Cry Wolf
by Hans Rosenfeldt is shocking, suspenseful, violent, and heartbreaking and set in and around Haparanda, Sweden. It has aspects of both a crime thriller and a police procedural. Policewoman Hannah Wester starts investigating the death of a wolf and her pup. When human remains are found in their stomachs, the search is on for a body. When a link is made to a drug deal gone wrong across the border in Finland, a task force is assembled and events rapidly escalate.
While Hannah is the main character, the story is told from multiple points of view (POV). Hannah is around 50 years old, sometimes too quick to draw conclusions, but relentless in her investigations, and is experiencing several personal issues. Readers get insights into many of the characters’ personal, professional, and criminal lives without detracting from the investigation. There was an amazing amount of depth to several characters without ruining the flow of the story. I don’t remember ever seeing this much depth in so many characters in a book before. One POV that stood out to me was that of the city itself. This lent a unique perspective to the story and how events can affect a city. I enjoyed the historical information as well.
The opening scene grabs readers’ attention and quickly pulls them into the investigation. The novel is interspersed with police investigations into the crimes, violence, and the personal troubles of various characters in the novel. While the transitions were somewhat abrupt, it seemed to work for me. One thing that was a little different is that readers occasionally got insight into a character’s future life situation. While this was interesting, it could sometimes be distracting to the flow.
The plot is well developed, the pace fast, and the story line is action-packed. The episodic writing style takes a little while to get used to but works for this novel. Descriptive writing gave a great sense of place while twists and turns take readers on the journey. This book is dark, clever, and gripping with great characters as well as a tense and spellbinding story line. Readers should be aware that there are some gruesome details and some chilling and emotional scenes. The ending wasn’t quite what I was expecting. However, the culmination was impactful and raised some questions and threads that could appear in a future book. Themes include murder, double-crosses, drugs, greed, social media effects on police investigations, infidelity, family relationships, and much more.
Overall, this book was suspenseful, intense, riveting, and thought-provoking. If you enjoy international crime thrillers and police procedurals that have strong characters, then this may be the novel for you. While this is the first book I have read by this author, I am looking forward to reading others by him.

Después de leer la serie del comisario Sebastian Bergman, coescrita por este autor, arranca en solitario con esta nueva serie que transcurre en Haparanda..
Verano de lobos tiene un estilo distinto, mucho más descriptiva, o tal vez sea debido a la ambientación y presentación de todos los personajes que intervienen en la nueva serie. La proliferación de nombres, incluyendo nórdicos y rusos, no ayuda demasiado. El estilo de redacción del principio del libro con estructuras gramaticales no muy usuales -sospecho que pueda deberse al traductor-, no es muy acertado. Todo esto contribuye a dejar cierta sensación de "batiburrillo" que te impide terminar de centrarte en el arranque de esta lectura y que no esperas encontrar en un autor que ya ha publicado varios libros -tal vez en la serie de Sebastián Bergman la depuración del estilo correspondía al Michael Hjorth, el otro coautor- . Pero tranquilos, esa sensación mejora conforme te adentras y avanzas en la lectura y al final terminas identificando todos los personajes, aunque seas incapaz de reproducir algún nombre si no te lo apuntas, jeje.
En cualquier caso, es una serie que promete.
El personaje de la inspectora Hannah Wester me ha gustado, una mujer en la cincuentena, afectada por la menopausia, con ciertas limitaciones o torpezas -no es muy ágil físicamente, no supera las pruebas de tiro- pero con el suficiente coraje para desempeñar su labor y una vida personal que dará continuidad a la serie.
Su inmediato superior, Gordon, unos quince años más joven, ese jefe competente y atento que se preocupa por todo su equipo, también cae "simpaticote".
Morgan, otro de los compañeros del equipo, también podría dar juego en la serie. Es ese perfecto colega compañero de trabajo con cierta sensibilidad, que capta todo, que puede estar ahí cuando lo necesitas y sabe esperar sin preguntar cuando no te apetece hablar.
En esta trama policiaca, un caso de drogas tal como se recoge en la sinopsis, conoceremos a Katja, la asesina profesional enviada por los rusos. Uff, la que lía. Un personaje con cierto pasado que dará que hablar.
En el desarrollo de la trama, el autor va narrando escenas cerradas que luego retoma y va dejando secuencias abiertas, marcando el momento en que quiere que preveamos lo que va a ocurrir un poco después. Aún así deja algún hecho menor a la interpretación del lector y un final semicerrado, que pudiera reabrir en la siguiente entrega.
Intercala breves fragmentos donde Haparanda, la ciudad fronteriza entre Suecia y Finlandia donde transcurre la acción, habla de un pasado que no volverá y de sus habitantes Me ha parecido interesante la información histórica.
En resumen, un buen elenco de personajes, una trama un tanto predecible, una subtrama que da continuidad a la serie en una novela con alguna sombra que espero se subsane en las siguientes entregas, que en principio tengo intención de seguir.

