This character is on her vigilante shit.
And I am here for it.

The author (Rhiannon Rollness, who has hair as beautiful as the moon beams) kicks this off this a bang and we are plopped right into the middle of the action. The themes of justice, revenge, hope, sisterhood, f**k the patriarchy are strong and if your heart isn’t racing while you’re reading this then you best get your booty to a cardiologist because C’MON!!

As the story unfolds, it takes us places we didn’t expect and THE FLABBER I GHASTED when I realized the thing and about the person from that town!!

Story: Infinity 🌟
Spice: 🌶.🫑 (1.5)

Ive found a treasure and now I must do the lords work and share this beautiful masterpiece with every single fucking human I interact with, literally I hope people start referring to me as "That's the Black and Blue Widow chick" IDGAF. JUST SHUT UP AND READ THIS BOOK!

Are you a fan of the Stark sisters in GoT? Did you love Gladiator 1&2?! Do you love a protective FMC who is seeking vigilante justice in the name of abused women and children. Never knew about Tisiphone until this book and it makes me wonder why on earth there isn't more. Avenger of Murder. "Voice of Revenge" ....I guess I shouldn't be shocked that one of my favorite movies is The Brave One.

This book follows two different women (Rose and Luella). Both stories are full of excitement, heartbreak, and hope. Luella is the primary focus starting out because she is the black widow, she personally marries and murders her husbands by using her handy dandy shapeshifting magic to continually reinvent herself. I truly did not see the moment the story shifts coming...I was absolutely astounded at how well executed it was. This book should be read by every woman in existence. Down with the men. I hope they choke on their own dicks.

This would make an absolutely PHENOMENAL book club pick as it's a standalone with powerful themes.

Trigger warnings should definitely be checked, though, due to an abundance of violence, rape, murder, abuse throughout the story.

Sure, the latin language is heavy, but there is a glossary provided (I didn't know about it and still have this in my top 3 reads of 2024)

I was honestly pretty surprised with this book. After reading the first 100 pages, I wasn’t sure I was going to finish reading it. The writing style was pretty confusing, the lack of world building and character development didn’t make me feel compelled to finish reading. I’m glad that I stuck with it because the story really started to pick up halfway, and I found myself fully invested after. You don’t begin to actually understand the characters until this point in the book. The way the FMC was written was beautiful, and the way her story was told, although you had to work for it, was well worth it.

One thing that was pretty jarring, however, was the names of some of the prominent female characters. The story is set in ancient Rome, and I’m not sure if the names Rose, Daisy or Luella originate from that time period or geopolitical location. I also would have liked to see the magic system explored a little more. All criticisms aside, I truly enjoyed this read.

I was fortunate to receive and ARC and absolutely loved every minute of it. I couldn’t put it down, finished in one rainy day. It was interesting, smart, entwined in all the right ways and truly wicked fun. There are a lot of abuse scenes, so a word to anyone triggered, but the author does a great job of including all possible trigger warnings. Loved the dual POV and twists!!!

Thank you to Rhiannon Rollness for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a beautifully written story. I loved the dual POV and the twists and turns of this plot. Luella, one of our FMCs, was in her revenge era, and I was there for it.

This book does contain a glossary (one of my new favorite things) to help with the heavy use of Roman terms.

Please read the trigger warnings as this does contain dark themes and adult content.

The way the plot lines interweave is incredible. It took me a moment to get my bearings on where I was, but once I did I was in for a great ride.
Without spoiling, I started to guess the twists around the 65% mark which is right before they start to be revealed. You are given just enough information throughout the book that once enough piles on you have the Joey / Rachel moment from friends pointing at each other "you know!!!" Right when you are supposed to. It was really well done!

I do love a vengeful woman story, Luella is the perfect FMC in the sense that not only is she hard and tough, but you have moments where she struggles and cries. She is an extremely well rounded FMC.

And our dear Cassius... Swoon. "Do you know that I can hardly breathe when you leave my sight? That our plans mean nothing to me if they risk you?”

Black and Blue Widow is a captivating tale set in a world reminiscent of ancient Rome. Now, everyone knows serial is my thing, and Ancient Rome, having a female serial unaliver, intrigued me so much that I could not pass on the opportunity to read this book.

