From New York Times-bestselling author Adriana Mather, comes the next big YA dark academia Alchemy of Souls, following two magically bound teens as they race to solve the mystery of an ancient magical key before it’s too late.

Grayson Stone is no stranger to deception. Under the watchful eye of his uncle, the High Chancellor, he has been well-trained in all four types of magic, all while secretly working against his uncle’s corrupt rule. Years of plans depend on him being marked Gifted during his University entrance exam, proving that he is the perfect heir and gaining his uncle’s trust. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned, and he has only one person to Eloise Belrose.

Raised by a family of Laborers, Eloise is the most unlikely student to become a Mage, but through her hard work and long hours spent practicing she is finally admitted to the prestigious Mage University, guaranteeing safety and security for her whole family. Until things go very wrong, and she somehow becomes magically linked to Grayson Stone, the school’s arrogant, annoyingly attractive, golden boy, putting not only her University acceptance, but also her and her family’s lives at risk.

Eloise and Grayson are given less than two weeks to solve an impossible mystery–one that will give the High Chancellor even more power and control—or face the consequences. Forced to room together, with all the same classes, while pretending to date to hide their secret quest, sparks definitely fly. As their feelings grow more real it becomes harder to live the lies they’ve had to tell to survive. With time running out, will they be able to trust the bond between them or will their lies tear them apart forever?

Alchemy of Souls is a thrilling adventure that has romance, suspense, and magic which makes every turn of the page more impossible to put down. The characters are fantastically matched with Eloise always rising to the occasion to do what is right while Grayson is the perfect blend of omission and challenge. He will do whatever is necessary to protect the people important to him and end his uncles corruption.
I was captivated by Eloise and Grayson, their romance blossoms through magic, understanding, and eventually trust in each other. They have quickly become one of my favorite book couples.
As an advance copy reader, I have read several of Adriana’s books and each one delights more than the last. I might even say that this is the best book yet by Adriana Mather.

Alchemy of Souls follows the characters of Eloise and Grayson as they attempt to understand the link they have to a mysterious key that only seems to appear in their presence. If you go into this book understanding that it is written for a young adult audience, it is an enjoyable read.

The magic system is interesting with students having specific talents that they attend university to master while a select few are deemed "gifted" due to being attuned to multiple types of magic. The characters are interesting if not a little less developed than I normally like; however, like I said, this is typical of a young adult novel so that is to be expected. I wish some of the characters (like Maggie, Adrien, and Akari) would have been present more in the book to allow for a deeper connection with them. They show up often enough to move the plot forward, but not enough to be truly meaningful outside of that. The developing romance between the main characters was sweet and fun to read at times, but doesn't go much beyond that in terms of depth which makes it a suitable romance for younger readers, but not enough for someone looking for something more.

The ending was predictable, but still had enough action that it was interesting to read. The first part of the book drug a bit, but picked up once the final conflict was set in motion. The resolution to the book was rushed and simplified, but (since I haven't said this enough) that's what makes it more suitable for a younger audience. The topics are complex enough for some teens, but still oversimplified at times.

Overall, I would recommend this to young adult readers with the caution that there is some more mature language at times that can take you by surprise. It does, however, have an interesting enemies to lovers trope with enough action to be engaging and interesting.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced digital copy of this book to review!

Review of ARC received by the author

I am currently in a reading slump right now because I feel like a lot of the newer books being published are severely lacking in that feeling I used to get when I was younger which is why I’ve been reading a lot of my old favorites trying to bring back that spark I once had. I certainly didn’t have to worry about that with Alchemy of Souls. (I never do with Adriana Mather’s books, though.)

The only “complaint” I have is that I want more! It has the classic foundation of a young adult novel with a unique storyline. So it healed a bit of that nostalgic void I can’t seem to fill lately while also providing a fresh new story that left me hoping for more to come.

I absolutely loved this book! I was immediately hooked from the start. The magic system is very unique, and I loved that Grayson and Eloise couldn't disclose their actions to anybody. It kept me on my toes, wondering if anyone was going to find out. I loved all the characters in this book, especially Grayson. He was the perfect MMC. This book is dual POV and has the fake dating trope in it. I highly recommend this read!

