INVESTIGATORS: WEATHER OR NOT is an engaging and silly middle grade graphic novel with a fun mystery and plenty of funny moments. Mango and Brash have a new case to solve - who is replacing the water with milk? They face off against Daryl, locate the missing agent (InvestiGatos), and encounter mad scientists along the way.

What I loved: This is a highly entertaining and action-packed new InvestiGators story. The misunderstandings and puns will keep young readers laughing. There are so many clever jokes that play on language and grammar that also improve reading skills. Another fun thing about this series is that some of the jokes are made for adult caregivers who read along with young ones. They may go over kids' heads but will keep adults entertained as well.

The case feels relatively low stakes and adds to the humor along the way with plenty of twists and surprises as they figure out who is behind it. Mango and Brash may not always be the most effective detectives but they get the job done. The new InvestiGatos added a lot of fun to the story with their own flair for solving cases and tackling problems.

The artwork throughout is fantastic with loads of fun characters, easy-to-follow panels, and lots of color. The level of detail works perfectly to set and capture each scene. The dialogue is easy to attribute and follow without taking over the story. Expressive characters and colors set up all the comedy nicely.

Final verdict: INVESTIGATORS: WEATHER OR NOT is a highly entertaining and action-packed graphic novel that young readers will love laughing their way through! Highly recommend for the middle grade audience.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

We really enjoyed The InvestiGators: Weather or Not! The students were highly engaged and laughed throughout the book. This installment introduced many new characters, and one standout moment for us was when Doctor Copter turned into a helicopter—with the wedgie—which had everyone cracking up.

We also loved seeing Daryl return. He’s always turning into something different, and the students look forward to seeing what he’ll become next. It was especially interesting to see him try to redeem himself in this book, and we appreciated the addition of a new villain instead of focusing only on Daryl.

Another highlight was the integration of retired superheroes and the return of familiar characters from previous books. The students were excited to recognize and remember so much from earlier stories, which really shows how strong the series continuity is.

As a teacher, I especially appreciated the rich wordplay throughout the book. The use of idioms, puns, and multiple-meaning words adds an extra layer of fun and learning. The detailed illustrations also stood out—students enjoyed noticing the small, specific details in the pictures.

Overall, we love that this is a series that keeps students wanting more. Each book ends with a cliffhanger, making us excited to jump into the next adventure! I will definitely be ordering a copy for my classroom and recommending that our library purchase a copy.

Follow Mango and Brash on this MOO-sterious milk disaster. It’s waaay too hot in the winter ans fire hydrants have been filled with cow milk! Can they solve this case and end in udderly sunshine?!

Chief made a mixed up in texting the InvestiGators and accidentally texted the InvestiGatoS, so we get the pleasure of extra help and cats. Will it be Cat-astrophic or Purr-fect?

My 9 year reads at a high school level and reads Eragon, Lord of the Rings, Sanderson novels, but he will gladly read every InvestiGators novel that comes his way. He loves Mango and Brash and their adventures. His favorite part of this book: he loves that this one is about climate change and has an underlying message.

Mom/teacher review: I love all the puns and the little Easter Eggs. The firehouse is #451, and a reference to Fahrenheit 451. There’s also Willy Wonka adding chocolate to the milk fountain with a guest appearance of Luke Skywalker. And the science mom loves the climate change aspect and little science facts: bananas being radioactive. And all the vocabulary-even with the puns. This is an easy recommendation for students of all ages.

Book Club Recs:
Food: cookies
Drinks: milk (duh)

[Read as an advanced copy from NetGalley] “Oh the humanity” …and the alligators, crocodiles, gatos, primates, and a were-helicopter (yes, you read that correctly). Weather or Not is the ninth installment in John Patrick Green’s InvestiGators series – a series about special agent alligators … in vests. Now, some may say that it’s a good children’s comic, a nice read-alike for fans of Dog Man, but I would argue that it should be read by kids and adults alike. Because, let’s face it, kids are not going to get half the puns, wordplay, or easter eggs that Green sprinkles liberally through his works (and by liberally, I mean ‘comprises at least 75% of the text’). Is it silly? Yes. Are there puns? So many! Do they break the fourth wall? You bet. Should I read it? Yes! But start with the first book in the series as there are several reoccurring characters and references to previous books that may cause confusion if you are unfamiliar with the backstory. So, if you like Dog Man, or The Bad Guys, or even the old Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle show this series is for you. 4/5 stars – This is good! I will probably read it again and may buy the series. I definitely recommend this title.

