Sometimes the thing that holds you together ends up causing the most damage . . .

A gasp of air seemed to slice through Anika on its way in, and she quickly backtracked so that the emission wouldn’t give her away. Desperately casting her eyes about for something else to focus on—anything else—Anika took in the scene around her. Atop the hay-strewn ground the summer grass was a tender green, naïve blossoms just poking their heads out to see if winter had finally passed. If it was safe to come out. Those innocent blooms didn’t know how cruel life could be. They didn’t know that life sometimes lurked in the shadows, waiting for you to decide the coast was clear before pouncing.

Anika leaned back against the barn, flattening her hands against its splintered solidity. She’d always loved old barns: their reliability, their timelessness, their constancy. No matter what they looked like on the outside, peeling or freshly painted, crumbling or just constructed, you always knew what you were getting; a barn was still a barn.

If only people were the same.

Misty has been ‘scribbling’ since she learned how, but it was during her angst-ridden college years that her love for writing began to flower. She spent countless hours revising poetry inspired by unrequited love, and has the binder to prove it.

Misty suffers from a particularly potent case of OCD (obsessive creativity disorder). When she’s not writing or procrastinating an edit, she’s sewing, cross-stitching, or baking. She also boasts several collections, including a deck of cards from everywhere she’s been, enough bovine décor to supply Chick-Fil-A for life, and seventeen versions of the board game Monopoly (at last count).

Though Misty currently resides in Maryland with her husband and three minions, she will always call Utah home—and insist that eastern “mountains” are actually hills. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Misty served a French-Speaking mission in Washington, D.C.

You can check out her blog, Facebook author page, or contact her via email. If she doesn’t respond, don’t take it personal . . . she’s probably writing her next book. Or, more likely, taking a nap.

This one sucked me in. I loathed Edmond for much of this book and wasn't sure the author could make me love him by the end but somehow she pulled it off. Great book!

Content: Clean (one mild swear, mild innuendo)

Wow, this one is even better, in my opinion, than canon! Sorry, Jane.

I was never a lover of Fanny Price. She just comes across as too "goody-two-shoes" for me. I couldn't find passion or depth of feelings when she is treated like a servant, especially by the aunt. I wanted to read anger, jealously, exasperation, etc. I know she deserved the best of endings and did finally get it but I have not found many souls in my existence who live life so perfectly with so few, if any, rewards.

This book sucked me in and if I were younger I would have read deep into the night yesterday to reach the ending. We read both POVs: Anika Sky Price's and Edmund Bertram's and the author is gifted with being able to portray such beautifully.

This story is a modern variation of Mansfield Park, needless to say, set for the most part on the Bertram's property on the edge of Yellowstone Park. They rent out their four cabins and take tourists on horse rides through the local scenery. The family is not related to the Prices but "adopt" Ani as the mothers were best friends in college and the need arises.

Mr. Price is an alcoholic abusive father. His treatment of his family leads Ani to have debilitating nightmares. After she moves in, at age 6, with the Bertrams Edward becomes her protector, often not only going to her as she cries out during a nightmare but holding her and even staying with her to assure that she sleeps peacefully after that. You know, you must know, that they fall in love and even with both in denial, it is more than a brotherly/sisterly kind of love.

At age 19 to his age 25, both are graduating. He skips his college graduation ceremony to come back home for her HS graduation. If you know the story, she works as hard as any servant or hired hand. With the tourist season about to begin ENTER their first reservation for this summer Marcella and Henri Craefort. Yes, the beautiful and charming siblings soon wreak havoc with family peace and with ODC's relationship.

Everyone but Ani and Edward can see what they feel for each other. However his father has lectured him about how he is too old for Ani but he is determined to keep their "friendship" in place. She soon finds that she can't stay to witness where his relationship with Marcella is headed. So she goes home with her brother, Liam, after his visit.

The emotional ride in this book not only kept me turning pages but had me with blurry eyes on more than one occasion. Misty sure can write a mean romance!

Finally, for me, to top it all off is a sweet epilogue. This book is not MA so I can recommend it to all my JAFF friends. I hope you love it as much I as did. I have read one of Misty's other JAFF variations, Pride's Prejudice, and loved that. I will add her other book to my TBR pile.

This book was a little longer than others, but once I started it I didn't want to put it down! It's been a long time since I've read Mansfield Park by Jane Austen so the storyline wasn't as familiar to me as some of her others. But now I want to go re-read Mansfield Park.

Ani Price was taken from an abusive home when she was 6 years old and sent to live with the family of one of her mother's friends. The only person who can console her through her nightmares is 11-year-old Edmund.

Several years later when Edmund returns from college, they still have a really close relationship. Ani is now 19 and hopes that Edmund will see her as the woman she is becoming. But then Marcella, a French beauty, arrives with her brother Henri. Marcella sets her sights on Edmund and he quickly falls under her spell.

I loved how strong Ani is. She has been through so much in her short lifetime. Through it all, Edmund is her lifeline until he's lost to her, too. And then she continues to find strength to keep going.

I have loved all of Misty Dawn Pulsipher's books and I hope she has plans to write more of these Jane Austen re-tellings!

After enjoying this author's two previous books, I had really been looking forward to reading this one. Despite being familiar with the story, I still had a hard time putting the book down until I reached the end!

Ok So I loved Pride's Prejudice and I loved Persuaded. This just topped it! Yes this was definitely worth the wait to read! While loosely based on Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, I definitely fell in love with the characters! Anika or Ani and Edmund captured the story from beginning to end. While I knew from the original Mansfield Park what would happen this had me on edge too much! I wanted to hit Edmund over the head a few times and snap him back into reality. But I was patient and it paid off. Great storyline and ending. Clean and definitely worth reading!!

