Everyone knows Mechs come in pairs. Two pilots, two cockpits, one shared neural link. The alien tech won’t run without perfectly synced minds. And for reasons no one fully understands, only women have been able to do it.
At least, for the last fifteen years.
Caleb Booker was supposed to be cannon fodder, just another Terra Nova Defense Corps grunt headed for the front lines. Then he aced a preliminary test and landed a spot at one of the most elite Mech colleges on the planet. That was weird enough. Then he did the impossible. He synced with not one, but three top-tier female prospects.
Now Caleb is juggling intense combat training, academy classes, and a future ticket to the Kaiju War. All while navigating multiple very territorial women who aren’t shy about staking their claim.
I DNF this book at the 46% point. I didn't like the MC much, and the author introduced us to the 6 women who will likely be in his harem by that point.
The MC is an 18yr old orphan that's getting ready to graduate from high school. His H.S. girlfriend has been with him for 5 years at this point. Upon graduation, they all take a competency test to see if they qualify to be mech pilots. She passes, and the machine doesn't give a reading for him. So she dumps him because she knows long distance relationships don't work. Of course, naturally the administrators come to him and tell him he has the most perfect scores ever recorded and he'll be a savant as a mech pilot. And how he gets to major pout about his girlfriend for a while. Then he tells some of the guys he kind of knows that he scored awesome on the testing and has been given a full ride scholarship to become a mech pilot, and all the people from school want to hang on him for the next few days, including his now ex. This takes up more than the first 100 pages, and I was already bored with it all.
Once he gets to the school he chooses, he's set upon by 5 different female classmates, 3 fellow pilot candidates, a mech engineer, and a scientist. Plus there is the famous pilot that lost her co-pilot and now can't use a mech that is in play. Again, this all happens in the first half of the book. By the end of his first day at the academy, I was checked out of the book.
Michaels manages to perfectly capture the simple moments that make falling in love so beautiful, with an understanding of romantic tension that is very often missing in the genre. Characters have personality, depth, and all interact in a natural and seamless way that draws you in.
A fantastic read, I cannot wait for the next books in this series
This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. Perfect blend of humor and tension. I'd put it right up there with M Tress' Monster Girls in Space as one of my favorites this year. Eagerly awaiting book 2.
Took a chance on this one and glad I did. MC is hilarious. Bit of a slow burn with romance. Interesting take on the Kaiju story. Really want to see what happens next.
enjoyed the story, has rash decisions with consequences that can't be accepted that lead to more bad choices. confusion and nobody to someone that is needed.
This one came out of nowhere for me. I really liked the characters and story. A few cliché plot points that kinda made me laugh. Great book! I highly recommend it!
