Spirit Trials

Rate this book
She entered the trials as an outsider. She’ll rise as a legend.

Farrah has spent her life in a quiet village where survival means strength. Her people are strong, self-sufficient, and taught to defend themselves—skills she’s mastered well. She’s never heard of spirit animals or the deadly trials that mark the passage to adulthood in the Wolf, Jaguar, and Dragon kingdoms.

On the eve of tragedy, a cold-eyed outsider shows up with armed men, and she’s forced to leave everything behind. Her family’s safety depends on her obedience—even if it means stepping into a world where she doesn’t belong. In the Wolf Kingdom, Farrah is thrown into the Spirit Trials, a brutal competition meant to bring forth a spirit animal. Most train their whole lives for this; Farrah didn’t even know spirit animals existed.

Rysden, the man who took her from her village, keeps his distance but insists she can survive the trials, even without a spirit animal. Farrah doesn’t know why he cares, or what he’s hiding. Allies will join her, and her will to survive will be tested like never before. She’ll discover a strength she never knew she had—and a destiny she never saw coming.

AJ's books have been on my TBR forever and I'm so glad I finally was able to read this one!

It was non stop action, sizzling tension and mysteries galore.

It has all the vibes from the hunger games if it was mixed with a paranormal romance and I loved it!

Rysden was fierce and definitely morally gray, but at the same time I lived for all his sweet and soft spoken moments. He was obsessed with Farrah and definitely had all the Touch Her and Die vibes.

Farrah was strong in her own way, merciful and I loved how she was the perfect opposite to Rysden and could push his buttons.

The side characters made me chuckle, the magic and world AJ built kept me invested, and this is a series I will definitely be continuing as the other two books are released!

Physical Intimacy Level 3 (Detailed Making Out with a quick Fade to Black and some Innuendo)
Zero Swearing
Single POV: Farrah
Moderate Violence: people killed, attacked, mentions of blood, wounds murdered etc. Nothing too gory or graphic (would say PG13)

This book captured my attention as soon as I saw the cover. The intro to Farrah was good, and the opening scenes were intriguing as well. It wasn't until about 47% in that I started to lose interest.

As soon as Harper & the other girl were introduced, the story got way too chaotic. I didn't like Harper the entire book, and Kinsley just seemed to be a pointless character (other than just introducing her for the next book). I wish there were more details during the trials that weren't just Farrah taking care of them.

Farrah maintained this strong, warrior-like demeanor all up until the trials. I understand her mercy became what she was known for, but she was way too passive for someone who believed her family's lives were dependent on her winning.

The trials weren't what I was expecting, either. I expected more challenges other than them being attacked by creatures and saved through interventions. It wasn't predictable, but it didn't seem like she really did anything spectacular to earn winning.

As for the romance between Farrah and Rysden.... eh. The bickering dragged on for practically the entire book. The start to them actually getting along was delayed due to them acting as if they didn't know how to communicate their emotions.

In the end, I was disappointed with Farrah, didn't care for Rysden, loved Lox, hated Solace, and wished Farrah actually competed properly in the trials.

This book gives serious first draft energy. It lacks depth and description. Things just seem to happen out of nowhere and then just disappear. And there are so many errors!
Are they gold coins or gold rings?
Is the wolf's name Shadow or Shade?
Did that character die or not?
This thing needs some serious rewrites and edits.
Could be really good but definitely not ready yet.

I wanted to give a really good review but I couldn’t rate higher than 3 stars. I love the author and have read many of her books. So was excited to delve into this new series! It’s well written with a plot and MFC that pulls you right into the story almost straight away (at least it did for me).

