A Time Loop LitRPGWhat happens when the worst possible build meets unlimited practice time?John Walker has created the “perfect” character—at least, that’s what he tells everyone. One health point. 999,999 attack damage. Any hit kills him instantly… but any hit from him kills anything back.

Most players call that suicide. His guild thinks he's lost it.
John calls it optimization.

When a server glitch traps him solo in a 20-player raid—up against 5,000 goblins—with his experimental Glass Cannon Supreme build, most people would panic. Most would give up after dying fifteen times to a pebble thrown by a bored goblin.

John isn’t like most people.

🔁 Optimization through death.
Every death is just data. Every reset is another chance to get it right.

John isn’t your typical time-loop protagonist who gets wiser or softer. He gets more stubbornly precise—refusing to accept that his build is flawed, only that his execution needs refinement. His mathematical obsession, glass-cannon philosophy, and refusal to compromise make him insufferable, unstoppable… and strangely admirable.

As the resets stack into the dozens, John begins bending the

Shockwaves become his signature

Architecture becomes his weapon

Stat-based destruction becomes his art form

And when your damage output breaks the game engine, reality starts getting creative about where all that excess violence has to go.

"Defense is just delayed offense."
"Magic is just hitting things with style."
"My build isn't wrong—my execution just needs work."

If you
Stat-heavy progression
Time loops with game logic
Physics-breaking glass cannon builds
Solo raid bossing
Literal environmental combat

...you’ll love One-Shot First Strike.

Perfect for fans of The Perfect Run, Mother of Learning, and Defiance of the Fall, this is pure LitRPG progression fantasy—with a
What if the overpowered protagonist earned his strength through repeated failure and absolute refusal to change?

This is my second LitRPG by Lina Will and it feels like it was written by someone who actually knows the gaming and the genre. First Strike had me grinning from the start and shaking my head at our main character’s “genius” plan.

John has decided he’s cracked the perfect build for his favorite game. After endless calculations and theory crafting, he’s put together a glass cannon build that can wipe out his opponents in one hit.. as long as he never takes a single one himself. His friends warn him it is a disaster waiting to happen, but John is convinced he’s unbeatable… until reality (or game reality) starts to prove otherwise. He’s a bit cocky, a bit stubborn, and occasionally obnoxious, but that’s part of the fun.

The pacing is quick and keeps things moving, but because it is on the shorter side, there were moments I wished for more breathing room. A little extra time with John, his friends, and their world could have made the emotional beats land harder and given John a touch more relatability.

Worldbuilding here works well. The RPG mechanics feel natural and clear without bogging down the story. You can tell Lina Will knows the systems, the culture, and the quirks of gamers, which makes the setting feel authentic and immersive even without long explanations.

Overall, this was a fun, fast, and clever read that hit all the right genre notes. My biggest complaint is simply that I wanted more, which is a pretty good sign for a book.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC copy of First Strike. This has not affected my review at all, which are my own thoughts.

First Strike is a time loop LitRPG novel where we follow John, and co., as they dive into a new virtual challenge, where they have to clean up a chamber full of goblins. Except, John is all attack and no defense, so no one is really trusting on him, until he gets trap in a kind of time loop where he can try to win as many times as necessary, and that's when his build starts to show what it is really capable of.

First of all, I'm glad we solely got John's POV or else I would have found him as obnoxious as his friends did. What. A. Man (not a complement). Yet, his character was quite well built, and his obsession with the game and the statistics and how he implementing he's knowledge in the most chaotic way possible, felt quite compelling. I understand that shorter formats like this book don't give much space to explore ideas and characters, and I don't tend to complaint, but I also think that "The First Strike" could have benefited of a few more pages to develop some aspects a bit more.

Like, John's character, who could have shown a bit more of struggle, or the author could have explored a bit more the time loops and how it worked (personal preference, 'cause it's one of my favorite's tropes). I think some potential was lost in just explaining what happened and what John learnt. As in: "by loop X, he this," and "in loop Z, John learnt to implement that, but still failed due to his massive ego". Which, fair, but he still didn't sweat too much for the win for my liking, is all I'm saying😂

Another thing that bothered me was repetitiveness, mainly, in dialogue. In a longer work I may not have noticed, but the same "formulaic" dialogue a few times in less than a 100 pages, definitely stood out. The first time, it was funny. The second, you appreciate circling back to it and make it a bit of a git. By the third, fourth and even fifth, time, it gets boring to always have the characters say the same. I'm sure more types of jokes can be made even in a situation like this one.

But, overall, I had lots of fun with john and co., seeing them adapt and overcome whatever came for them. Fast paced, enjoyable and for fans of video games or anyone looking for majoring in mathematics😂 Really, I didn't think anyone could be such a fan of them like John. Definitely recommended!

Interesting change from the usual dungeon romp. Thanks to the author for making it available through BookSirens. Main character John is more than a little obsessive in his approach to a solution, but his apparently eidetic memory and systems analysis skills are valuable tools in that obsession, and [other character: “That’s not how [ … ] works.” and John’s retort: “It’s how my [ … ] works.” should tell you something about John. Lots of mechanics in this short book. One thing new to me:
“I tried this and died to a butterfly”

I’ve not come across “died to” before. To me, it’s an odd phrasing but apparently in the gaming world, it’s more common.

I liked this:
“Sarah’s voice came through flat. “John, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results.”
“No, that’s the definition of practice. Insanity is giving up before you master the technique.”

Nice

Thank you to the author and to BookSirens for making the ARC available.

I haven’t read many LitRPG books but this was an enjoyable short read. John is, at first glance, a fairly standard kind of protagonist. However, his focus and dedication on making an impossible glass cannon build work made all the difference to the story progression. I was definitely on his side throughout the story.

There are also moments of genuine humour in the book, shown through John’s interactions with his teammates, most notably: “A statement that says ‘I understand the true purpose of video games: making numbers go up as high as possible while ignoring trivial concerns like self-preservation.’”

Only stat to focus on decreasing is the enemy HP down to zero, which I can fully get behind. All in all, it’s a fun read and I’ll definitely pick up more by this author.

A fun quick read with little beneath it. The protagonist does truly prove dedication to his beliefs, but also never grows with that dedication. He seems to fall flat as a character and feels more like a set piece that does not change throughout the story. It is a short book but I would have loved to see more internal struggle on if his "perfect build" was perfect at some point and have him grow through that to the end.

This book has a genuinely fun premise — a fragile “1 HP, 999 DPS” build thrown into a dungeon. The mechanics are clever, and the loop concept makes the raid progression interesting to follow. I even found myself smiling at how absurdly funny the build was at times.

That said, the story leans heavily on not explaining the math behind the build and the progression through the dungeon only. It’s basically one encounter, repeated with tweaks, and while that structure is inventive, it left me wanting more variety. Character engagement is pretty light, so I never felt fully invested beyond the mechanics.

Bottom line: an enjoyable read if you like LitRPG systems and quirky builds, but don’t expect much emotional depth.

I found this story a little irritating. An overconfident gamer is lucky he has friends that put up with his crap. I think if one of my friends played a game with me the way he did i wouldn't play with him again. Especially if I got stuck in the game with him, my multiple deaths in the game being trivial to him.

First Strike is Book 1 in A Time Loop RPG by Linda Will. John has built a great character who can kill quickly, but can also die fast. Since the book is only 76 pages, I was able to read in one setting. I think that anyone who enjoys Sr p G will enjoy this story. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
