The storm has passed, but the true reckoning has only begun.
Shipwreck Bay lies in ruin. Maeve is a prisoner of a Skadian prince. Ronin is left behind, desperate to keep the pirate factions from tearing each other apart.
Maeve must survive Varric’s attempts to steal her immortality and endure Nathaniel Pike’s cruel games. But Death left her with more than warnings—every life lost brings her closer to understanding how to fight back.
Meanwhile, Ronin faces his own war. Pirate hunters have seized their safehold, and the fractured pirate crews are ready to turn on each other. To save Maeve—and the Isles—he must unite them all. But first, he’ll have to reckon with the past he’s tried so hard to forget.
Can Ronin become the king the pirates need?
Can Maeve hold on to her soul through the torment?
And when they finally meet again, who will they be?
We begin right where we left off at the end of The Monarchs, right after THAT happened. Maeve and Ronin are separated, and she's about to find out exactly what Ronin went through when he was captured. I don't know what it is about Anacostia's writing, but I literally couldn't stop! I was so sucked into this story, despite it being a very tough read, that I almost stayed up all night to finish!
Maeve finds out more about her powers, becoming a little harder to kill each time she meets Death. Though she reaches a point where she truly wants Death to accept her so she doesn't have to return to the miserable existence under Varric and Pike and their men. When she finds Pike's wife Penelope (whom she was betrothed to in The Last Leviathan), she can see how close she was to having the awful life that poor Pen has. It was truly so sad to hear of Penelope's sadness and wishes to be touched with love, since she doesn't get that with Pike. He's someone who is so sadistic, he really shouldn't be married because he will end up killing his wife with who he is inside.
Ronin goes through an incredible transformation, both physically and emotionally, to be able to lead the pirates of Shipwreck Bay. They work to get revenge against the attack on them in The Monarchs. And during all this, he knows what Maeve is going through, and yearns to bring her back to his side.
I loved the vengeance that Ronin and crew were able to enact, and even Maeve got to take her slice of revenge against Pike (both Sr. and Jr.). Even though things seem pretty bleak at the end of this story, Ronin and Maeve are together again and I know they will be able to accomplish their goals in Book 4! I just hope they both survive to see it...
Some favorite quotes: But I wasn't a princess anymore. I was a pirate. I wasn't interested in the gold. The only treasure I wanted was Mae. He wanted to break me, but I didn't let him. "But you shouldn't fear death, Nathaniel. You should fear me." ... "Like a python fears a bunny." "Being monstrous is subjective, Mae. It'll turn you into a survivor." "I'm pushed to the brink constantly for the amusement of men. My death used to matter, but now it's another way to torture me." They humiliated me. They abused me. They hurt the man I loved. And they will pay for it all. My heart was in my ears, the very heat of the flames roaring inside me. I was the fire, devouring everything in my path. "If you die, I will go to Death's domain and drag you kicking and screaming off their fvcking boat." "Don't threaten me with a good time." "Stop flirting with me and get the fvck up." "I want their blood saturating my hands, Leviathan." "Blood always grows cold. It won't keep you warm like you think it will." But when an awful man with an inflated ego whispered in his ear all day and night, any young boy could become a monster. Sometimes a forest needed to burn to grow back more beautiful than before. She squeezed me like she was desperate for any affection that didn't have a price. I was going to get her out of prison whether she still wanted me or not. She would still hold that little piece of me. I'd never get it back. It would be hers forever. And I wished that the piece I held of her would still fit any misshapen socket it left behind. His scent filled my nose, and I felt safe again. "You see, Samuel, you created me with your violence, but your son, he fine-tuned me. It's time to pay your penance. And I'm here to collect." Perhaps we hadn't changed as much as I feared. Maybe we'd changed in the same way. We both grew armor, but his was on the outside and mine was inside. Mae was my sentry. And I was her king. Our fates were woven together. I would always find my way to her, and she would always find me again. I already loved her, but this bond was soul-deep, embedded in my very being. I wanted a beautiful distraction. But we'd been through this once before. I wouldn't make the same mistake again. We wouldn't fall into a cycle of sex and distraction like we used to. This bond between us was far more important than that. And like spring, she sent the darkness away. She warmed the cold and grew stronger after. Because in reality, spring was just a brutal as winter. In the cold, you fight to survive. But in the spring, you fight to bloom. "I'm in love with you. Which means that if anyone touches you, they're dead." "I would say the same, sweetheart, but I much prefer watching you take your own pound of flesh. Then I'd wash the blood from your hands." We'd suffered too much and wore our trauma like a matching set. When we were together, we were whole. I hooked my shield to my back with the familiar leather strap and reclaimed what was mine.
If you love a pirate romantasy with healing from trauma, forced proximity, yearning, and revenge, then you HAVE to reach The Indomitable Sentry!
