The battle-hardened Roman legion return! For fans of Ben Kane, Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell and Simon Scarrow.
Glory is fleeting…
Germania, 59 AD
Centurion Marcus Corvo and his Legion of the Damned, a force of expendables comprised of ex-gladiators, slaves and deserters, have done the impossible and rescued Legate Crispus’ son from war-torn Armenia.
Their reward was to be freedom and a pardon, and for Corvo it was the chance to step out of his ancestors’ shadows.
After learning that Legate Crispus has been exiled to Germania by a jealous and suspicious Emperor Nero, and determined that his men should receive their rewards, Corvo leads the survivors north in search of the legate.
In Germania, the Damned come to the aid of some legionaries led by a centurion who tells them that Emperor Nero considered Crispus successes a threat and so sent him north where he lives in constant fear of an imperial assassin.
But without the backing of Crispus, Corvo and the Damned are right back where they started, and further from Rome than ever…
And with local tribes readying for attack, it seems they once more need to prepare for battle.
Will the Damned find another way to bring honour to Rome? Will they survive the harsh forests of Germania?
Or are they doomed to remain exiled from their homeland…?
FORESTS OF DEATH is the second book in the Legion of the Damned Roman Thrillers action-packed, authentic historical military adventures set in Ancient Rome.
THE LEGION OF THE DAMNED ROMAN THRILLERS BOOK Fortress of Steel BOOK Forests of Death
I started reading Fortress of Steel last night, and immediately was sucked into this compelling series. The author does an incredible job of grabbing the reader and throwing him or her into ancient times, where newly promoted Centurion Marcus Corvo and his legion of “The Damned” must race against the clock through the forests of Germanic to bring newly rescued Tribune Crispus to his father, to keep his promises to his men.
The world-building and characterization are well-balanced with the many moments of action, with some well-placed Easter eggs of intrigue. What is Arus up to? Is he really on Legate Crispus’ side? I still wonder about that considering his secretiveness and scheming.
Lovers of military historical fiction will love this series, and the author
A story which I find interesting covering a part of the Roman empire where it was never really subdued. The Legion appears to be getting thin on the ground,it will interesting who will be recruited.
Swiftly following on from book 1 I have just completed the second volume. A most enjoyable read. The core characters remain although some are lost along the way and new ones introduced. Well worth a read!
