This was a clean, regency romance that combines historical romance, science and sweetness all into one. I think if you like a good period drama or books by Julie Klassen, you will enjoy this one!
Ella is our main girl who immediately stands out. She is outspoken, independent and a very refreshing take on your typical regency lead. She was brought up in a home devoted to natural philosophy and with the truth behind the rumors about her late mother... she really wants to clear her mother's name. We see a world of something I had never heard of before "phrenology" and I think that adds a layer of a lesser-known aspect of regency-era science to the book. She meets Gabriel, her childhood friend, who is to find a runaway girl linked to the same phrenologist speaking at the symposium. They go back to Keatley Hall and things unfold as they join forces to expose the phrenologist's fraud.
Phrenology is a now debunked pseudoscience that was popular in the 19th century. It was based on the idea that a person's character, personality traits and mental abilities were based on the shape of their head and bumps of their skull. I found the details around this science interesting, but some of the bits were a bit more on the dry side for me personally, so that's what dropped it down a smidge for me.
Either way, I did like the ending and where it went with the mystery aspect. I also enjoyed the romance.
I think if you want a unique spin on a regency romance, check this out.

An engaging Regency era story with mystery and a clean romance. Set at an old estate turned school for boys in 1820 England, the main characters find themselves racing against the clock to investigate a suspicious man who may hold the keys to a past crime.
A likeable pair, Ella and Gabriel had me rooting for them, especially towards the end as the danger increases. The pace picks up later with some peril, suspense, and surprise plot twists. The romance is sweet and clean, based on mutual respect, building on a past friendship.
Ella seems at first to want to please everyone, especially her father, and has to make hard decisions on how to help her friend. She is a good, strong young woman who finds her way to the truth without compromising what she knows is right, relying on what her mother taught her, to "be curious". No overt faith elements other than how to be a true friend, which involves forgiveness, seeking their best, and speaking the truth in love.
Readers who enjoy clean historical romances with mystery may like this one. 4.5 stars

Y’all this ‘unconventional lady’ is the same as every leading lady in historical novels - outspoken, opinionated, and ahead of her time. I enjoyed several of Sarah’s books previously, but I just got bored with this one so I’m putting it away for now.

I adored this one! Its refreshing to find a Historical Romance that doesn’t fall within the stereotypical Historical Romance tropes. It was also fascinating to read about phrenology, and the science behind the thought that personality traits were determined by the bumps and contours of a persons skull!
Ella was intelligent, headstrong and determined and Gabriel was charming, confident and supportive. Together they set off to prove that Thomas Bauer, a phrenologist with a serious debt problem, was up to no good, and ended up falling for each other along the way. The romance was more of a secondary plot to unraveling the mystery around Mr. Bauer, but it was swoon worthy nonetheless. It was also twisty, I wasnt expecting as many twists as the mystery unfolded!
The only thing I missed was the spice. The romance was top notch, but I wanted more than just a few kisses. However, if you’re one who prefers no spice in your regency romances, then this one for you!

I'm always drawn to books written by Sarah E. Ladd. I've been reading her books since her first couple of books. I love the bits of mystery within her stories, the great character development and the sweet love story woven throughout it all.
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook of this one. Fiona Hardingham is the narrator and she did a fantastic job. I kept thinking that her voice sounded familiar so I went searching to see what other books she's narrated. I have listened to a handful of the books she's narrated. Katherine Reay's, Pepper Basham's, Gabrielle Meyer's, and I recognized several other books that she's narrated. I've really enjoyed her style and how she brings the stories to life!
Ella and Gabriel are childhood friends and they are brought back together after many years in trying to find answers to some mysteries they've both encountered. They keep uncovering things that are slowly helping them move forward to solving their questions. They are both questioning the workings of one person and the lies and uncertainties surrounding him. Bring in several other characters and they have to navigate many unknowns and polite society and Ella appeasing her dad in his plans for her future, and Gabriel and Ella are trying to understand the growing feelings between them.
Lots happening that flows together nicely and leads to some shocking revelations! An adventure for sure awaits these characters. Be careful who you trust. Everyone could be a suspect. Ella and Gabriel need to watch their steps and hopefully stay alive!
Content: Clean. Some talk of death. Some mild moments of peril. Nothing more than a few sweet kisses.

Sarah Ladd's Regency romance novels are sure to be a lovely escape for this reader. She takes a strong heroine, combines a piece of history and weaves it into a compelling storyline.
The bit of history was about something called phrenology (a 19th-century pseudoscience, founded by Franz Joseph Gall, which claimed that personality traits and intelligence could be determined by measuring bumps and indentations on the human skull). So interesting (and scary!) to read about this "science".
Ella Wilde feels pressure to marry due to her father's declining health and her desire to open a school for girls at her family property.
While the entire novel kept my attention, the last 25% was the best part as pieces were unraveled.

