VRC: Vampire Related Crimes #6

How to Entice a Fiend

Rate this book
Mads

As a member of the vampire council, being tasked with keeping an eye on a few people shouldn’t be too hard, right?

Wrong.

The moment I meet the VRC, I realize how very wrong I am. It’s fascinating how in a group filled with ancient beings, the only reasonable one is the human. Definitely not the grumpy vampire… or the other grumpy vampire… and don’t get me started on the eye-searing clothes the bubbly one wears.

And that’s when I run into Ender.

Well… run is probably the wrong word. It’s more like he accidentally saves my life, joins me for a fun torture fest from some guy who woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and then ends up fleeing through unknown territory with my naked body slung over his shoulder.

Is there a better meet-cute than all of that?

Probably not, as long as we ignore the real reason I’m here.

Ender

Keeping Rylee safe is the only thing I should care about. So then how is it that I find myself being pulled along by Mads, a member of the council that I’ve sworn to get rid of? He’s charismatic, charming, and really far too suspicious, but our paths merge as I fight to end an injustice that started hundreds of years ago.

Mads is making me realize that maybe there is more to my life than becoming a martyr for people who seem to think I’m the bad guy. While others see me as a monster, he sees who I really am.

And I will do anything to keep him from the danger he’s been drawn into.

The plot of this book is connected to the events of How to Defy a Vampire. The VRC team is still trying to figure out how the vampire council was killed and who is responsible. Even though the VRC is investigating, the book follows Ender and Mads, who are not part of the VRC. Mads has been sent from the UK to help the American council while it’s being rebuilt, and Ender is still trying to protect Rylee and running from his mysterious past.

Ender was introduced in the previous book, and I was a little surprised to see that this new book was about him, because he didn’t leave that much of an impression on me (honestly, I was more curious about Kaden while reading the 5th book). Still, I was intrigued by Ender and his mysterious past, and we didn’t get as many answers or details in this book as I hoped. I also feel that his arc was slightly rushed. I think there was room for more emotional growth, or at least to show more regrets or desire to change.

Mads is a good addition to the gang, and I like that his strength was in science and his brain, instead of him just being a good fighter or a very old vampire, like most of the other members of the VRC. Sadly, though, I feel that we didn’t truly get a chance to see his layers and to get to know him between all the action and the slightly rushed romance.

The humor is toned down in this book, but the Grumpy/Sunshine dynamic is still there, as is the case with most of Alice Winters’ couple. There are still quirky dialogues and funny moments between Mads and Ender, but it is not as silly and over-the-top as Finn’s antics, and I enjoyed that.

I like Ender and Mads, but I was not the biggest fan of their romance. From the start, it’s been made clear they have very little in common, and while it is explained why Ender eventually feels drawn to Mads and why he comes to appreciate his company, I was not that invested in their romance. It wasn't badly written or developed; it just wasn't the best in this series, in my opinion. I didn't feel the same connection to them as I did to Finn and Marcus, or Alexei and Claude. I think they would have benefited from more quiet and meaningful moments to help develop and deepen their connection.

I feel like another round of editing could have been beneficial when it comes to the flow of the story. It’s good overall, but there are a few repetitive sentences here and there that just made me pause and reread them because they felt weird. It was always little details, such as repeating the name of the character twice or thrice in the same short sentence, but it was enough to make me pause.

While I remain a huge fan of Alice Winters, I feel that her books are becoming a little too similar to each other. I love the grumpy/sunshine dynamic and the silliness, but at the same time, I feel that all of her couples have a similar vibe and banter, and it’s just rinse and repeat from one book to the other. The plot in this book is resolved, but there are still some issues with the council, and there could be more books in this series. I will read them for sure, if the author decides to write more, but I hope that if she introduces new characters, they will have their “own flavor” and feel a little different than the usual grumpy/sunshine dynamic.

I usually enjoy Alice Winters’ books for the humor and chaotic energy, and this book definitely delivers on the funny, as expected. There were several laugh-out-loud moments and quirky banter that reminded me why I keep picking up her work.

That said, this one felt a little uneven. I found some scenes a bit cringe (even for the over-the-top style), and while Ender had some reasons for his actions, I really wish we’d seen more emotional growth or regret from him. His arc felt rushed, and there was a missed opportunity to show him truly rebuilding bridges with others.

The chemistry between Ender and Mads was… okay, but it didn’t fully land for me. I wanted more depth in their connection—more quiet moments or conflict resolution that would really sell them as a couple. Ironically, I usually find books these days a bit too long, but this one could have actually used a few extra chapters to flesh things out.