Alchemy of Souls was such a fun and unique world to dive into, blending our world with a magical one in beautiful detail! The characters were lovable and the tropes were to die for (I’m a sucker for the fake dating trope.) the side characters were lovable and meaningful, as well as the main two! Super fun book and I already want to reread it, especially in the autumn months!

This book made me feel so much. It’s such a beautiful story about two teens trying to solve the mystery of a key that formed the wards and divided society into levels.

Eloise is fierce, determined, hardworking, passionate, and intelligent. Grayson is funny, talented, and mysterious, carrying secrets of his own.

Forced to work together, they must uncover the truth behind the key while learning to trust each other in order to survive the Chancellor. But with trust comes unexpected emotions, and their partnership becomes something more than simple allies.

There are no large battles or excessive violence here. Instead, the story focuses on long-term strategy, hidden truths, and plans constantly changing with every new discovery.

The book feels light and fast-paced, with more emphasis on the emotional journey of the two main characters than action itself.

Overall, it’s a touching story that left me feeling warm and cozy.
Great book!

“Grabs me by the wrist, and drags me out of the shop. And I kind of enjoy her dragging me, which is exactly the problem”
Forced proximity and enemies to love(YA no spice just some kissing). Grayson and Eloise are the sweetest pair together. Grayson’s family has no love for him. All they care about is power. Eloise’s family is lower class and she’s determined to better her families lives by going to the magical academy. This unlikely pair will come together for hopefully the betterment of their world.
The magic system is wonderfully told. This was such a fun read and Adriana Mather is such an amazing author you can’t help but get lost in the world she creates. Thank you Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group and NetGalley for the arc!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read; it’s a high-stakes ride packed with sharp banter, explosive action, and several plot twists that genuinely caught me off guard. The dark academic setting provided the perfect backdrop for the story. Watching the leads transition from genuine animosity to a deep, heartwarming connection was easily the highlight, specifically Grayson, whose character growth and hidden depth made him a standout.
However, the female lead, Eloise, felt a bit underdeveloped by comparison. Despite a ticking clock and a dangerous mission, her priorities often leaned toward partying with friends, which made her feel slightly selfish and two dimensional. Even with that disconnect, the pacing and Grayson's arc make this a definite recommendation.

I am grateful to have received an arc of Alchemy of Souls from NetGalley.

Alchemy of Souls begins with our FMC, Eloise, wanting to be the first from her family of laborers to get into the “elusive” Mage university. She ultimately gets into the university, along with what seems to be every other student from her school. However, during her entrance exam events happen that lead to her having to work alongside Grayson, the MMC from an elite Mage family, to retrieve a special key for the Chancellor that only their connection can access.

Character wise, I was not a huge fan of Eloise. I felt like she had unnecessary animosity towards Grayson, in the beginning, and was more focused on trying to enjoy college with her best friend than focus on the task at hand. She was almost one dimensional to me. Whereas, Grayson was a more likable character. He was witty and charismatic and I found myself enjoying his POV more because he had more character depth and a stronger personal storyline.

I do have to say that there was a huge part of the book where I felt nothing really happened. It wasn’t until about 70% in when things started to come to light, truths were revealed, and the plot started to pick up. And by that point, the book was basically over. If this is meant to be a standalone, I don’t feel like the author did a strong job of giving us enough insight into the “Lawless” people and what the ultimate goal was for them.

And they were roommates...

Alchemy of Souls is a YA fantasy standalone featuring a dozen popular tropes like fake dating, forced proximity, and academic rivals. It can be a bit simplistic at times, so it leans on the younger side of YA, and it also caught me off guard in that it's not high fantasy but actually set in our world (with cellphones and Porsches). Still, I found it entertaining, and I think a younger me would've devoured it in a day.

