Vengeance is all that remains in Thiran’s mind, after his lover was brutally murdered by the infamous Pirates who roam the island of Ceylon. Thiran’s path of vengeance is marked with bloodshed and suffering, as he attempts to grapple with the scars of his troubled past.
200 years after the Sri Lankan Civil War, the island has yet to see peace. Countless wars have been waged throughout the many years, leaving behind a rubble wasteland filled with ruins of the past, haunting memories, and a tragic fate befallen to those who survive.
Above all the many evils in this land, there is a cruel being with extraordinary abilities and a superiority complex, who intends to reshape this world into one that depicts him as a god.
This was a poetically written, dark-fantasy story about one man’s journey for vengeance. This book was a first of its kind for me. A little bit of mysterious magic that I’d love to get more of an understanding of later in the series. The world building was great, it was really easy to imagine in my mind as I read. The chapters were a little long for my taste but otherwise it was an exciting, adventurous story. Thank you to the author for sending me a copy in exchange for a review!
Thank you to the author for an ARC of The Accursed Venge Seeker. Here are my thoughts!
Thiran’s lover was murdered by pirates, and he will stop at nothing to seek his revenge. Carrying the trauma of his past, he must travel through Ceylon, being reminded of the horrors of his youth. He faces several obstacles and realizes his path may have a much greater meaning than he initially thought.
I love a sci-fi novella. Sometimes diving into a full-fledged sci fi novel can be a little overwhelming, but novellas always end up being some of my favourite reading overall. The dystopian subgenre works particularly well I think. This small book, packs a very big punch. The characters are fully fleshed out, the world carries the history of the Sri Lankan Civil War, which was used as an inspiration for some areas of the book, and the plot is both visceral and heartfelt.
I love when a book challenges me to learn something. Admittedly, I didn’t know much about the Civil War in Sri Lanka, but I was part way through the book when I felt this urge to research, and I did. I learned a lot and it inspired a great conversation with the author about his past and family. It’s moments like these that make me particularly appreciative of reading and bookstagram for the connections.
Now this book has some violent scenes and carries a lot of generational trauma with Thiran but I think it pairs perfectly with the main characters goals and path. The writing didn’t feel like that of a newbie, and I think we can see some great things from this author in the future!
Excellent story line and the writing was fantastic. The plot was strong and the characters well done
The story follow Thiran a morally gray character who embarks on a quest to avenge the death of his lover Jaya who was murdered by pirates, as well as the one who burned down his village. While fighting with whom he considers the enemy, he embraces the darkness an uses the dark side.
The world building was great, nothing to complicated for those who avoid reading fantasy because they struggle with world building.
The magic system is something that I hope the author further explores in the next book , I'm still trying to understand it, but also, something that is not complex.
Favorite quote: "“The world may be broke and dark, but that doesn't mean we have to abide by its gloom".
Recommend exploring the writing of this new author! Definitely someone you may want to check out if you love dark fantasy, battles and morally gray characters.
This dark fantasy novella was a fun palate cleanser between some larger stories.
We follow Thira, an anti-hero, morally gray MMC. He has powers of strength and healing, which reside in the darkness, and are a gift from his ancestors. The ghost of his lover also haunts him.
This story has instances of civil war (based on the real civil war in Sri Lanka), generational trauma, grief and a bucket full of violence, but somehow it is done with respect for each theme.
"Nothing of the human condition is set in stone, except death."
Thank you to the author V.K. Thiran, for selecting me to be an ARC reader for the novella of The Accursed Venge Seeker.
🥊 The Book: Two centuries after the Sri Lankan Civil War, the island is scarred, haunted, and ruled by blood. Thiran, broken by the brutal murder of his lover Jaya, sets out on a vengeance-fueled path through pirates, warlords, and something far darker—a cruel being with godlike powers bent on reshaping the world.
💪 The Bro: Fantasy can get bogged down with heavy world-building, but this book? It’s tight, accessible, and still full of texture. The ruins of war feel lived in. The history hits hard.
⸻
🥊 ROUND 1: First Impressions • A slim book, but it wastes no time—blood, grief, and fire set the stage. • Thiran isn’t your typical hero. He’s fueled by vengeance, scarred by trauma, and willing to embrace darkness to get what he wants. • The Sri Lankan backdrop gives the story weight, adding real-world echoes to the fantasy ruins.
⸻
🥊 ROUND 2: In the Thick of It • The magic system is sharp. Distinct, creative, and never overwhelming. • Loved the twist of “the hero” being the villain; it flips the usual fantasy script and adds real teeth. • World-building is streamlined: evocative without turning into a textbook. Perfect for fantasy readers who don’t want to wade through twenty maps and glossaries.
⸻
🥊 ROUND 3: The Home Stretch • Characters are fleshed out, and the moral grayness makes you constantly question who to root for. • The plot is visceral, heartfelt, and steeped in scars of history and war.
⸻
🔥 FINAL BELL: The ARC Bro Scorecard 🔥 🥊 Unanimous Decision – The Accursed Venge Seeker is a lean, brutal fantasy tale that blends vengeance, history, and magic with heart and blood. If you want fantasy without the bloat and a story that punches above its size, this one delivers.