The overarching plot is good, the supporting characters are fun, and I liked the general grit of the MFC. However there were some things that bothered me, and they may not be an issue for you at all. But they here they are:

- spontaneous beheadings and relatively gory descriptions

- MMC who seems to have no real drive/sense of responsibility (doesn’t want to rule, doesn’t care that much about changing the status quo even though it’s barbaric, doesn’t have any particular loyalty to his guards, friends or people)

- Also MMC is literally, ultimately responsible for 90% of all the FMC’s troubles

- MMC and a few other characters tend to have a violent/ almost sadistic streak (I don’t mind a man who hurts/kills when he has to, to protect himself and others… but someone who hurts/maims/tortures and then kills someone who is defenceless after the fight is over (his own guards, and others who had hurt her)… not really an attractive thing)

-which brings me to my last point. The MFC does not like violence and tries extremely hard not to hurt others, even when it causes her a lot of trouble. And she gets the moniker ‘Lady Mercy’. But the MMC just turns around and does his best to hurt all the people she goes out of her way not to hurt… 😭 like what!!!
Example (one of many): She knocks him out so that he doesn’t try to kill guards arresting her, then he turns around and brutally tortures them before killing them… (his own guards who are just following orders… I honestly can’t get past that)
Is her mercy a weakness that he thinks he’s compensating for? If so how do they move forward when they have such polar opposite values. Because she like literally begs him not to hurt different people and he does anyway and then they’re like mwah mwah, I love you. Make it make sense!?

Basically I realised I just really don’t like the MMC. I thought he was weak. Physically strong but used his strength against others without displaying self-control and discipline. You think he’ll get better and you’ll see the ‘softer’ side of him as you go along, but honestly the more I got to know him the more I disliked him. He comes across as possessive without actually showing much kindness and love. Putting his own interests and desires before that of everyone else (even the FMC most of the time)
And hiding behind his sob story as an excuse for how terrible a Prince he is, how bland a personality he has, how heartless to his own people and those who get banished… which he does eventually try to help but it literally feels like he’s only doing it to please FMC… which doesn’t make him a good person, it makes him someone who wants the girl he likes to like him back.

Anyway I’ve said enough, you may enjoy it, but it wasn’t for me.
I’ll read the next book, the Main Characters in that one seem refreshingly kinder and sweeter than this book.

It’s finally here! Spirit Trials by AJ Manney is out NOW! For fans of a good, angsty, slow-burn enemies to lovers with a good sprinkling of fantasy and a little PNR, this is for you!

Farrah is a resilient fire-cracker of a woman, forced to grow up before her town to take care of her younger brother and mother in her tiny village, she has learned how to hunt, power through injury, and stand up for herself.

Then Rysden and his band of warriors appear in her village, along with the destruction of many of the homes, as well as most of the provisions, and takes her away by force.

Farrah doesn’t care for Rysden one bit, though she is drawn to him in ways she doesn’t understand. Slowly, though, despite trying to maintain her distance she finds herself befriending her captors.

But nothing is as it seems. Once she is brought to Rysden’s home, she becomes aware of a world she never knew existed, and soon finds herself involved in the Spirit Trials, a test designed to bring people to their limits, possibly kill them, in an attempt to draw their potential spirit animals out. Failure to with the Spirit Trials spells disaster for Farrah, who is certain not to have a spirit animal. To survive, she will have to draw on every bit of her survival skills and experience, while slowly growing to know and care for Rysden in ways she never anticipated.

I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will just say watching Farrah grow to find her own HEA, as well as one with Rysden, is well worth diving into the journey. Grab your copy today!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book swept me away from the very first page. Rysden and Farrah are unforgettable main characters—Rysden is the protective, quietly intense hero you can’t help but fall for, while Farrah shines as a strong, independent heroine who refuses to bow to the corrupt. Their romance was absolutely swoon-worthy, the kind that makes you smile, kicking your feet at 2am. It makes you root for them with every stolen glance and every hard-won moment.

The action was perfect—fast-paced enough to keep me on the edge of my seat, but not rushed. Every battle, every trial felt purposeful, driving the story forward. On top of that, the found family element gave the book so much warmth and heart; I loved seeing bonds of loyalty and love grow. Having a book with genuinely interesting and distinct side characters is a big plus for this book, leaving you invested in future books in this series. I literally can't wait for the next book!

This is the kind of fantasy that lingers with you long after you turn the last page: immersive, emotional, and deeply satisfying. If you love a clean/low spice swoony romance, a fierce heroine, a protective hero, and a story that blends action with heart, Spirit Trials is an absolute must-read.