Not a bad read by any means—definitely fun—but not my favorite from the author either. Hoping the next one leans more into emotional payoff along with the chaos.

I think Mads is a really good addition to this series, he's nutty enough to give Claude a run for his money, he's smarter than the rest of them, and he 'tames' Ender!

The humour was entertaining and well balanced with the rest of the plot, and although the Big Bad was defeated, I'm still anxious about what else could possibly happen next. I still need to see Finn turned, and I need to see the aftermath of what happened in this book!

I loved this series so much, and am sad it's over.

I think this final instalment was my favourite.
so good to have all of our established characters band together.

I'm pretty much obsessed with Alice Winters at this point.
I love how quirky and sassy her characters are.
I always find myself grinning like an idiot while listening to these audiobooks.

I'm not sure if this is the final VRC book but what a way to sign off!

This was another brilliant mix of humour, action, emotion and snarky men and I loved every bit of it, Alice Winters knows how to keep the plot rolling and here was no exception.

I've been fascinated by Ender since he first appeared and here we get to know more about his background and it's a heart-breaking exploration of how twisted one man's ideology can become.

We also get to find out who was behind the events of book five and it's not what I was expecting but I loved the red herrings, the twists and the big reveals.

I also loved Mads big time.

Michael Feraiuolo proves once again why he was made to be the voice of the VRC! He just has a gift of making the madness better, the emotions more powerful and these unique characters more loveable. truly well done cannot recommend enough.

We are back to the VRC, and I could not be happier! After the events of HOW TO DEFY A VAMPIRE, the US vampire council is in shambles and brings in members of other councils to rebuild. This is how we get the pleasure of Mads coming to the US, and he is a joy that I didn't know was missing from my life until now. As with all council . As with all council members, he has secrets that could either make or break the vampire race. We all have met Ender, and yeah, we know he cares for Rylee, but that's about it. Well, his story shows don't judge a man alone by his actions, but what was the cause of the actions.

These two could not be any more opposite, yet they learn to accept and help each other for the better good. Mads brings a much needed levity to Ender, who has been through his fair share of events. while Ender provides the protection and in a round about way the family he needs after losing his. With the help of the VRC team, past pieces all come together for a mind warp of a conclusion. Where all books tie together in one way or another, a brillant job on pulling this off that actually makes sense and doesn't take from previous installments.

previous reading may not be needed but will enhance this story to see how it all unfolds.

I blame the 2 work trips I had this month that kept me from listening to this much quicker, so it's kinda hard to judge if I felt like it was slow and dragging in the middle because it really felt that way for me, or I just had such large breaks in between listening time because of work.

Regardless, I did really enjoy Mads and Ender. Where it dragged was in the middle and they were in the woods together. I think that having the full VRC with them - the antics of Finn and Marcus and then Claude and Alexei - really were the shining moments for me. So for me personally, this series is really drive by those two main couples.

I do think that another book with adding Mads and Ender into the mix will be hilarious and really make me love them. I can see Claude and Mads just teaming up and being absolute chaos together LOL.

Riley was a bit tooooo precious for me at times - that's my usual problem with kids. There were some adorable moments, and then a few that just were too over the top. But Michael voiced her impeccably and the crying and dramatics for being a young king were pretty perfect!

Overall - a 4 star rating for me, because I love the VRC and I enjoyed a lot of this book. I think I just want to get back to Finn and Marcus - and also, gimme another story with Claude LOL.

I'm so glad we got more of the VRC and I had a great time with this book.

While enjoying the plot and seeing more of the characters I love, I didn't care about the romance much. Though I liked both Ender and Mads, I wasn't feeling their chemistry but I thought they would've been great as friends. I even fast forwarded through the sex scenes.

Still, I was entertained and loved seeing Finn, Marcus, Claude, and Alexei again. And I enjoyed Ender who got the most POVs in this one.

As always, fantastic narration from Michael Ferraiuolo.

This book had the same problem the 7th book of the Hitman Series did. The action was great, the gang was sorta funny, but the romance was a miss.

I want my romantic partners to have a chance to bond before introducing kids, pets, and the rest of the gang to the dynamic. There was 0 chemistry between Ender and Mads. I wish their escape from Abel took longer and gave them more of a chance to bond. The out of nowhere sex was rushed and unnecessary. Mads topping first was a… choice.

Speaking of the devil, I wish Mads was more of a funny crazy brilliant scientist with more sciency tricks up his sleeve. Maybe be a little bit 💥 happy? More let’s fix everything with “soup” type of guy. It would’ve been a good “your crazy matches my crazy” in regards to Ender who thinks he can solve everything by decapitating vampires.

