suddenly an A-list actress is found dead in her penthouse which has left the biggest production company in a dilemma as she was the main lead and they’ve to find an actress with the same talent to fulfil her place. Christine’s father was famous for his integrity and honesty and was also a big director but his death ruined her life. She was going to be the part of the movie as a side role but the death has risked the whole movie but when she reaches the auditions she receives a shock in the form of audition for the main lead.
She is selected and receives very much love from the audience even before the movie is complete because of her father. She is just doing her best and trying to be the best version of herself as she knows that she is going to be compared to her father by everyone. As the movie is towards its completion she starts discovering some weird things about the industry and she tries finding and helping her long lost friend which definitely calls for trouble.
Will she be able to save her friend or she is going to fall in the mess that is bigger than her life? How is she going to come out of the problems she is making for herself? Are all the people she meets real or are just pretending to be nice? Read and find out.