4.7 stars (5/10 hearts). This was my first book by Sarah E. Ladd, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was very impressed! I requested this ARC because of the focus on phrenology, and I was delighted by how much this actually figured. The story was more mystery than romance (with no miscommunication trope!) and the plot was well done, with some twists that really surprised me. Ella was a good leading lady, and I appreciated how nice she was, though I was a tiny bit annoyed by her repeated infringement of social conventions that would cost her a lot to break, especially given her already doubly fragile reputation. Still, she wasn't over-the-top unconventional, which was what I expected from the title, and she was certainly thoughtful and sweet. Gabriel was one of my favourite heroes so far though—so loyal, kind, and honest—such a great solicitor/thieftaker! Also, I really liked all the descriptions of the clothes—so many colours! I will definitely be reading this author again.

A first for me by this author. I enjoyed it so much and hope to read more of her work.
This is the story of Ella Wilde. Ella lost her mother at the age of ten. Being raised only by her father Ella was well educated and well loved. Ella's mother wanted her to be educated as she was. Ella wanted to prove that her mother did not commit suicide and she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps in other areas.
Ella's father became sickly and thought it best for Ella to be married so she would not lose the school for boys that her mother's father started so many years ago. He thought if Ella married a man who could take it over and take care of her things would be ok. Ella had different thoughts about this though and fell in love with a different man. She didn't want to be in a loveless marriage to a much older man.
This book has a few things going on. Ella's best friend falling in love with a bad man. Of course she didn't know he was bad but Ella had her suspicions. Also a friend from the past comes and turns Ella's world upside down. Well sort of. She falls in love with him. Confides in him.
There is suspense in this story, love, kidnapping. It's one that will keep you turning the pages to find out what comes next. To see if Ella can find her true love and solve her mother's mysterious death. Helping her best friend who was taken in by a house guest of the Wilde's. Just being there for her. Phoebe and Ella have been lifelong friends and let a man come between them. The faces of love.
This was a fun read that taught me about phrenology. A subject I had not heard about. It was the main setting for this story. The Phrenology is the theory that a person's traits and intellectual abilities can be found by learning the shape and size of their skull. How ridiculous is that? But at this time it was believed to be true.
A very enjoyable read/listen. This is a clean romance story. At times it was intense. Other times it was a bit romantic. A well written regency era story.

Loved this story!!! A unique clean regency romance you’ll be delighted to read. The title says it all. You won’t find your typical regency era lady, Ella is truly an unconventional lady, and I love her much more because of it 😊 This description of her is true to her character: “truth and facts were the backbone of everything she did — not emotions and sentiment.”
The story has enough tension, twists and turns, and secrets, to occupy your attention from beginning to end. The concept of phrenology explored and discussed throughout is a fascinating one. I’ve never read a regency story so unique and different. I love when authors take their time to research interesting historical topics to incorporate in their stories making them much more appealing than “boy meets girl/girl meets boy” and fall in love. I like stories that explore engaging or curious topics not known much of, or at least new to me.

Gabriel Rowe with his “alluring energy and vibrant confidence” gave Ella the confidence she needed when things got a little too much to bear. And with Ella’s determination and desire for the truth they embark “in a journey” together with one goal in mind, exposing the concept of phrenology for the falsehood it was, and through “their journey” they come to realize they’re perfect for each other. Through the story they encountered many turns they did not expect and so is the reader. With revelations that ultimately leads to the happily ever after the reader expects but not before coming across so much more than imagined. That climax was outstandingly done by author Ladd!
And the romance, soft and beautiful…
“If we are to speak of hearts, then allow me to say that my heart, and everything I am, belongs to you if you will have it. Whether you knew it or not, you took possession of it weeks ago. In fact, when I was faced with the thought that I might lose you forever, I came to realize… that I love you.” (Sigh)
Mrs. Chatterly was a favorite character of mine, so kind and sweet just like a mother 🥹 Mr. Keatley was another great character as well, always a loving and supportive father.
And I loved what Ella’s mother wanted for all the students, “to see the world as she did: as a marvel to be studied and a treasure to be discovered.” The desire of my heart for my grandchildren ❤️
And I can’t end this review without sharing some quotes I loved…
“The fear of a thing is sometimes worse than the actual event. We build things up in our minds, but rarely do they meet our expectations.”
“You can’t change opinions, but you also can’t permit them to hold you captive.”

