Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

জাফর ইকবাল স্যার ভৌতিক আবহ তৈরিতে একদম সিদ্ধহস্ত। প্রত্যেকটা গল্প পড়তেই গা ছমছম করছিলো। উৎকৃষ্ট ভৌতিক গল্পের যে সমস্ত উপাদান থাকে তার প্রত্যেকটি আমি পেয়েছি। সবগুলোর মধ্যে 'পিশাচ' গল্পটা সামান্য স্পেশাল। খুব হাসি পাচ্ছিলো। স্যারের সেন্স অব হিউমারটাও খুব আছে।

ছোট ছোট মোট ৬ টা গল্প আছে বইটাতে। প্রায় প্রতিটাই বাংলাদেশের পটভূমিতে লিখা (গ্যারেজ বাদে)। আর দেশী ভূতের গল্পের প্রতি টান থাকায় খুব বেশী খারাপ লাগেনি। তবে গল্প গুলোকে আরো বড় করা যেত। মালমশলা ভালই ছিল লেখকের হাতে বাট কেন যেন মনে হয়েছে খুব জলদি ছোট করে ফেলা হয়েছে।
গল্প গুলোর মাঝে রত্না, পিশাচ, টেলিফোন ইউনিক লেগেছে। সাথী বড্ড বেশী কমন থিম। আর গ্যারেজও বিদেশী পটভূমিতে লিখা হলেও কমন গল্প।
নাম ভূমিকায় অন্য জীবন গল্পটা বড় বেশী কমন থিম। এর চেয়ে রত্নাকে নাম ভূমিকায় রাখলে মনে হয় বেশী ভাল হত।
যাই হোক মুজাইকের বই অনেক বেশী পড়ে ফেলায় তার লিখা সব বইই কেমন যেন মুজাইক থিমের মনে হয়।

গত কয়েক বছর ধরেই মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের বই পড়ে আমার ভালো লাগছিলো না। লেখায় সেই আগের ম্যাজিক নেই, যত্নের ছাপটা নেই, কেমন হঠাত করেই শেষ হয়ে যায় বই। প্রতি মেলায় ৭-৮টা করে বই বের করতে হলে যা হয় আরকি।
এজন্যে এবছর উনার লেখা কোন বইই কিনার প্ল্যান ছিল না, হঠাতই চোখে পড়লো এই বইটার নাম। ভৌতিক বিষয় নিয়ে লেখা দেখে কিনে ফেললাম সাহস করে। স্যারের লেখা প্রেত আর পিশাচিনী বইদুটো কমপক্ষে ৫বার করে পড়েছি যে।
বইটা একটা ছোট গল্প সংকলন টাইপের, ৬টা গল্প আছে এখানে। প্রতিটা গল্পের প্রিমাইজ বেশ সুন্দর, খুব সুন্দর করে ঘটনা বিল্ডআপ করা হয়েছে। ভরদুপুরে পড়েছি বলে ভয় লাগেনি, রাতে পড়লে বুঝা যেতো কি অবস্থা আসলে। তারপরে যথারীতি হঠাত করে ছেড়ে দেয়া হয়েছে কাহিনী। এটাই কি এখন উনার লেখার স্টাইল? পাঠকের জন্যে রেখে দেন শেষের অংশ? আগের সেই লেখার ধরনের সাথে মিলাতে পারছিনা বলেই কস্ট লাগে।
রত্না গল্পটা বেশ সুন্দর। সাথী গল্পটাও সুন্দর। একটু এক্সপ্লোর করতে চাইলে এই বইয়ের প্রতিটা গল্প নিয়ে আলাদা আলাদা উপন্যাস লেখা যেতো। কিন্তু স্যারের আর সেই সময় আছে বলে মনে হচ্ছে না। পিশাচ আর অন্য জীবন গল্প দুটোর সাথে আগের লেখা একটা ভৌতিক গল্প আর একটা কিশোর অ্যাডভেঞ্চার বইয়ের মিল পেলাম। সেটা কাহিনীর শুরুতেই, শেষের সাথে মিল নেই। কারন শেষ যে হঠাত করেই, খাপছাড়া।
নাহ, ক্রেনিয়াল বইটা কিনবো কিনা সন্দেহে পড়ে গেলাম।