Ender was not likable. He did a lot of damage to the gang that we sorta brushed under the table because “everyone makes mistakes”. He never stopped being an asshole to everyone around him, kid included.

I know Alice likes to introduce a pet element on almost every book, but the cat in this one was meh and more filler than entertainment. It was the same with Riley. She was filler instead of actually adding anything of value to the plot. You could’ve skipped every Riley and every cat scene and not miss a single bit of the plot. It would’ve actually strengthen the tension that Abel brought to the table.

This book was 70% banter filler and 30% plot. I binged this in a few hours so at least it’s a quick read.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

How to Entice a Fiend is the sixth book in Alice Winters’ Vampire Related Crimes series, and while it features a new couple in Mads and Ender, it builds on a series arc that starts in other books, particularly How to Defy a Vampire. So while you could probably follow along with romance and some of the storyline, I think totally new readers may have trouble following the series plot and the cast of side characters. Even as someone who has read all the books, it did take me a little while here to get myself oriented again, as the last story came out 2.5 years ago and there was a lot I didn’t remember. This is a “villain redeemed” story (one of my favorite tropes), as Ender is definitely the bad guy of the prior book, and I think Winters does a nice job humanizing him here to help us understand his character and why he did the things he did in the past.

This story puts a nice resolution on the Abel storyline (or at least what appears to be a resolution), but things are still pretty chaotic with the council and the vampire situation, so there is room to continue to build if the series grows further. If you are a fan of this series, I think you are going to enjoy this latest installment.

This had me laughing out loud and then biting my nails as the villains did bad villain things. Enders has endured an horrendous life that causes him untold nightmares. Fortunately he has the delightful young Rylee to help keep him together. It’s a life that means no one truly understands him until Mads enters his orbit and refuses to leave. The very charming Mads is not what he seems and I loved watching the layers get peeled back and his true capabilities revealed just at the time they were needed. Although his flirting game is definitely in need of some fine tuning! Ender, Mads and the VRC family from previous books all come together to fight a truly evil being who has played a very very long game to get what he wants.
I loved that we finally learn why Ender is like he is and get to watch he slowly begin to grow into a much better person with Mads and Rylee beside him. There’s also a deeply emotional moment for Claude and his hair, Finn being his usual self, Mads and his special “soup” and of course a very satisfying hard earned HEA for Ender and Mads.

I'm happy to be back with the gang at the VRC. Finally, we get Enders' story where he meets the mysterious Mads from the UK vampire council. A lot happens in this book. You find out exactly why he acts the way that he does.

This book made me laugh a lot, and I loved reading it. I can't wait to read what happens next at the VRC.

Thank you to the author for the ARC.

Danger is too close!

Enjoy the efforts Ender will go to protect the 7 year old girl Rylee, a true vampire, along with those Mads, a male vampire from the UK, will make to seduce Ender. There will be fights, plot twists, and wary but supportive friends in this action adventure—love story!!!

Seriously, what's not to love about this book?!

It's full of classic Alice Winters banter, characters that would be fun to hang out with (though maybe with a few less bad guys lol), love that is shown in questionable ways and a bit of steamy fun! This series is fantastic and well worth the read!

This audio had me in tears laughing. Mads and Ender are such a strange pairing, but they somehow work. My heart broke for all the things Ender had to endure in his past. I'm glad he has Mads now to care for him. I enjoyed getting bits of Finn and the rest of the VRC as well. Great listen!

I adored Ender, he made me laugh with his dry, sarcastic humour. Little Rylee bought out the more softer yet protective side of him which was sweet. Their little kitty added a little something extra to their family. Don’t even get me started on what Rylee named the poor kitty, I was cracking up.

Mads and Ender made me laugh with their bantering. These two were complete opposites: sunshine and grumpy.

Fantastic book! Highly recommend!

Wow! Soooo much happened in this book that it’s kind of hard to review. While neither MC is part of the VRC, Mads is part of the vampire council. A good portion of the beginning of the book is Mads and Ender trying to escape the bad guy and his disciples. There were many times Mads and Ender nearly died. When they finally evade their ‘hunters’, they join forces with the VRC. This book left me nail biting until the very end wondering if it was going to end in a cliffhanger!

*****
POV… multi first person (Mads, Ender, AND Finn!)

Hangover… slight

Recommend… yes

Reread… sure

I was delighted when I heard that Ender was getting a book. There had to be a reason why he was like that, right? Of course there was, and we get to find out the hows and whys!

Do not jump in at this book, or even the one before it. No, this needs to be read after the entire series. I'm glad I did a refresh listen because a fair amount of past things came back up. Seeing all those pieces slot into place was cool!