I received an advanced review copy from the author. This review contains my honest opinion and is being left voluntarily.

The Indomitable Sentry throws us straight back into the action following the events of book two, returning us to the world of the Farlight Isles. Since this is the third book in the series, Anacostia Miller had the massive task of setting everything up for the finale, and the direction she took focused heavily on Ronin and Maeve’s individual battles rather than their shared ones.
I’ll be honest, I usually struggle when the main couple spends significant time separated and navigating their own paths. I read these books for the chemistry and the tension between the leads, so having that distance is always hard. But weirdly enough, I came to see the space between Ronin and Maeve as a necessary evil. It felt like this instalment wasn't about them functioning as a unit, but about breaking them down individually and remoulding them into the people they need to be. It was dark and painful, but it felt like they really needed to face those demons on their own.
Maeve’s story was definitely the highlight for me. Miller writes trauma so incredibly well—she captures not just the event, and the damage, but the invisible marks it leaves behind. Watching Maeve pushed to and past her breaking point was heavy and gritty, but it made for some powerful storytelling.
That being said, because their storylines were so independent for so long, I did miss that spark that happens when Ronin and Maeve are in the same room. Their character growth was incredible but I found myself craving that extra bit of magic that comes from their interactions.
Even with the heartbreak, I loved reading this. The reunion in the later stages felt earned, and the stage is now set perfectly for book four. I am beyond ready to see them face the end of this story together.
Thank you to Hot Tree Publishing for providing this ARC.
Thank you so much Anacostia Miller for sending me this ARC!
The Indomitable Sentry is the third book in a Fantasy Romance series and after loving the previous two I was so excited for this one and the author definitely didn’t disappoint, it was everything I hoped for and I love Maeve and Ronin!
This book starts exactly where the previous one ended and was like a rollercoaster from the first page to the last one and I absolutely loved it. There was so much action, strategies, plot twists, pain, heartbreak but also beautiful moments between our favorite characters and I wasn’t bored for a single moment. The author warned us it’s much darker than the others and I could definitely see that, my heart was breaking for the characters I came to adore and I’m in awe at how strong and resilient they are, especially Maeve. Both she and Ronin went through so much in these books and their characters development is phenomenal, they grew even more here and I love them so much. Their relationship is truly beautiful, I love how they always support and are there for each other and help each other through everything, I hoped the reunion would happen quicker than it did, but still, those scenes of them we got were perfect and I can’t wait to see them again in the next book. I also loved seeing their found family again, these characters are amazing and Freynir was such a great surprise, I came to adore him in this book.
The Indomitable Sentry is a perfect next installment in this incredible series, I loved it and the whole series so much and can’t wait for the next book.
This is such an incredible book and series. Anacostia Miller is one of the few authors that can write a book and each time you read it, it feels like the first time.
The Indomitable Sentry is dark, its gritty, is painful, but it is powerful. There are still some parts where one can laugh through the pain and tears, but this was the book that was meant to confront our demons. This was the book that asked all parties, what do you want to do next, fight or sink? I absolutely love how each character doesn’t get lost in this complex story. I deeply love the dynamic of each of the couples as they acknowledge the traumas and how it changes them yet can still love each other stronger for it. I can’t wait for book four. While I’m not ready for the series to end just yet, I need to see this story through. 100/10 stars.
It's been a while since I arc read book two and I was so happy to be able to dive into this world again! To be honest, I usually don't like a storyline where the main characters are seperated for almost the entire book but I should have just trusted in Anacostia. The first two books in the series I've loved and this one is a worthy addition to it! It was a brutal book but it was beautiful to see how Ronin and Mae became the people they needed and wanted to be. I can't wait for the next book!
"And like spring, she sent the darkness away. She warmed the cold and grew stronger after. Because in reality, spring was just as brutal as winter. In the cold, you fight to survive. But in the spring, you fight to bloom."
What a ride this book was! I love Mae's strength and bravery. She bends but she never fully breaks. And Ronin's devotion and love for her was beautiful to read. For all the horrors Mae faced in this one, the ending satisfied my need for something sweet and hopeful.
This book started off fast-paced and exciting, then delved into the horrors and trauma Mae had to face at the hands of her captors. I loved seeing her strength after being broken over and over again. And Ronin is just everything!
💔💔💔 This was tough to read because it's heavier and darker than the previous books, but like the author promised, there is happiness at the end before going into the next book. My heart hurts for Maeve and Ronin...
Loved the book and everything that went down. There was so much stuff packed into this book that we obviously needed another book to finished out the series, but I'm also low-key mad that I have to wait yet again to get more answers. Please don't let this be 5books I might ☠️ lol. The struggle and timeline for getting the main characters together again was like nail-biting for me, made me so sad lol. Also because of this there is very little spice in this book, but we're focusing on emotional connection despite an ocean between them so like you have to allow it lol
