With that out of the way, let's begin. This is the blah, blah, blah section. You know the author’s “glory page” where he gets to tell you grandiose things about himself and the deeper meaning of his work. Whatever.
I write books. Seriously, that's what I get to do every day. It's great.
I have been fortunate to author some that have achieved bestseller status, including The Hunters Series of mystery suspense thrillers. It took me a lot of years to get to that point, but I wouldn't trade any of them for a minute. I love writing books for you and the journey that brought me here.
I am a native of the south, Georgia specifically. I spent much of my life there, but I have lived in many other places as well. We moved a lot when I was young. Eventually, we ended up back in Georgia in my teens where I finished school and went to work.
I wanted to write from an early age. A really long time ago, when I was still a young police officer in Georgia, I was writing short stories in my spare time and sending them off to magazines. One day I received one back in the mail.
Life Happened
Attached to it was a nice handwritten letter from an editor (this was long before the days of email and texts). The story manuscript was folded and smudged, and there were coffee cup rings on the edges of a couple of pages, which told me they had actually read it, maybe discussed it around an editorial table, or just used it to sop up the coffee.
In her letter, the editor said a lot of things that I don't remember, but it was not the usual form letter that I was accustomed to receiving. It was original and personal.
She said they liked my story, had strongly considered it for publication, but that it wasn't quite believable. Disappointed as I was, I was struck by her last words to me..."Don't stop writing. You're good at this. We almost bought this one."
I remember staring at that a long time. Then I folded it up and tucked it in a file and...stopped writing.
I wish I could tell you a different story, but I can't. I stopped writing for many years.
There were lots of reasons. Yes, I was disappointed, but the letter that should have encouraged me not to give up was forgotten.
Life happened. Dreams of writing were pushed aside by other things...important things.
Mostly I needed money for my young family. In the 1970s, police officers in Georgia were not paid a lot even by the standards of the day. I worked part-time jobs whenever I wasn't working at the police department. Many weeks I had no days off at all.
I'm not unhappy that I did my best to take care of my family. It was the right thing to do and working for them was the joy of my life.
Children grew up; then grandchildren came along. More life happened.
Then...The Internet Appeared
Out of the blue, this thing called the internet appeared and guess what. I was at a point in life when I didn't need to work part-time jobs every spare minute of the day. I could write again.
It's different these days. I can publish a book whether I convince an agent or editor to read it or not. I am an independent writer/publisher, an “Indie.”
It’s a partnership between us, writer and reader, and it's a marvelous thing.
Don't be a Follower -- Make Your Dream Real
It took many years to get here. Life is like that, with lots of twists and turns and surprises. I like it that way.
Now, I write every day, so here's my parting advice. Don’t follow your dreams. Followers get nowhere except up the backside of the person in front.
Many authors create series around a core group of characters who are part of an elite unit, but few have managed to throw together as many far flung characters and plot threads (and still keep at least a thriller level of plausibility) as Glenn Trust has in his Hunters series. The books feature the exploits of a variety of Georgia law enforcement officers who come together to take on a variety of the nastiest bad guys around. This volume includes the first three books in the Hunters series, a series that, when taken as a whole, delivers plenty of action, thrills, and well written suspense.
Although the heroes in The Hunters come from various parts of the state of Georgia, surprisingly, much of the action centers on rural Pickham County, a small county in southeast Georgia that’s mostly woods and swamp, but which is also home to George Mackey, a very astute deputy sheriff. In Eyes of the Predator, Mackey gets involved with a far ranging serial killer, who goes on jaunts across the South that involve him picking up young women, then torturing and killing them. He has avoided capture and detection because he’s quite well organized, but when he happens to murder his latest victim in Pickham County, he comes to the attention of Mackey, who winds up working with a Georgia Bureau of Investigation task force that eventually gets assigned to the case.
Mackey and his newfound friends are back in The Term Limits Conspiracy, a completely different style of book, this time a political thriller. Once again, people are being killed all across Georgia by a team of well-organized hitmen working for a shadowy group of prominent businessmen and politicians with an agenda. And, once again, one of their victims just happens to reside in Pickham County, which means that Mackey again gets assigned the case. And, once again, he’s working in conjunction with some other cops who are working the murders that occur in their own jurisdictions.