Well, I daresay I am going to begin this review with a bit of self-introduction. I am nearly 26 years old, quite a brave person (I first read Frankenstein at age of 7 without batting an eyelash, I often stay completely home-alone for 20-30 days at stretch and so on), and as a hardcore atheist- I have faith on neither god nor any sort of apparitions. I would even go overboard and declare Myself an enlightened being.
Now, let's see what this collection of horror stories did to Me. I read the first story at around 1 in the morning. Despite being a nocturnal, I decided to stop reading and go sleep- with lights on. After having an hour of traumatic visions and semi-conscious "sleep", I went to mamma's room with pillow in My hand, curled up while clutching her and still had a very disturbing night.
*Not going to read horrors after sundown. EVER.

বাইরে ঝড়-বৃষ্টি, বিদ্যুৎ নেই সন্ধ্যা থেকে, মোমবাতি জ্বলছে ঘরে; ভূতের গল্প পড়ার জন্যে দারুণ একটা পরিবেশ।
একবসায় শেষ করে ফেললাম জাফর ইকবালের অন্য জীবন বইটি। মোট ৬টি ছোটগল্প স্থান পেয়েছে ১২৮ পৃষ্ঠার এই বইটিতে, যার মধ্যে ৫ টিই বাংলাদেশের প্রেক্ষাপটে লিখা। ভিন্ন ভিন্ন স্বাদের গল্প গুলো বেশ সহজ ভাষায় লিখা তাই পড়তে বসলে বোর হবার উপায় নেই। যদিও তেমন আহামরি কিছু না, তবে গল্প গুলো তেমন একটা খারাপও লাগে নি। বিশেষ করে পরিবেশটা গল্পগুলোকে আরো উপভোগ্য করে তুলেছিল। আসলে ভূতের গল্প পুরোপুরি উপভোগ করতে চাইলে বইয়ের কোয়ালিটির সাথে একটা ভৌতিক পরিবেশেরও দরকার আছে।

ঘূর্ণিঝড় মিধিলির প্রভাবে সারা চট্টগ্রাম শুনশান। কনকনে ঠান্ডা হাওয়া, সেই সাথে গুড়িগুড়ি বৃষ্টি, মাঝে মাঝে দমকা ঢেউ খেলে যাচ্ছে বাতাসে। দিনভর বৃষ্টি হয়ে এখন রাতে কিছুটা থমথমে পরিস্থিতি। ভৌতিক গল্প পড়ার বা শোনার উপযুক্ত পরিবেশ।
'অন্য জীবন' বইটিতে মোট ৬ টি ছোটগল্প আছে। এদের মাঝে কয়েকটি বেশ ভালো লেগেছে। যেমন বইটির টাইটুলার গল্প 'অন্য জীবন'। গ্রামীণ পটভূমিতে এক বাপমা হারানো কিশোরকে নিয়ে লেখা। রাত নামলেই তার সাথে 'ওরা' খেলতে আসে।
তারপর 'পিশাচ'। এ গল্পটি একটু অন্যরকম। কারণ আসলেই মূল গল্পে ভূত/পিশাচ এসেছিলো নাকি টিপুর কল্পনাই তাকে সৃষ্টি করেছে-এই প্রশ্নের জবাব লেখক দেননি। তবে গল্পটি মানব সভ্যতায় ভূত/পিশাচ সংক্রান্ত বিশ্বাসের একটা আলাদারকম ব্যাখা দেয়ার চেষ্টা করেছে বলে মনে হল।
'গ্যারেজ' চমৎকার গা ছমছমে গল্প। প্রত্যন্ত আমেরিকায় কানাগুয়া পাস নামে হন্টেড এক রাস্তায় দুই হাইকার ছেলেমেয়ের বিপদে পড়ার কাহিনী।
'সাথী' গল্পটা বেশ ছোট। রুবিনা নামের এক লেকচারারের নিজ মুখে বলা গল্প। তাঁর সাথে একই ফ্ল্যাট শেয়ার করতে আসে শাহানা নামের আরেকটি মেয়ে। সাথে নিয়ে আসে 'অন্য কিছু'।
'টেলিফোন' একটু কমন কাহিনী। তবে পড়তে খারাপ না। প্রথম গল্প 'রত্না' সবচেয়ে দূর্বল লেগেছে। বিশেষ করে এন্ডিংটা।
সবমিলিয়ে রেটিং ৪/৫। অনেকে বেশ হতাশ। আমার তেমন লাগেনি। তবে মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের কিছু ট্রেডমার্ক শব্দগুচ্ছ থাকে প্রতিটা ভৌতিক লেখায়। যেমন গরম হলকার মত বাতাস, মাংস পোড়া গন্ধ, অশরীরী আতঙ্ক, ঠান্ডা ঘর, অন্ধকারে আবছা অবয়ব ইত্যাদি। এগুলো রিপিটেটিভ।