Mango and Brash are back for their 9th adventure and my 9 year old was SO excited for another InvestiGators story. These graphic novels are silly yet engaging and always include a mystery to solve and plenty of humor! In this story, Mango and Brash have to figure out who is putting milk in the town water lines. This book introduced a few new characters to the universe but my son pointed out many returning characters as well.

The book is full of puns, easter eggs from other books, and really creative illustrations. We think that you do need to read the previous books before picking this one up and based on the ending, my son is sure we are going to get a book 10 in the future. If your kiddo is a fan of DogMan, Cat Kid, and/or Bad Guys, they will definitely like this book!

If you can’t get enough of Mango and Brash in the books, we also recommend you check out their youtube channel 😊

Thank you Netgalley and First Second Books for an advanced copy of this book to read and review!

Mango and Brash return to action in INVESTIGATORS: WEATHER OR NOT, investigating why the city is sweltering in February and what or who is behind the city’s water supply turning into milk. Once again, one liners and clever puns carry the story to a satisfying conclusion, but not without some mishaps along the way.

Readers will be delighted to revisit the familiar cast of characters, including Brash’s former partner Daryl, and meet a few newbies, like Los InvestiGatos, a pair of Spanish speaking feline agents. While the trademark action and humor along with the bold, colorful illustration that serve as hallmarks of the series continue here, the story also incorporates a message about the impact of climate change in way that is accessible to the target audience. With the cliffhanger ending, readers will be eagerly awaiting the next book. I know that my school's readers can't wait for this one to hit our shelves when we return to school in August!

Mango and Brash are back solving the case of milk in the water lines. In efforts to find out who is stealing replacing water with milk, they also run into their nemesis Daryl. Will he help or get in the way?

This quirky book will make you laugh, shake your head and do some Googling. Fans of Dog Man, Cat Kid and Bad Guys will enjoy this book series. It helps to have read some prior books of the series before this one, but you can pick up pretty quickly.

My family enjoyed the puns and jokes, but there were a few that were a bit adult in my opinion (they did go over the kiddos head). The addition of the Gatos (cats) who speak Spanish was a hit in my house. My elementary schooler loves practicing their Spanish and this was a great opportunity. There were a few places we did research because we were not sure if the facts were fact-ing.

If the sky is green and the water tastes like milk, you call the InvestiGators. 🐊🥛🌧️

I had so much fun reading InvestiGators: Weather or Not by John Patrick Green. This series somehow gets sillier and smarter with every book, and this one had me laughing from start to finish. Mango and Brash are back solving another chaotic mystery, complete with monkey-scientists, weird weather, and an absolutely ridiculous dairy disaster. The jokes land perfectly for kids, but honestly, I was cracking up, too. The bright comic panels, nonstop action, and clever teamwork make this such an easy graphic novel to binge in one sitting. If your reader loves fast-paced humor like Dog Man, this series is definitely worth picking up.

✨️Thank you, Storygram Kids, Mac Kids Books, and John Patrick Green, for sharing InvestiGators: Weather or Not with me!

My tween is a big fan of the series and raced through this book, giggling along the way. The illustrations are fun and bright as always and the plot and interactions are written in the perfect way to have young readers engaged and laughing.

My tween's review: The InvestiGators: Weather or Not is a super fun and silly book. It is abohy two alligators that sovle mystery and in this book they meet mad scientists, alligators out of daffodils and many more funny characters. I really liked it!