We follow two women: Luella Amulius and Rose Octavius.

Luella is a complex character who seeks out the most reprehensible men in the republic. Her actions are driven by a desire for justice, and as the story progresses, we witness her grappling with trust and vulnerability, especially when she encounters Cassius, the Emperor's brother.

On the other hand, Rose is a young woman desperate to escape her abusive father. In her quest for safety, she naively accepts a marriage proposal, hoping it will provide her with the security she craves. However, Rose soon realizes that marriage may not be the sanctuary she envisioned and how easily one can go from one dreadful situation to the next. Throughout her journey, Rose evolves from a gullible girl into a woman who understands the complexities of trust and self-reliance.

Rollness masterfully intertwines these two narratives, highlighting themes of feminine strength, justice, and the search for autonomy in a patriarchal society. The character development is profound, with both Luella and Rose confronting their fears and redefining their identities. The reveal at the end, WOW. I knew something was coming, but I didn't expect anything quite that twisted.

In conclusion, a powerful debut that explores the resilience and determination of women in the face of adversity and a testament to the strength and complexity of the female spirit. Gild meets Dexter is a pretty accurate description in this case.

‼️This book delves into dark themes, including violence and abuse. So please check out trigger warnings.

71 chapters (very short ones), 383 pages
Bingeable
Intense
Daring
2 parallel stories.
2 POVS
2 women. Luella & Rose.
The stories intertwine.

-> Good topic choice
-> Heavily emotional (constant feel of anxiety & anticipation)
-> Some of the themes might be hard to get into
-> Good editing (this is important, after DNF-ing a few poorly edited books)
-> The chapters are both numbered & named

A fantastic debut.

This is yet another book that will be stuck in my mind.

This felt like my kind of book. Although I couldn't help but wonder, how would it be in modern times and without magic?

Luella is a feminist baddie—a shapeshifter. The book begins with a bang of incrimination. It keeps you hooked from the first page. She deceives and tricks (but not without reason).

One of them seeks out notoriously evil men in the realm, who abuse women, to kill them after marrying them. She creates violent scenes as if after a physical argument, paints herself the victim, to avoid questions and guilt.

The other woman, to avoid being sent to a brothel and to do sex work, agrees to a marriage. Not to the one she desires. However, she will learn that safety is relative and that marriage is no guarantee of anything.

So there's female rage. Disrespect. Budding romance. Cat & mouse. Superiority & abuse.

It's intriguing to me how one can go from light to dark, and write all these dark things about men, then have an understanding of a woman who kills for the lore of doing it for the women, feels suffering, yet has no qualms when it comes to murder.

I think Luella is a very interesting, multidimensional character.

I can't believe that not many people have read this yet. I mean, the cover is gorgeous. Perhaps it's the feminism trope? (Not that that's a bad thing.)

This book had me freaking out about Luella getting caught, even though I know that wasn't the point. When the cat caught the mouse at one point in the book, I calmed down a bit.

In Rose's POV, there are Remus & Romulus, the legendary founders of Rome, so I like that there's that lore. The setting is of ancient Rome; however, there wasn't much world-building besides that.

The way the story begins... it keeps you on edge for the remainder of it.

Point missing: Luella's voice -> does she change it? (voice recognition)

Also, Rose, Daisy, Luella, and Skylar are all very pretty names; however, they do not match the setting of the fictitious ancient Roman empire.

The end chapters, with the twists and turns, beginning at around 75%, were delightful. (I had a hunch, the way the stories would intertwine, and about who the characters are, but I also had doubts).

Quotes:

The Senate is willing to suspend its usual moral high ground if it means the populace is too drunk to care what they do. Or, more typically, don’t do.

And when he finally does what his pater did to his mater, and his grandpater to his grandmater, and what any number of men have done to women since gods first walked the realm… That’s where I finally come in.

The Sabines.
It’s not a brothel in the traditional way. The women don’t work here for coin. They’re owned by the domus. No freedom, no money, no familia.
Slaves.

They are, naturally, scantily clad and look horrified by either the wine or the second source of water spurting from his phallus.
- at least the author names it properly.