Finally, in Criminal Enterprise, local mobsters team up with a South American cartel to form a white slave pipeline that kidnaps young women , transports them to the Georgia backwoods, and then ships them overseas to become prostitutes. This time, most of the action takes place in the next county over from Pickham, but the local sheriff brings Mackey in on the case when it appears the bad guys are using a backwoods brothel as their staging ground.
In all three books, author Trust tells his story from the points of view of various characters, both heroes and villains, alternating from chapter to chapter. Despite the large casts, he is able to create fairly realistic characters and keep reader interest. This technique works best in Eyes of the Predator, in which readers get caught up in the alternating stories of the killer and the victim-to-be, who start out a considerable distance from each other and whose paths inexorably cross. However, there’s also plenty of action with backwoods showdowns for the finale of each book. Trust does a very good job of bringing the readers right in the middle of the action in those.
As a Georgian myself, I enjoyed the detail with which Trust describes his settings, both the rural ones and the ones taking place in Atlanta. There are a number of counties pretty much like Pickham, and Trust picks up on the details of local life and politics to create credible scenarios. In fact, for the most part, he provides enough detail to make the larger criminal conspiracies credible enough for the purposes of thriller writing. The odds of three big cases like these converging in one tiny neck of the woods in a fairly short period of time are considerable, but readers are easily able to gloss over this and enjoy the fast-paced plots.
Although Eyes of the Predator is the best of these three books, all three of them are quite entertaining thrillers. And, with all three in one volume, readers get to see how the unit comes together over the course of the books and follow the character developments as well, as the various members of the team come more into focus. More than anything, reading all three books together gives readers an appreciation for the breadth of Trust’s writing skills and his ability to craft three quite different varieties of thrillers and keep them all entertaining. Readers who enjoy police thrillers or procedurals will definitely want to hunt down The Hunters.
This series dealing with the often overlooked crime of human trafficking and the violence involved is very interesting and we'll written. It portrays heroes who struggle with their own problems while risking their lives to protect others. Filled with suspense and several surprising turns, it captures and keeps the reader's attention from the first page to the very last.
This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I try to read at least one or two books a week. Some are good and this one is one of the best. I would recommend it to anyone.
Absolutely loved this series....I started the first one and couldn't stop reading...all 5 in a couple days. Usually in a series of books, I will move on to another book in between as it usually becomes tedious and sometimes monotonous but not with this series, it kept me doggedly trying to find out what's next. The relationship between George and Sharon as it came to be made my heart pound and with the other characters joining in to their world, I smiled, laughed and amazingly, cried. Like a girl! Like Sharon! 10 thumbs-up!!!
This was an intense, complex, suspenseful, and intriguing collection of stories that you certainly won't want to miss. I really enjoyed the down to earth characters, the humor, drama, angst, mystery, suspense, and the unexpected twists and turns. It's definitely a must read series. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
I really enjoyed reading this set of novels. Glenn Trust continued developing the characters throughout the series and kept me wanting to know more about them, especially George, and what he would get into next.
This set of 5 books are amazing. I couldn't put them down. A must read for those who like good detective novels with ongoing suspense throughout. Keep writing Glenn, you are a natural.
The three first volumes became so popular making a boxset at a reduced price is a great way to lure more readers in.
I have read "Eyes of the Predator", Sanctioned Murder" and "Criminal Enterprise by their own and enjoyed the thrilling ride into the world of crime and conspiracy. “The Hunters” is a team of superb characters that resolve matters of national interest although the plotlines retain a local southern Georgia flavour.
This is an addictive series that brings to life and paints through fiction a portrayal of victimization. Each book has a theme that brings out the good and the evil in humanity in a very interesting and suspenseful way.
This is a great collection I am happy to have in my library.
I am a fan of the Glenn Trust series of Hunter books, The first three have been amazing and I can't wait to move on to four and five and maybe more? The author has such an amazing talent of describing locations and character development and does a beautiful job with his compelling reads. All books in this series are worthy of five star ratings!
Very good reading from Mr. Trust. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of novels by a great Georgia author (I'm from GA). I will definitely be buying more of this author's work.
