How to Assassinate a Wizard

Rate this book
Kedric, a skilled and confident young wizard, has been living in exile in a foreign kingdom for many years. News of threats to his adopted kingdom sends him far to the north, where ill tidings from Senture, the kingdom that exiled him, find him and seek to tear him away from his mission to save his adopted home. As Kedric and the Mage Hunter Delan travel to confront the dangers in the north, they discover that there is something which connects the troubles in the north and the south, threatening all of Senture and the Collegia Magica, the place Kedric truly calls his home. Enemies both new and old converge to exact their vengeance for his past deeds, and Kedric has to push forward to save the kingdom that drove him away so long ago and reclaim the life he once lost and might have again.

4.5 but rounded up because I'm hoping this is the first in a series. I want to read about the future adventures of Kendric, Delan and others (don't want to name names that might spoil other's reading). The magic system is interesting and the dialogue is entertaining. There are heroes and villains who may or may not be who you think they are. I look forward to reading more by this author and more in this world.

This was a very clever book.

Not gonna lie, that opening chapter made me wonder, "where are we going from here?!?!" However, there was PLENTY of things that happened and also things that left me wondering, "HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF THAT?!?" There are several cliffhangers throughout the book that keep you reading, so if you are a late night reader, please be prepared.

Kedric is a likeable character if for nothing else than he literally does not care what anyone else thinks or does. He does not care about the "system" and feels like it's kind of pointless.

I enjoyed the relationships he built throughout the story. I liked the male friendship between Kedric and Delan it is rare to see that developed so quickly and well in a story like this and have it be something that continues throughout the story, even if it is at a distance at some points.

The relationship and main conflict was a twist I did not see coming AT ALL, and that is saying something. I really enjoyed being surprised.

And though this is not a romance book, this story is really about love and friendship and how that shapes a person's whole way of being and existing.

I hope there is a book two soon.