📖: Black and Blue Widow

“𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘤𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘶𝘮.”

In Black and Blue Widow, we are transported to an empire where women are property and expected to be obedient without question.

The story focuses on two very different women.
Blessed by Janus, Luella has honed her abilities to avenge the women at the mercy of cruel men. Luring her victims into marriage, she emerges a widow each time.

Rose is desperate to escape her volatile father and save her sister from more harm. She hopes to find love and she accepts marriage early. But is this the savior she’s hoped for? One thing is certain, marriage changes them both forever.

Tropes:
👀 Dual POV
🖕🏻 F*ck the patriarchy
🐈‍⬛ Black cat/Golden Retriever
🔥 Feminine rage
❤️‍🩹 I can fix her
🏛️ Roman mythology
🤝 Female friendships
✅ Green flag man

I adore our green flag man and how he truly sees Luella and all that she can be. Luella and Rose are both so passionate about pursuing their different goals. Luella has spun a dangerous web of deceits and carefully laid traps. She is willing to risk it all to exact vengeance on behalf of all the helpless and for all she’s endured and what she’s lost. The story also explores the deep bonds Luella forms with Mia and women she’s crossed paths with in her mission.

Black and Blue Widow is an emotional, sweeping tale of revenge, feminine rage, and new beginnings.

There are dark themes and sensitive subjects throughout the book and I recommend reviewing the author’s TW/CW.

Thanks to the author for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review

Applause!!! I would give this book all the stars if I could!! I was sucked into this story from the very beginning. The synopsis had me intrigued, there’s nothing I love more than a stabby FMC who is out to dismantle the patriarchy.

This imaginary world is inspired by Roman and Greek mythology but is its own story and world. I loved all the touches of mythology with the gods and goddesses but the tweaks of them further enriched the story.

I really enjoyed the dual POV and the differing personalities of each provided insight of the world through both naive and seasoned eyes. I also loved the aspect of sisterhood depicted through both points of view. There’s the sisters by blood and by choice, both relationships are beautiful.

Although the love story isn’t the main plot, I loved the chemistry between the two of them!! The love interest made my heart flutter and I blushed a little bit!!

Thank you, Rhiannon, for the ARC of this book! I’m excited to see what you do next!!

This book was wow. A female serial killer? Count me in.

The premises feels amazing and unique. It is going around a heavy topic (so definitely check the trigger warnings before reading). The story is beautiful, multi layerd, brutal story that handles important topics suchs as vigilante justice and feminine rage as well as safe unconditional love. It was intens but truly worth everything. In this book we follow two female characters. One is our serieal killer Luella, who is strong and holds justice in her hands. The other one is Rose, a younger girl, marrying to escape her father's abuse, but finding herself in a different situation than she had planned. She is naive and sweet as were luella seems strong and harsh. The way the character develop and we get their stories is just incredible. And if I must say the plot twist... oh my, i Absolutely should have seen that coming but i did not. It surprised me for sure!

My only mark is that some parts felt a bit confusing and rushed, but not in a way that it messed with the story or my expectations so its just a minor thing i though about!

Cant wait to read more of this authors work!

Also want to thank the author for an advanced reader copy. All thoughts are my own.

What can I say, I enjoy a good female rage revenge story. There are places in the story that I think could be developed better, but over all I think this book was really enjoyable and well written for a debut.

I really enjoyed the setting and the fantasy elements, although I wished they were expanded upon and explored better. Maybe they will be in another book?

I learnt the true meaning of hope by reading this book. At times, the story terrified me. This story is so powerful. It isn't easy to read and I'm sure it would have been so difficult for the author to write too.

The writing is impeccable. Things aren't handed out straight away. Information about the world is peeled back layer after layer, which is the best form of writing in my opinion. It creates intrigue and also says that the author trusts the readers.

🌹 Feminine Rage
🤍 Revenge + Redemption
🌹 A Cruel Patriarchal Society
🤍 Romance + Fantasy
🌹 Found Family

This was such an intense read! I would definitely advise other readers to check their Trigger Warnings and proceed with caution. This one gets heavy.

