Four Pieces of Light: The Sun Keeper

Rate this book
Gods, contrary to popular belief, are surprisingly messy when they die.

In Varennes, the sun has vanished. As it turns out, someone has murdered the Sun Keeper, which is an impolite act at the best of times, and these are not the best of times. Julien, an immortal being, is tasked by the ruler of the realms with an venture into the afterlife and gather what remains of the Sun Keeper’s soul.

His search leads him to odd places and odder beings. He’s forced to engage in small talk with a ghost who can’t remember her name, dodge mildly apocalyptic artifacts of dubious usefulness, and confront gods with bad tempers and worse opinions. Along the way, Julien uncovers old griefs and fractured histories that stretch back to a time few remember clearly and forward into a future that seems to fray at the seams.

At once witty and elegiac, Four Pieces of The Sun Keeper is a fantasy of small silences and cosmic scope, complete with administrative afterlives and the occasional spectacular explosion.

🌅 When Fantasy Gets Weird (In the Best Possible Way)

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (5 stars)

Genre: Fantasy, Humor, Mythology

Reading Status: ✅ Read

Sometimes you read a book that makes you go "just one minute here, you can DO that in fantasy?" This is one of those books. 🤯

The premise sounds straightforward:
Someone offed the poor Sun Keeper, so immortal Julien has to collect the scattered soul pieces from the afterlife. But then H.V. takes that setup and runs in directions I never saw coming.( Did you, I didn't think so 🤔)

The afterlife as a bureaucratic nightmare? Genius. Julien having to make small talk with a nameless ghost while dodging divine artifacts that might end the world? Even better. Gods throwing tantrums like cosmic toddlers? I'm here for all of it. 😂

What really hooked me was Julien's voice. He's been around forever but still feels genuinely surprised by the absurdity he encounters. His journey forces him to dig into old wounds and fractured histories, which gives the story real emotional weight beneath all the cosmic comedy. 💔

The writing has this great rhythm its, never rushed, never boring. H.V. lets moments breathe when they need to, whether it's a quiet character beat or one of those "spectacular explosions" mentioned in the synopsis. ⚡

I keep thinking about the phrase "small silences and cosmic scope" because it perfectly captures what this book does. It's huge in scale but intimate in feeling, which is not easy to pull off.

Already excited to see what comes next in this world. This feels like the start of something special. 🌟

Perfect for:
Anyone tired of the same old fantasy tropes, readers who like their mythology with a side of absurdity, people who want character development with their cosmic adventures.

Thank you to Alyx H.V. and VoraciousReaders for the gifted copy of this book. I was more than happy to leave my honest opinion! 🙏🏾 Woo Hoo!!

"One cannot simply walk the path of legends without humbling moments of reckoning."

I am absolutely in love with this book. I’ve read thousands of books in my life, but I’ve never been so captivated and intrigued by a character the way I was with Julien. With every chapter, my curiosity deepened and my investment in his story grew stronger.

The characters in this book are so rich and original. I love Lan, especially when she sheds her mask and shows her true nature. She is a total badass.

This is fantasy in the style of Tolkien or Sanderson. It doesn’t rely on endless world-building to hook you—instead, it strikes the perfect balance, pulling you in with just the right amount of depth and detail. That said, this isn’t a light read. Like Tolkien, it’s heavy, layered, and rich—a book that demands you sink into it fully.
And like all the best fantasy novels, be prepared for the final hundred pages. There was one moment that hit me so hard I literally had to close the book, take a deep breath, and say: WTF just happened?

If you’re looking for a sweeping, consequential fantasy with a character who will leave a mark on your soul, this is it.

This is an interesting story told in a way that reminds me of the aboriginal Dreamtime stories. It seems immortals or gods can die, if you know how to destroy their soul. Someone has killed a sun god & his soul is fractured into three parts. Julien & Cassius are tasked with collecting the threads to find who did it from his last moments. They may not like each other, but they travel through different countries & realms to achieve their aim. Will they succeed or will the culprit get rid of them & get away with it? This is an amazingly descriptive book so you can picture everything the author is trying to convey.

Unique, Beautiful, Compelling

This might be the most original book that I have read in some time. And one of the most beautifully written. The author’s descriptions sing, and the characters are well drawn. Some may remind you of people that you know, and others of people you wish you knew. One of the few books that I plan to enjoy re-reading, probably more than once.
