This is by far the best translation of the original Mahabharata by Sage Vyasa. After an extensive background research and reading, Mr. Ramesh has undertaken this monumental work of translating each of the nearly 100,000 Sanskrit Slokas (verses) into Kannada. It is literally a verse for verse translation of the original into Kannada. It is pure, unpolluted, clear as the pristine waters of Manasa Sarowara. A no-nonsense translation. There are no explanations, no elaborations beyond the original majestic Sanskrit is already gifting us—and, what a gift to the Kannada readers! Paraphrasing Mr. Ramesh: “Sanskrit is such a profound and rich language with several layers of meanings, it would be wrong for a translator to provide one’s own interpretation or explanation—the reader must develop the mature skills of savoring the incredible richness of the original Vyasa’s Sanskrit”. Another noteworthy aspect of this work is that the entire translation is freely available as PDF documents, Parva by Parva. The author’s webpage says tha this is a “work in progress”. In fact, one can see the end, for the author wrote to me that “only Shanti Parva—The Book of Peace— and Harivamsha—The lineage of Hari—are currently under translation. My sincere thanks and profound appreciation for Mr. Ramesh’s skills and efforts—I intend to print the entire volume so that I can enjoy reading this classic the old fashion way, holding it in my hands.