Note: *I did receive an ARC from the author, but I was not obligated to review*

Spirit Trials is A. J. Manney's first in the new Spirit Kingdoms Series. I found it to be an unique paranormal romance set in the hidden from mortals Wolf Kingdom. At the beginning, I kept reading to see whether Rysden, the strong, stubborn main male character, was truly a heartless villain who enjoyed mentally breaking down the equally stubborn Farrah, the indepentent, fierce female main character.
I immediately loved the spirited, intelligent who would challenge those around her in so many ways but knew when to back down and observe. A.J. Manney takes the time to build the story and it takes a bit to discover the reasons for Rysden's actions. The story has a natural flow, with well written, authentic characters and an intriguing fantasy world. There are heartbreaking situations leading to life and death decisions, a slow burn attraction and friendships, old and new but the core of the story is the power of pure hearted kindness over greedy violence. I also like that it was a closed door romance that portrayed the love story through the actions of the characters despite often being misunderstood.
All in all, I loved the story and am looking forward to reading the upcoming books in The Spirit Kingdoms series!
I received an advance readers copy and am leaving a voluntary review based solely on my personal reading experience.

Whirlwind!

This one was a whirlwind and totally worth it! It’s similar to the Hunger Games (in that it has trials) but it’s got mates and a heroine with a heart of gold. I was absolutely locked into the plot. I was rooting for Farrah the entire time. The romance was great too. I cheered when our main characters finally expressed their feelings.

Farrah has been taking care of her mother and younger brother for years. She’s had to be the tough one. Even though she’s strong, she’s also a total cinnamon roll. She wants everybody to live, so when she’s forced into a competition where she’s got to survive (while everybody is fighting/killing each other), she definitely is not looking forward to it. But her heart is shown so much during the trials, and it just made me love her more.

Rysden is a morally grey prince who is just (and just as deadly). He truly is a sweet guy. It’s just unfortunate that he was raised by a maniac. He’s the silent (protective) and deadly type. One of my favorites!

I LOVED the side characters. They had me laughing (and crying!). Lox, Kinsley, and Parker are my favorite! I am beyond excited for the next book in the series! I already know that it’s going to be SO GOOD!

Content: Kissing and innuendo. Fade to black scene. No language. Violence and some gore (as would be expected from a deadly fighting book).

This book was absolutely incredible!!! I LOVE AJ Manney and this book is, in my opinion, her best book yet! The danger, intrigue, relationships, tensions, and plot were all so perfect and I loved how each character grew and developed. I loved Farrah and I absolutely loved Rysden! I also really loved her relationships with Rsyden's team and the camaraderie was amazing. The trials were just so intense and I loved how Farrah won in the end because of all the people that she helped. AJ Manney is an expert at writing fated mates novels and I absolutely loved the whole concept of spirit animals and corporeal ones. This book was so gripping and I honestly could not put it down. I cannot wait for the next book!!!

It is my first time reading a book by author A. J. Manney and I cannot wait to read the whole installment. Farrah and Rysden’s story is as messy as they come. Filled with banter, sass, swoon, and jaw dropping scenes. To be quite honest, at first, I was very confused and did not understand at all why Farrah had to participate in the trials, but as the story unfolded and other characters came to play I was able to reach that “oh, that’s why!” moment!! The story is filled with high-stakes action, unexpected plot twists, and unforgettable characters. It’s a must read!

Read it!

Through a series of events involving a prophecy and a king gone mad, Ferrah is forced to compete in the spirit trials. All while dealing with the confusion of a man who is her kidnapper yet also her protector. How can a man who ripped you away from everything you love also make you feel safe?

This is a fun new series. I love the idea of spirit animals and am really looking forward to the next book. The tension between Ferrah and Rysden is so good. It's clean but still toe curling. Read it!

I just couldn’t put this down. I’d had a small string of books that just made me feel like it was a chore to continue reading even though I liked the premise. But this one, I read in two days! Sure it has some problems but I can overlook them, the book is that good! This is the third series that I’ve read from A.J and it’s hands down the best one so far!

