Kaiju Combat University #1

Kaiju Combat University: Book One

Rate this book
Everyone knows Mechs come in pairs. Two pilots, two cockpits, one shared neural link. The alien tech won’t run without perfectly synced minds. And for reasons no one fully understands, only women have been able to do it.

At least, for the last fifteen years.

Caleb Booker was supposed to be cannon fodder, just another Terra Nova Defense Corps grunt headed for the front lines. Then he aced a preliminary test and landed a spot at one of the most elite Mech colleges on the planet. That was weird enough. Then he did the impossible. He synced with not one, but three top-tier female prospects.

Now Caleb is juggling intense combat training, academy classes, and a future ticket to the Kaiju War. All while navigating multiple very territorial women who aren’t shy about staking their
claim.

I DNF this book at the 46% point. I didn't like the MC much, and the author introduced us to the 6 women who will likely be in his harem by that point.

The MC is an 18yr old orphan that's getting ready to graduate from high school. His H.S. girlfriend has been with him for 5 years at this point. Upon graduation, they all take a competency test to see if they qualify to be mech pilots. She passes, and the machine doesn't give a reading for him. So she dumps him because she knows long distance relationships don't work. Of course, naturally the administrators come to him and tell him he has the most perfect scores ever recorded and he'll be a savant as a mech pilot. And now he gets to major pout about his girlfriend for a while. Then he tells some of the guys he kind of knows that he scored awesome on the testing and has been given a full ride scholarship to become a mech pilot, and all the people from school want to hang on him for the next few days, including his now ex. This takes up more than the first 100 pages, and I was already bored with it all.

Once he gets to the school he chooses, he's set upon by 5 different female classmates, 3 fellow pilot candidates, a mech engineer, and a scientist. Plus there is the famous pilot that lost her co-pilot and now can't use a mech that is in play. Again, this all happens in the first half of the book. By the end of his first day at the academy, I was checked out of the book.

Started off pretty good. I liked the MC. He had just enough snark without being his entire personality. The writing was pretty good. There was a couple of info dumps, but they were handled very well (the MC gave a book report in school, so it worked with in that context). If you have ever seen the movie Pacific Rim, you will understand the world. Two people sync together to power a Mech to fight Kaiju. For whatever reason, women are the only ones that are safely able to link. Until Caleb. He has the highest neural link compatibility of anyone in the last few decades. He also might be able to link with more than one other pilot. This is a good thing because the war against the Kaiju isn't going that well.

The pacing was a little slow but worked for me at first. Then Caleb gets to the school, and the pacing became an issue for me. Caleb met a bunch of women who were interested in him. I kept asking myself if this was a harem story or a PG -13 kind of story Overall, not a lot happened in this one. It seemed more like this book was there to set up the action in the next books. Not bad, but it started out so good, I was hoping for more. I will be reading the next book to see how this goes.

phenomenal relationship writing

Michaels manages to perfectly capture the simple moments that make falling in love so beautiful, with an understanding of romantic tension that is very often missing in the genre. Characters have personality, depth, and all interact in a natural and seamless way that draws you in.

A fantastic read, I cannot wait for the next books in this series

A fun book

I know people over react ,but I was definitely laughing at some scenes. And was lad for it.I like charters and find the world interesting. The world is different and I like the interaction they have. I am looking forward to reading more of this story and I will now start looking for more books by this author I am thankful for the hard work put into this story.
P.s. the art was interesting, and yes the art helped me to pick this book so to the artists you did great kid

It's Pacific Rim but if Raleigh was an aggressively sarcastic misfit teenager. Some is funny. Some is painfully awkward. It also sticks to the "man gets into the all-female school for the first time ever and for some bullshit reason has an ability that makes him the center of a polycule that includes his teacher/mentor" trope. Like rubber cement sticks to it. 12% and already, two women of opposing personalities and a teacher that's way too flirty with a 19 year old.

