you miao basically carried this entire volume on his back while being booked and busy and very important. this volume worked so much better for me than the previous ones because it constantly felt like it was balancing on the edge of disaster, which made it impossible to put down once things started going down.

it was sad watching the sworn brotherhood fall apart. they could still recognize each other’s honor and sincerity while being fundamentally incapable of standing on the same ground anymore. they understood why the other believed what they believed, and that mutual understanding somehow made the inevitable breakup feel even more miserable. the novel leans hard into the idea of loyalty and honor being placed above personal bonds, and instead of romanticizing that choice, it shows how devastating it can be when relationships are built on values that no longer align.

i am also deeply suspicious of whatever state nie dan is going to be in next volume, and by suspicious i mean bracing myself for something unpleasant, because this story does not strike me as the kind that suddenly decides to be merciful.

as for zhao chao, i genuinely love him as a character in a way reserved for fictional men who are clearly doing their best while making everything worse. sometimes i cannot help but root for that pitiful man wholeheartedly, and other times im wondering what the fuck is going on in that head of his. but being an emperor is clearly not a job for the mentally well. i just find it sad.

If you like Chinese historical fiction with a committed and loving CP, please give this novel a try! It is not xianxia or wuxia but focuses on politics, economics, and military strategy (like QJJ, Golden Terrace, and The Fourteenth Year of Chengdu). I understand why some people might be turned off by a young protagonist who is immature and spoiled initially but that is only in the beginning of the story. If you've read anything by Fei Tian, you know he starts his MCs young and naive but they certainly don't stay that way.

By this volume, You Miao is an high ranking political/civil leader who is very smart and *somewhat* scheming but definitely for the good of the country. He has the unique position of being important in economic and civil/political matters while also having some influence in military strategy. You Miao has to navigate his love for Li Zhifeng, his country/the people, and his position/alliances. His heart is sincere and it's painful to see a few of his beloved relationships go sour. He carries the weight and responsibilities of so many people.

Reminder that this takes place at the end of the Northern Song reign and the beginning of the Southern Song reign after being defeated and driven south by the Tartars. So history tells us bad things to come...

Maybe spoilers/random thoughts:
-What's happening with Zhao Chao is killing me. This is not the direction I thought it was going to go with him
-IDK if it's the translation or what but it's so weird seeing terms like "amirite" "listen to some tunes" or "bro" in the Song Dynasty era
-The argument between Nie and YM really stressed me out I was almost in tears

In case anyone is wondering, volume 4 ebook is available on Kobo and I think also Smashwords. For some reason, this one and vol 3 are not available on Amazon yet. There will be six volumes total with only two out in print right now. Easiest access is the ebook versions.

this vol has a lot of politics and court shenanigans. li zhifeng is away at war for a chunk of time, but when they reunite its lovey dovey, pookie wookie with them again.

honestly, i really appreciate what fei tian is doing with zhao chao's character. i think he might be the most interesting character in the novel. he and meow meow were never meant to be ofc, but id read a spin-off novel about him and someone else. :3

4.5/5☆

“Who came up with this idea? That’s too evil.” Li Zhifeng was somewhat astonished.

“Me, of course. Who else?” You Miao Laughed.

"A man of valor can take responsibility, and that includes responsibility for all the consequences and changes that occur. Only cowards are overcautious, apprehensive, or too scared to face danger."

description

This book left me feeling heavy in the best and worst ways. Watching everything close in around You Miao was intense. He carries brilliance and burden so effortlessly on the surface. He smiles in public, jokes when it suits him, and lets people underestimate him, but every move is intentional. He’s managing grain shortages, planning military responses, navigating court politics, and still kneeling beside refugees with real compassion. It never feels like he’s chasing power. He wants stability. He wants to protect the people he chose. Seeing how much he sacrifices to hold everything together made me admire him even more.

Li Zhifeng affected me just as deeply. He’s blunt, disciplined, and terrifying in battle, but with You Miao he’s steady and deeply tender. His devotion shows in the way he stays, in the way he acts, in the way he makes himself a shield without hesitation. Together they feel like silk and steel, completely in sync. Their trust is absolute, built through shared risk and quiet understanding. And still, this volume leans into something painful and real. It’s so sad to see relationships slowly fall apart because people change. Responsibility changes people. Pressure changes people. You can feel the strain pressing in on them, and it made every private moment feel fragile and precious.

The political tension never lets up. Court debates, sealed edicts, whispers of betrayal, imprisonment, talk of abdication, and the return of figures who complicate everything. Much of the conflict unfolds through strategy and negotiation, which made the weight of leadership feel exhausting and real. Some choices don’t get neat answers, and that left me frustrated in a way that felt intentional. By the end, I felt emotionally drained but completely invested. I can’t wait for the next volume and see how this story concludes.

This is my favorite danmei series, hands down! The relationship between You Miao and Li Zhifeng is so real and mature—it’s not just romantic fluff, but something that feels deeply earned through trust, understanding, and shared hardship. Their dynamic is subtle, but full of emotion and meaning.

This volume leans heavily into the political scheming, and it does it so well. The plotting is smart and tense, but never confusing. Zhao Chao really comes into his own here, and it’s fascinating to read. There’s a complexity to him that’s both admirable and unsettling—he’s making powerful moves, but not all of them are clean or easy to justify. Every move has weight, and I was constantly on edge in the best way. You Miao really shines in this volume too—he’s constantly forced to make tough choices, and while the weight of them shows, his intelligence and foresight keep pushing things forward in ways that feel both strategic and deeply personal. Li Zifeng’s past becomes increasingly important, and it adds a whole new layer to his character. His growing command over the military and quiet rise in influence is incredibly satisfying to read—he’s coming into his own in a powerful, understated way that perfectly matches his personality. It’s a perfect blend of court politics, personal stakes, and character-driven tension.

As the setup for the fifth volume, this book delivers everything I could have hoped for. It builds the world and deepens the characters without feeling like filler—on the contrary, it raises the stakes and sets the stage for what’s sure to be an unforgettable conclusion.

Absolutely a 5-star read for me. If you love danmei with rich worldbuilding, intelligent storytelling, and a beautifully grounded romance, don’t miss this series.