Eloise Belrose comes from a family of Laborers, so her acceptance into University to become a Mage is quite unexpected. Grayson Stone, on the other hand, is the Chancellor's nephew, and despite his skill with magic, his entrance exam goes wrong...all thanks to Eloise. Eloise and Grayon's fates are intertwined when they're given two weeks to summon the Key to the Archives or face the consequences. They'll need to rely on each other and their magic if they want to uncover the Key before it's too late. The plot is fairly simple; Eloise and Grayson alternate between classes, secret mystery-solving sessions, and typical young adult activities like parties and hangouts with friends. The plot wasn't necessarily slow, but the extra scenes with parties and typical "teen" stuff bogged down the pacing at times. The twists were fairly predictable, but probably would've caught a younger me by surprise. Similarly, I think the ending was a bit convenient, and it's probably the reason I didn't rate this higher. The ending is still satisfying, though I wouldn't be surprised if this gets expanded into a series. It's definitely a fun read, but I don't know that I'm currently invested enough to continue if it gets more books.

I think the characters are going to be either loved or hated by most readers, and I don't think there'll be much in between. Eloise is one of those soft but stubborn YA FMCs; she cares about her family and justice, but she's also devoted to hating on Grayson every chance she can get. I found her a bit bland at times, just because she's very similar to a lot of other FMCs, but she wasn't intolerable, and I liked that she actually seemed to enjoy the schoolwork. Similarly, Grayson is your trademark MMC who speaks fluent sarcasm but has Dark Secrets and wants to protect everyone around him. I thought his motivations were a bit more complex and interesting than Eloise's, but he gave me the ick on a few occasions (was there a reason he had to drive a Porsche?). I didn't have any huge issues with the side characters, other than I wanted them to be more relevant and complex. Maggie - Eloise's best friend - deserved much better than being ignored for the sake of the plot, though I guess Grayson's friend, Bas, also got ignored a lot. Adrien and Naomi only exist to complicate the relationship between Eloise and Grayson, so they annoyed me a bit. Overall, I didn't mind any of the characters, but they could've used a bit more depth.

Alchemy of Souls is a YA fantasy taking place in a magical school, with similar vibes to Ava Reid's A Study in Drowning and Mara Rutherford's The Demonic Inventions of Aurelie Blake.

Recently, I was able to read an ARC of Alchemy Of Souls early as part of a book tour. Thank you to the author for this opportunity! When I say I couldn't put this book down once I started it, I mean it. Although, I've been fortunate to read all of Adriana's work to date, I was so excited when I heard this book is labeled as dark academia, fantasy, mystery, and romance involving elements of magic and drama.
.
Alchemy Of Souls by Adriana Mather, coming August 4th, 2026, revolves around two teens named Eloise, from a poor, laborer family, and Grayson, the rich, popular, "golden boy" everyone assumes is going to be "Gifted" like his uncle who is the respected and feared chancellor (by most, except the lawless). When the entrance exams for university go wrong, Eloise and Grayson become magically intertwined and are told they must call a magical key to a secret room, and FAST...or else!
.
Eloise and Grayson have known each other at school for years, but it's like they're from two separate worlds until their worlds literally collide and there's nothing they can do except to get through it...together. They are forced by the manipulative chancellor to not only work together, live together, and produce "the key" for the secret Archive Room on a deadline and with no time for mistakes.
.
Eloise and Grayson are complete opposites, always fighting, but throughout searching for answers about the archive key and fake dating to ward off problems from their friends, the two learn a lot about each others secrets and lives, too.
.
As Eloise and Grayson begin to trust each other, they learn that they have both experienced loss and grief and fears and they are both playing the game to protect themselves and their families. They also begin to realize that maybe they even care about and like each other, too. As the plot thickens, Eloise and Grayson work together to call the key before time runs out. They also realize that winners or survivors are not the strongest or the ones who have the most magic, the most money, or the most power, but rather those with survival instincts and the natural abilities to analyze and adapt quickly.
.
Alchemy Of Souls has everything from magic and spells, secrets and truths, action and thrill, enemies to lovers, witty humor and sarcasm, and genuine emotional depth and character growth. This is one of those books that once you pick it up and get sucked into it, you won't be able to stop reading! If you want to know the full drama between Eloise, Grayson, and their friends and family, and whether they find the key, survive, and save their families and friends, pre-order or pick up Adriana's book when it releases this summer!

I procrastinated writing this review because I despise writing negative reviews. And I suppose technically this review isn't all negative, but...well... let's just get into it.