It's safe to say I love Ender now. The man has been through a lot. All he wants is to finish cleaning house and raise Rylee (who is hilarious FYI) and by the end, be with Mads.

Oh Mads! He is such an interesting addition to the group. He's like Finn in that he's determined but also full of shades of grey. Literally all I can say about him without giving away some of the plot.

There are still a few things which need answered, so it's likely there's at least 1 more book to go. I almost don't want the series to end because I love it so much. I just want this found family to be happy, though, and now that means they've got Ender, Mads, and Rylee in their ranks too.

Ender's grumpiness meets Mads' extra sunshine attitude and they make fireworks. A naked half naked meet cute rescue that's the beginning of real bad things happening!
I loved this story! After the last book I knew I wanted to know more about Ender; he was the supposedly bad guy but it was obvious pretty soon there was more to his story and that there was something bigger at work.
Meeting Mads, a super young vampire who seems awfully suspicious and is very flirty, might just be exactly what Ender needed.
There's so much action I was constantly afraid of everyone's wellbeing. I had no way of knowing Alice was not going to surprise us with a twist nobody was expecting! I was genuinely afraid! Action filled, banter filled, flirting filled, plus we get to see all of the VRC and Orin a lot, all joining forces to defeat the bad guy and maybe finally find peace and do their regular jobs without needing to save the world.

Got to love a redemption story. So after all the drama and gasp moments of book 5, I have to say I was a little unsure I’d want to read Ender’s book. I mean, he was pretty brutal to our lovely Finn and Claude. But when the blurb came out for this, I knew I had to give it a go and I’m so glad I did.
Ender is a troubled grump with way more to him than just killer rampage. I really liked his begrudging growth in this book. Mads is such a fun quirky guys. He is perfect for Ender. I won’t say any more because spoilers.
As always enjoyed the POV of both main characters and Finn snippets too. This world is such an interesting and hilarious one. Can’t wait for book 7!

It’s been a little over two years since the last VRC book, How to Defy a Vampire, was released so it took me a little while to get back into the swing of things, particularly when it came to Ender. But luckily there were enough little reminders in How to Entice a Fiend to spark my memory. But what I didn’t forget was how much I enjoyed these characters!

How to Entice a Fiend introduces us to Mads, the delightful mad scientist, and reintroduces Ender- the villain of sorts from HtDaV. The story is a continuation of How to Defy a Vampire, but rather than seeing things through Finn and Marcus’s points of view, we get a different perspective from Mads and Ender. I like learning the “why” of characters, and it was really interesting, and sad, seeing how Ender came to be who he is now. A lot of the story focuses on the fact that Ender’s past has come back to haunt him, and how Mads fits into that scenario.

As I mentioned, Mads is just a delight! He’s sweet and funny, and one of those characters you can’t help but like. Ender is a bit of a lost soul who lashes out at anyone and everyone. I liked how his character evolved over the course of this book. He’ll always have that darkness inside him, but it was nice to see some light coming back.

It was so great seeing the rest of the VRC crew, of course, and Rylee- she’s darling!
As with the previous books in this series, there were some very tense moments, and some that were just on this side of being almost too hard to read. I hate seeing characters I like in trouble! But never fear, you’ll be laughing the next minute- there’s such a great balance of suspense and humor.

I’m not sure what, if anything, the VRC crew will be getting into next, but I’ll be ready and waiting!

It's been a while since we've seen our friends from the VRC - Vampire Related Crimes - and they're as chaotic as ever, especially in the aftermath of the complete implosion of the US vampire council. But where there is chaos, the VRC must trust an unlikely ally to see it through.

Ender has caused a lot of trouble for the VRC. But he had good reasons. Reasons he's not very willing to share until he knows who he can trust. And Mads, who harbours his own set of devastating secrets, seems the least likely candidate. But needs must, and there are very few things that can bring two people together other than a joint kidnapping, torture, and escape.

As has been the theme of this series so far, opposites very much attract. Ender is an extremely grumpy vampire with some rather homicidal tendencies, while Mads is a cheerful, sunshine-y brand of chaos that can rival even Finn. They really shouldn't work together as well as they do, but they really do.

They balance each other out in complimentary ways, and definitely find some solid common grounds on which they can move forward. And somewhere along the way, not only do they make their common goals work for each other, they also gain the trust of the VRC, and somewhere along the way, fall in love with each other. And with everything else that's going on, those are some pretty impressive milestones to hit.

As I've grown to appreciate about this series, complete chaos was met with the continued growth of a found family. Ender and Mads find allies - and friends - with the colourful group that makes up the VRC. I don't know what the future holds for these characters, but I have a feeling it won't be long before we all find out.
