After almost becoming a monster, Bryce swore off dangerous jobs.
No longer taking risky contracts, he's been enjoying easier mercenary work with his team of misfit girls and seeing old friends when they visit the guildhall.
When a contract turns into a wash, Bryce and his party take on a new one from a baroness, which triggers a series of strange encounters. Between monsters, assassins, and a crazy gang boss infatuated with him, death is around every corner. Then his former master, Bellamy, seeks him out.
An avid reader with a fondness for Fantasy, Sci-fi, and HaremLit Books. I strive to write interesting worlds and characters like those that drew me to these genres. My debut book, Exile: De'Vas Chronicles Book 1, is my aim to achieve that goal. I hope you enjoy the book and the others to come in the future.
This is book #2 in this series so let’s review a bit of the first book: If you are a certain type of mage (and mages come with all sorts of backgrounds and natures) you are able to assume one or more of the attributes of the monsters you best in combat.
"“I’m a merc. If there’s no coin in it for me, I’m not fighting,” Bryce said and he let out a heavy sigh. “You would have backed me up in there against those guards?” “Of course, you’re my master. Even if you won’t acknowledge me as your pupil yet,” Janna answered with a smirk as her tails swished."
Bryce, the Feral Mage, has accumulated an entourage. Vex, Janna, and now, Alice, and several others, each with separate motivations.
The plot is more complicated for many reasons including some wars created by Puppet Master Harold and a female feral mage, Thea, who failed to keep her “aspects” straight and is now a chimera.
Kilgore has built an interesting world but still retains a sort of “frat boy” view of life, conflict and sex. The sex is pedestrian and conveniently (for some of the readers) is confined to several chapters that can be skipped in their entirety without losing any of the plot.
Bryce is the author’s main character, and we get his backstory in this volume. Kilgore takes some care to show us how this feral mage evolves both in his view of the world around him and in the way he sees friendship and duty.
This D&D type world has many conventional races (elf, dwarf, gnoll) and monsters, but Kilgore does enough within those outlines to feel he has something to add. One puzzling addition are the people in “beastform” (cat, wolf, fox, etc.) that otherwise have mostly human interests and motivations. Kilgore seems fixated on tails (his preference is for long and bushy) and he gives some characters multiple tails (up to nine!) but never explains how, if they are wearing clothes or armor, these tails are accommodated.
Enjoyed this and already on to the next one. Does a better-than-average job with the sidekick characters and flowed pretty well. No complaints and I enjoyed it, so 5 stars.
This second book in the series was really strong. We get to know more people, more potential women to join the harem, and more of the overarching plot is exposed.
The harem is now starting to look like a harem, with a second lover being added. It's a nice, slow development, all while seeds are planted for potential others to join. The first lover is orchestrating some of it, but only with those she feels would make sound "pack" family.
The plot is nicely woven, and intriguing. I am very much looking forward to how things move forward.
I'm still onboard. The Harem elements are contained and the characters are being developed. Sure it's a little creepy that all the female characters seem drawn to the protagonist but it's not beyond the pale... yet.
Having to fight all your aspects every time you go "Chimera" is a drag, and it's not clear if time is passing in the real-world while this is happening. On the other hand, incurring a cost every time you go truly OP, is good for balance.
I would say it's a decently entertaining read. The setting is still interesting, and there's plenty of action throughout the book. The most interesting thing, imo, is the feral mages, and in this book we start getting into the history/mystery of them and their powers.
There are a few things that I wasn't really a fan of in the book. The first is... not necessarily the pacing of the story, but the scope of the story covered in this book. I wouldn't say that the pacing in the book is slow, as I think the story flows relatively well, and the action in particular I think helps it feel like things are progressing at a fair rate. But still, when I look back on the book... it feels like very little actually happened? Then, despite it being the namesake of the book, we don't actually get to the chimera hunt contract until almost 2/3rds of the way into the book. It's a relatively short book at around 350 pages, so there's only so much you can do, but I still think more time could have been spent on the stuff that was more important to the plot. My final complaint is I kind of feel like the harem aspect of the book is a little weak, and I think Vex is by far the weakest/worst character. I swear the majority of her lines in this book are "My Bryce". She seems really immature, and she has no real character outside of her affection for/jealousy over Bryce. I don't mind an overly possessive love interest, but I wish she had more agency and character outside of her relationship with Bryce.
Overall, though I have my complaints, it's still a relatively entertaining read, and it's pretty short. In many ways I feel like the events that happen in this book feel like they're setting up for much bigger events further in the series. So, in the way that the events happening 30% of the way into a book might be less interesting than the events happening 80% of the way into the book, I felt like this book was a little lacking, but I am interested to see where the author takes the story moving forward.
I enjoyed the story, though I think a lot of that hinged on my willingness to accept the whole "puppetry" aspect as "it's magic." Magic had to do a lot of the heavy lifting here to make this feel remotely plausible. It's otherwise an interesting setting, and I find it remarkable how often haremlit produces some of the most innovative and interesting magic systems.
Beyond that, I'd categorize this series as one of those haremlit series where the harem elements feel tacked onto an otherwise stand-alone fantasy story. Make all the party members beautiful women with often-noted amazing breasts - check. Have swishing tails - check. Have at least one candy fetish - check. Stir in liberal amounts of flushing and blushing - check. Add two or three gratuitous, throwaway sex scenes - check. Decant one haremlit series.
So far 5 books and two different stories. And love them both. I'm curious if feral 3 will be next or de'vas 4. I love the character and their interactions. And I like that the sex scenes are not excessive. Some other authors I need to skip an entire chapter to skip that. With Chase I don't feel the need to skip it. So TY. It was difficult to put the book down when I needed to do things "Just one more paragraph" then two chapters later I manage to stop. Such good writing.
This second book builds on the first perfectly. it is well done and flows along at a good pace.
Chase Kilgore has done an excellent job in this series so far. I have high hopes for the next book.
Bryce is an excellent MC. believable with real consequences that affect him. His group is unique and board and makes the story fun and exciting to read.
I recommend this series for anyone looking for a slightly different style of harem book. Solid 4 stars.
This story starts fun but by the second book we are talking song of ice and fire levels of villains plotting schemes in the background and an ally that may be more issues than she is worth, but hey crazy just hits better. Can't wait to see how the chimeric champion grows in the next book
The book starts almost the day after the other one ends. Bryce and Vex became lovers in the last book. Alice is now safely at the Guild hall, where she works as a maid and is happy. The author adds a bit of humor to his story that I really enjoy. I do feel that there was a little bit of a plot hole at the end. Maybe it will be handled in book three.
The story of the book just keeps getting better. All of our characters are amazing. I love when books have properly done multiple POVs. This book does that fantastic. I'm looking forward to the next one.
The focus is entirely on the harem, which is very forced. The clueless attitude of the main character is boring, and the main political plotline is just tacked on. This is filler and set up, and nothing else.
It puts a pause on where I thought the plot was going to slow down and collect more barmaids. Some of the new developments look to be potentially interesting. It was good overall, but now I have to wait to see where it goes from here.
a great sequel that will leave you wanting the next book
Great story so far, I have been liking the character and plot progression. I am very excited to see how this series continues and hopefully I won’t have to wait too long before book three is released.
Good sh*t, we need more of this plot centered haremlit. The magic system and world building were stand outs of me. Everything just works, this series has potential for top five status, we'll see if it can stick the landing.
Love the story, characters, development, and the plot points ramping up. Enjoyable characters with easy reading but good immersion. Looking forward to next book