Verano de lobos tiene un estilo distinto, mucho más descriptiva, o tal vez sea debido a la ambientación y presentación de todos los personajes que intervienen en la nueva serie. La proliferación de nombres, incluyendo nórdicos y rusos, no ayuda demasiado. This dramatic novel starts with a wolf that dies and a violent rival drug deal encounter that goes badly wrong. Human remains are found in the poisoned wolves, does it link somehow to the drug deal? Who is the victim? Hannah Wester of the Haparanda police team investigates and thus starts a brutal chain of events that turns life in Haparanda upside down forcing Hannah to reflect on much unhappiness that she has kept suppressed.
First of all, there is a cast of what feels like 5000 which makes it hard to follow who is who but that does eventually sort itself out. Additionally, there are a lot of subplots which also creates some brain chaos. However, they do all connect and you just have to be patient as it’s some while before you see where it’s going. The storyline is dark and there’s quite a lot of violence and there is one scene which is quite graphic. It’s written as if for television in a short, sharp, episodic format which eventually I grow to thoroughly enjoy as you become more familiar with it and it does add a lot of suspense into the equation. I really do like that the central protagonist of Hannah is a strong, flawed, middle-aged menopausal woman and she is extremely well portrayed. I enjoy the enigma and mystery of Katja who arrives in Haparanda much like a feral cat and a very focused one at that, who is intent on picking off the ‘rats’ and in the process creating some John Wick style destruction. Her part of the storyline is excellent and it raises numerous questions. The ending is really good, it’s very exciting, there are some unexpected twisty elements, it’s emotional and sets self up nicely for number two which I will definitely want to read.
Overall, the premise and plot of the book are really good, the pace is fast and once you settle into the manner in which it’s written it’s a very exciting read.

I don't like to write a negative review, so I try very hard to select books that sound good. Nordic Noir is one of my favorite genres, so I thought I'd try Cry Wolf. Unfortunately, I disliked this darkly disturbing novel intensely. Why? Maybe it was the overabundance of characters, the confusing subplots, and no likable characters? How about the Russian mafia training children to be assassins? The incredible amount of brutal murders? This is one I would have never finished had I not agreed to review it. Edelweiss provided an ARC.

Харесаха ми интригата, динамиката и синергията между героите във "Вълче лято".
Хапаранда е незначително градче на шведско-финската граница, с голямо минало и никакво обозримо бъдеще. Но убит руски гангстер, липсващите дрога и 300 000 евро кеш го превръщат в разбунен кошер, а местната полиция изпитва големи трудности при решаването на сложния криминален ребус.
Моята оценка - 3,5*.
Харесаха ми интригата, динамиката и синергията между героите във "Вълче лято".

Decidí leer este libro en una lectura conjunta con amigas, a pesar de que la sipnosis no me atraía mucho opte por darle una oportunidad.
No me gustado mucho el libro, lo primero no me ha gustado el estilo del autor, para mi gusto demasiadas descripciones a las cuales no les he visto la razón de ser, temas personales que no aportaban nada a la trama y mas personajes que los que entraban en el camarote de los hermanos Marx.
Lo que mas me ha gustado del libro ha sido la historia de Katja y que se lee rápido, gracias a sus capítulos cortos.
El final del libro tampoco me ha gustado mucho, me ha parecido flojo y deja muchas cuestiones sin resolver.

