Two men burned to possess her…But only one would win the deadly game…

Samantha Waters was no hot shot, just damn good at her job. And as the best bomb specialist around, she was the logical choice for the elite crime-fighting squad, Last Chance, Inc. But Sam’s sexy self-confidence put a crucial member of the team on edge—seasoned CIA black ops specialist Payton Reynolds.

Sam’s passion for risk drove Payton up a wall. The last thing he needed was someone to keep out of trouble. But soon, as they work side-by-side to decipher the bomber’s next moves, the sparks between them begin to fly. Now the two of them must fight to keep their feelings in check—as they’re drawn toward a final, explosive confrontation with a madman….

It is an okay read. Not a really great one but generally enjoyable.

The best thing are probably the characters. It is not often that the heroine works as a sapper. Unfortunately, she is not a person easy to like. Samantha does not need anyone, always knows better and rarely admits that someone else can do as well as she can. Peyton is definitely more interesting. It is a pity that the story does not focus on him a bit more. I like him much more than Sam that sometimes gets irritating.

The crime part is not particularly surprising. From the very beginning, we follow not only the Last Chance team but also the bomber himself. I think that we would be better without it. The story would be much more interesting if we did not have insight into the thoughts and motives of the villain. Also, the final scene shows Sam's stupidity and that Peyton is smarter and more cautious than her, despite her being so full of herself. He knows that something is wrong much faster.

The love part disappointed me. I have no doubt that there is passion between Sam and Peyton. However, I definitely have not been able to find all the deep feelings that they are talking about. I am also not convinced that they are perfect for each other.

Enigma
3 Stars

As a sapper with the ATF, Samantha Waters has experience defusing explosive situations. However, her latest case tracking a serial bomber may be her most hazardous as the sparks fly between her and her new partner, CIA black ops specialist Peyton Reynolds.

The book starts out well with an intriguing premise, several exciting action scenes, and solid chemistry between the leads.

Unfortunately, Sam's prickly attitude and Peyton's angst regarding his past do little to alleviate the sluggishness of the plot, which ultimately loses momentum halfway through. It takes extra effort to muster enough interest in both the romance and the mystery to finish the book.

The secondary characters are alright and it is fun catching up with Gabe and Madison from the first book. Nigel's character is also interesting enough to read the final book in the series.

I've never been a huge fan of Dee Davis, although she is more talented that I could ever hope to be. Unfortunately this book didn't add anything to my viewpoint. Everything about the story just seemed average.

A heroine who isn't quite as kick ass as the author wants her to be.
A hero whose hidden dark past but turned out not to be so exceptional.
A mystery that had been done before.
A lackluster romantic angle.

For anyone who hasn't read Cindy Gerard or Marliss Melton or Suzanne Brockmann, this might be more thrilling. I'm not being ugly, just honest.

Overall Rating: 4.45 // Action: 3.5 / Emotion: 4 / Romance: 4 / Sensuous: 2.5 / Suspense: 4.25 // Laughter: 0 / Teary: 1

All in all, *Enigma*, the second book in Dee Davis's "The Last Chance Trilogy," is an entertaining, suspenseful, romantic read. Will leave it on "to be re-read" list, since reading it a third time has to be just as engaging as the first and second reads.

Liked: {1} The hero, Payton Reynolds, an über-alpha, ex-Delta Forces, off-the-books CIA mercenary, who revealed his vulnerabilities to {2} the heroine, Samantha "Sam" Waters, a way-too-independent, strong-willed, ATF Explosives Enforcement Officer, who had to risk her heart instead of her life to find a happily-ever-after. {3} The inclusion of interesting, further-developed secondary characters introduced in the first book. {4} The constant state of suspense as wondered why the bomber, J.T., was fixated on Sam and how the team would catch him. {5} The way Davis was able to incorporate some really romantic moments between Payton and Sam during the investigation. {6} The combination of sizzle and emotional connection during the love scenes.

Disliked: {1} Davis failed to instill the deep emotional connection to Payton and Sam that should have been present (given their backgrounds). {2} Although book was mostly police procedural, the action scenes that did occur featured Sam more than Payton (particularly the big finale).

wow another great book from Ms. Davis. I must say when i began this trilogy i was a little skeptical but i can happily say i was pleasantly surprised.
Sam and Payton (and can i say great job with the androgynous names working so well) are fiery and passionate and bring a healing love and understanding to one another that i don't think many could have anticipated. Though the fireworks flare plenty and the passion is always a heavy tension in the background there was true heart and caring from both characters.
I must say there was one very emotional part of this book where i broke into tears of sadness and actually had them morph to happy tears. Reminds me that nothing in the world of fictional is ever final when the author is able to throw and thoroughly impossible miracle into the story to give you your HEA!

I managed to get through 90 pages of this (nearly a record for me lately) before feeling like I'd read it all before and getting the urge to skim just to get through it. Has a slight resemblance to Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL books minus all the bad cuss words but Davis' characters just aren't as lively. Maybe it's the cuss words I miss?

Anyway, the book is well written but is nothing new under the sun if you've been reading romantic suspense for awhile. It's about a female bomb expert who gets partnered with a sexy man (would we have it any other way?) with a tragic past. She's being stalked by a killer who knows exactly how to get under her skin.

It's hard to believe that I liked this book better than End Game. I love Payton and Sam. Payton is so damaged. But, he's really close to Gabe and Nigel. I love their relationship. And, it was good to see all of the characters from End Game. I can't wait to read Exposure which is next on my to read list.

I liked it. She didn't bother hiding the misdirection this time and I think that allowed to plot to develop better. I was happy to see Nigel make and appearance. i knew i wouldn't be disappointed by Payton. He intrigued me in the first book.