My almost 9 year old devoured this book, only stopping to laugh (there are so many puns and kid-appropriate jokes). He's already asked if he can get a copy of this book once it’s published!

I think this book (and series) is a great way to get kids interested into reading! I’d say this is perfect for kids who enjoy the DogMan and Captain Underpants series. The illustrations are bright and cheerful (and I appreciate that the gators are different colors so you can keep track of who is who). The text is easy to read and there’s just enough on each page to not feel overwhelming to younger readers.

And even with this being the 10th InvestiGators book, your kid should have no problem jumping right in!

I absolutely adore this series! It is fun, engaging, and filled with wordplay. The pacing of this book is perfect for the target audience and no pages are wasted - everything works toward solving the mystery. It was nice to see characters from previous books back here and I really liked the evolution of the character of Daryl (including his reconciliation with Mango and Brash). This book helps to explain the impacts of climate change, but in a way younger readers can understand. Overall, this was another great addition to the series!

Requested a digital review copy of this book for my 11-year-old, who loves graphic novels and is thrilled to get to read them early and provide feedback. Here are his thoughts:

I like that they continued the original series more because they've been coming out with a lot of the Agents of SUIT books, and it's nice to see that they're going back to the original characters. Mango and Brash, like usual, are hilarious. This book is just as good as the earlier books in the series (I would give them all five stars!).

I would recommend this book to people who like the original Investigators series and the Agents of SUIT. If you like funny graphic novels, this is a very good pick for you.

My nine year old son loves the InvestiGators series and he was so excited to get to read InvestiGators: Weather or Not with me.

Milk has somehow overtaken the water supply and it’s up to the InvestiGators to solve the problem.

We loved the characters Mango and Brash and the InvestiGatos. The story made us laugh quite a few times with the jokes and puns. The illustrations are well done and colorful. My son said it was definitely a book he would read over and over so I’m sure we’ll be buying a copy once it is published.

Thank you First Second Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley.

This is the first of the many gator books yet I finished in one sitting, it was very much a book I looked very forward to reading as it continued the story since the 2024 book class action. I gotta say the coloring seems to be even better in this iteration, its very vibrant and eye catching. Kudos to them. I really enjoyed how Brash and Mango got a lot of closure from their past experiences later on into the book with a certain someone and how now the story has changed in a fun and new direction. I hope the world building of the gang keeps going and look forward to the next adventures for these pals. I expect even better going forward.

In the typical style of the Investigators, this book was funny and enjoyable to read. My children really enjoyed the return of Daryl and his Flower power turned snow man. The addition of the InvestiGatos was a fun twist, but reading the Spanish words was a challenge I was not prepared for. We loved that there was inclusion in this story, but it would have been very nice if the Spanish was translated in the footnotes like the acronyms are. As a non-Spanish speaker, I felt like I was missing out on some of this story.

Climate change is making a scientist mad and Brash and Mango need to stop his madness. Milk is coming out of the faucets instead of water. What's causing such a strange occurrance? Due to a mixup the investigators team up with the investigatos, cats. The four have their work cut out for them with crazy stuff happening all around...like horrible heat in February. Plus there's a blimp, a return of a nuclear waste friend and plenty of wry humor to enjoy.

I read this with my 9 year old and she absolutely loved it! It made bedtime that much harder because she didn’t want to stop reading it! We’ve read a few of these books and they’ve all been fun. We have a lot of making up to do!

I wish I could’ve have read this with her on my kindle colorsoft. But the Netgalley shelf app on my iPad was good too!

My students love these books. I decided to read one to see what they’re all about. This is book #10 in the series, but I could still follow it without too much trouble. The illustrations are perfect and help move the story along. There’s just the right amount of dialogue on each page. What makes these books so popular is that they’re super funny! I was laughing out loud during some of it. I also like all the puns and play on words. I appreciate that the two alligators are different colors so you can tell who’s who. Even the names of the people are a play on words (the reporter is Cici Boringstories.) Just a fun lighthearted read.

Thank you NetGalley for the preview. All opinions are my own.
