Dan Mora is basically the DC house artist at this point. While he’s settled into an appropriately workmanlike style, there are some standout moments here, namely the double-page spreads quilting together moments of Superman’s life, past, present, and potential.

PLEASE DON’T DO THIS TO ME!! I HAVEN’T READ INFINITE CRISIS YET, PLEASE NOOOOO! Joking aside, I AM ROCKING WITH THIS ISSUE AND THIS NEW EVENT! I am so glad they finally confirmed and put to bed that the legion of darkseid is in fact from the absolute universe. Everything I was Ewing seemed to confirm that, but I still wasn’t sure if somehow darkseid got to the future and corrupted our legion. I’m gonna need a new legion series STAT, I want to see my super team so bad, I love them! So we have seen the trinity from the legion of darkseid gathering info and stalking Superman for some time, they see him as the exact opposite to everything their lord, darkseid, represents. So of course they want a shot at taking him out and making it easier for Darkseid once he decides to come back. Which is absolutely wild to hear from saturn girl herself that darkseid is in fact planning on coming back, I figured he wouldn’t bother.
But the legion is actually on Clark’s mind, he returned to Smallville and retrieved his own legion ring from his room, remembering back to the time he was SuperBoy and the legion offered an outlet to really be himself. But he can’t stop remembering back to Henry and Lana’s wedding in the summer of Superman special, when Validus accidentally showed up when he was running from the future. He’s worried, and rightfully so, and wants to go check on them and see what’s up. With his Ma’s blessing and reassurance, Superman went out to a tree with an “L” carved into it and setup his ring to ping it. I’m not exactly sure what this is? Is this like a really obscure tech thing that lets him call on the legion? Either way, who answered was not what he wanted as Saturn girl from the legion of darkseid flew down to him. She began circling him, studying the mental barriers he has up, and just couldn’t understand why darkseid sees him as a threat. This immediately enraged Superman, getting the exact response she wanted. She is starting to peer I to his mind, she knows he is wonder about the rest of the legion. At the very least she knows where lighting lad and cosmic boy are…currently flying next to the watchtower ready to unleash their powers on it! And as the watchtower is one giant metal cage, it is there to bend to cosmic boy’s will! At this moment I immediately realized none of what I was looking at was real and this was all Saturn girl inside Superman’s head, trying to break him and force him to cross the line. But wow if it is not insane to see the legion as bad guys and to see the entire watchtower fold in on everyone inside. That is sadistic.
Superman immediately flies up at top sped and starts bashing in cosmic boy’s, all while lighting lad flies down for the next target…Ma Kent. But the time Superman can hear what is happening, it’s too late…only getting there after she is dead to start beating in lightning lad’s head. But as he is punching, Superman started to come to his senses, realizing what Saturn girl is doing to his mind! He begins to push back, and suddenly the two of them are walking through his memories with the legion and the accomplishments in his life, only for Saturn girl to lay everything out for him: you don’t matter and nothing you have ever done matters, the future they are from the only truth is that: darkseid is. Saturn girl begins to lock Superman away in his own mind to force him to repeat his mother’s death over and over again, but then Superman got a helpful hand through the time trapper! He was able to attack Saturn girl’s defenseless body as she was solely focused on invading Superman’s mind. Time trapper was then able to teleport the two of them away, yelling at Superman that he tried to warn him and that they are now out of options. With Saturn girl left screaming in the wind, it seems that darkseid also caught wind of what just happened and he is furious. He told her not to engage Superman and she disobeyed him…oopsy. Darkseid orders her to gather the rest of the legion as there is another that could endanger his plans they must now protect. Suddenly the ground comes up and swallows Saturn girl in a hellish blaze, teleporting her away before returning back to normal as if it never happened. Wow, Darkseid’s new power on display.
We jump back to time trapper and Superman as the time trapper rips Superman through time. Time trapper lays it out simple against Superman’s orders to return to Smallville, they need to save the future to save everyone. But time trapper can’t go on this journey with him, last time they fought and he returned to the future Darkseid’s legion was waiting for him and tortured him for information on Superman. Which is why time trapper brought Superman here to join forces with trapper’s allies. As Superman looks around it appears they are in Smallville, but this isn’t his own Smallville. As it turns out they are bringing back the time trapper pocket dimension storyline! Once a post crisis plot point to give a big middle finger to the LOSH and tell them that SuperBoy never existed and trapper was just gaslighting them the entire time, which turned into a hellish world overtaken by Zod and his cronies with the only surviving member being the protoplasmic Lana who would become supergirl. Baring all that aside (as I recently read that storyline, lol) this is now the home of…SuperBoy prime!! Who is more than ready to kill some “nerds.” Does he usually break the fourth wall? CRAP, I am missing so much more by not reading infinite crisis! I haven’t even read invasion! yet, cut me some slack!

A solid start to what seems to be another interesting run by Williamson. The artwork is just straight up beautiful and the character we see return are absolutely great. This story pulls things we learned in the summer of Superman special as well as the beginning of DC All In. Superman when done right, hopeful, optimistic, a beacon of light but also determined and focused to get the job done always pull me in so off to a great start here.

Es cierto que no era consciente la buena idea que es convertir a la Legión de Super Héroes en la maléfica fuerza personal del Darkseid Absolute hasta que este número me recuerda la importancia para Superman. Siendo claves en su pasado formativo como héroe en la juventud en Smallville.

I love the Legion of Superheroes and seeing the alternative take to the Great Darkness Saga is perfect. An event is coming, and will shake Superman to his core. Darkside is.

A very strong start to the new story arc. Seeing the flashback panels was a nice touch and Mora's work is phenomenal. I am excited to see what happens next.
