Riches & Romantics #1

Debts & Devotion

Rate this book
The first book in a series of interconnected standalones centered around real historical couples. An age gap, slow burn forbidden love romance set in Los Angeles, California.

~

Debts & Devotion is a twisted, contemporary romance inspired by Pharaoh Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator of Egypt , and her first lover, Gaius Julius Caesar, Dictator Perpetuo of Rome, as well as historical figures from the same time period.

It is not fantasy, historical romance, or a literal retelling. You don’t need to know the history to enjoy the book, but if you do, it will definitely add to the experience.

~

Caylee Preston is the daughter of Hollywood royalty.

Her grandfather built an empire, and her father solidified its power. But now her father is dead, and she has inherited half of her father’s production company. The other half? Gone to her brother, Hunter, whose foolish ways are bound to destroy it. With her family’s legacy on the line and a surprise mess from her late father, Caylee turns to the person she least expected to ask for her father’s greatest rival.

Jonathan Carter forged his media empire from nothing.

Beginning as a lowly stagehand, he’s done unspeakable things to get where he is today, but he’s still second best. The one thing preventing him from reaching the top? His rival, Paul Preston. Fortunately for him, Paul’s death has sparked a war between his two heirs, and he plans to collect on a debt he's owed. To do so, he sets his sights on Paul’s daughter, Caylee, who is smarter than he anticipated.

Together Jonathan and Caylee will need to forge an alliance in front of and behind the cameras of Hollywood ... but may form something stronger in the process.

2.5 🌶️ Several explicit scenes
2.5 ☠️ A few triggers apply

From professional rivals to power couple of the century!

Caylee is strong willed and determined to save her family legacy, despite her brother and co CEO wanting to give it up. I admire her resilience and compassion.

Jonathan relentlessly worked his way to the top, leaving a trail of disgruntled 'hotshots'. When Caylee comes to him about her father's debt, he doesn't plan to negotiate, however, her willingness to give up everything provokes him into striking a deal with her.

What should be strictly business ends up sparking forbidden desires they both struggle to keep at bay. As their alliance solidifies, their enemies become desperate, stooping low to land their blows; yet the tragedy only strengthens their bond and they go on to become the ultimate Hollywood power couple.

I loved the banter between them, all the pining and soft moments, and their united approach to their challenges.

3/5🌟

I learned some things about myself while reading this book. I’ll tell you what I learned, but first let me say that this book is a fun read. If you enjoy rivals to lovers, age gap, billionaire romance, and explicit spice (lots of dirty talk) then you should read this book! I was gripped immediately with the premise of a Julius Caesar X Cleopatra type “retelling” (loosely based) and I wasn’t disappointed! The story is captivating and the pacing is good! The characters are well developed and I really enjoyed the insight from the MMC perspective. Dude was virile for being an almost 50 y/o man! But I enjoyed knowing how much he cared for his family, it made it all feel genuine. I would call this book more of an insta lust than a slow burn, but maybe that’s because we had a lot of insight into how the main characters “really felt” about each other (and what they did about it…several times). Now, for what I learned about myself. I learned that I really don’t like the C-word being used for the female genitalia. That’s just me guys, and it’s been noted. Well, it’s used a lot in this book. A lot. I also learned that I’m heavily a tension and yearning and slowwwww burn girlie. I’m finding out that the more burn and tension you give me resulting in a closed door or fade to black scene, it is more my jam. This book contains multiple explicit open door spicy scenes with loads of dirty talk. I knew that going in and was okay with it. I’m learning now that I just would have liked it more leaving some to my imagination. But again, that is me and I want the right people to find this book!! The author seems very creative and I love the story that she told! Thank you to the author for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book. Now, go tell all your explicit, spicy loving girlies to read this book and support this author!! For me, I would rate 4 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ spice rating.

1/2 spice on my radar - i read some crazy shit.
I didnt know what to expect with regards to it being based around the premise of Pharaoh Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator of Egypt, and her first lover, Gaius Julius Caesar, Dictator Perpetuo of Rome!

But the twist it is done - contemporary. It is brilliant! It follows 1 millionaires who run the top 2 film industry companies. Who are natural enemies. And starts off with a fake dating/rivals to lovers!

Its so so good. And done so well for being age gap! My emotions were all over the show. 1 min i was angry, the next I was sad, the next I was gobsmacked.

I really adored the courage, strength and woman power of the main FMC Caylee. She goes through so much in her life & her brother is such a prick!

I was on the fence about the mmc Jonathan until around midway in the book! But he started to grow on me and made me like him the more he opens up.

Their relationship together was so beautifully done including its development. Their banter, their devotion to each other. Just melted my heart and had me in tears.
One thing I did notice - Caylee brings up she cannot conceive. It is never explained or explored as to why - which to me - although age gap etc and he says probably not - is something that should have been explained to the reader for an understanding to her thought process and why she was eh I cant have kids. (Just a thought) - this is the only reason it isnt a full 5 stars - i felt it was something important to the storyline that was bypassed.

