A Magical Bookshop in IrelandDiscover the secrets of Runa and her magical bookshop in 24 short reads
Some days change your life forever. Have you ever had one of those? Like, say, losing your job in the morning and ending up with a magical bookshop in Ireland by nightfall? Yeah, me neither. Until it happened.
Here’s what I’ve learned so I’m not human, but no one knows what I really am. I have magic, but I’m clueless about how to use it. Oh, and I’m in danger. Apparently, only my bookshop in Ireland can keep me safe.
In the first book, I head to Ireland and cross paths with a rather cranky lionLionell, the Alpha of Baile Beag an Ghrá’s lion shifter pack, has enough on his plate with his unruly group. When Iris arrives to save the local hotel, his inner lion falls for her instantly. But the last thing Lionell needs is more chaos, with tourists swarming the town. And what good is a delicate human to a mighty lion shifter?
For Lionell, the answer is Iris has to go. Fast.
About the each of the 24 short books, Runa helps a pair of lovers and finds out more about the secrets. Dive into a world full of friendship, love and magic.
In her latest paranormal cozy mystery, Shimmer, Shortbread, and Shifters, C. Shamrock presents a world brimming with charm and supernatural intrigue. The narrative introduces an engaging ensemble of characters and a central mystery that effectively hooks the reader from the opening pages. There is an undeniable sense of fun woven throughout the plot, and the creative foundations of the world show immense potential for fans of the shifter subgenre who enjoy a lighthearted, fast-paced investigation.
However, the execution is hampered by a narrative pace that feels significantly rushed. The structural choices-specifically the inclusion of more than two viewpoints within a single chapter- often prove disorienting. This lack of clear transitions extends to the setting as well; locations frequently shift between sentences without the necessary breaks to ground the reader. These technical hurdles make it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the scenes, as the prose moves too quickly to allow for atmospheric build-up.
While the "fun factor" is high, the story would have benefited greatly from a longer page count. The shorter length deprives the audience of the "fluff" and quiet character moments that are essential for forging a deep emotional connection with the protagonists. A more expansive word count would have allowed the world-building to breathe and the relationships to develop more organically. As it stands, the book is a brisk and enjoyable read, but it leaves the reader craving the structural stability and depth required to turn a good concept into a truly immersive experience.
Please Note: Shimmer, Shortbread, and Shifters is part of the broader Mystic Inn universe. While the mystery is self-contained, reading the associated novellas can provide additional context for the recurring supernatural elements found in this setting.

Shimmer, Shortbread, and Shifters is a standout addition to the paranormal cozy mystery genre, masterfully balancing a "fish-out-of-water" discovery story with gripping supernatural intrigue. The narrative’s strength lies in its character-driven plot: after years of being plagued by visions she couldn't explain, the protagonist is forced back to her roots, turning her homecoming into a high-stakes race to uncover her true identity. C. Shamrock provides an expertly paced journey of self-discovery, supported by an ensemble cast that feels both whimsical and grounded. By weaving a central mystery that hooks the reader from the opening pages, Shamrock has created a world that is as smart as it is enchanting. I was thoroughly captivated by this debut and am officially ready to binge the rest of the series.
I wanted so badly to rate this book higher because I LOVED the story, but the writing felt super rushed. The chapter structure threw me off a bit, especially with multiple POVs in the same chapter (more than 2), and the way the locations would change in between two sentences without a break.
The characters were fun and the mystery had me sucked in! I just would have enjoyed more fluff to have time to get a connection with the characters.
Super fun and fast read, but it needs a lot more structure and character/world building.
This was a really cute story, and I enjoyed it a lot. There was a bit if stumbling along the way though as the structure wasn’t laid out very well. I didn’t mind the dual POV in the same chapter, but it needed to be separated a little better. My biggest complaint is that this needed to be more drawn out. It felt very surface level. There wasn’t much depth and I feel like that was because of the shortness of the book. But the storyline itself was wonderful.
this was a strong short story and enjoyed getting into this magical world and characters. C. Shamrock was able to weave something that worked well in the genre and was engaged from the first page until the end. The characters were written well and thought worked well in this universe.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this book and can’t wait to read the rest of the series. It’s about a girl who does not know why she keeps seeing things, until is forced to return home. Now’s it’s time to figure out who she is and everyone else.
Runa has had what she thought were hallucinations her whole life. Finding out they were real, she was sent to Ireland to where her mom had left her bookshop. On the way there, she meets Iris who is also new to town. This is the story of them learning that creatures, shifters and magic are real.
I am completely in love with this book and author. Definitely a book to read on a nice winter eve in front of the fire or outside in the garden on the porch.