No es que esté mal pero pone a prueba tu memoria en la retentiva de personajes,nombres y demás historias que se van desarrollando en la novela. Hay momentos que no sabes por donde te da el aire, sobre todo si has tenido por medio un fin de semana con vida social, o sea, si has mojado el gaznate más de lo debido o de lo correcto. La protagonista es un pelin borde, la inspectora Hannah Wester, a la cual no sé como le aguanta su jefe que encima está super cachas y es más joven que ella. Estos nórdicos deben de ser así. Pues eso, echándole valor y prestando atención, se deja leer, bastante peores me he tragado. 3 estrellas por ser ya mitad de semana :-)

Στη Χαπαράντα, μια πόλη στα σύνορα με τη Φινλανδία, ανακαλύπτεται ένας λύκος ο οποίος έχει ανθρώπινα υπολείμματα στο στομάχι του. Η Χάνα, αστυνομικός του τοπικού τμήματος, μαζί με τους συναδέλφους της, προσπαθούν να λύσουν το μυστήριο. Όταν όμως αυτό συνδέεται με μια απώλεια μεγάλης ποσότητας ναρκωτικών, τα πράγματα μπερδεύονται. Πώς κατέληξαν τα ναρκωτικά σε Σουηδικό έδαφος και ποιος είναι έτοιμος να τα σπρώξει στην αγορά? Η εμφάνιση της Κάτιας και η εμπλοκή της σε ένα μακελειό, περιπλέκει ακόμη περισσότερο τα πράγματα.
Σκανδιναβικό αστυνομικό θα μου πεις, ξέρω τι να περιμένω... κι όμως, θα σου πώ ότι δεν ξέρεις.
Ο Rosenfeldt ξεκινά να χτίζει την ιστορία του αργά, προσθέτοντας όλο και περισσότερους χαρακτήρες με τις δικές τους ιστορίες αλλά σε καμία περίπτωση δεν το κάνει για να μπερδέψει τον αναγνώστη. Κι ενώ κάποιες απορίες μας λύνονται σχετικά νωρίς, αντιλαμβανόμαστε ότι δεν είναι αυτό το ζητούμενο, μιας και ο συγγραφέας προοικονομεί γεγονότα τα οποία θα εξελίχθούν στη συνέχεια όχι μόνο του βιβλίου αλλά και των επομένων που θα ακολουθήσουν.
Μου άρεσε πολύ γιατί κράτησε το ενδιαφέρον μου χωρίς να κάνει "κοιλιά" καθόλου κι εννοείται ότι θα περιμένω με ανυπομονησία το επόμενο.

A bit of a mixed bag for me this one. Interesting concept, I liked the plot but the characterisation was really dragged out and execution just fell flat. So many subplots, changes of direction, the writing felt clunky at times. Overall, it was interesting, just didn't fully live up to my expectations.

La historia ha estado bien, es original, pero la forma de contarla no me ha llegado. El escritor es uno de los creadores de Sebastian Bergman y esa serie, para mi, dejó el listón muy alto. La forma de contar la historia me ha parecido un poco farragosa, mucha presentación de personajes y, además, los nombres suecos no ayudan demasiado. Lo he leído pero no con la emoción con que leo otras novelas, en fin, entretenido pero no sé si continuaré leyendo los siguientes.

