3.5 I'm always hooked when a magic system is different then the standard Celtic ones, so I was very excited to see that this one was Slavic in origin! I also saw the house looking like Baba Yaga, so I immediately became interested. This story follows Edelweiss Birch, who is summoned to the town that her mother is from after receiving a mysterious letter from her grandmother stating that she has inherited her house. Surprise, the house is magical! Turns out Edelwiess is from a long line of witches, and her family is famous in this town. Edelweiss has to spend the summer trying to learn how to be a "proper witch" and get her own life together. This plot was interesting, but some character interactions felt slightly off to me. I'm not sure how I feel about the relationship between Edelwiess and Leander. It felt like a lot of miscommunication, and a lot of blame was put on Edelweiss when it wasn't purely her fault. I did like the parts of the plot that spoke to generational trauma and how it can affect a family multiple generations down a line. The art was super fun, and I really enjoyed the style. The character designs were also great!

3.5 stars! A dark fantasy graphic novel steeped in folklore that explores generational trauma and breaking the cycle. The art style was perfect for the story and really added to the grittiness of it. I really loved the goblin creatures in this. I’ve never seen them depicted like they were in this novel. It was refreshing. I really enjoyed the small town setting and the sense of community it had. The story was quick and never felt like it was meandering too long. I really loved the house as a character and how it grieved just like the family who lived in it. This story is definitely dark. I am grateful that the author provided trigger warnings at the beginning. Trigger warnings include: suicide, domestic abuse, and depression.

This was a 5⭐ for me! Magic and spooky vibes! I wouldn't say this is full on horror but it leans into it. Edie is an interesting character and it's fun finding out the story with her. There is a bit of miscommunication but not too much. I loved the art and the Baba Yaga influence.
I will be posting a video review of this book on my TikTok as well @simonsayshellooo
Thank you Netgalley for providing this book! The opinions are my own.
This book was such a beautiful mix of self-discovery, magic, and emotional depth. At its heart, it’s about a young woman who inherits a house she never expected, only to uncover long-buried family secrets and the truth of her own identity as a witch.
The illustrations flowed perfectly with the story and truly allowed us to dig into the full narrative of both past and present.
I thought this was a cute story. It gave you everything you would want. Personal growth and friendship growth. Along with family and generational growth. I think teens will be able to relate to this, and I understood it on my level. All in all a sweet story.
