Die Reihe geht super spannend weiter! ✨💫

Sett is set on scorched earth if he can’t have his way, but his ‘kill people’ therapy doesn’t sit well with Nina. Now that she’s reunited with her other beau, however, things might finally be Az she likes it, provided anybody lives long enough to enjoy it.

I really like Nina, the character, and I think I like her better than Nina, the manga. There’s a lot to enjoy here, make no mistake, but I do think the weight of its narrative is at odds with the weight of its desires as a romance.

Okay, enough fluff, it’s Sett. Sett is the problem. While it’s terribly amusing to see how the fanbase and assistants are split down the middle over Az and Sett, it’s kind of a thing that he’s just a tsundere killing machine. Your opinion may vary. But the contortions the plot takes to keep him around feel really contrived this time out, bloodlust or no.

And I don’t hate the driving action at the start, when Sett is deluded enough to think that killing Nina is going to solve the problem of him feeling ways about stuff. And even the way that Nina once more may perhaps (by which we mean definitely) have magic powers.

What they do with Sett after that, however, is pretty lame. Nina pays her own (more interesting) price for her actions, but the Sett stuff feels entirely like narrative fiat to keep his butt in the frame as a rival. Which is doubly annoying because they haven’t done near enough with Az in three or four volumes.

The little bits of Az being jealous and exasperated in a charmed way with Nina are good, but everybody just kind of nodding in agreement to bring the mass murderer along with them is a little much for me. It’s nice to be reminded of why Az and Nina are a thing to begin with though.

What also kind of irked me is that we left the palace, went to prison, but then end up at a different palace filled with the same people. It’s like the plot literally circled itself, with the same people and the same motivations.

Outside of that deja vu feeling and the Sett stuff, it’s not so bad at all. I do largely chalk this up to Nina and her continuing plucky heroine act, which has definitely carried the day, even if she’s relatively naive at times for somebody who allegedly grew up on the street.

She often behaves true to herself, which is equally often counter to what you might necessarily expect. And she might be naive, but she’s no fool either. It’s not like evil Prince Twerp had any shocking motivation or anything, but it’s nice to see that he’s so duplicitous that he gets outplayed because of it.

There’s just something off about this volume I cannot quite put my finger on, but the repetition and the handling of Sett I mentioned do make me think that’s a good chunk of the issue. This current plotline has run a bit longer than I think it had legs for and I wouldn’t mind seeing it somewhere new. It’s also becoming a little trite with the ‘friendship and caring saves it all’ message.

4 stars - I mean, I’ll let it have it again because Nina’s great and I’ll take a positive role model in an okay story over the reverse any day of the week. Just… something a bit different, please.

Vol. 6 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 7 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 8 ★★★☆☆

Thank god this prison arc is over. For me, the highlight of this volume is seeing Sett confront Nina. Seeing his internal turmoil play out is so delicious. Also, I was surprised by the turns the story took. I was fully prepared for Nina to insist on staying in Galgada instead.

I’m so sad that I have to WAIT for the next volume. Darn Libby.

Recap: sett wants to kill her, but can’t. Nina saves sett from falling off the cliff. She goes blind and he goes into a fugue state. Az takes them to Bidoh’s territory to go back to Fortna. There, they rest before the King shows up with Toat. Toat poisons the water supply and King calls him out for it. Ends with King attacking Nina but Az, Sett, and Holt show up to protect her.

4.5 stars. This seems more like build- up of relationships with some resolution of plot points, but I'm still in love with this story and hopeful for where it goes.

Agonizing to have caught up on the current physical English releases and to have to wait for the rest now. I'm not sure what the final volume count is supposed to be...I think there are 16 out in Japan (13 available for English preorder), and in volume 8 Rikachi said it was about halfway through.

Since that author's note also said the endgame was being telegraphed through foreshadowing, I paid close attention to this one...is the cover coincidental or a very clear hint? Because we have Sett holding Nina's bridal veil and staring straight at her, while Az is on her other side, holding his stolen crown, his attention fixed entirely on it.

There's also a panel partway through this volume where Bidoh is talking to Nina about how to sort out your feelings, and how to identify an "infatuation" vs lasting love. The "just an infatuation" speech button is over Az's head, on the right side of the panel, while "love" is on the left side, below Sett's head.

So. We'll see.

The pacing is a little frantic in this volume, maybe because Rikachi realized it needed to be sped up and we couldn't spend a solid third of a shoujo series in a prison. I'm not entirely sure how they suddenly had a special cave exit they could sneak out of - maybe that's how Sol was originally going to help Nina escape by herself? - but our little group leaves Prince Yor behind to greet his rescuers and deal with the prison reform, and sets off for Fortna, with Azure finally getting his way.

Except for the part where Nina insists on bringing Sett with them.

This was an outcome I was not expecting and am somewhat delighted by. But it's complicated.

The first chapter is this brutal, brilliant, beautiful fight between Nina and Sett, where Nina points out, shrewdly, that Sett hasn't actually been trying to kill her. He is...but he isn't. He's waging a massive internal battle, and he's panicking because in order to keep third parties safe from Sett's attacks, she pulls him outside of the prison, to a rope bridge over a snowy canyon. The thing is...Sett had been using those "innocent" (some of them were prison guards) outsiders as a sort of buffer to keep him from actually hurting Nina.

"There's no one to stop me," he says. "Please, someone. Stop me."

Suddenly that three way fight with Azure and Sol is put into new context...even with them being such skilled fighters, it felt slightly unrealistic for neither of them to come out of it with any real wounds. And that's...probably because a part of Sett's torn-up brain was telling him that as long as they were standing in his way, Nina was safe. From him.