Verano de lobos me ha recordado mucho a la serie televisiva El puente, aunque en ésta el autor comparte guión con Camila Ahlgren y la trama se desarrolla entre Suecia y Dinamarca y el puente que une a los dos paises.
El autor arranca en solitario una nueva serie literaria, Hanna Wester o Haparanda, y bien pudiera ser con miras de representarla en la pequeña pantalla, por la cantidad de personajes que emplea, sus ubicaciones y la maravilla de paisajes que se describen en el libro.
Sin embargo, el principio del libro no me parece muy acertado: si bien el primer párrafo de la sinopsis me parece brutal, hay demasiada gente que no se sabe muy bien qué papel juega en la historia, lobos incluidos. Uno se pierde con tanto ir y venir entre Rusia, Suecia y Finlandia y esos nombres imposibles de relacionar. Hay vidas de personajes descritas hasta la saciedad sin mucha importancia en la trama, a no ser que esté presentando el elenco de autores que marcarán los siguientes libros. Es cierto que a mitad de la novela coge ritmo y se vuelve hasta vertiginoso... pero sin mareos, ni vueltas de tuerca ni giros inesperados. El autor arranca en solitario una nueva serie literaria, Hanna Wester o Haparanda, y bien pudiera ser con miras de representarla en la pequeña pantalla, por la cantidad de personajes que emplea, sus ubicaciones y la maravilla de paisajes que se describen en el libro.
Sin embargo, el principio del libro no me parece muy acertado: si bien el primer párrafo de la sinopsis me parece brutal, hay demasiada gente que no se sabe muy bien qué papel juega en la historia, lobos incluidos. Uno se pierde con tanto ir y venir entre Rusia, Suecia y Finlandia y esos nombres imposibles de relacionar. Hay vidas de personajes descritas hasta la saciedad sin mucha importancia en la trama, a no ser que esté presentando el elenco de autores que marcarán los siguientes libros. Es cierto que a mitad de la novela coge ritmo y se vuelve hasta vertiginoso... pero sin mareos, ni vueltas de tuerca ni giros inesperados. Sólo sospechas y temores que en siguientes entregas se verá si son acertados o no. Hay uno que personalmente espero que no, porque la probabilidad de que se dé me parece totalmente... improbable.

I did read a few of Hans Rosenfeldt his coproduction about Sebastian Bergman books and they are actually quite good. And so this new solo novel introducing Hannah Wester a detective in a a remote Swedish town of Haparanda.
The case starts with a dead wolf who is poisoned which leads to dead people.
Then there is Katja who is an operator for some Russian crime cartel who is tasked to retrieve money and drugs from a drug deal gone wrong.
We learn about Hannah and her personal life and as the book continues her personal life gets some serious shocks.
The book leaves us with Hannah pondering what to do next.
The book leaves too many unsolved threads which leads me too believe a sequel is inescapable, it does annoy me when a book does leave you with more questions than answers. Especially as I am not yet totally invested in this new series. I might leave the series here deeply unsatisfied.

Tenho a série Sebastian Bergman na estante por ler mas decidi começar antes por este 1º volume de uma nova série do co-autor de Bergman levada pela expectativa que fosse tão bom como dizem que essa é. Pois, não me convenceu por aí além.
O setting em Haparanda, cidadezinha fronteiriça com a Finlândia, esperava eu algo a la The Bridge (série escrita por Rosenfeldt) mas em Haparanda tudo é lento. A acção neste livro é como a cidade, lenta. Até às 200 e tal páginas a história vai a passo de caracol, num crescendo tão lento que quase nem se nota... E atenção que o que não falta neste livro são homicídios!
As personagens são mais que muitas, acabam todas por encaixar nesta manta, mas a personagem principal Hannah é, na minha opinião, muito apagada ao longo de quase toda a história.
A partir de mais de meio o livro começa a arrancar, mas mesmo assim até ao final é tudo muito morno, até o suposto twist foi morno. O final deixa algumas perguntas sem resposta e uma nova determinação em Hannah para o próximo volume, logo verei se quero descobrir mais.
Nota caricata da tradução: na parte inicial da história há uma personagem quase obcecada em comprar um "vaso" bonito para a sua casa. Este "vaso" bonito que ela quer comprar é mencionado algumas vezes até que uns capítulos mais adiante passa a ser uma "jarra" e continua a ser uma jarra a partir daí :)

Libro terminado y bueno, la verdad es que el primer 40% del libro se me hizo eterno. No sé si es que yo estaba espesa, pero se me juntaban los nombres, los países: rusos, finlandeses y suecos. Un lio total en la cabeza. A partir de ese 40% el libro es un poco más dinámico.
No he empatizado con la protagonista, no sé porqué. En casi todos los libros, los detectives tienen una vida mísera con muchas desgracias, y en este caso no es menos. Me ha gustado el secundario del marido.
No me había fijado en que era una saga, pero el libro termina como tal, deja una historia pendiente e imagino que seguirá en alguna de las otras partes. Aunque no sé si seguiré leyendo este autor. Me ha parecido un libro muy frío, una narrativa fría.

