“Rarely does a debut author deliver such profound emotional depth, vivid historical storytelling, and character journeys that feel as lived-in and true as J. James Wheeling’s beautifully intertwined novels—Gantlet and Kismetleft me breathless.” —Candace Sinclair, Editor and Book Strategist
Kismet is a story about a young woman's journey toward self-discovery at a time when women didn't have many opportunities beyond marriage and childbearing. What if a woman wanted more? Risk-taking men found freedom and opportunity by rushing to the California goldfields. Why not women? Only those women with courage, foresight and someone to believe in them stood a chance at seeing California's golden light.
Dearest Dot... Learned illicit family business... Must flee Boston... For your family's safety say nothing to my father... Meet me in San Francisco...Please...Love Dash.
Why didn't Donovan O'Creigh just ask her to go with him? Unsure if she's more exasperated by being left at the alter or abandoned to certain spinsterhood in Boston's rigid society, Lillia Soilleux has to decide if she buckles under or breaks free. Regardless, nothing steels her determination more than being underestimated. When her adventurer uncle arrives for the wedding, he unknowingly provides her with the opportunity she needs to test her conviction to Donovan. They sail around Cape Horn on a ship filled with a cargo that allows only one stop along the way. Thrown together with strangers for five straight months is a confined space makes for boredom and tension between passengers. It is here that Lillia discovers her true essence and is confronted by surprising, and dangerous, choices.
Kismet is a richly textured historical novel that captures the quiet courage it takes for a woman to claim her own destiny in a world determined to limit her choices. Set against the rigid expectations of 19th century society and the boundless promise of the California frontier, J. James Wheeling delivers a deeply emotional story of resilience, identity, and self-determination.
Lillia Soilleux begins the novel on the brink of a prescribed future marriage, conformity, and silence only to have that path abruptly stripped away. What follows is not simply a tale of abandonment, but a powerful awakening. Forced to choose between surrendering to societal judgment or daring to pursue her own future, Lillia steps into uncertainty with remarkable resolve.
Wheeling excels at immersing readers in both setting and character. The perilous sea voyage around Cape Horn becomes a crucible where fear, longing, tension, and transformation collide. Confined spaces, simmering secrets, and unexpected alliances push Lillia to confront who she is and who she refuses to remain.
What makes Kismet especially compelling is its emotional authenticity. Lillia’s growth feels earned, her doubts relatable, and her strength quietly defiant. This is historical fiction that honors women whose bravery often went unrecorded, illuminating the cost and reward of choosing oneself.
Kismet will resonate strongly with readers who enjoy character driven historical fiction, stories of female empowerment, and narratives where personal transformation unfolds against sweeping historical backdrops.
Kismet is a deeply affecting historical novel that brings emotional authenticity, strong character development, and vivid period detail together with remarkable confidence. J. James Wheeling captures the constraints placed on women in the mid 19th century while simultaneously illuminating the quiet bravery required to defy them. The story unfolds with purpose, allowing the reader to fully inhabit Lillia Soilleux’s internal and external journey.
What distinguishes Kismet is its commitment to emotional truth. Lillia’s transformation from a woman constrained by social expectation to one willing to risk everything for autonomy feels earned and lived in. The voyage around Cape Horn becomes more than a physical passage; it is a crucible for identity, resilience, and moral reckoning. Wheeling’s prose is steady and evocative, making Kismet a compelling and resonant exploration of choice, courage, and self-determination.
I read Kismet after the Gantlet and devoured both of them. I was intrigued how the author weaved the characters stories together throughout both of these books. I never thought of myself as a historical fiction fan, but J. James Wheeling takes you for a ride with the characters stories and the exciting and surprising twists and turns their journey takes. This was a fun and captivating read and I highly recommend this book to others - especially those that enjoy reading about western expansion, but also to those (like me) who never gave historical fiction much thought before.
A captivating historical fiction story set in the 1800's during the gold rush. I loved the main character, Lillia. She was a smart, beautiful and an intriguing woman. The author, J James Wheeling, must have spent years researching this period of history. it was extremely informative to read and to learn about how difficult these journeys would have been like to get to California. All the characters were fascinating and woven together beautifully to make for a powerful story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Gantlet.
This book was an absolute page-turner! The plot is full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing from start to finish. Just when I thought I had it figured out, something surprising happened that pulled me right back in. It’s engaging, exciting, and hard to put down. I very highly recommend giving it a read—you won’t be disappointed!
This book was rich with a beautiful tapestry of history, story-telling, memorable characters, and excitement! I was drawn to Lillia, who was a woman of strength, courage, adventure and intelligence in an age of obvious patriarchy. Highly recommend!