LMAO REALLY?! YOU JUST LIFTED STACKER PENTECOST OUT OF PACIFIC RIM WHOLE CLOTH?! I mean, making him into the kindly old grandma downstairs is certainly a move. Ah well I suppose they say good artist copy, great artists steal.

I enjoyed it. Might even buy myself a copy someday.

Update: I did not enjoy the second book. I will no longer buy a copy.

Not normally into mech stuff, liked the authors other work, so gave this a try. It's a pretty literal interpretation of pacific rim with the lore and world building.

Takes way too long to get going, and the messy relationship drama at the start didn't get resolved in a satisfying way, not that he gets back together, he shouldn't, more so that she gets the last word a jib in. Pacing in general could be better. The Li's are obvious in the first 10 chapters, but only one gets focused on. It felt like only the last 30-40% is actual story.

I committed to finishing it due the me liking the authors other series, ends up decent enough, lol'd a few times. May even read the rest eventually.

Kaiju are monsters that dominate the world in this story, but their presence is not felt aside from the mini expositions. They are there, but at the same time, they are not. Why is that pertinent? It will set a pace to the story that will justify the training and amount of casualties during those said trainings.

It's weird to have an established world, but the story focuses on training. Those trainings will be more impactful if the magnitude of the Kaijus is well portrayed; as it is, they are just pieces of history mentioned by mouth and pages.

This book 1 feels like an intro of an intro. 3/5

Did not expect it to be this good.

This is some pretty solid (if unsung obvious tropes) storytelling for this genre. Not super often you find a gem like this. For me especially since I normally ignore serials with only one book. But something about this called to me. I think it was the fact that the cover at pease seems to not be generated and is actually human art. I’d have given it an extra star for that alone tbh but 5 is all Amazon allows me to give so 5 and a big recommendation to read it is!

Interesting as I havent read many books focused on Kaiju aka giant monsters

The MC expected to be cannon fodder when he graduated high school. Surprise, he's been flagged as the first Male pilot for an alien Voltron battle mecha. Not only that, but he finds 6 women that lock onto him, one of which is his instructor, a former pilot herself. Meanwhile, his ex signs up for sketchy augmentation at a competitive military academy, so not ony are Kaiju in his future, but a high powered crazy ex too. What could go wrong?

Soul Sync

I've seen similar backstory cartoons and other stories, but this twist has the MC building a battle harem. I'm sure the sequel will have much more combat and character development. The bonding is complete for the first girl, but I think there are 6 more to go. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Real good first book. Fun world too

This book got me hooked. It was a fun run with a lot of terrific world building and some cute relationships. I wish there was a bit more mechs in book 1 but I can see a lot of promise in future books from the bit of mechs we did get.

Not sure how I feel about the ex plot line. I hope it doesn't get too ugly.

A decent read overall. Just enough world building. The MC seems to be a likeable guy. Just enough character development for the female characters. And they didn’t get thrown into combat on their first day. Which is a little refreshing. At least they are learning how to operate things. Looking forward to the next book

I devoured this one in just one reading session. I loved the concept and enjoyed the story. I actually devoured the second one in this series as well. I'm eagerly waiting on the next novel. I'm a huge fan of Pacific Rim and I think this is such a great twist on one of my favorite movies. Highly recommend if you enjoy an academy monster series.

Fantastic

This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. Perfect blend of humor and tension. I'd put it right up there with M Tress' Monster Girls in Space as one of my favorites this year. Eagerly awaiting book 2.

Glad I took the risk

Took a chance on this one and glad I did. MC is hilarious. Bit of a slow burn with romance. Interesting take on the Kaiju story. Really want to see what happens next.

Decent but slow

Good hook of a story with decently intriguing characters but the pacing is a drag. Like Harry Potter if we had to sit through every day of Harry’s term. This book doesn’t even make it one month into the term.

well written but nothing but a dating SIM

The characters are unique and enjoyable. The world is fun. But, there’s nothing to the story other than a guy gets a harem and the story entirely revolves around the relationships

I could not stand this guy. I think they ramped up the OP-everyone-loves-him too early so I wasn't sympathising with him at all.
