I got this book for Christmas and it was amazing! It was literally all the script of Wicked act 1. As a theater kid and a huge wicked fan i loved this!
I already knew this was gonna be a five-star read and somehow it still exceeded my expectations (really loved that there were some differences between the movie and the screenplay!)
Wicked: The Complete Screenplay is a fascinating and deeply rewarding read that offers fans an intimate look at how one of the most beloved modern musicals was shaped on the page. Whether you’re a longtime admirer of Wicked or newly curious about its creation, this screenplay is a compelling artifact of theatrical storytelling.
Reading the screenplay highlights just how carefully structured the show is. Character arcs, emotional beats, and thematic threads—power, otherness, friendship, and moral complexity—are all clearly visible in the dialogue and stage directions. Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship shines in particular, revealing layers of tension and affection that feel even more deliberate when seen in script form.
What makes this edition especially enjoyable is how it captures the musical’s balance of spectacle and intimacy. Even without the music, the emotional weight of the story comes through, underscoring the strength of the writing beneath the songs. It’s a reminder that Wicked endures not just because of its melodies, but because of its sharp characterization and thoughtful reimagining of a familiar world.
For fans, this screenplay deepens appreciation for the creative choices behind the show; for aspiring writers, it’s an instructive example of adaptation and collaborative storytelling. Insightful, engaging, and surprisingly moving, Wicked: The Complete Screenplay is a must-read and an easy five-star experience.
This was a really interesting experience. I read most of this script while watching along with the film, which was super fun. It’s a gorgeous copy and has stills from the film interspersed throughout. I do also find it very interesting how much was different and changed I didn’t think that there would’ve been that much that was omitted or dialogue that was completely altered in a different way that really changes the tones of the characters and the scenes. I would’ve liked the inclusion of the one boy who actually has a very strong interest in Nessa to see how that would’ve influenced the story and overall, I just love any ounce of content or any way that I can spend even more time in this world with these characters and this story so obviously this was an amazing experience.
This book is a good book to follow along with the movie… the script doesn’t exactly go along with the movie but it works anyways and I’m a big fan of the movie, musical and broadway.. I’ve been a fan of it before wicked the movie came out
Loved reading the script, especially seeing some scenes and characters that weren’t included in the final film. Also found out I had been singing an incorrect lyric for the past 15 years lol. Great book and beautiful images!
Ahhhh omg I loved this!!! It was so cool reading the script because it had all the deleted scenes that weren’t included in the final movie. Ugh so good now need to rewatch the movie for the 20th time and see the differences!