I also want to take a moment to appreciate the absolutely GORGEOUS cover!!! I want to frame it and hang it on my wall.

Okay, into the review. The one positive thing I have to say about this was that the plot and magic system were well executed. The whole tension between the upper and lower classes, as well as with the Lawless felt tangible and realistic. Even though it was a bit predictable, I did love the plot (which I won't say too much about, to avoid spoilers). It was unique and entertaining, especially compared to other romantasy plots that feel so similar to each other. I also enjoyed the idea of the setting---modern day but also magic and cobblers and boarding school---except I found that it wasn't fleshed out or described enough. I feel like modern-day setting with a fantasy plot is a genius idea, I just needed it to be explained more.

The major drawback for me in this novel was the characters. Grayson and Eloise, along with the group of side characters felt so... meh. They felt completely two-dimensional to me, and had zero chemistry with each other. The way they spoke and acted felt so artificial to me---almost like they were pretending to play a part that they didn't really fit in. Grayson himself was probably my least favorite, because he honestly kinda gave me the creeps. The number of times he described Eloise's "naturally large eyes" was making me think that he had some sort of eyeball kink.

Based on the plot and the characters, I would want to recommend this to early YA readers (grades 7-10), but the characters used a lot of vulgar language that frankly, seemed out of place, so I would likely give this to grades 9 or older.

I want to make it clear that this was in no way a terrible book! The plot is FANTASTIC, and if you can handle the characters, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Alchemy of Souls is an absolutely fabulous action-packed, dark academia romantasy. Grayson is an extremely talented aspiring Mage who has spent years perfecting his magic. Eloise is determined to be granted acceptance to the University of Magical Arts where she can further develop her magical skills in order to help her family. During the entrance exams, Eloise's performance doesn't go according to plan, and she inadvertently connects her magic to Grayson's. Unfortunately for Grayson, being linked to Eloise means not only not being granted admittance to the Gifted program but also not being allowed his reign of the school. Grayson and Eloise are given two weeks to solve an impossible mystery. If they are unable to achieve the desired results, they will both be expelled - an outcome neither can live with, especially because Grayson has a much larger goal - one that could impact all of society.

I absolutely loved Alchemy of Souls! The story is unique and intriguing, which is a breath of fresh air when so many romantasy plots are so similar. Both Adriana Mather's world building and character development are fantastic. I really appreciated the focus on friendships; I especially enjoyed the friendship between Eloise and Maggie. Maggie is such an entertaining character. With that said, Grayson is easily my favorite character. His POV chapters were the best! The dialogue between all of the characters is excellent. The banter is so well written. In summary, Alchemy of Souls is an easy five stars and a definite recommended read!

I received an advance reader copy of Alchemy of Souls by Adriana Mather from Feiwel & Friends through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and found it to be a strong, imaginative read. The magical system in particular felt creative and well-conceived, adding depth and intrigue to the story. It was clear that care went into developing the mechanics of the world, and that originality was one of the highlights for me.

The characters were also enjoyable and easy to spend time with. I appreciated their dynamics and found myself invested in their journeys as the plot unfolded.

The writing style is straightforward and accessible rather than lyrical or poetic, which made it a quick read once I actually picked it up. At times, however, there were a few grammatical errors and moments where certain sentences felt slightly unclear or could have used more direct clarification. Since this was an ARC, I hope that some of those issues may be refined in the final version.

While I did have a few minor critiques, I had a genuinely good reading experience overall. I’m rating it 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4, and would recommend it to readers who enjoy creative magic systems and engaging fantasy with steady pacing.

Okay, I loved this book from the very beginning. It gripped me in immediately and I didn't want to put this down.

The story was captivating, learning about Eloise and what it's like to be a Laborer in the world of Mages. Gray is full of secrets but I loved the way he and Eloise start to trust one another and the relationship that starts to build. Their banter was funny and well written. I was glad it didn't stop at them either, Maggie is such an entertaining character. I loved Maggie and Eloise's friendship, it was supportive but also rightfully starting to teeter because Eloise was acting differently and Maggie wasn't allowed to be told why. It showed that real aspect of Eloise not watering her friendship during this time and it was starting to have affects.