Luella is on the hunt. She is determined to make her world a better place by removing the men who hurt and abuse women and children. Using magic to change her appearance, she becomes the object of their desire, just to cut them down on the wedding night and show them the same mercy they have shown to their victims.

Through a mix of heavy-handed foreshadowing and simmering rage, Rhiannon Rollness weaves a story that blends a stark anti-patriarchy message with romance and fantasy. I would've liked to see more healing, I think, for characters who experience unspeakable trauma, and at times, the shock factor was a little too heavy-handed for me. I did predict some of the plot developments coming, and the ending felt a bit hasty through our FMC's healing, but I do feel that the heavy foreshadowing added to the emotional impact of the story.

Overall, this was an intense story that delivers Feminine Rage really well.

In a world inspired by Ancient Rome, Luella is severely pissed off. She witnesses first hand how terribly women and young girls are treated in this patriarchal society. She takes it upon herself to mete out vigilante justice, that is until she meets a victim who sees her for exactly who she is.

I was waiting for the connection to be made between both stories and when it happened, it DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Rollness weaves a story of two women from different strata of society both fighting their way through a society that aims to keep them subjected.

Highly recommend!!!

ARC Review

When I read the blurb of this book, it instantly caught my attention.
There's nothing I love more than a female serial killer.

I loved our mysterious FMC, Luella. She was such a strong character who just wanted to be rid of the predators of this world. And I loved how she went about it.
I loved Luella and Mia's friendship but wish we got more from them.

Rose, 2nd FMC,was sweet but very naive. She had such a hard life but still remained warm and bubbly.

