Claimed By the Mothman: A Spicy Paranormal Romance

Rate this book
Thirty-six-year-old Nell Townsend came to Greymarket Towers looking for a fresh start. What she found was Sig Samora—a paranormal harbinger wearing a cryptid's body and an impossible pull she can't explain.

They're not supposed to happen. She's human, fragile, and healing. He's ancient, dangerous, and bound to an ancient ritual that says to touch her is to doom her. But when the Lustrum—a threshold older than civilization—tries to unmake her soul, Sig makes a choice that changes he claims her.

Now Nell is caught in a paranormal bond forged in desperation and desire, navigating a ritual she doesn't understand, and trying to survive an attraction that burns hotter than her rational mind can justify. In a building where the walls have opinions and the neighbors are very, very strange, Nell discovers that sometimes the scariest thing isn't the paranormal danger closing in—it's the cryptid who makes you believe you're his reason to survive it.

A paranormal romance about choosing the monster who chooses you. Includes sentient architecture, forbidden paranormal bonds, slow-burn-to-scorch romance, and a hero with wings and claspers.

For fans of C.M. Nascosta, R. Lee Smith, Ruby Dixon, Karla Doyle, and Michelle Mills

This was a ride, a confusing, atmospheric, engrossing, and interestingly written ride. I’m honestly not sure how to feel about much of the book. I was also engaged, despite the overly wordy language and sometimes jarring writing, because this was a unique offering in the monster romance world. I needed to know how the happy ending came about given how the relationship starts in the rockiest of ways and has a questionable danger lurking in the background. Oh and there’s a sweet mothman, automatic points for that.

Written in third person, multi-POV (including a side character). No ow/om drama (though the h’s ex husband is a tool who does appear briefly). The h was definitely experienced given she was married, I couldn’t get a feel for the H’s past.

Some tropes/themes:
☆ Mothman MMC x human FMC
☆ Divorced FMC starting anew
☆ MMC has an ancient job of lore
☆ Also, he’s kinda awkward
☆ Chaotic and supportive friendships
☆ Loads of cryptid neighbors
☆ Sentient building
☆ Sense of doom
☆ He claims her…and puts them in an uncomfy situation
☆ She has to choose and is overwhelmed
☆ Monster-style wooing
☆ He can bend a table while bending her over it
☆ He’s got monster parts
☆ Magical, possibly sentient ring
☆ All the vivid imagery
☆ Cozy elements - loads of tea and wine
☆ There are footnotes in the prologue and epilogue

The story opens with a h who’s a little lost and feels a lot small. Her ex-husband was cheating on her and while she’s trying to determine next steps, she renews a friendship that results in the perfect job and an invitation to live in an exclusive building. Sometimes it almost felt like the story was about the building honestly, but it’s more focused on an ancient entity being dangerously interested in the h and the H’s attempt to save her. Of course, they genuinely fall in love too.

I do think the characters' backgrounds are not fully fleshed out. At least with each other.

As said earlier, the writing didn’t wholly work for me, but it sure did set the scene. The spicy scenes are also set very clearly lol. The H may not know how to flirt, but he can rail the h until she can barely walk. The physical aspect of their relationship is established prior to the emotional one, primarily driven by instincts and the situation they become enmeshed in. I did feel that their emotional connection had weaknesses, particularly with how their singular date on page has a distraction to it, though does have a strong response to said distraction.

The climax addresses the lingering danger head-on and the ending is HEA. There is a satisfying sense of joy and belonging for both characters with each other and more strength and sense of self specifically for the h. I think others would find the writing less distracting possibly and might enjoy the how the tension progresses between the main characters more. I don’t recall reading anything quite like this, it almost has a horror-ish feel in places, then the mothman is gardening. Do with all this what you will.

Wow!
This was a roller-coaster.
It took me a while to get used to the writing and it took even longer for the MCs to even meet. There was so much of this that I absolutely loved but there was also so many instances where I found myself a bit disappointed. Especially disappointed when there wasn't a lot of time spent on the aftermath of the big event.