✨Banter
✨Secrets
✨Romance
✨Supportive Friendship
✨LGBTQIA+ Representation
✨Dual PoV

I loved the Dual PoV of this story because it really gave us those thoughts and feelings of how Gray and Eloise felt about each other and the situation they were in. I think dual PoV was a great call here and was done with care to give us those insights, it made sense.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review

Cute and simple YA romantasy story that wraps up in a nice clean bow after teens save the day.

There's a lot of banter and anger/infatuation going on between Grayson and Eloise, which takes up a large part of the first half of the book.  If you're a fan of that then you will enjoy it, but if not then it's a bit of a slog.  World building is ok - a typical teen power fantasy with a schooling system that resembles a cross between Harry Potter, Divergent, and a YA version of Fourth Wing.

I am admittedly not a YA aged reader, but I think this book needed just a bit more.  The villain is just a big bad guy who is cartoonishly evil.  It doesn't really make sense that Laborers would put up with being so poor and mistreated in a society, and it would make sense for the line between Laborers and Lawless to be more blurred with people choosing to just leave.  I also hated the constant "scenting" of other characters by Grayson.  It feels like a lazy way of not having to do real scene and character building if one protagonist can just smell what someone is feeling instead of actually figuring it out.

I think this is Adriana Mather's best novel yet! A YA Romantacy set in a world very much like our own, but with magic, Alchemy of Souls follows Eloise Belrose and Grayson Stone as they race against time to produce a magical key that could be their salvation or their destruction.

Our main characters have fantastic chemistry and the tension was palpable. Even when they didn't like each other you could feel the undercurrent of it. It made for some great moments of sparing or banter! If fake dating and enemies to lovers are your tropes, you'll love this!

This is YA so it's fairly PG. Which, honestly, is how I prefer my book romances anyway.

The plot kept things moving and the pacing was on point. I would have loved a deeper dive on the magic system because it was a cool concept, but there is enough for you to envision the world. There is realistic character growth and even the side characters feel fully fleshed out. There is definitely some political intrigue and commentary on class in the story, and I appreciated that the storyline had some weight to it.

Overall, an easy, enjoyable read that was a lot of fun!

Alchemy of Souls is a mesmerizing fantasy that mixes magic, mystery, and heart in just the right proportions.

Adriana Mather crafts a world that feels both vivid and layered, where every spell, secret, and revelation carries real weight. The magic is imaginative and integral to the story, not just window dressing, and it fuels both the plot and the characters’ growth.

The heroine is compelling—smart, courageous, and flawed in ways that make her journey relatable and gripping. The supporting cast is equally engaging, with alliances, betrayals, and unexpected connections that keep the story moving and the stakes high.

What truly shines is the emotional depth. Amid the magical intrigue, Mather explores themes of identity, choice, and the cost of power, making the story resonate long after the last page.

If you love immersive fantasy with strong characters, intricate worldbuilding, and a touch of suspense, Alchemy of Souls is a spellbinding read that will pull you in and refuse to let go.

this book was so cute! like a cozy, fantastical, YA-coded hug.

the enemies to lovers relationship between Grayson and Eloise is by far the best part — their dynamic is exhilarating, well-developed, and believable. their romance is very much the focus of the book, but more sweet than anything else (zero spice), so I’d say the YA label fits well here. the world-building is also easy to follow and cleverly executed.

but the detailed character development we see for Eloise and Grayson falls off when it comes to the side characters, of which there are a ton! nearly all read as one-dimensional; almost as if they are only there to advance a certain plot point for the MCs.

another thing that isn’t very clear is whether this is the first part in a series or a standalone…honestly really hoping it’s the former and not the latter, as there are way too many storylines left unresolved at the end.

a strong 4.5 stars, rounded up!

A fast read but, ultimately, not one I thought stood out. I think perhaps I was not the targeted age group and might have enjoyed it more when I was in my teens so I bumped it up half a star for that.

My main complaint is how cartoonishly evil the villain is and how stupidly the main characters acted at times. The term fake dating was used about one hundred times and it was overdone for something that seemed only plot important in passing.