One of my favourite genres is horror. However I expected more chills from a horror collection of zafar Iqbal which I didn't get from this book. If I'm asked what I liked most about this book, I will tell the "hmmm, the pages of the book are of real good quality"(and I'm sorry to say this as it only reflects the commercial gain by the publisher). At some parts of the book I felt that the book was written keeping in mind to not to scare weak hearted people. If the finishing of a horror story does not create a confusion to place the reader's mind in a dazed state of inconclusiveness about the supernatural event, I don't count it much as a horror rather a little piece of fiction.
The theme of the second story("পিশাচ") was not a new one. just an old syrup in a new bottle.
I liked the last one ("অন্য জীবন") most.
so, my suggestion will be, those who are really afraid to read ghost stories fearing they will not be able to go to restroom after finishing one they must read this book as a starter. But if you are a super fan of horror stories may keep this book in a queue for a relaxation period when you have just finished a nerve-chilling story and want something to distract your mind.
Now after re-reading my own review two thoughts are lurking around my mind. May be I underrated the book or I'm afraid that my days of adrenaline are going to be over(oh, that's so frustrating)

It is a short story collection. There are six short stories in the book. Almost all of them have been based in Bangladesh except one. I love deshi ghosts and demons and jiins, so loved this book.
But the stories could have been longer to make them more endearing. I was reading them and was really hooked but before long they were finished which was disappointing. If they were longer, then it would have been more satisfying because I really liked the plots except one which seemed childish. I think the author had all the ingredients to have a great impact but he intentionally cut the stories short which was sad.
Some of the stories were real standouts especially the ones about demonic jiins and the dissatisfied dead. There was a story about a demon that possesses a girl that practically scared the living daylight out of me. One story was based in the USA which was really cool and spooky to read. It had the feel of a Stephen King novel.
I really enjoy and revere Muhammad Zafar Iqbal’s works, and I wasn’t disappointed with the quality of his writing either. This book can be finished in one or two sittings because it is gripping and suspenseful but it does lack depth which is a con but that’s not a serious issue though.

