Mediocrity should be the title of this series. But I don’t know if that’s too cruel. Can Mehhh [shrugs] be a title? This latest entry in the Unbound series continues to do poorly what this series has always done poorly, and falters on the one thing it did well.

This book took me a couple weeks to finish. I think I picked it up the day it came out, but read three full books and started another while picking at this one. I didn’t really catch a good reading pace until this book entered its climatic set piece act. Before that, the politicking and groundwork for the final act dragged and could not consistently hold my attention. And that is because, for me, the plot of this series has always been its biggest weak spot, but not by much. It’s closely followed by its flat, trope characters.

Speaking for myself, that alone isn’t a reason to not read a series. Power fantasy is pulp fiction. It’s not meant to be literature, just a fun way to pass the time, and enjoy the vicarious payoffs of good triumphing over evil. In fact, I think plot is probably the least important factor in writing a good progression series, as the reason we read them is for the progression and the payoffs of that progress we invest in as readers.

The plot of this series is as generic as it gets. Youthful Earth male pulled into an alternate reality or different world. He enters a world where magic is suppressed by some alliance of evil deities and their earth-bound counterpart. Yet some cataclysm is coming and the world is not prepared. Thankfully, our MC is the key to success against this apocalypse. But he must unite others of his kind, find allies, and overcome the deities’ minions first.

Again, that alone isn’t a deal killer. The ways other authors in this genre set their generic plot series above others is by focusing on those other aspects of progression as a genre that prop up this genre. Those are characters, magic system, world building, combat, and progression.

One of this series’ positives is the pace of progression. Unlike some series, like DOTF spending eight books in one of the first level grades, this series has a consistent and concise pace of leveling through the grades it establishes. Add to that, is that this series has a clear ending, and that is coming soon, perhaps with the next book. That’s a large plus to me, as again some other popular series in this genre fall into a snail’s pace of progression, both of magical level and of plot, to the point where there’s no ending in sight.

However, the magic system and world building of this series is as generic as the plot, so can’t say it adds anything to the series at all.

But in a close second to plot for worst aspect of this series is its characters. All the characters of this series are especially flat, even for this genre. Felix is a total good guy. Willing to do anything for anyone. He never makes a bad decision or does something wrong. As for all the side characters, they can all be easily defined in a short paragraph each. But they’re all equally as good.

I understand this good versus bad is a cliche of power fantasy, but that doesn’t mean a little nuance doesn’t make for a more relatable and satisfying read. The bad guys are equally bad. They are so cliche, it makes we wonder if this is satire. I mean the dialogue from the big bad at the end of this book is just so utterly ridiculous it undermines the world building and plot.

Before this point, this big bad character was always presented as someone trying to prepare the world for the coming cataclysm, but in a flawed way. And perhaps even being played by the deities themselves, which is a reason for the MC to get involved. But this big bad proves herself to be sadistic, cruel and over-the-top cliche villain. I don’t understand how a person with that kind of character leads the most organized and powerful nation on this world for literally centuries.

For the last aspect I’ll discuss, combat, I have always rated this highly in this series. For all its other faults, it has done combat well. There’s lots of it, and it’s woven interestingly with progression to feel like a rewarding enough payoff to make the series worth a read. And though the first 2/3rds of this book is generally lacking, the setup and first paces of the final act really felt like the author was doing what he did best. A really cool plan to conquer this big bad’s city and take the big bad out to allow the good guys to then prepare for the cataclysm in the next book.

This is what we want to see as an audience in this series. We’ve invested in the progression to this point, we want to see the fruits of that. But how is it that so many authors undermine this? Plot devices and contrivances, that’s how. And for the first time in this series, our author plays that card.

What do I mean by that? Sure things don’t always go to plan, in fact that’s a notorious rule for combat in this world. I have no problem with the trap being set by the big bad. I have a problem everything that comes during and after it. If the MC can’t find the energy to defend his girlfriend right after he’s freed, it’s not because of some aspect of the story that established that, it’s because that’s the way the author wants the climax to play out. Because MC literally fights the big bad on his own for the next 5-10% of the book. That’s a contrivance. He wins, not by reaping the culmination of his progression, but by a plot device he absorbs… which of course doesn’t seem to help him do anything but keep pace. And everything he does is easily shrugged off by the big bad… until it isn’t and he one-shot wins by kicking his sword into her chest…. What even is that?

That’s not a payoff. That’s cheap. The entire fight was cheaply set up, cheaply dragged out, and cheaply ended. Why can’t he win as a consequence of one or more of: tactics, strategy, and his progression? As a consequence of his arc as a character not just because the author reached his word count and just ends it with kicking a sword?