The world and plot had intriguing hints of combining "the real world" and a magical one and defining what creates a rebellion in such a world but ultimately ignores it to focus on the villain's cartoonish evil.

I did have much higher hopes for this book because I enjoyed Killing November from the same author and I wonder if that hurt its star rating as well for me. Also loved the cover and it didn't feel like it aligned with the text either. Will give this author another try.

Just like every other book Adriana has written, I was sucked in from the very beginning. I have truly loved every single one of her books, and each one has only gotten better. I remember when I saw that Alchemy of Souls was in the works, I was so excited that I didn’t want to read any of the descriptions or reviews, I just wanted to wait until I could read the book… That is how much I love Adriana’s writing.

Alchemy of Souls is the perfect combination of mystery, magic, and love.. of all kinds. Eloise’s story is inspiring, someone who has the odds against her but still pushes through. And Grayson, his story inspiring in another way.. choosing to use his power for the good of all the people. I love the way this story comes together. Feel good in all the right places, but also keeps you on the edge of your seat because you want to know what happens next! I hope there is more to Eloise and Grayson’s story!

Alchemy of Souls follows Eloise and Grayson in this dynamic where they’re forced together to uncover a mystery.
There’s forced proximity, rivals to lovers, academia. I would not say this is “dark” academia by any means, but rather a YA fantasy romance in an academia setting.
I thought the romance depicts how it feels to be young and developing a crush where you have those butterflies, and you’re hyper aware of every movement around that person. This was PRECIOUS and perfectly depicts this feeling, gives you the warm and fuzzies.
I am also such a sucker for some emotion based magic, loved that it was so prevalent in the story.
Some moments are predictable, and there are some predictable tropes, but it doesn’t make it any less fun. This whole book was just a fun time where you’re along for the ride.
I recommend this for sure.

was drawn to the book by its beautiful cover and was not disappointed; the entire book read well both in terms of the story and writing, especially the elements of the first half which were the most interesting and entertaining specifically with the set up of the conflict and establishing the nature of the forced proximity between both MCs. the beginnings of fantasy books can be overwhelming for me because of the exhaustive nature of world building and the attention it demands but i didn’t feel disoriented or fatigued at any part. other than some questionable textbook-YA style dialogue choices, both MCs are likable with a generous amount of depth for a young adult novel (which is more than i wouldve expected but am pleasantly surprised with)

I absolutely love Alchemy of Souls by Adriana Mather!!!
This book pulled me in with it's magical school setting where everyone has their own elemental power, but what really made it special was the deeper message behind it.

two characters are forced to work together to find a missing key using magic- something neither of them can do alone. At first ,they can't stand each other, and the tension is real...but watching that slowly turn into trust, understanding, and eventually love was so beautifully done.

it's more than just a fantasy story-it's about connection, balance, and realizing that sometimes the very person you resist is the one you need the most. The mix of elemental magic, emotional growth and romance made this such a powerful and unforgettable read. Definitely one of my favorites!

Usually I can tell in the first few lines of a book if I will like it or not. As I began reading Alchemy of Souls, I knew this would be a good one. If you read the works of Adriana Mather, you'll know that she writes a wide variety of subjects. She makes that transition from book to book seamless. If you love all things magic, you'll love Alchemy of Souls! It seems there is a protagonist, and an antagonist. But is there? And are the characters who they seem to be? This is a fast-paced book, which I love, because there's never a dull moment. This book has it all: Magic, action, love, suspense..you name it, this one has it. For a quick, suspenseful, entertaining read..I recommend picking up a copy of this book. It's another good one from Adriana Mather!

Alchemy of Souls is easily one of Adriana Mather’s strongest novels yet. The story is incredibly well paced, with a narrative that flows so smoothly there’s never a moment where it drags or loses momentum. From the very first page, I was completely captivated. The character development is especially impressive. Each character feels layered and purposeful. Beyond the magic, I felt there was a striking parallel between the magical community and our own world, particularly in its reflection of the divide between the rich and the poor. That added depth made the story feel both immersive and relevant. An unforgettable, powerful read from start to finish.