Quite the unique read with mystery, suspense, and plenty of romance!
Ella has always been different than the women of her age. Her sights aren’t set on marriage and romance, but rather on clearing her late mother’s name and opening an all-girls school. But neither of these goals are easy, especially when a newcomer, phrenologist Thomas Bauer, seems to bring trouble with him. At the same time as his arrival, Ella is being persuaded to secure a husband before her father’s health continues to decline.
Between the questions arising around Bauer’s visit, being forced to entertain the attention of a new suitor, and her lingering questions about her mother’s past, Ella could certainly use some help. So when Gabriel Rowe reveals he also has questions regarding the new phrenologist’s identity, the two begin working together. Ella has always been different than the women of her age. Her sights aren’t set on marriage and romance, but rather on clearing her late mother’s name and opening an all-girls school. But neither of these goals are easy, especially when a newcomer, phrenologist Thomas Bauer, seems to bring trouble with him. At the same time as his arrival, Ella is being persuaded to secure a husband before her father’s health continues to decline.
Between the questions arising around Bauer’s visit, being forced to entertain the attention of a new suitor, and her lingering questions about her mother’s past, Ella could certainly use some help. So when Gabriel Rowe reveals he also has questions regarding the new phrenologist’s identity, the two begin working together. I normally love Sarah E Ladd’s books, but her last couple books were just okay. This one was odd and I almost didn’t preorder it. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. They didn’t feel fully developed. It was like they were just there. I didn’t really care for Ella and Gabriel’s love story. It seemed to show up out of nowhere and suddenly they loved each other. I wanted more. Phrenology was an even bigger part of the story than I hoped and I found that whole thing to be so weird. The whole storyline dragged and I didn’t really feel invested. I missed the faith content and the lovely characters that her older books had. Overall, I was disappointed with this book.

This audiobook is well done. The narrator has a very pleasant voice, and uses it to differentiate between characters, which helps to bring the story to life. She has a natural reading pace and intonation, leading to a great listening experience.
As for the plot, I found the inclusion of phenology very intriguing. The mystery element was woven into the phrenology storyline seamlessly and I enjoyed tagging along with Ella and Gabriel throughout their investigation. I did feel that it took a little time to get invested in the story, but I encourage readers to continue on-it’s worth it. I appreciated that the romance element didn’t overpower the rest of the story and that both the romance and language were clean.

This enjoyable book is an example of historical fiction at its very best. This Regency Romance was full of passion while remaining sweet. I quickly became invested in Ella and Gabriel’s relationship which blossomed into a satisfying romance.
I enjoyed spending time in Ella’s world. She came of age in England during the early 1800’s. She was raised by parents who loved and valued her. Education and the pursuit of knowledge was a prominent part of their lives and of the storyline in this very well written book.
As modern science was trying to get a foothold amongst the upper crust and educated, the pseudo science of Phrenology gained popularity. The practice of Phrenology attracted not just followers, but schemers and scammers alike. This led to crimes being committed and mysteries to solve.
My favorite side character was Mrs. Chatterly, the very best mother figure for Ella. Mrs. Chatterly was caring, nurturing and affectionate, while also being protective, watchful and very supportive.
This book was a joy to read and I highly recommend it!

I’m always excited to hear when a new Sarah E. Ladd book is going to be published! This story kept my attention to the very end. It delved into a subject I had never really known much about, no matter how strange it seems now in these times. I loved Ella and her strong ways to fight for the truth to protect those around her, especially her family and friends. An Unconventional Lady by Sarah E. Ladd was a feel-good read. Readers will enjoy spending time with Ella and Gabriel. The slow-moving romance was built on a slow trust that developed as they tried to solve the case of Mr. Bauer. Ladd does a wonderful job at creating a romance that didn’t just happen, but developed over time, which I really enjoyed. As for the plot, I loved the mystery element of trying to figure out what was really going on. Ella and Gabriel knew something was off, but they just couldn’t put their finger on it. I loved how they worked together and defended each other throughout the entire story. As for the character of Ella, Ladd did a wonderful job at crafting a character who was strong and stayed true to her values even when others around her frown at her and what her mother was supposedly was. As for the setting, readers will fall in love with the boy’s school, but the possibly of a girls’ school that Ella wanted to create in memory of her mother. Overall, An Unconventional Lady by Sarah E. Ladd was a interesting, yet mysterious novel with sweet characters that readers will enjoy getting to know.

This was an absolute delight to listen to! Ella’s determination to see justice done was very strong. Her upbringing made her a sympathetic character and her motivation was understandable. Gabriel was a fantastic foil for her. I couldn’t decide which of them I enjoyed following more.