Does it make sense? No. But that's how mixed up he is inside. He loves her and he HATES that he loves her, and he wants to wipe everything he loves out of existence, but he absolutely despises that he's feeling that way. He's fighting an almost literal internal demon, and Nina...Nina sees that somehow. Maybe it's her star people power. Maybe it's just her innate goodness. But she's drawn to Sett in a way Azure can't understand and is becoming more and more unhappy with.

Nina and Sett literally save each other's lives, at the same time and on the same bridge. When a nearby volcano starts erupting (a weirdly out of nowhere event that isn't exactly addressed later...maybe that was connected to Nina's emotional distress though?), it shakes the ground and weakens the bridge. Nina steps on a cracked board and starts to fall through - but Sett shoves her back and falls instead, just catching himself with one hand.

Nina lunges for him, holding him by the sleeve and begging him to pull himself up, even after he tells her that he could just pull her down with him and kill them both. You wouldn't, she says. Or you wouldn't have saved me.

So Sett reaches up, knocks her hand away from his, and shoves her back, again, because he sees the ropes shredding under his weight. Then he lets go, accepting his fate. He's going to be like that priest who raised him, driven insane by "love" that was only ever selfish and violent and twisted into something that wasn't love at all. At least he hasn't killed the woman he loves.

But Nina, who has never accepted fate as something unchangeable...leaps after him. And uses her star powers to give them a softer landing on the snowy canyon floor.

I don't really understand what happened with her vision, or how Sol could say he didn't see any physical damage, when she was literally bleeding from her nose and eyes...but the implication seems to be that she used too much power, probably without being used to it, and temporarily blinded herself.

Mostly, it appears to be a good excuse to force her back to Fortna...because when Azure tries to take her with him, she refuses. Again. She won't leave Sett. She promised she wouldn't let go of his hand, and she never will.

Azure buries his feelings, for now, and tells her that in her current state, she can't take care of Sett anyway. She reluctantly agrees...but she refuses to leave him behind for his countrymen to find and (supposedly) to take care of. How would they treat him? No one even knows what's wrong.

Sett, it appears, has locked his soul away because the trauma's too deep and he literally cannot function anymore.

That scene was stunning, too...Sett making the decision that he's TIRED of just being someone who hurts and hurts and hurts others, endlessly. He never wants to hurt Nina again. So he just shuts himself off, like a war machine that's had its wires disconnected.

At this point, he's kind of like Zuko during his redemption arc, when his own body turns against him because he's so torn up inside over what the right course is and whether he's even able to change.

I don't really know how we're going to come back from that and how long it will take Sett to become himself again - that softer version who'd been falling in love with Nina. And I'm kind of confused by the fact that he, Azure, and Sol all reveal themselves to the Galgadan king in the final panel of this volume, when they'd been hiding away in Bidoh's house. But...sure. Those are some of the plot points that felt kind of messy. We'll see how they get hashed out.

Nina ends up taking pity on Toat, too, who was kind of twisted by his upbringing and expectations as well. Not as horrifically as Sett, but his mother was connected to a political group that the current king is trying to completely excise from any sort of power, so those conspirators were always whispering away in his ears.

At some point Nina should probably stop forgiving everyone, but I suppose second chances are a core part of her personality. Everyone in her life, even the ones she cares about, have brutalized her in some way, so if she gives up on anyone who treats her badly, there'd be no one left. Which is pretty rough but kind of the point of her story, I think.

I wish I could blast through the rest of the volumes now, but I don't really want to read them online, so I'll just attempt to be patient and wait for the rest of the story to trickle in.

Nina has unleashed her power to save Sett.
Nothing much really happen in this volume and it is one of my least favorite.
Sett is a former shell of himself.
Toat basically is the vilan and hates Nina.
Bidoh wants Minerva-his territory-to trive so he is helping Azure and Nina.

King Noa does not have a strategic plan to finish the rebellions in the other stades and how to gain power to control Fortna.

Sett is barely in the picture and everything is dull.

Extrait :

THESE COVERS GET MORE AND MORE BEAUTIFUL.

But also. Do you know what series keeps hurting my soul? Especially because each one ends with a cliffhanger of sorts.

This one.

Do you know what series I love so terribly much?

Also this one.

I love this series so so so much. I love Nina and how earnest she is. She is also hilarious even without meaning to be. This is an excruciatingly slow burn series, and I hope that it doesn't end up breaking my heart at some point.

Also in happy news: I saw that vol. 1 has a physical release date!

Nina is Nina. I know what I am getting into each time I pick it up and that is not a bad thing. I am not getting into the Az vs Sett debate because my mind keeps changing on that. Nina is a very compelling heroine and is capable of kicking ass and take Care of herself even when blind. I always have a good time with this series. Would have gotten five stars but I did have some issues. Mostly that the “big reveal” was pretty obvious with Toat.

I am simply having the BEST reading time atm!!

This volume made me cry at times then kick my feet. Talk about a real rollercoaster!

I adore Nina - she’s a loveable soul who’s trying her best despite everything turning to shit around her.

The writing is fabulous, the artwork is gorgeous and the storyline utterly addictive!

My new favourite manga series!

Too short! (╥﹏╥)

After waiting months for the next volume it ended up painfully short. Practically a filler episode.

Loving the plot twists

Yes I'm glad Azure finally puts Nina in her place (tells her how she never thinks about how he feels). Unfair...

Thank God for his maturity, for I can keep up with Nina ditching him.

Loved the ending! The three men protecting her ♡