Other big mistakes in this book: It’s been almost a year since the last book in this series, that alone says this book was trouble, so why isn’t there a recap chapter? I barely remember what series this is, and the author just drops us in with no context. The semi-cliffhanger at the end is a travesty. No one likes cliffhangers at the end of books in this genre. We hate them.

The author is clearly setting up for the final arc of this series, that’s fine as I’ve said above. But the author gave us no time to revel in THIS victory. This is my message to any author writing in this genre, the reason anyone at all reads power fantasy is for payoffs. There’s other ways to introduce a semi-cliffhanger into the end of your book without bulldozing from the climax of the story straight into it. We can pause and have a breath and enjoy the victory, and then in the epilogue or whatever, we can stir the pot for the next book.

I don’t know, it’s amazing to me how many authors in this genre genuinely don’t seem to understand why people read it. This author has repeatedly shown he’s average at best, but this book might have sealed the series for me as being mediocre.

With this book, I don’t feel comfortable keeping this series on my favorites list on my profile, even if it was dead last. I feel that those series should be ones I’d actively recommend to anyone interested in this genre, and just don’t feel the overall breadth of this series fits that bill anymore.

yeah, that was probably the most mangled ending I’ve seen in years.

Giant buildup. Deus ex machina out everyone’s butts. That was embarrassingly bad, to the point of needing to re- read entire sections to figure out what happened.
Besides needing an editor, the author has found himself in a MC power plunge with no escape- and seemingly no plan… I’ve enjoyed the story thus far, but WHOOOO BOY can we please get the series wrapped up? If the bulk of the story is now spent on secondary characters and diverging plot lines, it’s time to stop and move on, especially at… what is this? Book 11? And enough unfinished content and plots to fill another 6 books at this pace… good luck to you, Mr. Gonnella!

That was. Absodamnlutely! AwesomeSauce! But I gotta say that the beginning of the book was kinda boring... but I loved Felix as he worked with his friends to help them gain their master tier getting them ready for the fight of their lives!!! And yeah you guessed it the book just got better and better! Loose ends were tied up there was an astounding reveal too. Oh, and maybe Pit has a girlfriend. But wow the ending did Nicoli Gonnella hafta leave it there... Really!

A few hundred pages of repeated MEH

I was looking forward to this book since the last few were doing pretty well. Maybe my expectations were just too high? Idk. I will be using generalities without specifics to limit spoilers.

Extremely overlong "action sequences" and over used clichés where, for no seeming reason, the antagonists just happen to have a plethora and limitless amount of surprises to make the plot move forward. Instead, it is annoying, frustrating, exasperating, and lazy (imo). It would have been better to just have Felix be inferior than to make up some ludicrous and desperate grasps...smh

I even reread the book because I wanted to confirm a thought. It was confirmed; about 60% of this book can be skipped and it would have ZERO bearing...at least right now. However, due to what i have seen thus far, I highly doubt they ever would. In essence, over half of the book comes off as "filler", and the other half has about 20% of enjoyable reading.

Im REALLY hoping the conclusion is exponentially better.

Mr. Gonnella is among the best writers in the so-called "LitRPG" genre. He's a good writer, period. He's in that league. Some of the big names in this scene are not good, or even passable, but they're more popular. Go figure.

His action scenes are so damn good, you might break a sweat. Heck, you might actually level up your reading skills.

He's done exceptional work with these characters, especially Archie, Pit, and Mauvim. I enjoy characters other than the protagonist having depth and being allowed to grow.

I saw a couple of reviews complaining that this book is overlong, and that there are slow parts. No and no. It's as long as it needs to be, and it's got to be around 75% pure action. It's like reverse Wheel of Time. The "slow" parts aren't really slow, and neither are they boring. They're just not punching you in the face.

He still invents the coolest names for stuff, period. He's set that bar pretty dang high. Read it!

“Felix didn’t answer”

Wow I remember why I dropped this series several years ago WOW. Felix’s personality is still non-existent - 11 books and all I know is he’s stubborn, I guess. Whenever there’s real dialogue Felix has questions that every character answers (for some reason) and when they ask him questions in return, because he asked first, he doesn’t answer or shrugs. It’s so frustrating. The writing is above average but you can skim through entire conversations or chapters and not lose the plot. Nothing meaningful is ever discussed because the author is afraid of making his protagonist multi-layered. If you’re reading this just read everything in bold and you’ll be fine to continue to the next book in the series.

I've enjoyed this series thus far, but my stomach for broken power systems that the progression fantasy genre seems to spone feed us is at an end.

penultimate it might be, but this is where I stop.