4.5 Stars An Unconventional Lady is a clean historical romance with a healthy side of pseudoscience and mystery. The tale hooked me from page one with the much gossiped about phrenology pamphlet to the secret rendezvous in the conservatory until the thrilling conclusion of the mystery. Ella Wilde is a likeable and active protagonist with an equally dislikeable nemesis, Thomas Bauer. Although the setting at the large Keatley Hall was not particularly unique, I found the backdrop of the natural philosopher’s symposium fresh and entertaining. Phrenology (if you don't know about this “science”, you should read this novel) seems so silly today, but was taken entirely differently in the regency era. I recommend this to fans of clean historical romance and fans of Sarah E Ladd’s previous novels.

I will tell you up front that I’m not ever going to choose a book that centers around rich, privileged, “royal” characters. That’s just not my thing. I like everyday people doing extraordinary things and having a happy ending. So, going into this book I kept saying “give it a chance”. But I had heard great things and had never read the author so I wanted to give it my all.
I have to say, I was hooked from the beginning. Anytime there is a historical fiction where women are being belittled, ignored or dismissed….I’m all in because this female main character better come out swinging! And OH BABY did this one ever!!!!
The mystery aspect of the book also drew me in. I love a good “who’s the real bad guy” storyline and I got it with this read.

BE CURIOUS!
I enjoyed this unique Regency-era that takes us into the little-known, scientific world of phrenology, the idea that a person's personality was predetermined by the shape of their head.
Our heroine, Ella, is charming but headstrong, and resolved to clear the name of her misunderstood, late mother. I appreciated her frank manner and tenacious spirit. My favorite touch was how the soft whisper of her late Mom’s wise words were ever-present in her mind.
Precious and heartwarming!
I adored our hero’s honorable intentions, and willingness to fight for those who couldn’t fight for themselves.

If you love a Regency story with a thoughtful heroine, a bit of mystery, and a friends-to-more connection, this one is such a delightful read.
Ella Wilde is curious, intelligent, and never afraid to ask questions-traits that make her stand out in a society that doesn’t always welcome unconventional women. When her childhood friend Gabriel Rowe returns to her life, the two find themselves drawn into a complicated situation involving reputation, unanswered questions, and a figure whose ideas have captivated far too many people.
Watching Ella and Gabriel work together to sort truth from deception made this story especially engaging. There’s a gentle romance woven through the pages along with just enough intrigue to keep things interesting.

An Unconventional Lady by Sarah E. Ladd is a beautifully written story. It’s a low spice regency era novel. There is enough mystery to keep you focused on what is going on so you are trying to figure out the mystery right along with the characters. I found myself going “ohhhhh” when certain things were revealed. It was a fun book to read. I don’t think of this book as a quick read because you really want to pay attention to what is going on and who the different characters are in the story. It is definitely a meatier read for the historical genre but I feel like most of Sarah’s books are like that. She puts a lot of information and background to her places and characters so you can fully be immersed into the world of the story.
It was an engaging read from beginning to end. If you enjoy historical fiction then I think you will like this book. It has all your favorite elements, a little romance, some mystery and a strong female character that questions the norms of her era.

What I found most interesting about this novel is seeing the contrast between wgat women are used to in modern times vs a hundred+ years ago. Time has changed views in a lot of ways & I’m grateful to be able to participate in academic thought as a woman today.

If you’re a fan of regency error mold breakers, this book is for you. I love nothing more than a headstrong, intellectual female protagonist, with a complicated background within an academic and societal background.
The only thing I was not a fan of in this book, was writing the internal monologue or actual dialogue of Ella saying or thinking she isn’t naive, and then being one of the most naive people out there.
Nevertheless, I loved her, I loved our love interest, and I loved the premise that felt both realistic in a pseudoscience and philosophical idea. The twists were doubled and I was duped at one point but only slightly.
A fun read that I ate up in two nights

I just finished listening to the audiobook of An Unconventional Lady by Sarah E. Ladd. It was simply marvelous. She wrote yet another twisty-turny mystery that had me staying tuned to the end with bated breath. Fiona Hardingham was the narrator and the many voices she portrayed was exquisitely Regency. I highly recommend this book!!

Oh my goodness, I love this story! The setting is classic, yet the characters are so fresh and fun. Ella is a force to be reckoned with and when she runs into Gabriel it makes for a superb mystery solving duo. The main topic that this book revolves around is phrenology. Wait. What? I had no idea what that meant or that it was a popular study from history. Basically it was thought that the shape of the head determined a person's character traits. I was totally fascinated with the whole idea and the author does an excellent job at not making it boring and weaving it into the mystery side of things. The romance is so well written and sweet, it really adds to the plot. It isn't the central focus but it makes a delightful addition. I also love how the ending took a few turns that were unexpected as all good mysteries must do. So for me this book had it all and I think is one of the best that Sarah E. Ladd has written. I highly recommend!