Primer libro escrito en solitario por Hans Rosenfeldt, autor junto con Michael Hjorth, de la genial serie de novela negra protagonizada por Sebastian Bergman. Esperando con ansia un nuevo libro de esta serie, que no tiene visos de aparecer aún, empecé con ilusión este libro, esperando que siguiera el mismo estilo. Pero el estilo no tiene nada que ver.
Esta es una novela negra en el estilo más estricto, radical, literal, del término. Pero una novela negra nórdica, fría, aséptica, sin el toque de sarcasmo, de mala leche y de humor negro que tiene la serie de Bergman.
La protagonista de esta serie es Hanna Wester, una policía de un pueblo fronterizo en decadencia, donde el paro y el pesimismo reinan por doquier y cuyo único "negocio pujante" pasa por ser el contrabando. Hannah es el anti-héroe en persona, una mujer de mediana edad, que no está precisamente en forma, atacada a traición por los horribles síntomas de la menopausia y con un matrimonio en sus horas bajas. Y por si fuera poco le toca investigar los restos de un cadáver descubiertos en el estómago de un lobo envenenado.
El estilo del libro es, como ya he dicho, frío, que nos mete en un mundo de tonos de gris, donde todo parece estar en blanco y negro, gris como la vida misma en una ciudad que poco a poco se hunde más en la depresión económica.
Finalmente, una vez cambiado el chip y libre ya de la decepción de un estilo diferente al esperado, el libro sin ser lo más, me ha gustado, la historia me ha parecido interesante, aunque determinada parte de la trama me parece que está cogido un poco como con pinzas.

A fast paced, action packed thriller set in Haparanda, a town in Sweden on the border with Finland. It begins with the discovery of dead wolves, poisoned and after examination, it’s discovered they’ve eaten a human. There’s also a drug sale between Russians and Finns that’s gone wrong across the border. Hannah Wester is a middle aged cop who’s the central character in the book. The Russians want their money and drugs back and send a highly trained female assassin to Sweden to retrieve them leading to quite a bit of violence as the police try to figure out what’s happening.
The author is a screenwriter (The Bridge, Marcella) and it shows. It doesn’t have named or numbered chapters, but the scene changes are quick and abrupt, often as something big happens. Early it seemed like there were too many characters and it was hard to follow but it does settle as all the different threads are brought together. An entertaining read and an interesting beginning to a series.

Elegí este libro entre otras cuantas propuestas para un reto por ser del autor de la serie del gran Sebastian Bergman.
Sin embargo, me ha decepcionado.

Det var en till slut helt okej berättelse. Delar var ganska förutsägbara, men slutet hjälpte upp betyget från en 2:a till en 3:a.
Jag gick in med för höga förväntningar därav det lite svala betyget. Den kändes lite som en typisk deckare fast med lite fler ingredienser i början.

Es bastante lento, sobre todo al principio, tanto que pensé en dejarlo. Después agarra un poco de fuerza pero nada del otro mundo. No hay nada que descubrir porque es ese tipo de libros donde el lector ya sabe quién es el culpable y qué sucede antes que la policía. Hay un personaje en la historia similar a Jana Berzelius de la autora Emelie Schepp.
No le llega ni de cerca a la serie de Sebastian Bergman escrita por este autor junto a Michael Hjorth. 2.5 🌟

Poderia fazer a review deste livro numa só palavra: brutal!
Empolgada por ler um livro do co-autor de uma das minhas séries preferidas (Sebastian Bergman), fui adiando esta leitura pelas reviews que fui vendo por aí. Posso contudo dizer que, na minha experiência de leitora, o entusiasmo esmoreceu nas primeiras cerca de 130 páginas, ao ponto de abandonar a leitura e tentar esquecer a mesma. Não sei bem porquê, semanas depois decidi tentar voltar a pegar nele! E tão arrependida fiquei de ter feito esta pausa… a páginas tantas, a confusão de personagens que foi todo o início do livro começa a encaixar nos respetivos lugares e, o puzzle começa a ser construído.
Foi uma leitura onde todas e variadas emoções vieram ao de cima, isso é certo! Este livro pode estar descrito como policial, mas tem em medida qb uns toques de romance e drama tal como o autor já nos tinha habituado.
Se gostaram de Sebastian Bergman já sabem ao que vão. Se ainda não leram, capítulos curtos, sem paragens na ação, personagens bem construídas e cheias de camadas é o que vos espera.
Inquieta para que a continuação seja escrita e publicada! C’mon Hans Rosenfeldt mexe contigo homem! 😆