The twists were crazy! I expected 1 person but the rest really was a surprise !

Im hoping book 2 is a continuation of their relationship just blossoming - i feel like it isnt over for them just yet!

I highly recommend this read. Also i just LOVE the cover!!

I received this book as an arc in exchange for a honest review

Debts & Devotions by Sarah Lane is a contemporary romance based on real historical couples. The story is inspired by Cleopatra and her first love Julius Caesar.

Caylee Preston is the daughter of Hollywood’s royalty. After her father’s death, she has inherited half the production company empire and the other half has gone to her brother.
Jonathan Carter has forged his empire from nothing. He’s tireless in his pursuit to be the best but the only thing preventing him from this is now dead. With the demise of Caylee’s father Paul an internal war has begun between the two siblings and now it’s Jonathan’s time to shine.

But a surprise mess from her late father has forced Caylee to ask Jonathan for help and together they are forging an alliance to overcome it all.
The plot was very intriguing but I did not enjoy the book as much I expected. The characters on their own are very powerful and strong but together they didn’t lit a spark. A lot of other side characters are involved as I understand this book is setting the foundation for upcoming standalones but I wanted more Caylee and Jonathan. Also pop culture moments like Super Bowl etc pulled me out of the story.

For me, it was a good story plot wise but I wished the characters just had more chemistry.

ARC REVIEW: 5 STAR
If you love age gap and enemies-to-lovers romances that make your heart ache in all the best ways, Debts & Devotion is one you need to read. ❤️‍🔥

Caylee is desperate to save her family’s business after her father’s death — but to do it, she must face Jonathan, the cold, commanding CEO of Rubicon… and her father’s greatest rival. He’s 18 years older, ruthless, and the last person she should fall for.

But beneath all the power plays and tension lies a story of grief, longing, and unexpected connection. Sarah delivers a slow burn filled with sharp banter, smoldering chemistry, and just the right touch of mystery.

Jonathan and Caylee’s relationship is messy, addictive, and so emotionally charged — you’ll find yourself yelling at them one moment and melting the next.

Sarah’s writing is stunning — full of passion, pain, and hope — and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

2.5 🌶️ (there were a few spicy bits)

I enjoyed this book! It was easy to read and kept me on the edge of my seat of what to come next. This was my first book by this author and I cannot wait to read the next in the series!

Caylee and Jonathan are both top of the food chain of their productions companies - tho tragedies may have gotten them their, they’ve been forced to be rivals through past family exploits.

Caylee is so strong- willed and refuses to back down to a challenge. After her father passes and leaves them an unexpected debt, she has no choice to do what she has to do.

What should just be a business deal with Jonathan - who has risen to the top for less - quickly becomes a struggle to tell what’s real and what’s just business. I loved the banter and spice between them both. They take the challenges as they come and the softer moments between them were just uhhh! I loved them together - even with the age gap.

This book is definitely worth the read (also check the triggers). Thank you @author.sarahlane for the early read! All opinions are my own and I’m ready for book two like yesterday 😂

Debts and Devotion is a sharp, tension-filled romance that delivers slow-burn heat, high-stakes power plays, and an age-gap dynamic that feels both forbidden and deeply emotional. Sarah Lane gives us two billionaires—equally ruthless, equally guarded—who would rather destroy each other than admit how badly they want one another.

The rivals-to-lovers energy is perfection. Every interaction is charged, every conversation feels like a negotiation, and the “fake dating” situation (in the loosest, most delicious sense of the trope) adds layers of forced proximity and vulnerability neither character is ready for. Their chemistry builds slowly but intensely, turning every small shift in their relationship into a moment worth savoring.

What makes this book stand out is how adult it feels—two powerful, imperfect people navigating loyalty, desire, and the cost of emotional risk. If you love age-gap tension, billionaire dynamics, forbidden longing, and slow-burn enemies who burn the world down for each other… this is it.

Debts & Devotion - Sarah Lane

I enjoyed this story. I loved that it was inspired by Cleopatra and Julius Caesar since I don’t see many books with that type of vibe. Caylee and Jonathan had incredible chemistry, and I loved reading about them. I also really liked the side characters like Tyler and Grant. And I’m very excited to see who would be the main characters of the other books in this series. This is definitely a favorite for sure.

Wow, absolutely devoured this book and I’m wanting more immediately! This had spice, yearning, and lots and lots of drama. Caylee and Jonathan both had a good life in the sense of having a roof over them, food on the table. They both also have many life experiences that caused so much pain and ultimately hatred for each other’s families. When they end up having to work, and everyone else tries to bring them down. Such an interesting retelling of the story and I’ll do anything for book two!

🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

When two rival families are forced to work together things can get a little messy! Caylee Preston has to clean up her father's mistakes after he passes away and Johnathan Cater would love nothing more than watching Paul Preston's legacy crumble. This book is a slow burn that had me kicking my feet in excitement one moment and crying my eyes out the next. It's definitely worth a read!

This was a book that I LITERALLY brought out the popcorn as the drama unfolded! 🍿 as someone who grew up loving old Hollywood/behind the scenes biz stories…I ATE this one up! The characters are sexy and incredibly business savvy. Well, maybe not Caylee’s little brother Hunter😂 once you read this you’ll know EXACTLY what I’m talking about!

I was obsessed with the MCs Jonathan + Caylee’s scorching slow burn romance and how they both handled betrayals and heartbreak!

Cleopatra & Julius Caesar retelling

The age gap (FMC was 30 while the MMC was 48) was nice. I liked how they were both grown adults and decided to be with each other. The spice was spicing in this book. Overall, I think Sarah did an amazing job retelling this story. I can’t wait to read book 2!!

This was good, real good! I haven't begun my journey into retellings beyond Robin Hood-esque and Cinderella, but if they are all like Debts & Devotion's Julius Ceasar and Cleopatra, then it's a yes, please and sign me up!

This age gap, enemies-to-lovers was an enjoyable ride. We meet Caylee Preston and Jonathan Carter on the day of Caylee's father, and Jonathan 's biggest rival, funeral. Caylee has been hit with the unexpected news that the job she has worked hard for years, CEO of her father's production company, must be shared with her spoiled, entitled brother. From there, she learns her father took out, and failed to pay back a massive loan, from their biggest rival, the production company now led by Jonathan Carter.

Jonathan agrees to work with Caylee to get the loan paid off and the mystery, intrigue, and desire begin. At one point, Jonathan's legacy is threatened and he makes, what I thought, was an over the top speech. But then I realized that it fits, Julius Ceasar. Unsure who is trying to bring them each down, Caylee and Jonathan grow closer. Then March 15th happens and the plot against Jonathan unfolds. I do have a few questions, but nothing that discredits the story.

Will this end in tragedy or a hot, sweaty, breathless tryst? Read it. You won't be sorry.

I really liked this slow burn, age gap (that involved grown up FMC) enemies to lovers story. It's loosely based around Cleopatra and Julius Caesar and there were some real over the top moments that just worked with this story. (I also learned maybe I don't really know Cleopatra and Julius Cesar story like I thought, so I'll be rectifying that soon!). FMC Caylee just inheriated half her fathers company but she must share it with her brother (who's never worked for it like she has). Enter MMC Jonathan - her father's biggest rival and holder of a large debt that Caylee must pay off. We watch them navigate from enemies, to sort of friends, to lovers and while slow burn isn't normally my jam - there was alot of other good parts to this story to keep me engaged. I really enjoyed Jonathan's relationship with his kids that contrasted his "I'm king of the world" work attitude. There's some fun (and sad) twists and turns, some that you can def see coming but were still intriguing and kept me engaged. Can't wait to see more from this world/series in the future! Thank's to the author for a chance to ARC read this one!

Debts & Devotion's is a Julius Ceasar and Cleopatra retelling, so I was intrigued to read this. The storyline revolves around Jonathan & Caylee two 'bigwigs' of rival film production companies in Hollywood.

You meet the two main character's at Caylee's fathers funeral & as she & her siblings Hunter & Anastasia prepare to take over the legacy of her fathers company. However, it soon transpires that there are some caveats to the Will, & also that their father wasn't totally upfront about the state of the companies finances!

You will experience sibling rivalry, fake dating, enemies to lovers, bribery & corruption, bereavement, dual POV, forbidden love, scorned lover, age gap romance, living the highlife & spicey scenes, all within the pages.

I rated the book 3.5 (rounded up for GR), as I found a couple times in the 1st 10 chapters the flow was a bit choppy, but after that it become a lot smoother. Many of the twists & turns in the story line I found predictable, but it didn't diminish the overall enjoyability of the read.

* Thank you to Sarah Lane for the free ARC copy of this e-book, I'm leaving this review voluntarily*

**ARC Review**

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️3.5 (rounded up to 4)

Spice: yes!

This was pretty good and I enjoyed it very much! The plot was interesting and it had some goods twists there at the end.

Our MMC Johnathan was Hunky, and had an interesting character background (being a widower). He also has questionable morals and was willing to do whatever it takes to get to the top

Our FMC Caylee, I definitely enjoyed her personality more, and could relate to her. Being in the industry she had to work twice as hard to make sure she got on top, and despite those hardships she didn’t let it drag her down!