I LOVE Sig. He is literally perfect.
I really enjoyed them together and since i'm greedy I wanted more of them being settled but instead, it seemed like the focus shifted to the building. Their ending was satisfying enough, just not to my preferred standards. I'm reading for the romance, even if it's a monster romance, let me see what brought on the exchange of rings, who presented it, who's idea was it? Let me see it all *wink*

If we're going off of how the this sometimes felt too wordy, too flowery, or too metaphorical and at cases even vague then I probably would've rated this lower, especially with all the typos but since i'm here just for the vibes and how much it actually kept my attention i'm going to leave it at a solid 4 star. (If we were going off of Sig alone this would've been 1000000/5, I love him so much 🥰)

I enjoyed reading this a lot! It was cute and charming but with a twist of fantasy, cryptids, and mates! I’m very excited to read the next one!

There were a few noticeable grammar and spelling mistakes that should be looked at, but it was easy to get past. I just wanted to know what happened next!!

Overall, great book! It was nice to read something that kept moving and kept my attention!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Warmte. Pumpkin spice and everything nice.

"'I am Mr. Lyle', the man said, offering a smile as mild as chamomile."

"Nell didn’t answer. She just made a weak noise that sounded like the love child of a moan and a dying bagpipe."

"[...]surrounded by yarn and hooks and what might have once been an attempt at a scarf, but now resembled a fibrous octopus in cardiac arrest."

"[...]rose like a man heading into open heart surgery with only a spoon and a positive attitude."

"Jem hugged her goodbye like she was trying to slip an apology into her bones."

"You are my beloved, Nell. So I will learn your ways. All of them. Even the ones that require shoes.”

A strong 3.95 stars so 4 stars.

I personally felt the building wasn't sentient enough. The Lustrum was lustruming and that was a whole other entity. We are more frequently told what the building does rather than shown its actions.

Quiet halls, respectful coworkers, and a boss who greeted her each morning with a serene nod and asked if she preferred speaking out loud or via written memos.

I loved Nell's workplace+overall boss. So, is her boss Ms Kephra or Mrs Kephra???? Because she starts off as Ms Kephra but later on is referred to as Mrs Kephra.
I loved the writing. It soothed something that I was needing at the time. It got me to read a book and technically I was done with reading for the year.

Everybody and their grandmother was like do not go through the red doors... without actually TELLING her why or what would happen until a couple of chapters in. This is a plot device that irks me to no end. Chapter 5 was very dramatic, but it came at the right moment because I was like if all we are doing is remaining in this holding pattern of dread from everyone, not telling Nell what the Lustrum is, then I'm out.

I got annoyed at the whole Nell was mad at Sig for claiming her bit. It took waaaaaay too long for her to reconcile herself to what was taking place, in a communicative manner, rather than blustering about and then in the end it was very wouldn't you know, when the roles are reversed, guess how she claims Sig?

I loved Goldie for Nell, in that she was the in, the extrovert to Nell's introversion to get us into the story, but I liked her in small doses. I'll be going on with book 2, I haven't quite decided if it is right now or later on, but I will say I think I'll get tired of Goldie at her usual level 1000% very fast.

The smut was hot and as I've said many times before, I'm not necessarily a fan of insect based monster smut, but hey, when an author knows how to write it, they know how to write it.

Edward the ex was mentioned waaaaaaayy too much for my liking. However, Sig with the post market place beat down was magnificent! Magnificent!!!! Magnificent I tell you!!!! It was written very when Harry Met Sally famous cafe scene in terms of the other people's reactions but otherwise in terms of Sig sees Nell, gorgeous, absolutely fucking gorgeous!

Jem smiled, a quiet curve of understanding. “That’s the trick with the real ones, isn’t it? They’re not just who they are with you. They’re still them everywhere else.”

Sig was the ideal monster book boyfriend. From how he thought of, talked with, talked about, dirty talked, worship talked, cared for and even defended Nell. Honestly, if we are being truthful Nell wasn't even at his level of devotion.

