As a father of a daughter, the thought of her eventually entering the dating world has always filled me with a mixture of excitement and, let’s be honest, a good deal of anxiety. How do I prepare her? How do I protect her heart? And perhaps most importantly, how do I discern the right kind of man for her? Robert Woeger’s "So You Want To Date My Daughter" is very comprehensive and has biblically-sound answers I've been searching for. This isn't just a book; it's a one-stop source for understanding what the ideal man for my daughter truly looks like, guided by God's principles.
My biggest apprehension when diving into any religious book is always the theological underpinnings. I am thrilled to report that Woeger delivers excellent, Biblically-sourced theology throughout, with abundant Scripture citations to back up every point. I particularly appreciated the balanced approach to Biblical gender roles. While the book certainly teaches and upholds these roles (which the Bible teaches), it does so in a way that respects and elevates women (which the Bible also teaches), never veering into patriarchalism.
Furthermore, the book masterfully balances the critical need for the pursuit of perfection with an abundance of mercy and grace. It doesn't present a rigid, legalistic framework, but rather a loving, guidance-filled pathway toward God-honoring relationships. This book is an essential read not just for fathers like me, desperate to navigate these waters, but also for young men seeking to honor God in their pursuit of a godly woman, and for young women eager to know what a true, Christ-pursuing man looks like. It's a fantastic read that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone serious about God's design for relationships and marriage.
