How often do you read a book that makes you better? I don't mean Putt Like a Pro in Two Weeks. I mean a better person with a goal to raise others up.
This is a series of biographical essays of women whose inventions or discoveries were minimized or stolen, credit appropriated, and futures blocked. White women, Black women, immigrants, impoverished or high-born, that double X chromosome (also discovered by a woman) marked the path with obstacles.
As I read each essay, I was struck with the "any given Tuesday" type normalcy of the history. It angered me. The only knock on the writing was that each woman's tale fell into the same pattern. Because that pattern was, and is still, the pattern.
I'm not a scientific publisher or a research foundation, so what can I do? What can you do? Each of us can spend our energy making sure no one is silenced. How many ideas never bear fruit because the idea came in a dress? How many second ideas never happen? Ms. Starling is a voice for that effort of recognizing and raising the next generation of pioneers.