A new paranormal romance series by A.J. Manney. The Spirit Trials take place in the Wolf Kingdom, where Farrah is taken from her village and forced to compete in the deadly Spirit Trials that are meant to bring out one's spirit animal. I liked getting to read a book from Manney that had more fantasy elements to it. I also loved the romance in this book! This is the first in a series of standalones, but I highly suggest reading them in order as a series.
Content: closed-door

I was not sure what to think about this book from the title. However, I havr loved all of Amanda's other books so I jumped into yhis one feet first. This world building is a little different from her other worlds. That made it fascinating for me. I enjoyed the dialogue between thr characters. learning about the spirit animals and rooting for our MC and her two friends to get theirs while they competed in the challenges was exhilarating. I loved how this story wrapped up and cannot wait to read yhe next one. As all of her other books this one is clean and delightful.

Sizzling Chemistry, High Stakes

This series is off to an incredible start—wow! I couldn’t put this one down (no surprise there, AJ Manney always delivers!). I loved everything about this story. Farrah, the heroine, is fierce, brave, loyal, and kind. Rysden, the kidnapper, is strong, protective, broody, and dark. The two of them together? Absolute fire. Their story is packed with life-or-death stakes, sizzling chemistry, and just the right amount of flirtation.

I’ve always loved stories involving wolves and mates, and this book did not disappoint. While it may not be for everyone, if you enjoy a good story and aren’t too picky, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. What stood out to me most was the unique concept of spirit animals rather than the usual shifter theme—it felt fresh and original. Thank you to the author for creating another captivating read!

Exceptional story!

There is nothing I didn't like about this story.
It's got all the things I enjoy in a romantasy.
I am going to dive into the next book in the series right now, but wanted to recommend this to other fantasy lovers.
The characters, the world building, the suspense, and the friendships are all so well crafted; the dialogue is realistic and the slow burn romance is sweet.
Highly recommended!

Was expecting a good book but boy was I surprised.

A. J. Manney is a great author so I was expecting a good book but I was really surprised with how amazing this book is. I went into this book without even reading the book summary just because of the author. Her books are clean but have depth that a lot of authors of clean books don't have. I loved the story line, the character & all the crooks, turns & surprises. Keep up the great writing.

2.5

Writing: 2 stars
Story: 3 stars

This was just a good read to turn my brain off for a while. Although I did get so frustrated she kept letting people go after they tried to kill her. It was so stupid. Like sure don’t kill them but at least get them out of the competition. I was practically screaming at my kindle after the millionth time she just shrugs her shoulders and nearly being murdered. Ugh.

So, so good!

I loved this story! Just like a good tv series - it grabs you, drops you into the action, keeps you interested and entertained with some action and romance, and gives a good resolution while leading into the next story. I devoured it in a day. I can’t wait to read the next one.

keep me glued

What an interesting story. I found myself laughing because Farrah had the same frustration that I felt when people (yes, mostly men) would say something expecting me to understand when 9/10 tenth of the information was missing. Good characters and plot. Will be reading the next book in series.

I LOVED this book!

AJ Manney for the win again. This book has everything you want: adventure, suspense, a horrible, terrible bad king that needs to be removed from power, a marvelously crafted love story that your dying to see beat all the odds, a fierce heroin and her equally foul tempered capture surrounded by mystery, who might have a hidden heart of golf.

4.25⭐️ good plot, lovable characters. I was hoping there would be a good bit more spice to this. The trials were action packed, and there were a few plot twists. Some aspects were predictable but satisfying. Likely won’t continue with the series only because it’s more geared towards YA and I enjoy much more darker and spicier books 😆

I don't really understand why this book has the rating it does. The writing was weird, almost like a ten-year-old wrote the book. The characters lacked depth, and the plot was pretty weak and unexciting. This is not a series that I will continue with.

I love AJ Manney's books and this was another great one. I just couldn't put it down once I got started. I wasn't sure if I was going to ever like Rysden, but by the end I love him too. Counting the days until the next book in the series!

Trauma, Drama and lots of Gore

Excellent end to the series. A real page turner! Every page a new trial to overcome. Filled with pain and blood until it seems normal. Death to all. Saved by the spirit animals. Don’t read it before bed and expect to sleep.