Now, some spoilery bits:

So, in conclusion, a great start to the series. I will be reading book 2.

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spicy content 🌶🌶🌶.5/5

This was such a cute, cozy read and honestly one I never wanted to leave. I absolutely loved the whole concept of the building and getting to know its residents, it felt very warm, and inviting while also found-family-ish. I could happily live there and never look back.

Sig and Nel completely stole my heart. Nel is the kind of FMC I always adore, she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to stand up and say enough is enough. And watching her find her strength was so satisfying. And Sig… oh my goodness. He is pure perfection. Protective, gentle, and just devoted in the best way.

One of my favorite things about this book was how mothmans lore was woven into the story. You can tell real research went into it, and I absolutely loved that. It added depth and authenticity without ever feeling heavy or info-dumpy just rich, thoughtful world-building that made everything feel well thought out.

I’m already desperate for Goldie’s book and honestly just want to dive right into the next story, so if you see me reading the next one straight away.. no you dont' and mind ya bussiness haha 😆

Not sure how to describe this book.

Not insta love but not show burn.... i'm the technical terms. Instinctual sex at around 20% but it takes a long time for her to come to terms with everything and things are put on hold.

Loved the whole vibe of this. Goldie is a gem! The sentient building is delightful. Everyone in the building is unique and odd and it's so very normal that it's hilarious. The town sounds like a place is want to live. The only thing I didn't really understand was the Lustrum. I just don't understand its purpose. But it gave an element of spooky to the story. LOVED Sig! His calm presence and willing to literally unmake himself for her...HOT!

4🌶 even though it's a slower burn once they get there it's a lot and really detailed

I think I want to move into Graymarket Towers, but I am not sure the building would accept my more normal life. A cryptid romance, a mystery featuring a sentient building, some very strange and endearing characters and an oddity known as the Lustrum. Nell and Sig definitely heat up the pages, but it's the emotions that really grip the reading.

Loved seeing this new Mothman book, pop up as an ARC and was keen to enjoy, yet another, new author. Another new author top add to my ever growing collection of ebooks. The cover grabbed my attention and do enjoy any Mothman tales. Thoroughly enjoyed Sig and Nell's story. I note that it is part of a series - Greymarket Towers, and look forward to more from this author. :D

It kinda blows my mind that this book only has 64 ratings and 35 reviews at the time I'm writing this. I only found it because I was scraping through page after page of Kindle Unlimited fiction/romance offerings that have anything at all to do with Mothman. I read "sentient building" in the blurb and thought, Eh, sounds weird, I'm in.

If you have KU, you know it's a crapshoot sometimes. But this book? I fricking loved this book.

It's weird, it's fun, and it is so damn charming. Cryptids, a sentient building, mysterious doors, apartments that rearrange themselves and elevators with opinions. Honestly, the only problems I had with this book were the typos, but they were not particularly egregious and I find typos in books from big time publishers that have had way more eyeballs on them. And this book deserves all of the eyeballs! It is so beautifully written, with funny bits, poetic bits and spicy bits, and they all somehow just fit together without any jarring transitions or awkward non sequiturs.

I love this book so much I went and paid for it so I won't lose access to it if I ever ditch KU. If there was a hardcopy to buy, I'd have bought that too (and an audiobook - I would die for an audiobook).

Overall, I just really loved this book. It's going in my favorites collection and will be one I go back to again and again. I can't wait to see what else this author has up her sleeve for her next book!

I was really excited to read this because the fmc Nell was 36 so I was expecting her to be on the mature side. She came across as someone younger and her thoughts and the way she acted was of someone much younger.

If I could rate this on the mmc Sig, it would be five stars. He was kind, respectful, protective, he tried to learn for her. Once he was all in, he did everything he could. I loved him.

What really threw me off was he claimed her to save her life not for any other nefarious reasons. She figures this out, has time to think about but she's still mad. The alternative could've been death or her memories erased but she's mad at HIM.