I know this takes place in Hollywood and them both being super rich and in the business means lines get blurred A LOT! I just couldn’t get over the fact the MMC was okay with having an Affair with a married woman (not the FMC). Everything else was fine though! But because of the tid-bit stated above I had to dock a half star.

Over all I’d say check it out! If you want steamy, age gap, rivals to lovers this will be the perfect read for you!

This book was a fun read. It was like a 3.5 to a. 4 star read for me, so I rounded up. This book is suppose to be a retelling of cleopatra and Julius Caesar retelling.

I loved that the FMC and her tenacity to ensure her family legacy lives on. You are able to see how far she is willing to go to ensure that happens. The FMC is Hollywood’s royalty and her father left her legacy severely in debt. The MMC is her family rival and much older her. For me the following phrase “all is fair in love and war” can be applied here.

Tropes:
- Age Gap
- Dual POV
- Revenge
- Witty Banter
- Grumpy MC

I have to say that the age gap between the MC’s didn’t bother me. I enjoyed their intense chemistry and their. Internal talk. I will say there are some words that was used in this story that made feel old and I didn’t quite enjoyed. However, that didn’t stop me from reading this story line.

A good read.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a bold and passionate modern Julius Caesar & Cleopatra retelling filled with forbidden love, faith, and high-stakes rivalry.

Jonathan and Caylee have instant chemistry, the attraction is there from the start, though it leans more insta-lust than slow burn at times.

The story packs in a lot: business drama, betrayal, loss, and romance. While ambitious, it sometimes felt overcrowded, and a few elements (like the heavy prayer scenes, Super Bowl 2023 callouts and pop culture callouts) pulled me out of the story.

The love confession also came on pretty suddenly after all that build-up.

Still, the author’s passion and creativity shine through. The writing has heart, and there’s real potential in this series for readers who enjoy emotional, and spicy billionaire romances.

An intriguing story built around Hollywood’s biggest power plays within the studio industry. What a turn of events! Sarah has a gift for steering plots in unexpected and satisfying directions, and her ability to craft powerful is evident here.

Caylee is a strong, resilient heir fighting to stay afloat in an industry long dominated by men. Jonathan, the powerful reigning CEO in the industry, finds himself unexpectedly and helplessly in love with the daughter of his rival, a woman around his children’s age. Following a series of events that threaten his reigning era pushes him toward a new path. Together, they make a formidable partnership, one that promises an even stronger future ahead. This is a well-written piece with just the right balance of industry background, emotional depth, and character development.

Received this as an ARC and absolutely grateful for it.

Debts & Devotion is a twisted, contemporary romance inspired by Pharaoh Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator of Egypt, and her first lover, Gaius Julius Caesar, Dictator Perpetuo of Rome, as well as historical figures from the same time period.

Caylee Preston(FMC) and Jonathan Carter(MMC) both head elites of a studio CEO’s to be exact! Two amazing people these two were 18 years apart! She was new to the business losing her dad and he was a single dad going thru his own heartache! They were never to be together never to come up with what they did!!! The pull between them the back and forth! A must read !! Don’t want to give it away!

You have Caylee who has to pay back a loan her father left the company or risk losing the family business to Jonathan the CEO of Rubicon. In this slow burn with a touch of spice you have Jonathan who is 18 yrs older than Caylee the daughter of his business rival both have suffered a loss of a loved one.You have a touch of mystery in this book.Sarah really kept the banter going in this book and will have you screaming at the MMC and FMC and excited for the next book!

She is trying to save the company her father built after a major surprise arises after his death. He is finally collecting on a debt owed by his rival company after the founder passes away. She turns to the next one man who can help her. Her father’s rival. Will he help or cause her to lose everything? WOW this was absolutely incredible. I expected adversity and spice. I did not expect the surprises late in the game. Well done. Looking forward to book two very much. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by bookfunnel.

This book has a lot of great moments, characters that have the slowest slow burn , mystery and deceit.

The MFC is not your average nepobaby. She knows what she wants and is willing to give EVERYTHING she has to succeed .

The MMC is at the top of his game in Hollywood. He did what he needed to do to get there too. To stay on top he will call in old debts, no matter the cost to the other side .

He met his match in his rivals daughter and that’s where the story begins.

This book is a good mix of passion, plot twists, and deception.

It shows you that even in the worst situations you can find good things. It read easy and had you wanting to know what happens next. The dynamics in this book are a good mix of toxic to healthy.

It’s a great story to show you that sometimes when you least expect it you find exactly what you need and in the least likely of places.

So starting off I was in and out but towards the middle it got better for me and they grew on me, I got invested and well the things going on, major age gap, pet names, these two finally getting their minds right lol.

Got the end like I beg your finest pardon is that really the end?!

It’s a HEA for sure and everything they went thru to get to that point made them stronger. I enjoyed once I got into it
