High crime and mystery threaten!
If you enjoyed Dead Reckoning, and Deadeye by author Michael W. Smart, you’ll relish the continuation of The Bequia Mystery series, as Deadlight takes the spotlight on your reading shelf.
Smart shifts the POV (point of view) in Deadlight to Commissioner of Police, Mike Daniels, as a combination of crime and corruption encircles the beautiful and restful Caribbean. While the citizenry and tourists enjoy life as usual, behind the scenes Daniels and three trusted friends cope with creeping and deadly challenges to the very heartbeat of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Commissioner Daniels, brought to death’s doorstep once before, and now after a full career of chasing the bad guys, now faces the horizon of retirement. He feels the pressure to leave the office of Commissioner of Police in a successful mode, but factors from international forces of crime raise the ultimate threats. He’s torn in a number of directions, and one is the direction of his heart leading to Melanie Barnes, his special love interest. So, now you know Daniels is faced with not only career choices, but choices of the heart too. Oh, and did I mention while he’s battling the bad guys?
Smart gives plenty of description and details for the reader to piece together the fabric of Deadlight as it swells and rolls toward a climactic ending. Understandably, Commissioner of Police Daniels has a hard time sleeping as he frets over tough decisions he must make. But if the citizenry knew what he knew, the entire Caribbean would become insomnia central. Once a reader begins Deadlight, sleep might become challenging as well.
The author adds a nice touch by including maps of the area, and a special glossary, both immensely helpful to the reader as the story progresses.

Deadlight by Michael Smart is the third book in a mystery series taking place in Bequia of the Grenadine Islands. The protagonist, Mike, or called more commonly in the book, “Commishhunah” is soon to be out of employment as elections are around the corner. He contemplates his life in Bequia and where he will go next while fighting crime and cartels.
In many ways Deadlight reminded me of the Jessie Stone series with an older still attractive Tom Selleck type fighting small town crime that isn’t so “small town”. He has no problems finding an attractive woman, Melanie, only problems in settling down. The life style of Bequia seems to move on its own time at its own pace. Mike does his best to stay one step ahead while manning the police force and the community together. He is well liked, respected, and appreciated.
I loved the way Smart was able to manipulate the language and make their accents true to life; I could hear the characters speaking in my head. His words as well painted a perfect picture of the Caribbean islands down to the tiniest detail and captured my attention immediately. Hands down I praise Smart for his ability to write a series in which a reader doesn’t have to start with book 1 first, although now my curiosity is piqued.
A heck of a crime book.

This is the third Michael Smart title I’ve read, and each one gets better. I was swept away by the plotline, and intrigued as to what would happen next. The author has created great characters in Mike Daniels and Jolene Johanssen, and I’m keen to read future Bequia mysteries. I loved the exotic setting of St Vincent and the Grenadines, feeling transported there by the power of the prose. Looking forward to more titles in the Bequia series!