En general no me gustó, no sé si por el autor, la traducción o por cierta frialdad que hizo que no llegase a empatizar con los personajes.
Se me hicieron eternas tantas descripciones exhaustivas (personajes, paisajes, acontecimientos...). Por ejemplo, las descripciones e indicaciones de calles me hicieron sentir que estaba leyendo el Google Maps.
Los sofocos y las calenturas de Hannah insufribles.
Deja cosas sin aclarar y hace una presentación de muchos personajes que no se sabe qué pintan, supongo que esperando que leamos las siguientes entregas, pero que lo único que consiguió fue que no me gustase este.

Haparanda. Staden. Hon. Jag uppskattar miljön och de små korta stycken när staden kommer till tals. Innovativt. Annars är det en okej deckare, inte mer än så. För många människor, som jag inte bryr mig om, lite för mycket död och pyro. Jag känner att den här kanske hade passat bättre att bli skriven direkt till tv-serie eller film, istället för att ta omvägen via en bok först.

This was a lot of fun. A good story well-told. It's also the first in a series so I'll be back for more as soon as it's available.
So what made it such good fun?
Firstly, the storytelling style manages to recreate the same sort of dynamic that kept me binge-watching series like 'The Bridge' or 'The Killing' without feeling like a sparsely written film script in waiting. Hans Rosenfeldt used some clever techniques to achieve this. He told the story from multiple points of view but he avoided the thriller convention of starting the chapter by telling you whose point of view you were in. He left you to work that out, which felt similar to me to the way in which a camera shows you an establishing shot of a building before you know who is looking at it. It kept me on my toes and ticked up the tension a little. He also used the town itself as one of the points of view for telling the story. This enriched the story's sense of place and allowed him to run chapters that flit quickly through brief looks at each of the main characters, much in the way that Scandi-noir TV series tend to give moody, dialogue-free, theme-music-rich shots of characters before the end of an episode.
Secondly, the characters feel quite real. With a couple of notable exceptions, they are normal people. playing the hand that they've been dealt as best they can. The line between good guy and bad guy is often a little blurred. Most characters have flaws, some of which are why you end up caring about them. I was particularly pleased that the police officers aren't stereotypes and do have a life outside of chasing down criminals.
The plot kept me guessing and successfully misled me a few times but without cheating or straining my suspension of disbelief. From the beginning, there's a lot of violence and by the end, the body count in the small, quiet northern Sweden border town is astonishingly high and yet completely believable.
The bad guys in this were the most 'out there' elements of the story but they made everything more interesting. There's a high-functioning sociopathic drug dealer who is spooky because he operates in very unexpected ways and a female assassin who makes Jason Bourne look like an under-achiever.
If you're a Scandi-Noir fan, don't miss this one. If you're just Scandi-noir curious, this book is a great place to start.

Jag har lyssnat på Hans Rosenfeldts kriminalroman ”Vargasommar” med huvudkaraktären Hannah Wester och första delen i serien Haparanda. Det här är en stark, spännande och välskriven roman berättad i högt tempo och oförutsägbara händelser.
Jag gillar karaktären Hannah och ser fram emot att följa henne i fler böcker. Hon har en hel del att tampas med, både i yrkeslivet och i privatlivet. Haparanda och den norrländska miljön spelar såklart stor roll för romanen och får en framträdande roll i romanen. Lönnmördaren Katja från Ryssland har blivit skickad till staden på ett hemligt uppdrag och väcker obehag. En riktigt spännande historia med intressanta karaktärer och ett slut som gör att man direkt vill fortsätta i nästa del.