I loved the swop between chapters as we got to know each of them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found this a very confusing read. I felt as is if I missed a previous book or I was thrown into the middle of a book.
Unfortunately not all words, Latin or author-made, were in the glossary. I was playing a guessing game for their meaning.
The use of Latin words and others were way to overused. It made it hard to read as I had to constantly be checking up the meaning.
This was going to be a 3 ⭐ read for me, until the author threw in the most amazing plot twist. As someone who normally guesses plot twist, I was surprised! Shocked! Astounded!
Amazed! Just WOW 🤩
In conclusion, I wish we got more of Luella and Cassius romance.
Thank you to the author for gifting me this ARC.
5 Stars!!! Honestly deserves more than 5 stars.
Wow, this book blew me away!! The way this book was written, the characters, the plot twists, all of it had me completely captivated. I went through so many different emotions while reading this! I loved the FMC Luella, she was such a bad*ss! I loved reading her pov. The other FMC Rose, I felt so bad for her. She was dealt a terrible hand in life but was just trying to survive. I loved reading about these two and seeing how they connected. The plot twists in this book was awesome, I love when I think I know what's going to happen and I'm completely wrong! My only complaint is I need more. I didn't want it to end. This book took me on a ride and I enjoyed the heck out of it!
Please read this book. You won't regret it.
Thank you so much for letting me read an ARC!!
Rhiannon Rollness is a mastermind. From the very first line she hooked me into a narrative that had me rooting for rage, revenge and shockingly, love. The way she wove together the stories is nothing short of genius. As the threads began to overlap, the tension skyrocketed—like Luella and Rose, I never knew which man to trust. Just when I thought I had it figured out, she pulled the rug out from under me.
This book took me through every possible emotion. I was devastated, torn between hate and hope, yet somehow still rooting for love to prevail. It shouldn’t have been possible to tell a love story amidst so much heartache and pain, but Rollness did it with such skill that it felt both inevitable and beautiful.
If you're looking for a story that will leave you reeling, questioning everything, and ultimately believing in the rage of women and the resilience of love, Black and Blue Widow is a must-read.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I think this is a debut, I can’t believe this is a debut. The story telling is just… my stomach dropped, my jaw dropped, it is so good. And the weaving of Ancient Rome, the culture, architecture, gods and goddesses — chef’s kiss.
And the plot twists, I thought I had one; I changed my mind, I shouldn’t have, I was almost there. I was caught by surprise and that makes me giddy when I can’t see it coming.
Lastly, the ruthlessness, this book made my stomach turn, I was so emotionally invested.
I could not put this book down. Definitely check your trigger warnings as this book is violent, but it is so so good.
The book follows the story of two women, Luella and Rose. Luella is meting out vigilante justice. She identifies the scum of the Earth and marries them, then kills them on their wedding night. Rose is hoping to escape her terrible home life by seeking safety in marriage.
I thought the ancient Rome setting was really well done. It was a much different settings than most of the fantasy books I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it.
Such a strong debut novel. This book took me through such an array of emotions with twists that you start to piece together but still gasp at the reveal. And through all the feminine rage and vigilante justice, a love story blossoms. Rollness is a masterful story teller. What a powerful reminder of the strength of women.
5⭐️1🌶️
Two women. Rose facing the reality,the  cruelty of life in the hands of men. And Luella exacting revenge on the cruelty of men.
Both living 10 year apart but as one ☝️. One taking in all the hurts, rage, pain and grieve and another spewing it all out in the  form of gore, revenge, poison,mourning the loss of one’s husbands.
This read was a little out of my conflict zone but so refreshing to tap into my feminine rage, into the intoxication of others dictating my choices, my body, my power. The republic shouldn’t have a say upon the US. Upon our BODIES, our CHOICES, our AUTONOMY.
 And this read was a reminder that we HAVE TOOLS ⚒️ 🫚🧪 📣 to advocate for changes. That we must keep fighting to break the chains ⛓️‍💥 of society upon us.
I enjoyed the rage, the power, the hurt and these two women found someone to stand with them as equal to help amplify her voice to be heard by others.
Books are POLITICAL and I’m all for it. And it can help us analyze ourselves our beliefs and our power.
This will remind him that I’m not a beautiful thing. I’m jagged. Sharp. A tiny little spider in the center of a giant web, just waiting to strike.
So impressive! An Ode to women! Specially those that fight against patriarchy or extreme relig* believes.
The world, the wording (using inspired Latin words in a Roman inspired world), the monologue and dialogue (I'm making mantras out of some of the these!), but most importantly our heroine.
Pure morally black to grey heroine that will unalive any men that commits crimes against women.
Very dark romance (every type of SA and torture against women, men and children, mostly not on page 😮‍💨).
Low spice (1,5 🍆) as you should on a book with these triggers
Trigger warning: this book is a dark romantasy that deals heavily with themes of sexual assault and human trafficking.
Set in Divus, a fantastical backdrop of Roman mythology, Black and Blue Widow marks author Rhiannon Rollness’ debut. The story thrusts femme fatale Luella Amulius into a den of wretched senators, leaving readers suspended on the precipice of wondering whose venom will strike first: the politicking vipers’, or the black (and blue) widow’s.