Despite all that, I still enjoyed this. It's worth it just to read for Sig and the sentient apartment building.

Picking up “Claimed By The Mothman” by K.A. Bower was a no brainer considering just how much I love all things Mothman. However, this was actually my first Mothman romance - maybe even my first Cryptid romance - & boy, is the bar now super high! (Thank you to Book Sirens & K.A. Bower for providing a digital copy for preview - all thoughts & opinions expressed are my own.) I was captivated by this book from quite literally the first sentence of this book, with the prologue that lays out the lore for Greymarket Towers as a location & as its own character. And page after page, I only became more invested in this dual POV, swoony paranormal/monster romance!

We focus on Nell, the human restarting her life who finds herself as the newest resident in a building (& city) where cryptids live open & freely. And on Sig Samora, the Mothman who lives in the (what I like to assume) penthouse of the apartment building. She has sworn off falling into another relationship & losing her agency. He is supposed to be living the life of a harbinger, existing only to witness but never interfere. But then a creepy entity that lives within the building decides Nell belongs to it & Sig decides now is a great time to start interfering.

I absolutely loved this story! The lore is rich & even if I didn’t always fully understand what was happening, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. Also, it feels right that a story involving cryptids would be one where not everything makes sense? (Not in a plot-hole way, but in a “my brain sure doesn’t understand this magical sentient door thing” way.) We also get one of my favorite elements - a building that is a character on its one &, generally, one that I liked! But the real winners are all of the side characters, like the other tenants in the building & Nell’s best friend, Goldie. (I am hoping that she will get her own story in the future!)

Swoony romance. Great lore. Fun side-characters. I need nothing more!

I want to start off by saying that I love the bones of this story. It checks off a lot of boxes for me. Older FMC, monsterous cinnamon roll of an MMC, cozy paranormal setting, all great. However, I was a little let down by how all of those ideas ultimately came together.

The authors writing style isn't my favorite. That isn't to say that it's bad, but most of the time, I found it way too flowery and metaphysical for my taste. It made me feel detached from the characters and the plot. I feel like it also led to some scenes feeling really flat. I also wish that the world building had been clearer. At times, I was unsure of what was going on or if certain paranormal elements were meant to be taken at face value or not.

The characters were cute together, and I adored Sig, but I do wish their relationship had felt more developed. It was a bit too insta-love/lust for me.

So, ultimately, it felt like a good story with good ideas, but I just don't know if the way it came together works for me personally. I will say, I would be interested to return to this world in future sequels, though, just to give it a fair shot.

This is my first true monster romance with my favourite cryptid: Mothman. I LOVED the setting of this story. If you enjoy video games like Control, Alan Wake, or even Silent Hill (to a lesser extent), those are the vibes the setting's apartment building gives.

Both Nell (human) and Sig (mothman) start the story with their own things to work on, and this book lets us see them grow together. There's plenty of found family, made mostly of paranormal beings who inhabit the building with them. I need Goldie and Ezra's book next, please! As for spice level, this book has a handful of excellent open-door intimacy scenes, I think there were maybe five in total?

If you're looking for a paranormal romance with a sweet mothman, a vaguely ominous but charming paranormal apartment building, emotional growth, and plenty of spicy scenes, give this a go!

Thank you to the author for facilitating me with a review copy of this book at no cost and with no obligation. I reviewed this book voluntarily, and all opinions are my own.

Gleeful Goblin Review: I am incapable of passing up a Mothman (or a moth person of any gender to be fair) so when I saw this book and read the somewhat ominous description I knew I had to pick this up. And boy was I right to! The overall setting is reminiscent of the early unsettling feels from The Shining but definitely way before things go full redrum and play with us forever. There's definitely something unusual happening in this apartment building and the author does great with maintaining tension while staying well clear of horror territory.

FMC Nell and our MMC Sig the Mothman have their own foibles and areas where they could grow. The nicest thing about those spaces to grow is that the author structures the story in such a way that both of them can grow together! If you like eerie buildings and spoopy occupants that you get quickly attached to, with a heaping dollop of found family then this is the book for you! 5/5 Stars.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Claimed By the Mothman by K.A. Bower is everything I didn’t know I needed in a paranormal romance—equal parts eerie, heartfelt, and deliciously steamy.