অনেক দিন পর জাফর ইকবালের ভৌতিক গল্প পড়লাম । জাফর ইকবালের ভৌতিক গল্প আমার বরাবরই ভালো লাগে । আর অন্য জীবনটা আমার কাছে একটু অন্য ধাচের মনে হয়েছে । বেশ ভালো লেগেছে অন্তত রাতে পড়লে একটু হলেও গা ছমছম করবে ।

সর্বমোট ৬টি গল্প। রত্না, পিশাচ, টেলিফোন, সাথী, গ্যারেজ এবং অন্য জীবন।।
খুবই ভয়ংকর, আতঙ্কজনক এমন বই বলবো না তবে অবশ্যই বেশ ভালো লাগার মত ভৌতিক কাহিনী বলা যায়। রত্না এবং পিশাচ এই দুটি গল্প ছাড়া বাকি যে চারটি গল্প আছে সেই চারটির প্রতিটি গল্পই আমার ভালো লেগেছে বেশি। বিশেষ করে টেলিফোন গল্পটি বেশ চমকপ্রদ এবং বুকে ভয় ধরানোর মতো। অন্য জীবন যেটার নামে বইটির নামকরণ করা হয়েছে এই গল্পটিও অসাধারণ ছিল। গল্পটির শেষ অংশ পর্যন্ত না পড়ে উঠতে পারছিলাম না।।
ভালো ছিল, আমার ভালো লেগেছে বইটি।।

হরর বা ভৌতিক জনরা নিয়ে আমার অন্যরকম একটা আগ্রহ আছে, যেই জনরার অন্যতম উপাদান-ভয়৷ যেই ভয়কে আমরা ''ভয়'' পাই, সেই ভয়ই একসময় এমন এক আফিমের মাতাল নেশা ধরিয়ে দেয় যে, আমাদের তনুমন সেই নেশার প্রবল জোয়ারে ভিন্ন এক পর্যায়ে চলে যায়; মারাত্মক উত্তেজনায় আপাদমস্তক শিহরিত হতে থাকে৷তা না হলে, প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্ম কেন ''হরর''বলতে পাগল!
সত্যি বলতে, আমি এখনো পর্যন্ত কোন সেইরকম হরর মুভি কিংবা বই পড়িনি৷ কেন? তা আমার মনের খেয়ালের জ্ঞাত বিষয়৷
তবে বেশ কিছু হরর টিভি শো দেখার সুযোগ হয়েছে; এই সনি আটের ''আহট'' বা জী এর '' দ্য জি হরর শো'' এর মত লো বাজেটের শো আরকি৷ তাছাড়া করোনা মহামারিতে চলমান লকডাউনের সময়ে ইউটিউব ব্লগারদের নানা কিসিমের ''হরর চ্যালেঞ্জ''দারুন উপভোগ করতাম৷
আর সবমিলিয়ে আমি যা বুঝলাম , তা হলো যে হরর জনরাতে এই অলৌকিক ও প্যারানরমাল বিষয়বস্তু থাকা অবশ্যকর্তব্য;
তন্মন্ধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য অতৃপ্ত আত্মা,ভূত-প্রেত-পিশাচ,জ্বীন-পরী, শয়তান-ডাইনী,প্রভৃতি এবং তাদের তেল-মশলাদার কার্যকলাপ৷৷সাথে এই নিয়ে প্রচলিত মিথ আর লোককাহিনী তো বিনামূল্যে!
আরেকটা বিষয় আমি প্রায়ই খেয়াল করি, তা হচ্ছে এগুলোর সিংহভাগে আশাব্যাঞ্জক বা মিলনাত্মক সমাপ্তি থাকে না,বরং তাদের শেষে কোন অসমাপ্তি কিংবা ভৌতিকতার রেশ থেকে যায়৷
কিন্তু এই ধারা ভঙ্গ করতে দেখলাম এই বইয়ে-মুহাম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের ''অন্য জীবন' এ৷
বইয়ে সংকলিত প্রায় অধিকাংশ গল্পে একদম হাসিখুশি এন্ডিং; টিপিক্যাল ভূতুড়ে গল্পগুলোর অতৃপ্ত আত্মা এখানে ''তৃপ্ত''
হয়ে যায়,ফলে পড়ার সময় যে থ্রিলিং থ্রিলিং ভূতুড়ে অনুভূতি ছিল, তা শেষে এসে ধূলিসাৎ হয়ে যায়!
ভিন্নতার দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে এটা অনেক অভিনব মনে হলেও তা ''হরর'' অনুভূতিটাকে খর্ব করে ফেলেছে, যা হতাশাব্যঞ্জক৷
তাই পুরো বইজুড়ে তেমন মজাই পাইনি!!!
স্টোরি বিল্ডাপও খুবই দুর্বল, লেখনী মোটামুটি লেগেছে.........
তবে যাদের হৃৎপিণ্ড দুর্বল এবং অল্পতেই সেইরকম ভয় পান, তারা পড়ে দেখতে পারেন.........