Cue credits.
Pitched as a Promising Young Woman meets Dexter standalone, the novel is a sucker punch to the extreme ends of patriarchal violence, centred around the journey of our black widow, who ventures, video game theory style, from wedding night to wedding night, all in the hopes of confronting and dispatching the boss himself, the Imperator.
In stark contrast, and on the opposite embankment of this crimson river, runs Rose’s story—our second protagonist: a young woman of twenty, who has no money and no prospects. She’s already a burden to her parents and she’s frightened—of her drunken, violent father, mostly.
I jest, but for real: although our femme fatale is eager to wed to exact divine retribution, Rose’s eagerness stems from the need to free herself from the violence of her home, and to have a fighting chance to save her sister, Daisy.
The story explores both the origins and slow-building nature of domestic abuse, and alternates between both women’s stories. It offers us the perspective o two plebeians gaining access to the patrician class through matrimony, and explores both the naivety of a young newly wed, and a seasoned vet with an intricate web full of daddy longlegs.
I received this book as an ARC from the author and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you’re writing a femme fatale, I’m there. If you’re writing a man who wants her despite knowing she’ll kill him—which this book *also* offers—I’m there. Roman/Greek mythology that’s applied to a gritty world that doesn’t shy from ugliness, but rather, confronts it head-on? I’m. So. There.
Black and Blue Widow unfolded at a steadily rapid pace, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. I rooted start to finish for every woman in the cast, and the downfall of every patrician and patriarch.
Rollness suffuses a tale that could have easily been an onslaught of trauma with empathy, and without sacrificing femininity. Luella Amulius is not a hardhearted vestige of her own circumstances and tragedy, but rather, she is a woman driven by the desire to protect other women, and Rollness guides us through the novel with her gentle hand.
I would highly recommend this read, provided potential readers go through the trigger warnings thoroughly beforehand, and I’m excited to see what else is in store for this author.
When I heard about a dark romantasy that mixes elements of the show Dexter with a fictionalized ancient Rome, you could say I was intrigued. But once I actually dug into Black and Blue Widow? Wow. It was so much more.
Written in dual POV, we enter a brutal world where the chauvinism and politics of a pseudo-Roman empire collide with realistic magic and gods that do a lot more than simply pose as statues. Of our two protagonists, Luella is the femme fatale. A seductive but deadly vigilante whose mission is to cleanse the republic of its most dangerous and sadistic womanizers. Gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading her perspective and getting inside the head of a righteous serial killer (as scary as that might sound). Rhiannon Rollness has a superb understanding of psychology and human physiology, bringing Luella’s lethality to life in a deliciously realistic way. Where some books rely on stereotypically muscular, butt-kicking female protagonists who can miraculously throw around men thrice their size like rag dolls, Luella uses cunning, misdirection and an array of poisons to get the job done.
Rose is the exact opposite—a kind-hearted girl yearning for a traditional marriage and an escape from her abusive father. Unfortunately, like the world we live in, the innocent make for easy prey with the predators lurking among us. As a man, I found it striking how well this book illustrates the vulnerability that women often feel, especially when faced with abusive relationships. This makes the plot all the more interesting as we watch the paths of our two protagonists begin to intersect.
Oh, and a warm shoutout to my boy, Cassius, the glutton for romantic punishment. Seriously, he’s the whole package: Smart, powerful and incredibly loyal to the ones he loves.
If you’re looking for a super gritty dark fantasy with a dash of spicy romance, you’re in the right place. Though be warned. This puppy isn’t for the faint of heart. Trigger warnings include torture, sexual assault, and of course, plenty of good ol’ fashion murder. Overall, the pacing was great, the characters and world-building were solid, and rest assured, it’s a story I certainly won’t forget. Congrats to Rhiannon Rollness and I look forward to her future offerings.
**I received and advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review**
It was difficult for me to get into this book. I didn’t really start getting invested until maybe 40%-50% of the way through, and even then, I was still wondering, “how are these two dual POVs interrelated?” (The answer came around 80% of the way through the book, and that was a twist I should have predicted, but didn’t. Still deciding if I liked that twist or not, but I’m leaning towards yes.) I think if the first 20% of the book was cut (essentially the whole storyline between Luella and Ledo), with more time devoted to developing Cassius and Luella’s (hi)story, I would have been a little more invested and earlier.
I think part of the reason I struggled to get into the book earlier was because I felt like I was missing SO much information about the world. Much of the book revolves around (violent) female subjugation, but I don’t really understand why that is or the history behind how that world came to be but I assume this is something that came from the book being based on Roman history.
The use of Latin phrases throughout the book confused me. I found myself pulled from the book often because I was struggling to understand the Latin words/phrases used in seemingly every other sentence. For a lot of sentences there weren’t many context clues that could have given me a hand in decoding some mystery words.