Nell Townsend, fresh from a divorce, moves into Greymarket Towers—a sentient, magical building with secrets in its walls. There she meets Sig Samora, a towering, mysterious Mothman whose job is supposed to be detached and ominous… but claiming Nell changes everything.

The world-building is chef’s kiss—Greymarket Towers feels like a character all its own, from whispering hallways to ominous red doors. The side characters are quirky and warm, the romance is a slow burn that explodes into passion, and the emotional growth for both leads is genuinely satisfying.

If you love:

Paranormal romance with a fresh twist

Found family and magical realism

Monster romance with both heart and heat

… then this is your next obsession.

Verdict: Creative, heartfelt, and just the right amount of spicy. Can’t wait to see more stories from Greymarket Towers.

This was an interesting book, and a bit unlike other paranormal romance books I've read before. Nell is recovering after a divorce when a high school friend invites her to move cities and offers her a job. When Nell moves to town, an apartment in Greymarket Towers opens up. It is a magical building who chooses its residents, and Nell moves in. The building houses humans an cryptids alike, including a mothman named Sig. It's from here things get strange with things like Harbinger's, interdimensional beings, and changing what you are.

Some of that stuff lost me a bit with the Lustrum, what Sig's role in people's lives was, and the overall rules of the world. It was a good book, and the romance between Sig and Nell was great. Sig was so sweet to Nell, and when she claimed him back, it was wonderful. The spicy times with Sig's unique anatomy was hot as well! I plan on reading the second book in the series and think you should give this one a go.

No third act breakup

4/5 on the Spicy Scale

Oh my goodness, this was so so fun! I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. Monster romances are not typically something I gravitate towards, but I have always been interested in the idea of cryptids. Mothman has always been my fav so I jumped at reading this.

While I expected this to be silly, fun, and a bit steamy (which it 100% was,) I WASN'T expecting how heartfelt this was. Getting to see relationship between Nell and Sig grow was spectacular and so sweet, but what I really loved was Nell's character growth. I highly identified with Nell and her insecurities and wish to be smaller in her own life, so I definitely have a soft spot for her as the FMC. Love is used as a stepping stone for her to overcome her personal insecurities and truly live for herself.

Absolutely magical and I cannot wait to see what is in store for Greymarket Towers next. There was not a single character I hated (except for maybe a certain two) and it made me want to move in!

Claimed by the Mothman was utterly and nonsensically delightful! It is possibly the most imaginatively written story I’ve ever read and I absolutely loved every second of it. It was magical, whimsical, liminal, and wholly wholesome. The relationship between Nell and Sig was tumultuous and beautiful all at once. I laughed, cried, then laughed some more. I loved every aspect of this book, from the characters, the world building, and the banter (that frequently had me cackling), to the spice which was perfectly balanced with the plot. Nell’s personal growth throughout the story was positively empowering, especially for someone, such as myself, who has spent their life attempting to make themselves smaller.
5/5 stars, Claimed by the Mothman was so much fun to read and I definitely recommend it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a monster romance lover, Claimed by the Mothman was exactly the kind of cozy, weird, and steamy read I crave. Greymarket Towers is such a fun setting equal parts creepy and charming and I adored the found family vibe with all the quirky paranormal neighbors.

Sig, our mothman love interest, is protective, gentle, and just the right amount of mysterious. His relationship with Nell was sweet, slow-burn, and packed with emotional depth alongside the spice. I also appreciated how the story gave Nell room to heal and grow while still leaning into all the fun monster romance tropes I love.

A few moments were a bit predictable, but the unique setting and heartfelt romance more than made up for it. If you’re into monster romance with a dash of cozy horror and a lot of heart, this is one to add to your list.

Loved it, and ready for book two!