This story flowed flawlessly from the beginning, pulling me all the way to the end. I really loved Pulsipher's Pride's Prejudice, but I think this one must top it. Loved Ani and Ed. Loved the dynamics between them.
Sweet, clean read.

More Mansfield Park JAFF? I must be dreaming! And it's about time. Hopefully this isn't the absolute trash that The Trouble with Flirting became.

“Can you cut out that ‘Miss Price’ stuff? It makes me feel like a spinster from an Austen novel.”

I honestly don’t remember downloading half the titles on my Kindle shelf, but maybe I should go through it again and clean it out because I obviously didn’t remember how bad Misty Dawn Pulsipher’s books are.

Because Mansfield Park is one of the lesser known Austen novels, I feel like you can take more liberties with the story without worrying about people getting all up in arms about it. That being said, the accents were just ridiculous. T.R.’s (Sir Thomas) redneck drawl and ze Craefort’s French accents are enough to give anyone a headache. And then there’s the romance 🙄

“I tell you zis simply because I cannot bear to see you ’urt like zis anymore.” His voice cracked at the end. “You want ’im. ‘E wants ’er. I want you. We are all stuck on zis . . . ’ow you say . . .” He mimed something spinning around.
“Merry-go-round,” Anika supplied, trying to ignore Henri’s brash confession, trying to stamp out the impulse to add that Edmund wanted her too—even if it wasn’t in the way she would have liked.
“Oui, merry-go-round. It is dizzying, no?”

Mansfield Park has never been my favorite Austen novel; I mean I know context and times are a-changin and all that, but it’s still hard to get excited reading about kissing cousins. (Also, my weird word association brain always links Fanny Price with Fanny Pack which is just distracting.) But this whole will-they-won’t-they driving the entire book is just too much. Subtly is not this book’s strong suit.

Once again I have truly enjoyed Misty Dawn Pulsipher's modern telling of a Austen classic. Have to say I have not finished Mansfield Park yet, but I will. Although I have to say I finished a Mansfield in 2 days. I had a love-hate liking if Edmund, but when he finally realized Anika is his one and only, duh, took him some time it made my heart soar. Anika kept him at a distance to not have her heart broken by him again, but alas she opened her heart after a heart stopping moment when Edmund was in an accident and Anika and his family weren't sure of his fate. What a great modern retell and a little more info through Part 4. Love, love, love it!!!

At the age of six Anika Price goes to stay with the Bertrams. Edmund becomes her saviour, turning in her part to love. Then the Craeforts (i.e. Crawfords) arrive. Really couldn't take to the characters, I much preferred the original. And I really dislike reading books which have speech in the vernacular as in the French Craeforts. Two stars for just about finishing the book.

Excellent! I enjoyed this more (dare I say) than the original, because we got to really know & understand the characters & their motivations. What a sweet couple- poor clueless & confused Edmund & long-suffering, heartbroken Ani. So glad they made it right in the end. Great work Misty!

An excellent and authentic modern variation

Mansfield Park is perhaps the least well known of Austen’s books and maybe the least enjoyed with the heroine seeming too docile and the hero too wet for many readers. I am a huge fan of the Austen original and I was equally impressed by Ms Pulsipher’s modern adaptation.

This is no easy read with a very damaged heroine (Anika Price) and a hero who falls far short of the title for much of the book (Edmund Price). The path to a final resolution is angst filled and deeply romantic, indeed for much of the story it seems impossible for it to resolve itself.

Ms Pulsipher takes her readers on an immense emotional rollercoaster but the ride is definitely worth the tension and the tears.

This was going really well, and I was actually enjoying this adaptation until about 80% in. And then Edmund and Anika just went in a direction I didn't like.

Ok this book is total beach summer read to me. Super fun by the end. I'm not crazy about the real Mansfield story but this book fit the fluff I was looking for.

Great contemporary retelling of one of my favorite Austen books!

Misty Dawn has done it again. I love how she takes Austen's classics and spins them into contemporary stories that breathe a life of their own. Not only are they well-written, with realistic characters, and well-thought-out plot, but they are thoroughly enjoyable & addictive read, too! This is a new favorite, That I'm sure I'll read over and over again as I have her other two. I'll happily read anything from Misty, no matter how long out takes to come out!

I did really like this book. And I kind of didn't like it. It was good! But a little obnoxious with the accents. That's probably my biggest complaint. The main characters were great though, and I loved the setting. It was definitely worth the wait, and I look forward to Misty's next one. In the meantime, I might check out Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. Who knows, I might like this one even more after that!

Pulsipher's lyrical style and gift for humor are fully evident in this modern retelling of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. Anika Price is a character with depth and inner beauty readers will love and admire. Her best friend and love interest Edmund is quite literally the smoking hot fireman with a soft heart. Rediscovering the romance between Fanny Price (Ani) and Edmund will keep romance lovers and Austenites reading way past their bedtime.

Another great take on Austen

I love this modern take on Mansfield Park. Pulsipher makes just enough alteration to make the story feel real in a modern setting but true enough to the original for this Austen fan.

This one was not as good as the other books from this author. I started to get a little tired of the Ani and Edmund back and forth and mostly their no communication. I also didn’t feel like they had any chemistry. At points, I also found this book a little boring.

Clean romance

This was a very nice, clean, romantic story. Great characters, and good writing and editing. As far as the domestic violence, I wish there were bigger consequences.