Major trigger warning for implied and depictions of rape. I disliked this strongly throughout the book, and I wonder how necessary the graphic descriptions were to advance the plot. I finished those chapters feeling very ill & heavy, and it made it extremely difficult for me to find the motivation to keep reading.
Overall, I would give 3 stars. If a second book came out, I would read it. I would be interested to see how Luella’s life would continue in this new world (spoiler?). I think the writing itself was pretty good, mostly just structural things that bothered me.
Black and Blue Widow is a powerful story about the resilience of women in general and of survivors in particular. Rollness effortless weaves (pun intended) the stories of two women experiencing the same abusive and misogynistic society in two different ways.
The juxtaposition of experiences between the character keeps you guessing about how and when their paths will collide and the payoff of that moment is pure magic. Rollness writing style is succinct fast paced, moving you through the action of her vigilante main character effortlessly, while also being gentle and thoughtful about how she approaches the use of violence against women in her story. Rollness includes trigger warnings in her book and they should be taken seriously, as the violent scenes in this book are graphic and not for the faint of heart. It’s not gratuitous however, and Rollness only shows the reader what they need to see in order to understand her characters journeys.
With Black and Blue Widow, Rollness turns victims into superheroes and allows us to experience a character growth journey unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. A fantastic debut a novel that will leave readers eager to experience whatever comes next from this author!
This book captivated me from the very first page and never let go! There wasn't a single dull moment or paragraph of unnecessary fluff. Once I started reading, I couldn't tear myself away until I had devoured every last word.
What truly stood out was the dual points of view. The story cleverly contrasts a woman filled with rage and thirst for revenge in dark times, and a woman who is powerless against her circumstances. The intertwining of these two narratives was masterfully done, showcasing the utter heartbreak and brutality of the time, yet somehow weaving in a beautiful love story.
The twist—oh, the twist! It was absolutely delicious and took me by surprise. The story is a testament of women's empowerment, revenge, justice, and love. It’s giving serious #VigilanteShit vibes.
However, it's important to note that there are some truly dark abuse scenes. The trigger warnings are there for a reason. While these scenes were at times, hard to read, I feel they were not gratuitous. Instead, they were vitally important to the story, demonstrating the level of brutality and dehumanization faced by the characters.
5 out of 5 for me!
The women of the Republic can do little without a husband. Rose Octavius knows this and desperately seeks a husband before her father sells her off. But as she seeks marriage, she finds it may just be another form of prison. Meanwhile, Luella Amulius has been blessed by Janus to wear what face she chooses so she can hunt the monstrous men of the Republic and kill them on their wedding nights. With each husband she buries, she steps closer to the very man she has hunted from her start. But when the Dominus catches on to her plans, he offers himself as another stepping stone in her path to retribution.
“Black and Blue Widow” is a novel of feminine rage told through the lens of women who find the power to change their fate. With Roman Gods, ghosts of buried pasts, friendship, and sisterhood, this fantasy is for those who wanted to see more of Lucilla in “Gladiator” and needed her to have the rage and ruinous wrath of Cassie in “Promising Young Woman”. The dual POV’s of Luella and Rose are brilliant, combining a cunning mind and beautiful heart to tell a story of power and promises.
When I first stumbled upon this novel, I knew I needed it like air. First of all, Janus is probably the most fascinating Roman god that I've ever read about and to finally see him depicted in modern literature was so exciting. I positively geeked out in Rollness’ DMs with every Greco-Roman reference made! And this was just one component of the story. Luella was brilliant and Rose had my heart every time I came to a chapter in her POV. By the end of the book, I wanted to know more about the world, about how much the gods would interfere, and what promises would be fulfilled.
Strength is a fascinating concept, because it does not have to be brutish in nature. It could be kindness; it could be hope; it could be silence. Luella knows this and Rose has to learn it. But, when they finally find the strength to make a choice in a world that refuses to see them, they find the power to change the cruel fates that are written for them. Janus is the god of the beginning and the end, and it is he who holds open the door for both their hope and their rage.
Thank you to the author for the ARC!
I loved this. The way the two story lines intertwine was written so well. Definitley check triggered warnings bc it’s a bit dark and there’s a lot of physical/sexual abuse on page.
We love a woman on her feminine rage, vigilante shit. It was like the fantasy version of Lana Myers. I thought she was written very well because not only do you see the tough side of her, but the author gives us the soft side of her as well. It’s impossible not to love Luella. I also loved Rose’s story, although sad. Her story is full of hope and excitement for the future. Which is so juxtaposed to Luella’s story.
Also Cassius?!? ““I think I might know you, in any form, Luella.” Or “Do you know that I can hardly breathe when you leave my sight? That our plans mean nothing to me if they risk you?” Plz I love this man 🧎‍♀️🫦
This was so good. I was hooked from the first chapter, and couldn’t put it down. Absolutely worth the read and I’m so lucky to have received an ARC!