Favorite quote: “You are my beloved, Nell. So I will learn your ways. All of them. Even the ones that require shoes.”
😂 same, Sig, but also those involving pants.

I'm guessing the series will follow different characters for following books (my money is on Goldie for book 2!), because the story for Nell and Sig is tied up so nicely 🎉 what could go wrong, right? 😂 don't jinx me.

My book friends will be so proud for me branching out from werewolves and vampires, but this would even be a good starting point for someone just starting to dip their toes in paranormal romance.

This was such a fun, spicy, and wonderfully imaginative read. The characters are strange in the best way—endearing, vivid, and at times almost poetic. I was hooked from the very beginning.

Our MFC is starting over, moving into a new building bursting with life, where she unexpectedly crosses paths with our MMC—a harbinger who’s meant to observe fate, not interfere with it. But when a mysterious force called the Lustrum tries to unravel her soul, everything shifts, and their lives become tangled in the most deliciously complicated way.

The MMC truly is such a sweetheart oh my my, my heart was awing so much.

- Claiming’s
- Sentient building
- Great side characters
- Personal growth
- Cryptid’s

Generally speaking, I can be really picky about my romance novels and especially paranormal romance, although what I'm looking for isn't always what other people are looking for. This hit most of my preferences. The writing really stood out, and the characters were engaging and fleshed out.

Our Mothman hero Sig was just delightful--a bit eerie, very inhuman, kinda awkward and dorky, painfully earnest. I also enjoyed Nell's character arc and growth. There were a lot of themes, character development, and some super interesting lore and plot.

The romance between them really mattered to each of the characters, not just the story, if that makes sense? They both grew within it.

Overall I am so glad someone recommended this book to me!

Sig is our very sweet but possessive mothman. He is new to a bond and shouldn’t have really had one at all being a Harbinger and all. He is to watch not insert himself. But that is what he did for Nell.
Nell is an unhappy starting over divorce woman. She trust in fate so she moves to a new place at the suggestion of an old high school friend. She didn’t expect to get bonded to a mothman to escape a red door 🚪 that wanted to dissolve her being into nonexistence. But they have a one sided one (on his side) that needs to be accepted all the way (by her) or things for him get bad. So we get a very interesting courtship. Insert members from the Greymarket Towers apartment building lol.

First off I want to say this was my first Monster romance book. I really had no idea what to expect and I am going to be honest, I didn’t have high expectations, but man was I wrong!

This book was amazing! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

The world building and characters were amazing. I felt like I was a part of the community! The way the author described the building and its tenants made you feel like you were walking the halls. Her characters were fun and whimsical and made the story fun!

I truly hope there are more books about Greymarket Towers and its tenants!

I devoured this book. Sig and Nell's story had me flipping the pages. The Greymarket Tower is full of surprises and wonderful characters. There are a lot of twists that keep you guessing. Sig and Nell have a very steamy spicy 🌶️🌶️🔥🔥 bond that defies the order of things. Overall there are lots of emotions, friendships made, a wonderful forever love and a new journey that is positively amazing. Everyone needs a great girlfriend like Goldie I loved her. This is my first book by this author and now I am looking forward to reading more of the books that will come in this series because this story was a delightful read. Looking forward to the next book.

It’s so easy to be swept away into the world of Greymarket Towers. The unique residents never fail to leave you laughing, the Lustrum keeps you guessing , and the chemistry between Sig Samora and Nell Townsend is awkwardly sweet. I loved the laughs, the awkwardness, the raw emotion written. You can’t help but falling in love the book along the way. I feel Nell was one “disaster” Sig never saw coming, but welcomed with open arms.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a fun monster romance with fab characters and an entertaining sentient building. Adding in the other tenants of the building made for a well detailed world. Human divorcee, Nell, is starting over and I was thrilled with her growth. She went from making herself small to owning her full self. Sig is a mothman and never expected to bond to anyone, let alone a human. This is a slow burn romance but once it takes off, it's definitely hot ;P Expect to be captivated when you crack this baby open, first page to last. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book :D