I've always felt sick of the constant disregard of the ranking system bypassed by the monumental plot armour within this series, but back then I just loved power flexing, but now with my tastes growing more refined, dear I say, I find my self at a pain for such disregard for what one has already created.

Felix a master, doesn't just defeat paragons, noooo, he constantly beats the hell out of god's, all due to some titles. well in the trash been this goes.

Wow! Just wow!!

This book has been a roller-coaster of emotions. So much needed to be wrapped up in this and soon to be book 12, and i was kinda worried it would be rushed. But this felt different, each page made me want to read the next, and the one after, ot was a good rush. I'm sad to see that book 12 is the last, but hopefully we'll have a new series set on the Continent, I want to learn more about its history. Who the first ones were, how the System truly came to be. Just so much potential.

I finally have patience to tap out more since this is the last book before the next is released 😖
This series is seriously epic. Love how spells, affinities, titles, and whatnot converge into your personal "soundtrack." Mine would be metal 🤘
I get WoT vibes, subtly, and I wonder if Gonnella was influenced by Jordan. Wouldn't be surprised if so.
FINALLY! Felix and Ves are together! ❤️❤️❤️ (even if it did happen a few books ago).
Beef's dad is an absolute unit!
This was such an awesome battle! F*ck the cultists and f*ck their nasty ass gods!
NEED NEXT BOOK!!!

Slightly disappointing

I love this series and the author is extremely talented. This book didn’t do it for me though. The first half was all rpg mechanics. Was it really necessary to have the first 10 percent of the book focus on the MCs skills leveling up and then another 40% dedicated to his companions doing the same? I would have given it a 3 but the last 20% was very good. I hope the final book is more in line with the excellence I’ve come to associate with this series.

I honestly cannot complain about this book. What really grabbed my attention when I first started this series was the primordials and gods. I got both in this book. I can’t wait until Felix fights the Whale Maw. Anything related to the Endless Maw really grabs my attention. She was my favorite antagonist. I hope the next book focuses more on Felix’s growth rather than his companions. I’m really interested in his cardinal beast, powers related to the Endless Maw, and Verudan.

Great series but this book needs more editing.

Great book over all if you have kept up with the series so far. Definitely worth continuing but this book needs more editing. About half way through there are lots of simple mistakes and wrong or misspelled character names.

Nothing that keeps you from understanding but it breaks the flow and immersion. I can only hope the next and final book is much better edited.

Solid continuation of the story. This one dragged a little more, as there were fewer major story events. While those were significant enough to warrant the extra treatments, they did end up feeling a little verbose, and I found it challenging to maintain my attention at times.

Still, looking forward to the next chapter!

Brilliant

Brilliant instalment to an amazing series, really looking forward to the next book but also dad the stories ending. Going the next series you write is just as good. Felix's journey has been long and hard but it has been a fun Acton packed read. You g defiantly got a good amount of Acton and world building in the series so far.

A wild ride from start to finish

From the very first page this book has action. The absolute madness going on in this book was borderline overwhelming, but in the best way. Each section of the book just gets crazier and by the end the stakes are high as they can be. Can't wait to read the next one

I could criticize the carbon copy villains, the pointless stats that do nothing, the identical "I willpower against gods" conflicts, or the nonsensical power levels, but it is much simpler to describe this book as what it is at its core.

This book is like if Faust was done by a writer whose classical training began and ended with the AP Lang exam, and whose entire diet consisted of children's breakfast cereal. Faux complexity layered with a thesaurus of words he uses correctly maybe 70% of the time.

Another series that is just fully ignoring story overall and just doing random things with little connection.

Add in new pov's, fetch quests, big stat screen reads.

The last book was like 2-3 mini stories and this is similar; this book is not about the MC. ]

Probably my least favorite of the series so far. It just took too long to get interesting. The final third of the book was decent, but nowhere near good enough to justify a better rating. Still definitely looking forward to the next book. 👍🏽

What's to be said. This series continues to deliver the suspense, plot twists, character development, and storyline that can only come from a master story teller. Bravo! Can't wait for the next step!

Thankfully, it's not yet the last book.

I don't know why this book is not mentioned more in litRPG tier lists... It's top of my list, with solid 5's.

This was a well written addition to the story. The last four hours is a battle sequence, but there is growth with in that as well. I think this is the penultimate book for the series.

A good entry in the series, but Nicoli needs an editor.

I've been reading since book one, as you'd imagine. This had been an excellent series overall, and there were great parts in Chains, but this book is pretty bloated. It could easily have been 300 pages shorter. Everything is building to a climax, and the next book may be the last, but it doesn't have to be 1100 pages to be good.