বইটা আসলে পড়ার কথা ছিল না। আমার বই পড়ার অভ্যাসটা গড়ে উঠেছিল মোহাম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের বই পড়ে। ওনার কিশোর উপন্যাস প্রচুর পড়েছি। এখন ওনার বই পড়ি না, তবে মাঝে মাঝে হালকা সুযোগ পেলে পড়ি, যেমন এইটা। আসলে রিসেন্টলি এক আত্মীয়ের বাসায় এই বইয়ের 'রত্না' গল্পের শুরুটা পড়ে বেশ প্রমিসিং লেগেছিল। কিন্তু কিভাবে জানি আর শেষ করতে পারি নাই গল্পটা। তাই পরে ঠিক করলাম পুরা বইটাই পড়ব।
প্রথমে 'রত্না' গল্পটা, এটার শুরুটা খুব প্রমিসিং ছিল তবে শেষে গিয়ে খুবই ক্লিশে আর ফালতু হয়ে গেছে। 'পিশাচ' গল্পটার মধ্যে আসলে কিছুই ছিল না, শুধু সেই তথাকথিত ইকবালীয় বিজ্ঞানমনস্কতা আর যুক্তিবাদীতার কিছু ফাউল বয়ান ছাড়া, হিউমারের অংশটা হয়েছে পুরাই জগাখিছুরি। 'টেলিফোন' গল্পটা পুরাই ক্লিশে, সেই সাথে হালকা সিরিয়াস প্লটকে লেখক তার শিশু উপযোগী লেখা দিয়ে বানিয়েছেন আরও হাস্যকর।
এরপরের গল্পটা 'সাথী', এটাও ক্লিশে তবে আগের তিনটা গল্প পড়ে এই বইটা থেকে আর বিন্দু পরিমাণও এক্সপেক্টেশন ছিল না তাই অত খারাপও লাগে নি। হরর পোর্শনটাও মোটামোটি ভালো ছিল। ভালো ছিল 'গ্যারেজ' গল্পটাও, গল্পটা গতানুগতিক হলেও ভুত এফ এম টাইপ এক্সিকিউশনের জন্যে মোটামোটি ভালোই লেগেছে। আর বইয়ের নাম ভূমিকার গল্প 'অন্য জীবন'ও ছিল প্রচন্ড দূর্বল, তেমন একটা ভালো হয় নি।
যাইহোক, সব মিলিয়ে বইটা বিলো এভারেজ লেগেছে। শুধুমাত্র লেখকের সাবলীল লেখনি (যেটা আবার তার সেরা বইগুলোর তুলনায় অনেক ফালতু) এর জন্য কোনোমতে পড়া গেছে। আবার, অতিপ্রাকৃত গল্পে ধর্মকে অবিশ্বাস টাইপ জিনিসকে এস্টাবলিশ করার প্রচেষ্টাটা একদম হাস্যকর হয়েছে।

প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের জন্য লেখা ভৌতিক গল্পের বই ভেবে কিনেছিলাম, কিন্তু পড়ে হতাশ হয়েছি। কিশোরদের জন্য ঠিক আছে।
আমার কাছে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালো লেগেছে "গ্যারেজ" গল্পটা। বাকিগুলোর কাহিনী গতানুগতিক।
